Blessings in a Backpack feeding
hungry local kids on the weekends
Volunteers Ryan McKinney, Jacob Godbey
and Kaitlyn Kindzerski stand with just
some of the bins full of food ready to
become Blessings in a Backpack.
Blessings in a Backpack is receiving a
lot of local support, including a grant of
$4,999 from Central Montana
Foundation.
A program developed to feed
hungry kids on the weekend, Blessings in
a Backpack is new to Lewistown thanks to
program director Jamie Sura. It’s a way to
feed kids who may not be getting enough
nutrition on the weekends. And it is
currently serving 230 kids in Kindergarten
through sixth grade.
Hungry kids miss more school, have
lower test scores, behavior and health
issues. Kids must qualify for free lunch in
the Lewistown school district to qualify
for Backpacks. And more than 200 of our
students do.
“These kids come to school Monday
mornings drained,” said Jamie.
Each Friday, the qualifying kids whose
families have not opted out of the
program are sent home for the weekend
with enough food to sustain the child until
Monday when they can get a free
breakfast at school.
The “backpacks” are actually gallon
sized Ziploc bags filled with tuna fish,
ramen noodles, soup, oatmeal, Pop Tarts,
granola bars, fresh fruit and two juice
boxes. The bags are discreetly placed in
the child’s regular backpack and they are
set for the weekend.
She said sometimes on Friday
afternoons the kids just skip and jump
down the school hall and tell everyone
that they got their backpack.

Improving the Quality of Life in Central Montana!
Eastman designs new logo for CMF
After receiving a Major Grant from
the Central Montana Foundation last
spring, the Lewistown Redbirds baseball
team wanted to show its appreciation by
placing two CMF signs at their field. This
provided a great opportunity to update the
CMF logo.
Local sign artist, Kirk Eastman,
designed a logo that conveyed the
foundation’s commitment to Central
Montana.
“It is so awesome,” said Diane Lutz,
CMF secretary. “We are excited to incorporate it into all of our CMF paperwork.”
The new logo has a simple mountain
graphic to represent Central Montana.
Underneath that is a swooping line and
the word “Foundation” – both
representative of a foundation, or support,
under Central Montana. The sun rising
over the mountain symbolizes optimism.
This is al tied together with the tagline,
“Helping Improve Central Montana.”
“I tried to come up with the essence of
what a foundation does,” said Kirk. “They
do good work and help a lot of Central
Montana causes. I believe in trying to help
our area.”
Diane said Kirk was also kind enough
to donate this design to CMF.
“To me this speaks volumes about
Kirk’s own commitment to the Central
Montana area,” she said.
Blessings, cont’d from p. 1
“They’re so proud to get it,” she
said.
Jamie said many local
organizations have fundraised for the
program, including the students at
Highland Park who raised $354. And
Albertsons has generously donated
many items, giving Jamie, who does
all of the shopping, the ability to
purchase more for these kids.
“I did reach my goal for this
year,” said Jamie. “Now that we have
pledged to feed these 230 kids we
need to keep on fundraising for the
next two years.
“I’m telling you, the people in
this town are just unbelievable.”

Ray Brady resigns MCF advisory board;
Jim Hubble, Debbie Bricker join
Changes are on the horizon for the Central Montana Medical
Center Foundation Advisory Board. With the resignation of Ray
Brady, positions were opened and two qualified newcomers were
found.
Ray has been on the advisory board since its inception in 1994.
But since the passing of his wife, he has been spending more and
more time at his condo in Great Falls. Ray felt if would be best to step
down.
“I think they’ve done a good job for the last few years and would
hope they would continue that,” he said recently of the advisory
Ray Brady
board. He said as far as things he felt the
advisory board has accomplished, the clinic at
Stanford was quite important.
“The foundation is supportive of many different projects in the
western part of the area,” said Ray.
Debbie Bricker, of Moore, and Jim Hubble, of Stanford, are
joining the advisory board. Jim said Ray was influential in getting
him to consider the position as the two were involved in the start up
of the Stanford clinic.
“I’m also loyal to CMMC,” said Jim. “It’s a great institution.”
Debbie Bricker
Debbie, who has always been an active volunteer, brings another
view to the board. As the parent of a daughter with a lot of major
medical issues, Debbie has spent a great deal of time in hospitals in Great Falls and Seattle.
“I feel that our hospital is important to the community,” said Debbie. “I want to make
sure it stays viable.”

Ag community finds creative ways to give
Denton area farmers have come
up with a unique way to donate to the
Emergency Room fund. Since times are
tough and cash is short, these farmers
have pledged bushels of grain to the fund.
“We thought it was something we
wanted to do,” said Nita Bronec. She and
husband Claude are strong supporters
of the medical community as there is a
strong first responder unit at Denton. And
they, like many others, have utilized the
ER.
This fall alone, Denton grain donors
gave nearly $5,000!
The farmers marketed their grain as
usual. But at the elevator they expressed
that “x” number of bushels at whatever
the market value is will be donated to the
Medical Center Foundation Emergency
Room Fund. And then elevator officials
sent a check to MCF instead.
“I would like to see this happen every
year,” said Bob Taylor. “It’s an easy thing
to do, and a bushel of grain here or there
is hardly missed.”
Nita said it was an easy way to donate.
She said elevator employees at Moccasin
knew exactly what to do, taking care of
the whole donation process. All the
Bronecs had to do was tell them how
many bushels to donate.
If you are interested in participating
by donating grain to the ER fund, contact
Dolly Lee at 567-2557.

Nancy and Ron Gerdrum
The agriculture community has shown
a great deal of support for the CMMC
emergency room fund. Ron and Nancy
Gerdrum of Grass Range have come up
with another unique way to do this.
They donated the sale of a calf to the
E.R. fund.
Ron has been raising Black Angus
cattle for his entire life, while Nancy has
been an emergency room nurse for more
than 30 years.
“We both feel that it’s a vital thing for
the community and surrounding areas,”
said Nancy. “My husband appreciates
having an emergency room.”
The Gerdrums saw what the Denton
farmers were doing with grain donations
and thought that would be a great idea for
them this year. But their biggest hope is
that this will inspire other cattle ranchers
to give in the same way.
She said it, too, was an easy way to
give. Once the calves were sold in the fall,
Ron averaged the sale price and donated
the equivalency of one.
“It’s a way to donate,” said Nancy.

Hertel family
supports ER fund
John Hertel
When John Hertel passed away in
August, his wife Dixie chose to give
graciously to the Emergency Room Fund.
And she encouraged others to give in the
same way.
John had Parkinson’s Disease. One
of the side effects was pneumonia, which
brought him to the E.R. several times.
“They were wonderful,” Dixie said of
the doctors and nurses at the emergency
room. “Very friendly, very willing to do
anything they could.”
John was a biology teacher and taught
at Moore and Denton. After he retired
from teaching, the Hertels moved back to
the family ranch at Moore. He was a state
senator for eight years and was actively
involved in his community as chairman
of the Port Authority, the Moore School
Board and Moore Farmer’s Oil.
The couple, who was married 53 years,
has three children and five grandchildren.
One thing Dixie noticed during all
of their visits to the E.R. was the lack of
privacy. She said this, in addition to
appreciating all the staff at CMMC did for
her husband, is another reason she chose
to give back.
“They were wonderful. They helped us
all the time,” said Dixie. “I think it’s very
important.”
1/4 million dollars
have been raised for the ER!
In less than one year our community
friends and family gave toward the ER
remodel by giving $25, $100 or even
$5,000. It all adds up!
We will continue to fundraise
for the ER in hopes to reach
the timeline to build.

Deupree leaves generous gift to Hospice
When Dave Deupree was suffering from lung
cancer, Hospice was there.
“They always had people available at any
time day or night,” said daughter-in-law Marilyn
Walling. “They trained us how to do injections.
They gave us anything that we needed and it
wasn’t just medication. It was lotions and other
accommodations.”
Originally from Missouri, Dave came to
Lewistown after he retired in the 1980s. He and
his wife, Alice, brought their children with them
and the family has grown to include several
grandchildren and great grandchildren in
Central Montana.
But at age 85 he was diagnosed with cancer.
Dave and Alice Deupree
Dave was under Hospice’s care for about six
weeks. Marilyn said Hospice made it possible for him to be at home during his remaining
time. And he was so appreciative of what Hospice did for him, that Dave wanted to give
back.
So his estate donated $4,800 to Hospice.
“He just felt like they had done so much to help him, he just wanted to return the favor,”
said Marilyn. “He wanted to help other people to pay for drugs, nurses, gas, or whatever.
And Dave did like one nurse in particular, a nurse who told him jokes.
“It was just so nice to be able have all the things you needed and not have to put him in
the hospital or have somebody stay with him that he did not know.”
Conroy Trust gives to Judith Gap Endowment
Even if you haven’t lived in your hometown for years, you always remember where you
came from. One former Judith Gap resident has remembered his small community with a
generous donation.
Kenneth Conroy graduated from Judith Gap high school in 1964. He went on to
become an English profession and eventually the Dean of an English department in
Illinois. Today, his immediate family is all in the Midwest. But his roots are here.
The Kenneth Conroy Trust recently donated $5000 to the Judith Gap Endowment.
Endowment funds are used to improve the town. Endowment members will determine
where the money is used.
“I’m sure education is preferred,” said endowment secretary Dorothy Brook. “It’s
substantial [the donation] in many ways and helpful.”
She said the endowment has done quite a bit of funding for the school, including a
recent purchase of laptops. And since Kenneth was in education, Dorothy thinks that is
where the donation will be needed the most.
“It’s greatly appreciated by the endowment and by those that receive the benefits of the
endowment,” said Dorothy.

10 Reasons to Renew the
Montana Endowment Tax Credit
1. The tax credit makes it possible for people to give more than they might otherwise.
2. The tax credit works.
3. In a state where the economy is defined by the
extraction and exportation of natural resoures the
Endowment Tax Credit provides a vehicle for
Montanans to leave part of their wealth to their
hometowns in perpetuity and be rewarded for that
good behavior.
4. It’s a tool that incentivises giving but allows donors and
local communities to decide how to invest their
donations and how the earningS should be used.
5. It’s an important tool for building permanent endowments.
6. Endowments perpetuate the values and priorities
of donors.
7. Endowments create legacies.
8. Endowment gifts afford donors the option to perpetuate
their annual gifts.
9. Montana faces a lack of philanthropic wealth.
10. Endowments provide independece from economic,
governmental and political forces for nonprofits,
creating programs that stand the test of time.
