CANVASTOWN SCHOOL NEWS
Canvastown Newsletter
The new term is well underway and the children are busy preparing and practising for
the annual Pelorus Cross Country on Thursday, May 29th. Once again it is being held
at the Hall and surrounding paddocks. We are set to begin around 10.45 am so do come
along to support us on the day. If you’d like to assist by being a marshal or BBQ helper,
then do give us a ring and we’ll soon find you a job for the day.
May
2014
The 150th Celebrations went off really well at Easter, despite the inclement weather.
Unfortunately it was too wet for the outdoor games and horse events but these have
been rescheduled for Monday, June 2nd, Queen’s Birthday Weekend. A highlight of the
day will be the inaugural, inter-district, Miners Challenge Trophy Tug-of-War. We
want Canvastown to be the first name engraved on the trophy so let’s get a team
together and show them who the winners are. We look forward to seeing you all there
on the Monday, ready to have some fun and win a few prizes.
Our Year 7 and 8 students were to have participated in an overnight Leadership Camp
at Te Hora Marae last week. However the coordinator/tutor had to postpone at the
last minute so we look forward to doing this at a later date.
This week, we welcome two Education Review Officers to our school. They will be
looking at how well our children are learning and achieving and how our school supports
them in their endeavours. We trust they enjoy fine weather and being associated with
a small, rural school that has a distinct family atmosphere.
Have a good month

GREETINGS FROM THE TROUT HOTEL
THE HOUSE OF FORD
The pumpkin and carrot weigh in was held, and although not everyone who entered into
the competition, entered a pumpkin, but what a winner 100.3 kg one, wow, Jenny from
the Havelock garage took the main prize she also picked up with her 2nd pumpkin the
wide girl prize. Karen K won the ugly fugley pumpkin and Maria won the best dressed.
The school entry was won by Aria. A huge thanks to all who participated, the day was a
lot of fun and snacks were all pumpkin and carrot based, with Joy’s stunning carrot cake
tasting a 10/10. The carrots were few, think most people ate theirs before the competition,
but we did get the biggest although not big enough to register on the official scales, that
honor went to Ron
The inter pub pool has begun, but it’s not too late if you want a game. It’s played on a
Sunday arvo on a home and away roster, Laurie is the team captain, but ring the Trout if
you want to join in.
Congrats to Spud and Fono, on the arrival of their wee boy Benjamin and Megan and
Ewan Wilson who are the proud new parents of a wee daughter call Lila. Well done.
Call in and get your tickets to our fancy dress mid winter Hooley, to be held on Saturday
28th of June. We will have entertainment and a beautiful medieval super. Cost
$25.00each.
If anyone wants to join in the pub tug of war team which will perform on the 150th games
day queens’ birthday please let us know.
Thanks for the get well cards and warm wishes I received when I had my hip replacement,
and the bad news for me is I’m fit for work again, so I guess Andrew will be on his way, I
have so enjoyed his meals and know if you have been in for dinner the last few weeks you
would have as well.
Don’t let the cold put you off from enjoying an evening out, our fire is being well stoked
and Wednesday is still BUGGER DAY.

150th Thank You to Local People
The 150th Celebration Day was a great success despite the rain. The organising committee of Graeme
Barsanti, Nanette Buchanan-Brown, Karen Kellaway, Les and Pauline Douglas, Dianne Dixon, Elaine
Wilson, Linden Armstrong, and Rosemary MacCallum would like to thank everyone who stepped up
to help as the day crept closer:
Mel Cherry and Nicky Eade who joined the committee;
Al Skipper and Charlie Wilson in charge of Entertainment, Ruth and the children of the district, Dr
Bird and the Barbershop Quartet, the Ngati Kuia Kapa Haka Group Whatukura, and local musicians
who entertained us on the day.
Thanks also to Lindsay Jefferis for making such a great job of the sign advertising the event , to
Sarah-Jane Johnsen for taking on the running of the horse events, Keith for getting the gold bearing
gravel, Laurie who stepped up to help with the speed panning, Susan Foster for keeping the Face
Book page current and to Rita Jacobsen for her website Pelorus People, to Jenny and Colin for the
quilt raffle, to Tomfor letting us use his paddocks, and with Les, and others who prepared the ground
and resurrected the fences afterwards. To Noel Wallace for organising the wood chops, James Donald
for the vintage machinery, to Marf for helping with the time capsule and set up for the day, all the
helpers in the kitchen day and night, and to Ray and Karen Cresswell at The Trout for always saying
Yes to every request.
A special mention needs to be made of the work of Heather, Rosemary, Marguerite, and Linden
known as “the Rush Girls” for the hours of work put in to create such a wonderful historical snapshot
for our community. Also to Dianne who travelled from Waitaria Bay each month to attend committee
meetings.
Due to the weather the outdoor events will take place at Queen’s Birthday weekend on the Monday.
