B”H 5712 LORRAINE ROAD, LAKEWOOD RANCH · 941-752-3030 · WWW.CHABADOFBRADENTON.COM CHABAD NEWS JANUARY 2016 /TEVET-SHEVAT 5776 VOL. 13/ ISSUE 4 MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI IN THIS ISSUE: FIVE FABULOUS CHANUKAH EVENTS WITH CHABAD 2 ONGOING PROGRAMS 6 IN APPRECIATION 7 CALENDAR OF EVENTS 8 3 Chabad of Bradenton & Lakewood Ranch is an organization that provides social, educational, recreational, and religious programming. Chabad is a place where every Jew, affiliated or unaffiliated, observant or non-observant, can come and feel comfortable. We believe that regardless of educational background or affiliation, it is the inalienable right of every Jewish person to learn and participate in our heritage, which belongs to us equally. Many times in the midst of learning a complex Talmudic concept of Talmud or discussing an esoteric conundrum of G-dliness, I hear: “Rabbi, who cares about all this? Why do we need to learn this? It’s abstract, and completely impractical to my daily life. This has no impact on my daily existence. It’s a great question. One would think that we should only invest in the more practical aspects of Torah that apply to our daily life. However, when we look at the many holy books gracing the shelves of Jewish homes, bookstores, and libraries, we notice many seemingly abstract and esoteric holy books such as the Talmud and Zohar. What's the purpose of these theoretical books? One of the greatest sages, Reb Moshe Ben Maimon known as the Rambam or Maimonides, was famous for writing fourteen books on Jewish laws pertaining to all the mitzvahs, even the ones that do not apply today. In 1985, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, OBM, launched a campaign to learn a daily portion of these fourteen books of Jewish law in order to conclude Maimonides books annually or triennially. The Rebbe mentioned that through learning these books we are able to traverse through the entire Torah. The first Chabad Rebbe writes in his seminal work of Tanya that when one learns Torah, he is connecting himself with the essence of G-d. Whether the subject matter is understood or practical is irrelevant. At the moment that one is learning, one is connected. This connection is on a spiritual level which ultimately effects a physical connection as well, binding us with G-d. The more we learn, the more connected we are with G-d causing us to identify with His will and desire as if it is our own. That was one of the reasons why the Rebbe campaigned for the daily learning of the Rambam. This learning enables us, no matter what is going on in our hectic day, to take a moment and connect with our source. This year, the yahrzeit (anniversary of passing) of Maimonides, on the 20th of Tevet, coincides with January 1, 2016. It is appropriate on the day of the Rambam’s Yahrzeit to strengthen ourselves in Torah study. Nowadays, we can find Torah with the click of a button, or a swipe of our fingers. There are apps, websites, and recordings on any topic in Torah at the tips of our fingers. There are live classes available as well. Here in Bradenton & Lakewood Ranch, there are at least five different opportunities to learn Torah weekly. Let us all take advantage of these opportunities and connect to our source, the creator of the world. May this extra learning lead us to the ultimate redemption when, “The earth will be filled with the knowledge of G-d as the water covers the seas.” I hope to see you soon at a Torah class!
