INTERNATIONAL MASTER BIKE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION Bob McKay Master Bike Builder, Master Judge of McKay’s Cycle Creations, CANADA - atop his latest build. INTERNATIONAL MASTER BIKE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION Page 2 Elginburg, Ontario Canada’s “HALL OF FAME” nominee, Bob McKay, although he admits to being retired from bike building, has been very busy this past year. Early in 2009, Bob became Canada’s first IMBBA Certified Master Bike Builder accumulating over 600 points. Subsequently, Bob applied for and completed his training as a motorcycle Judge. Bob then completed the IMBBA Judges Course and scored the second highest grade. While it seems rudimentary to pass a judges’ course when you been building bikes all your life, Bob has done just that. Bob admits, there is a lot to know about judging, knowledge gained will help Bob with any future bike building endeavors. Completion of the course has made Bob Canada’s first IMBBA Certified Master Judge. With the addition of Bob McKay as a Master Judge, along with several other IMBBA certified judges, Canada now has the requirements of the IMBBA Board of Directors to have a sanctioned IMBBA bike show. That requirement states that there must be at least one IMBBA certified Master Judge and one Judge present to ensure the points system of judging is adhered to. Canada has several certified Judges including; West Coast Judge, Ron Soczecci, along with Central and Eastern judges Tim Armstrong, and Shawn Britten. The IMBBA Canadian contingency is lead by Liz Fritshaw, IMBBA’s Canada representative and Director of Membership. Bike shows sanctioned by IMBBA are considered to be part of a fair and exact methodology to judging ones talents, skills and knowledge of bike building. “Canada should be proud!” Says Jeff Starke, IMBBA president. Just when you think Bob McKay has done enough for the industry, in fall 2009, Bob became a nominee for the IMBBA “Hall Of Fame”. This is the most distinct honor that can be rendered to a Master Bike Builder. The Hall of Fame has many requirements. Each member is required to have at least 20+ years experience not only in bike building but also charities, education, training and sponsorship of events. In other words, one must be willing to give back to the industry. Bob has made a career of doing just that. This is just a example of the many contributions Bob has infused into the industry, he also, sponsored many events, created parts for Custom Chrome that many in the industry used on their bike builds, Bob has appeared in Easy Riders, Twin Cam Chopper, Custom V-Rod, (featuring the first, Custom V-Rod) Bob also built and sponsored Bikes for Canada’s NHL players and events. Bob has been invited on several TV series that featured bike building and a Canadian Chopper Series. He has been featured on the VQ Magazines Master Bike Builder. Bob also contributed with Hot Bike Magazine by writing TECH TIPS. Besides being featured in well over 100 bike publications, Bob is known worldwide for his bike building talents. He also helped with Bernice McNaughton High School Bike Klub, instructed by Marc Mazerolle and encouraged Ryan Robinson to participate in passing down the legacy of what true Bike Builders do. This is in keeping with IMBBA’s mission of leaving the industry better than the way you found it. Visit Bob’s web site at www.mckayscyclecreations.com and congratulate him on the Honor of “Hall of Fame” INTERNATIONAL MASTER BIKE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION Page 3 IMBBA TO HOST 1st ANNUAL “CUSTOM BIKE SHOW” at FULL THROTTLE SALOON - STURGIS 2010! Mondo Parra’s will be present along with Bob McKay and will be inducted into the IMBBA Hall of Fame, Mondo Porras, owner of Denver’s Choppers, started building custom bikes with his partner Denver Mullins in San Bernardino, CA in 1967. Denver’s Choppers was instrumental in starting the aftermarket industry that is flourishing today with custom parts including; frames, custom choppers and especially our custom Springer front ends. Denver’s Choppers started manufacturing parts for their own custom motorcycles and designing the stretch bikes which are in vogue today. Denver’s Choppers was the first company to manufacture the long down tube stretch frames, or the Swedish style as they became known, which was actually Denver’s style (there’s even a motorcycle club in Sweden called Denver’s Choppers, so named after the long stretch bikes.) Denver’s Choppers became famous worldwide in the early 1970’s, and their parts have been used by world renowned bike builders over the last three decades. Denver’s Choppers has been and will continue to be one of the leading trend setters in the industry. With a Star studded invite of many of the industries giants on hand to welcome these Builders into the IMBBA Hall of Fame; this will be quite an event for all. Both inductees have a very colorful career in bike building and the press and spectators will enjoy the ceremony. Come out and support the industry and welcome these giants to the IMBBA “Hall of Fame” and thank them for their contributions to the Industry and see their outrageous bikes! Mondo Parras PAUL YAFFE TO RECEIVE IMBBA HALL OF FAME AWARD Paul Yaffe, a.k.a. Bagger Nation has been nominated and elected by the IMBBA Board of Directors to be indoctrinated into the IMBBA Hall of Fame. This distinction has only been awarded to 17 Master Bike Builders in the entire world, per Jeff Starke, IMBBA president. The requirements to be nominated are extensive. To become a nominee, one must give back to the industry. One must make sacrifices to help and mentor others in the industry and help them to succeed by various channels, such as, charities, education and sponsorship of youth, encouraging them to learn the trades of motorcycle building are just a few examples. INTERNATIONAL MASTER BIKE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION Page 5 Paul’s bike builder prowess and expertise demonstrate not only the art but the actual skills and trade of bike building. IMBBA plans to present Paul with his Master Bike Builder award at the next major bike event of his choice. Aurora Engineering’s Douglas Hall, along with his team, offers on-line training programs to colleges and technical schools as well as the “how-to” motorcycle industry. AE’s most recent endeavor, “Chopper 101 Fundamentals” book takes a builder/enthusiast through step by step of building, from scratch, a chopper motorcycle. The course is well written, clear with plenty of pictures and covers everything start to finish. IMBBA has reviewed and endorsed the book by Hall’s team and now offers it as part of the Technician to Bike Builder Certification process. Meaning if you are a technician working towards becoming IMBBA certified as a Bike Builder, this course can get you points towards your certification. In addition, this partnership with Aurora Engineering has opened the door for the other educational courses needed for certification all the way up to Master Bike Builder. A CNC course expected to be released by Aurora by spring 2010. Other trade courses including IMBBA’s Judge’s course for certification is now completed and will be published and available to enroll in by late January 2010. IMBBA has been meeting with several aftermarket industry leaders and as such will be working with Aurora Engineering to provide documentation and training services of their products both on-line, and printed book format. This will enable builders, shop owners and the like to attend these IMBBA trade courses for these aftermarket products. The value to this is two-fold, to help shops become certified an important feature motorcyclists are now looking for prior to allowing shops to work on their motorcycles, and provide the aftermarket organizations assurance that their products are being installed properly. All of the products will have a test at the end of INTERNATIONAL MASTER BIKE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION Page 7 the course, if the student passes the test; IMBBA will certify that individual in that aftermarket area of expertise. Courses will be available, on line, to purchase by 30 November 2009. So, stay tuned!
