2012 - Richstone Family Center
For the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse
Winter 2012
Since 1974, the Richstone Family Center has worked to
treat and prevent child abuse, strengthen families, and
prevent violence in families, schools and communities.
We’ve provided thousands of children and families
the coping tools, emotional support, education, and
advocacy they need to heal and rebuild their lives.
Despite our success, the need is still great.
With your help, we can do so much more...
UÊexpand our programs to better address the
overlap between child abuse, domestic violence
and alcohol/substance abuse
UÊincrease school based counseling services that
enable us to serve more children in need
UÊbuild upon collaborative partnerships to prevent
community violence
UÊincrease educational and career development
opportunities for our clients
UÊprovide educational resources for the public that
build awareness and prevent abuse
UÊexpand our clinical training program, which
prepares future professionals and increases the
number of families we can support
Child Abuse in America
UÊChild abuse is reported every 10 seconds
UÊ5 children die every day as a result of child abuse
UÊAn estimated 30% of abused children will later
abuse their own children
UÊChildren who experience child abuse are 59%
more likely to be arrested as a juvenile and 30%
more likely to commit violent crime
Together, we can make
a difference.
Providing a Safe Place for Children and Families
Each year, Richstone gives hundreds of children and families an opportunity to celebrate holidays in a safe and
healthy environment. We believe it is so important to provide a space in which families have a sense of belonging
and feel like they truly matter.
We remain truly grateful to all the volunteers and service groups, including National Charity League, Junior Vistas,
local Interact Clubs, North High J’s & V’s and the Girl Scouts, who continue to make these events possible!
Easter Party
Halloween Party
Special thanks to the South Bay Kappa Kappa Gamma
Alumnae for the beautiful baskets and to Yogurtland
for making the day extra special!
Thank you Weight Watchers (Torrance) and St. John
Fisher School for the giveaway goodies. And, many
thanks to Patman Meat Group for sponsoring the
event - you brought smiles to so many families!
Helping Children Learn and Grow
In 2011, the Fulfillment Fund transformed the Kids Club’s
raised sandbox into a garden. The kids greatly enjoyed
growing, harvesting, and especially, eating the tomatoes they
were able to grow. A year later, I began my Girl Scout Gold
Award Project with the goal of expanding the amount of edible
plants in the garden and helping the kids take charge of the
space. I started weekly lessons and activities in and out of the
garden. We began a majority of our plants as seeds in recycled
yogurt cups, but before any planting could be done, a name
was created for our garden club, now known as “The Olive
Garden.” The kids of “The Olive Garden” water the garden
everyday and mark it on their watering chart. Due to all the
care the kids have given, we have seen a large amount of
growth and have enjoyed tasting some beans, squash, mint,
and peppers that they’ve grown.

Richstone Unveils a New Care-A-Van
Mobile Counseling Program to Support
its Child Abuse Treatment and
Prevention Programs
In response to changing demographics and emerging community needs,
Richstone created the mobile Care-A-Van program. The Richstone CareA-Van is a converted motor home designed to accommodate counseling,
supportive, and educational services. The Care-A-Van provides evidence
based, best practice programs including Parent Child Interaction Therapy
(PCIT) and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) at
school and community sites in high-risk areas within the Greater South Bay
and Southwest areas of Los Angeles. Supportive services such as parenting
classes, family support groups and community education programs are
also offered. The program targets children and families impacted by
behavioral issues or traumatized by abuse and violence, and strives to
ensure that services are accessible to those who need them most.
In collaboration with the Lawndale, Lennox, and Los Angeles Unified School
Districts and Abode Communities, the Care-A-Van provides programs at
four elementary school sites and a low-income housing development in
Wilmington. By reducing barriers such as transportation, cost and stigma,
a greater number of children and families will receive the services they need
to enable them to learn, grow and function effectively in their daily lives.
The new mobile Care-A-Van counseling unit was funded through the
generous support of The Morrison & Foerster Foundation, The Rose Hills
Foundation, and Newman’s Own Foundation. This new, customized
mobile unit will enable Richstone to continue providing high-quality
services to families in underserved communities for many years to come.

Alumni Spotlight
My introduction to
Richstone was in
the fourth grade.
My mom, a single
parent, worked all
day to support our
family and needed
to find a place for
me to stay after
school. Richstone
became a home
to me shortly
after I enrolled
in the Kids Club
program. I grew up
there, and have felt
nurtured and supported by them from the moment
I arrived to this very day. I found many opportunities
at Richstone and was able to attend great schools
thanks to their financial and academic support. I
first got into Vistamar School, a prestigious small
private high school, and with the help of Richstone’s
generous Getzelman Scholarship, I was able to go
to the college of my choice this year -- I am currently
writing from Randolph College in Virginia. But life
hasn’t always been as great; I have endured my share
of grief, loss, and abuse. I’ve worked hard, though, to
overcome and evolve from those times. I am grateful
to have always had Richstone on my side.
I plan to finish my undergraduate studies here at
Randolph College. In the future, I intend to continue
my education in graduate school furthering my
studies in studio art and psychology.
Dear Friends of Richstone,
The Angel Campaign celebrates all of you who made
a difference in the lives of the thousands of children
and families we served last year.
You were the Angels who helped us guide:
· The mother who, for the first time in her life, felt
empowered to take her two pre-school children
out of an abusive home and rebuild their lives in a
safe environment.
· The young adult who chose education over being
a gang member, defying years of emotional abuse
and all those who told him he was a failure.
· The abused child who is now a graduate student,
confident she can achieve the bright future and
better life she’s always imagined.
Your support enables us to continue working with
clients like these and pursue our mission to prevent
and treat child abuse, strengthen families and prevent
violence in families, schools and communities.
A gift of $1,800 will support a child for one year
through counseling and supportive services. We
know that without intervention, the cycle of abuse
will continue. But with your support, we can provide
the counseling, coping skills, parenting classes, and
educational resources families need to help break
the cycle. Join us in helping vulnerable children and
families heal and thrive.
Thank you for supporting our mission to end violence
in families and our communities. By making a tax
deductible donation to our Angel Campaign, you
can make a world of difference in the life of a child.
~ Danielle Ochoa, Richstone Kids Club Alumni
In Remembrance
On November 9, Richstone lost one of its most beloved volunteers, Kosmo. For more than
five years, Kosmo served as loyal therapy dog, patiently listening to the children read and
bringing smiles to our hearts. Kosmo touched many lives and helped so many children he will be deeply missed.

An Evening in Tuscany
On October 20, Richstone held its annual An Affair of
the Heart Gala in the stunning, historical showroom of
Lexus Santa Monica. Themed “An Evening in Tuscany,”
the evening featured silent and live auctions; a tasting
of premiere wines, courtesy of Geoff Nicoll and Bristol
Farms; and a buffet of Tuscan-inspired dishes created
by Chef David Sutton.
Each year, the event recognizes individuals and
businesses that have demonstrated an outstanding
commitment to protecting the welfare of children and
enhancing the lives of families in our community. This
year we were proud to honor long-time supporters
Maryann Guthrie, Les Guthrie (1926-2011), King Harbor
Marina, the Guthrie Family, and John and Janet Zar.

26th Annual Golf Tournament
On September 10, the Richstone Family Center and Wells Fargo
Capital Finance hosted the 26th Annual Richstone/Wells Fargo
Capital Finance/Don Klosterman Memorial Golf Classic at the
tranquil Palos Verdes Golf Club. Savory bites, grilled up by Outback
Steakhouse, and the addition of a helicopter golf ball drop topped off
a great event that raised vital funds to support Richstone’s child abuse
treatment and prevention programs.
The day would not have been possible without the support of our
sponsors, particularly Wells Fargo Capital Finance. We are truly
grateful for the continued caring and compassion of the team from
Wells Fargo Capital Finance, led by Dennis Ascher, Rhonda Noell
and Tricia McLoughlin, who bring together a philanthropic group of
colleagues from around the country to share in the event each year.
