If you want to be successful in road racing, you’ll need a strong team and a
good tactic. Both can decide between victory or defeat. Win or lose. However,
especially for outsiders, it’s not easy to understand how important a team’s tactic
actually is. We accompanied the LKT TEAM BRANDENBURG on a race weekend
and asked the trainer Michael Max to give us a small insight into the basics
of road racing tactics! You’ll fnd the interview on page 21!

Tactics are very important, because you start as
a team and not as a solo competitor. The aim
is to support each other, to provide slipstream,
to not leave a rider alone in case of a damage

of stuff. The single teams work out a tactic to

In the end, the tactic
didn’t work out very well.
Do you analyse and discuss the races after
wards? Not always, but after important races
and tours it’s obligatory and useful. We then
analyse and discuss the race and the tactic for
the next stage.
How long does it take for beginners to learn
road racing tactics? It depends! There are
people who have been riding cycle races for 20
years and who haven’t really understood it yet
(ltaughs). In general, tactical riding is learned and
improved throughout the youth classes, so that
young riders already know a lot about racing tactics and are really good at them. This knowledge
is essential for a rider’s success. Cycle racing is a
team sport and a team must work well together
in every respect. Team spirit and camaraderie are
thus important aspects. Only a team that works
well together can achieve best results and its
riders can excel themselves again and again.
Thank you for the interview, Michael!
For newcomers, it’s diffcult to
learn road racing tactics.

MAIK THE
MECHANIC!
REPLACING THE CHAIN
THE BICYCLE CHAIN IS A CLASSIC WEARING PART AND SHOULD THEREFORE BE REPLACED REGULARLY, BEFORE
ITS ELONGATION AFFECTS THE CHAINRINGS OR THE CASSETTE. MAIK THE MECHANIC SHOWS YOU HOW EASY
IT IS TO REPLACE THE CHAIN AND HOW TO RECOGNISE WHETHER A CHAIN NEEDS TO BE CHANGED!
For replacing a chain you need
• a chain wear indicator
• a chain tool or chain link pliers
• a connector link, if necessary
• and, of course, an adequate replacement chain
1 | In order to determine the wear of the chain, place the chain wear indicator on the chain. If the measurement fnger falls into the chain link, it should
be replaced at any rate.
2 | First step: Remove the old chain
There are two different possibilities of how a chain is fxed. It either has
chain rivets or it is connected with a joining link at the ends. First, you
have to shift the chain onto the smallest chainring at the front and onto
the smallest sprocket at the rear. The chain tool can then be applied to
any of the chain links to push the pin out completely in a clockwise direction. The chain opens and you can take it off.
3 | Second step: Cut the new chain to length
The new chain is longer than necessary, that’s why it needs shortening.
First, you have to thread in the new chain. Now take both ends and pull
them together until the rear derailleur is slightly tensioned. The excess
chain links can be removed by pushing the pins out of the respective
links. ATTENTION: There are also directional chains. Please see the
manual for more information.

4 | Third step: Join the chain
You can join the chain again with a chain tool. To do so, you have to pull
the ends together, place the chain tool on the open rivet pin and push
the pin all the way in until it snaps in.
5 | Afterwards, the pin needs to be broken off. Now you can check
whether the chain link can be moved easily. If not, you can bend it up a
little until it moves.
6 | The alternative: A connector link
If the chain comes with a connector link, the procedure is even easier.
Open the connector link with chain link pliers and remove the old chain
before threading in the new, shortened chain.
7 | Now you have to remove a half chain link before joining the chain with
the connecting link. 10- and 11-speed connector links are disposable. Be
sure to read the direction marked on the link with an arrow.
8
8 | Turn the crank until the connector link is on the top. Once the chain

is tensioned, for example by applying gentle pressure to the right pedal,

the chain will be closed completely.

make sure you’re always applying the right torque, you’ll need a reliable helper. The ROSE 2-24 nm torque
wrench is a high-quality precision tool and a must-have for a secure mounting of add-on parts such as stems,

sensitive carbon parts. The nm scale can be easily read through a window. The ROSE 2-24 nm torque wrench

ONLINE RATINGS // ROSE 2-24 nm torque wrench
by Heiko H.
(written on 04.11.2014)
A simple, value for money torque wrench. In my opinion absolutely sufficient for hobby cyclists.
When adjusting the torque, you need to turn the handle a lot. The release point can be felt well
(head tilts off slightly). My wrench releases at the adjusted torque with relatively high precision.
In short: A good hobby tool at this price. Those who need more precision and more exact adjustability, should opt for another, presumably a lot more expensive torque wrench.

Excellent product! Wide adjustment range from only 2 nm to 24 nm. Good handling and, last but not
least, available at an unbeatable price. Highly recommendable. Especially for users who place a high
value on the right torque when working with low torque values, too.

Works flawlessly! Scale in steps of 2 nm. Uneven numbers have to be “guessed”, but a good eye
is sufficient. Definitely keeps up with products from other manufacturers! Clear buying recommendation.

At this price… and for occasional screw tightening, excellent!!! Uneven numbers are not shown, but
that’s not too bad. The torque releases when the head tilts off and you hear a gentle cracking noise. For
me buying this tool was well worth it.

Let alone the dimensions of BIKETOWN. The
people who come here love bikes as much as
we do. They love to look at them, touch them
and to test them. For this, you need enough

A loud screech attracts our attention. “Just

Guide RS brakes are awesome. They are
responsive and offer great braking power modulation,” she pronounces her judgement.
Left: Carina is measured.
Right: Holger and “his” bikes.
However, space is only one key factor of the bicycle town’s secret to
success. For the company, the time factor is also an important key to
the customers’ satisfaction. “There are no guidelines on advisory service
here in BIKETOWN. This wouldn’t even make sense, as our customers
all have different needs and wishes,” Holger explains. “It goes from
‘Hi, is this shifter also available in silver?’ to ‘Hi, I want to start mountain
biking. What do I need for it?’. The frst conversation lasts two minutes,
while the other may last up to three to four hours. It’s our pleasure to
make time for our customers.” “Do you have a special type of cyclist
you like to advise most?” I’d like to know. Holger’s eyes are wandering
as he thinks hard. “No. Actually not.” He answers just a few seconds later.
“But I always look forward to meeting some certain people. We have
a large number of regulars here, who we all know by name. We even
know their favourite football club. Some of these customers, mostly
men, come here to buy a new bike every year.

In the meantime, Carina has come back from
her test ride. Riding position and size are fne,
now it’s about choosing the single parts for
the bike. For this, we walk over to a huge
touchscreen and start the confgurator. Here,
the fndings gained during the advisory service
and the test ride can be translated and visualised. You can exchange and replace almost
all parts of the bike with new ones, if you
like – provided that they are compatible with
the respective model. Sometimes, not always
though, you have to pay a small additional
charge for the alternative parts. However, the
assembly of the parts is for free.

“How many bikes do you actually have

while Carina is still discussing the choice
of the right handlebar with a member of

which consists of 300 to 350 models here.
When fnding an interesting bike online, the

“Finished pimping?” I ask Carina after she has left the confgurator to
join us. “Yep, now it’s perfect,” she says beaming all over her face.
“I’ve exchanged a few parts and now it’s exactly as I imagined!” “Is
it normal that you spend so much time advising your customers?” I
ask Holger. Again, he gives me a slap on the shoulder. “A relationship
with a satisfed customer is more sustainable, proftable and nicer for
us than getting 50 euros more at the cash desk,” he says in a fatherly undertone. “That makes sense,” I admit shamefacedly. Just like
almost everything makes sense in BIKETOWN. Whether it’s the open
room concept of the architecture, the presentation of the products
or the employees’ passion for cycling. The BIKETOWN store seems
like a total artwork. I politely say thank you to Holger and Carina for
taking their time to give me a look behind the scenes. Then I leave the
impressive building through its glass portal. Standing outside, I turn
around to once again look up to the glass façade and the ROSE logo.
One thing is clear: The BIKETOWN store is a bike temple and a true

Our local guide Elvis gives us some information on Cres, one of the largest islands of the
Adriatic Sea. We start with a small sightseeing tour through the island’s capital that is
also called Cres. We ride through narrow,
winding alleys, listen to the church bells and
marvel at the town gate of the old and long
dilapidated town wall.
However, we are not here for sightseeing
only. We also want to discover the island
by bike and so we start off riding along the
harbour. Without hurry, we ride up a hill on
a good gravel path along the bay past olive
groves and focks of sheep, while always
having a view of the harbour and the city. The
sun is doing us good: It’s not too hot and yet
its “shorts and t-shirt” weather.

Contact points between body and bike
Hands, feet and the bum – these are the
parts of a cyclist that are in contact with the
bike. Nonetheless, here, too, it holds true that
everyone is different. Everyone is an individual
with their own individual preferences. Let’s
start from the ground up, with the feet. There
are two different pedal systems: click pedals
and platform pedals.
Platform pedals can be used with all different
kinds of shoes and allow you to quickly and
comfortably get on and off the bike. Click pedals
are ideal for performance-oriented cyclists, as
they offer better power transfer and also allow
for a pull phase when pedalling. Shoe and
pedal are frmly connected with each other,
the connection can be loosened by moving
the foot to the side. However, this can also go
wrong from time to time.
The right frame size is essential
for a relaxed and effcient ride.
Another very effective tuning measure is the
choice of the right tyres. “For this, we frstly have
to fnd out where the customers mainly ride their

they mainly ride on asphalt, the 32C SCHWALBE
Marathon Supreme tyres (item no. 1169744), for
example, are recommendable. These tyres roll well
and can yet manage gravel paths or solid forest
soil. Those who mainly ride on unpaved roads
should better go for trekking tyres like the 37C
CONTINENTAL Contact Extra Light ones (item no.:
1712333). Thanks to their width, these tyres do not
sink into the soil. Moreover, they have a greater
tread depth and offer better grip when cornering.”

A tip for click pedal beginners: Choose the

you have to determine the distance of the
sitbones frst. A piece of corrugated cardboard and a hard chair can help you. Based
on the measured data and the intended feld
of use, the ROSE customer consultant can
then give you an individual recommendation. For selected brands, ROSE offers their
customers a four-week test phase, in which
they can test the saddle and exchange it for

GARMIN VECTOR 2S pedal-based power meter*
A
mbitious cyclists not only measure their heart rate, but also their power output. Watt-based training directly
and objectively documents the rider’s performance. The Garmin Vector 2S pedal-based power meter allows
you to precisely measure the intensity of your training and to perform power-based training. For this, the power
output is directly measured where force is applied: at the pedal. The sensors measure slightest deflections of the
pedal spindle through your entire pedal stroke and by comparing that measured deflection to a factory-calibration,
Vector can determine how much force you’re applying to the pedal. It measures a few hundred times per second.
The evaluation is made via diverse bike or multisport computers such as the Garmin Edge.
