February 2015 Trinity United Methodis t Churc h 605 W. G olf Road Mt.Pros pect IL Pastor’s Page As we begin 2015, we enter the first year in more than a decade without a mortgage. Jere Teed is putting together the 2015 Budget. It is shaking out to around $458,000, down from a high of over $491,000 in 2013, and a still considerable $466,000 in 2014 (when we decided to pay our mortgage every other week instead of every week, cutting the yearly expense in half but spinning the mortgage expense out an additional two years). Our Joash offering changed all of that, thanks be to God, and to your faithfulness. Our 2015 Budget is over $7,900 less than last year, and a whopping $32,800 less than 2013, and that in spite of increases in salary and expenses. Some of these increases are by choice. As Doug Nafis said at the recent Church Council meeting, it is good to give our staff a pay raise and still save money. Other increases reflect higher costs out of our control (water, insurance, etc., have all gone up). In summary, Jere believes we have a good year in front of us, without some of the pressures that we have faced in the recent past. As to 2014, Jere is still working on the year end wrap up, but can report that all bills and obligations, including our 2014 apportionments, were paid in full. Indeed, he was able to pay all apportionments before the end of the year, with no holdovers into January—the first time we have been able to do this in several years. Our next Tidings will be coming out soon with information on Lenten season opportunities here at Trinity. A reminder that Ash Wednesday is February 18, so Lent is nearly upon us, and Easter will soon follow, with Spring on its heels. We have been in consultation about the purchase of two steam tables, with a gift from one of our members, which will allow us to serve hot meals nearly anyplace in the building. Trustees are investigating the purchase. We will have more to report in the near future. There has been significant illness, decline, and death in our Church family over recent months. We celebrate the lives of folks who have changed life situations or passed on. They are and will always be part of us. We also welcome new folks into our midst, including babies. I find the life of faith here at Trinity full of vitality and promise. Do you appreciate the ministry of Trinity? Do you value what we share and have to offer? Is Trinity UMC precious to you? I think it should be. I think this every time I visit someone (as I did Noreen Heyde recently) who has a Trinity prayer blanket on their lap, or see someone coming in out of the cold to PADS, or see smiles of pleasure or attitudes of devotion as we worship together on Sunday morning, or see folks just hanging around enjoying each others’ company. If any of this strikes a chord with you, let me ask; have you considered inviting someone to come and share this blessing with you? It is a long established insight of Church growth that new people come to Church because they are asked by friends and neighbors. Let’s share the blessings with others, and make 2015 doubly exciting. With anticipation in Christ, Pastor Dan Trinity Tidings Page 3 Youth and Scout Sunday Services—February 8th Planned and led by Trinity Youth. He has been president for the last three years and a member of the Crystal Lake UMC for 25 years, retired as of Feb 2014 after 31 years as a Manager in the Facilities program of the U. S. Postal Service, family of five kids, thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. If anyone wants me to expand while he is there then that is ok. I have a power point that goes over why we need a men's ministry in each church. As part of the power point, it can be stressed that each of us plays a part in men's ministry but each man needs to get involved if his heart is truly transformed from being a cultural Christian to a biblical Christian. The major points from this year's Spiritual Congress can be presented since that weekend relates very well to getting men involved. Brad, 815-271-2235 NUT REPORT: A thanks to John Froberg, and Bruce Spillar for running this year’s nut sale. A special thanks to Al McClellan, and Jack Verhasselt for running it in years past. Bruce reports: “The cost of nuts were $2260.80, the bags were $22.56, totaling $2,283.36. The income was $3,184.70, Profit according to my calculations is $901.36.” GOLF OUTING REPORT: The outing has been moved to August 16th. Details to follow. Steve Cutaia, President, UMMen Trinity Tidings Page 9 Trinity Tidings Page 10 United Methodist Women—New Books Purchased There are many good books in the 2015 list. We purchased one book in each category. Leadership has bought two books. What’s So Blessed About Being Poor? Seeking the Gospel in the Slums of Kenya by L. Susan Slavin and Coralis Salvador (Education for Mission – a bonus book counts 1 for Education and 1 for Social Action) In this inspiring exploration of how happiness and holiness can exist in the midst of poverty and illness, two women, one a Maryknoll lay missioner, the other a New York attorney who left her law practice to become a lay missioner, tell their stories of living among the poor in East Africa. Sum It Up by Pat Summitt (Leadership Development) Pat Summitt, a country girl from Henrietta, Tennessee, grew up driving fast and playing hard, learning basketball playing with a homemade backboard against three brothers. She went on to win an Olympic medal and at 22 became head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols. Her autobiography tells the whole story, full of humanity, wit and fierceness, by a giant among coaches who has transcended American sports. Tough Cookies: Leadership Lessons From 100 Years of the Girl Scouts by Kathy Cloninger and John Wiley (Leadership Development) Full of inspired wisdom, this book describes Girl Scouts’ transformative journey to become an integrated, unified movement for girls. It captures the essence of this iconic institution and the principle that have sustained its 100year history of success. Millions of American businesswomen, thought leaders and politicians received their first lessons in salesmanship, money management, marketing, teamwork and fulfillment from Girl Scouts – as will millions more to come. January First: A Child’s Descent Into Madness and Her Father’s Struggle to Save Her by Michael Schofield (Nurturing for Community) At age 6, January Schofield was diagnosed with one of the most severe cases of child-onset schizophrenia on record. Much of this true book takes place before the diagnosis. Michael takes us on this journey with his daughter as they face seemingly insurmountable obstacles and daily challenges with her care and his unwavering commitment to save her from the edge of insanity while doing everything he can to keep his family together. Return to Sender, A Novel by Julia Alvarez ( A Youth book in Social Action) Mari’s family needs work but must hide in fear of deportation to Mexico. Tyler’s family is struggling after Trinity Tidings Page 11 an accident brings their farm to the brink of foreclosure. Their meeting is a stroke of luck for both families, but there are questions: Is Mari’s family undocumented? Did Tyler’s family break the law by hiring them? In a novel full of hope but not easy answers, Alvarez shows how friendship can reach across borders. The Well Women: Crossing the Boundaries by Ladine Housholder (Spiritual Growth) Nine women are reunited on a tour to the West Bank city of Nablus, the historic site of Jacob’s Well. Beneath the stylish veneer of accomplishment and affluence, each woman has been deeply hurt and nearly broken by her life. But as they share their journey to recovery through the healing power of living water from Jesus Christ and the love and support of the group, they truly meet one another for the first time. Linda Askeland Notes & Thanks Telephone Prayer Chain - - for those who do not have a computer or access to a computer and would like to receive regular prayer chain information telephone calls, please call the church office to be included.
