Kiteboard Tour Asia’s 5th Season Set in Boracay This Month
Asia’s top kiteboard racers will again battle it out on the flat waters of Boracay beach for the much
anticipated Kiteboard Tour Asia on February 19 to 23
BOLABOG, BORACAY
Boracay Sun
Kta, now on its fifth season
is Asia’s largest kiteboarding
compet it ion. It wi l l be
hosted by Aqua Boracay by
Yoo, a prestigious beachside
residential development along
Bulabog beach.
Bulabog beach, a shor t
walk away from the White
Beach is being tagged as
the watersports haven of
the island where all the kite
action takes place. The area
is considered a kiteboard spot
because of its shallow waters
and strong winds just enough
to raise the adrenaline rush
among riders.
The 5-day event in Boracay is
the third round of the 20132014 season of the KTA that
eyes hundreds of riders from
Asia and other parts of the
world. For this season, riders
will battle in three events
– freestyle, twin tip and
raceboard class racing.
Winners of the tournament
will get US$15,000 split
equally between the Freestyle
RB and TT classes for the top
three positions - male and
female.
On February 19, an opening
par t y is scheduled to
welcome all the participants
and spectators of the event.
Competition proper will
meanwhile start on February
20 until the morning of
February 23. Awards night
is scheduled on February
23 with a closing part y
afterwards.
Thailand. Last January 3 to 5,
more than 80 kiteboard riders
also converged in Boracay
for the second leg of the 1st
Philippine K iteboarding
Tour.
The 2013-2014 season of the
Asia tour opened in Phuket,
Thailand on December 17-20
last year. Round two was
held in Bintan, Indonesia last
January 22 to 26. The final
round is tentatively scheduled
on M arch i n Pranbur i,
The tour was organized by
the Philippine Kiteboarding
Association, which aims to
harness the talents of the
Filipino kiteboarders as well
as to promote the country’s
top k iteboarding spots ,
including Boracay.
Stakeholders in Boracay have
been consistent in promoting
ways to save the island from
any environmental destruction. One proof is the strict
implementation of the 25
plus 5 easement rule, which
prohibits structure along
the white beach. However,
Sangkalikasan Producers
Cooperative (SPC), a nongovernment organization
reveals that there are still
some environmental concerns
on the island that have to be
addressed.

Island Boy Replies
I
n the last issue of the Boracay Sun, I read an article,
called Lonely Island Girl. It was about a girl who fell
in love with an island boy. But like most non-fairy tale
stories, life has torn them apart. 10 years later they meet
again at a party; one filled with hope, the other drunk
with lust, which meant for one party, disappointment.
The story seemed familiar. It was somehow, too familiar. Then I noticed that I did know this story! I’ve lived
through it. It was about me!
I mean, of course newspapers usually aren’t discreet
about giving out names, but in this case it was anonymous, adjusted to the delicate matter from what the
article was actually about. But I knew it was about me.
I knew that story and I knew who wrote it.
Neither was I furious, nor disappointed, nor offended. I
decided to reply and state my side of the story. Anyway,
“it takes two to tango”, like mommy used to say.
You see, I remember her. I remember every detail.
What song we sang. How she looked. To be honest,
she was gorgeous. She had a smile that could take
your breath away. She had braces. Yes, I dig braces. I
picked her up from work everyday. And yes, I walked
her home everyday.
So, like every human being, I moved on. I grew up. I
moved to the city. I became a city boy. Of course I
hadn’t forgotten about her. She was my happy thought.
She was my city girl. And, I? I was her island boy.
Here comes the flipside: Moving on meant loving
somebody else. I’d learned to love, love with all my
heart, and I had loved a lot. I guess I learned the hard
way.
the summer with
the right vibe than
a music festival?”
Loved the hard way? C’est la vie!
So, now to my defense, I was shocked when I read
that article. I honestly meant no harm. No one does,
I guess? I didn’t know I meant so much to her. It was
not expected. But it was too late.
The T’Boli tribe, to name only
one, will be performing their local
dances and present their artcrafts.
My daugther will assist to the
workshops to learn weaving techniques and other crafts. She may be
young, but it’s never too young to
be exposed to art and music!
They even built a life-size Mangyan
Village on the Festival Site featuring the way of life, art, language,
and music of the 7 Mangyan tribes
of Mindoro.
I really want my daughter to
be immersed in the Philippine
Culture. And since she was born,
we always bring her with us to all
our Philippine and abroad adventures. So here is yet another one!
Yes, I had two girls at the time. Hell, I was chasing
a third!
You see, I have loved. I have lost. What was there
before is there no more. A boy with a heart, the smarts,
the dream, is just a broken man trying to fill his void.
It’s not like I threw it away. She will always be my city
girl. I want it to stay that way.
Just remember that I’ll cherish our memory until the
end of time. And remember, a broken heart is blind.

Boracay with their tentative schedules are the following:
• MS Deutschland, March 7, 2014
• MS Costa Atlantica, March 11, 2014
• MS Superstar Aquarius, April 1, 2014
“Aside from the
confirmed cruise lines,
we are still expecting for
more bookings,” he adds.
Two of which, the MS Costa
Victoria and MS Europa 2 made
their port calls in Boracay that carried more than 3,000 passengers on
January 8 and 9, respectively.
The two European cruise lines are
expected to visit Boracay again on
February 8 and 17.
MS Europa 2, tagged as the world’s
best cruise ship will return first carrying at least 600 passengers, while
MS Costa Victoria will come back
with some 2,300 passengers.
MS Europa 2 will again visit

With this development, Governor
Joeben Miraflores said that it is not
far that Boracay will soon become
as the country’s cruise capital and
also as one of Asia’s top cruise
destinations.
“We want Boracay to be the cruise
capital of the Philippines, so we are
improving our facilities.
Maybe in the future, we will have
a real pier for the cruise ships to
directly dock in the island,” he
says during the recent visit of MS
Europa
“This will avoid the inconvenience
for our visitors during the transfer,” the governor adds. The resort
island, famous for its fine white
sand is already shortlisted as among
the four cruise destinations in the
Philippines alongside with Manila,
Subic and Palawan.
Philippine Port Authority is already
eyeing to develop a new port facility at the other side of the island.
VALUE TO ECONOMY
On the other hand, Atty. Helen
Catalbas, regional director of the
Department of Tourism 6 lauded
the benefits of cruise ship tourism
in the economy, not just in Boracay
but of the region.
“A separate docking area or port
facility for the cruise ship will
soon rise in the northern side of the
island,” he said.
“If one passenger spends at least
P5,000 when they visit Boracay,
we can generate a huge income
not only for the island, but for
other areas in the region,” she says
noting that products sold here also
come from other places in Western
Visayas.
Maquirang meanwhile added that
aside from the revenue, cruise ship
tourism is all about marketing
Boracay to international tourists.
“The value of this cruise ship tourism is to promote Boracay abroad.
In their few hours of stay, tourists
especially the first timers will be
able to have a glimpse of the island
experience that they could share to
others and may entice them to go
back,” he says.
Meanwhile, to cater the growing
number of international cruise

Also part of the expansion project
is the construction of a bigger airport passenger terminal and the improvement of the road network and
upgrading of airport facilities and
equipment.
At least US$300 million in investments will be poured in to complete
the said project.
He also reveals that the local government is willing to enter into
public-private partnership to materialize the plan.
The extension is to accommodate
large international flights of the
Philippines’s seventh-busiest airport.
“We encourage private players to

Miraflores said that the province will focus first on
the recovery of the province on the devastation
brought by super typhoon Yolanda on November

It will be a two- lane thoroughfare with 15 spans

The project has a total budget of P320 million.
With its thrust on tourism, Miraflores said that

Kalibo to Caticlan.
He also reported that expansion projects of the
Kalibo International Airport will start in the first

This expansion will serve as additional spaces for
more flights.
The governor also sees a brighter future for
Boracay.
“More investors are coming. Big corporations are
coming to Aklan and Boracay,” he quipped.
As the New Year begins, Miraflores urged the
Aklanons as well as the businesses that were
affected by the typhoon to regain what they have
lost during Yolanda.
Miraflores said that the proposed expansion of
both ports in Caticlan and Cagban are already set
for implementation this year.
Something to look forward to this year are a
number of infrastructure developments in the
province.
“We expect that both ports would be completed in
time for the upcoming 2015 Asia Pacific Economic

One of which is the construction of the new Kalibo

ack in the early 90s, when
Boracay Island was at its most
pristine state, a German backpacker
saw the opportunity to offer something that the island lacked at the
time. Maximilian Oppacher found
difficulty in reaching out to his
family abroad and in fixing his
holiday itinerary with no electricity and communication to rely on.
Thus, Max saw the opportunity to
provide quality and helpful services
that would cater to the tourists on
the island.
In 1994, Max was able to
improve the phase of tourism in
Boracay through the birth of the
Tourist Center.
As a smaller and more rustic
version than its current state on
White Beach, the Tourist Center
began its humble operation in providing postal and telecom services,
safety deposit boxes, airline and
accommodation booking on the
island.
Since then, the Tourist Center
has evolved into a “One-Stop service center in Boracay” and gained a
good reputation in ensuring safety,
care and comfort to their guests. It
has added more services and products, such as island activities, information counter, business center,
Foreign Exchange (Accredited by
BSP) and credit card services, a
boutique showcasing export quality
clothes and souvenirs, a mini food
mart, beachfront massage, and local
and international travel & tours by
Filipino Travel, Pelagos Tours and
Travels for the Russian market, and
real estate, offered by SPR Real
Estate, Inc. for the Chinese tourists.
The good reputation of the
Tourist Center is owed to its dedication to the dynamic labor force
by providing them with desirable
compensation packages and opportunities for growth, as merited
through the award given to them
by MyBoracay Guide as the Top
Sales Team for 2013.
However comprehensive the
Tourist Center is, many tourists
perceive that it also houses the office
of the Department of Tourism
(DOT). The Tourist Center directs
guest to the office of the DOT, but
it is a private company that shares
the same passion to the rest of the
Philippine’s 7107 islands.
The Tourist Center also holds
office in Bohol. It stands visibly
along the white sands of Alona
Beach on Panglao Island.
For further details and services,
visit the Tourist Center on White
Beach, halfway between Stations 2
and 3. It is open daily from 8am to
12mn including holidays.

BORACAY LITTLE MERMAID
Armed six mermaids, a make-up
artist, a safety diving instructor,
a technical expert, Normeth who
trained and directed the mermaids,
flew to Macau to debut the best of
Philippine Mermaid Swimming

BORACAY SUN
how exciting is that?
A new and fun career to look
forward to! Currently with 31
mermaid instructors from different countries and walks of like,
composed of diving instructors,
swimming instructors, synchronize swimmers, free divers and life
guards, together we are taking over
the underwater World!
With costumes especially created by
a designer who worked for nothing
less than Cirque Du Soleil, our girls
strapped on a harness, and one by
one climbed the 12-meter high ladder to the platform and started the
six-hour show. They went in pairs
for 20-minute intervals, and during
the count down four girls were in
the tank to welcome the new year.
Mind you, this was a very technical
performance as the mermaids need
to free dive while doing mermaid
moves like back flips, swimming
upside down and synchronized
swimming in pairs, while waiving to the crowd and posing for
photos for frantic fans, and while
sipping air from strategically placed
regulators.
During the show there was a minor
malfunction, the compressor that
supplied the air stopped, but due
to their extensive training, which
included safety measures, the girls
kept their poise and without the
audience even noticing, with their
safety in mind, they slowly and
gracefully surfaced. The malfunction was corrected immediately
and the show went on flawlessly.
Which goes to show the importance of putting in the time for
extensive training and the heart to
do what you love that will differentiate the amateurs from the professionals. With more than 2000
people in attendance the show was
a splashing hit!
A Ch inese New Year show,
the second appearance of the
Philippines Mermaid Academy is
already booked from January 28
to February 11 where four of our
mermaids will once again perform
4 times a day in a 30 minutes show
inspired by the famous book The
Rainbow Fish.

DINING OUT IN BORACAY
is one of the most exciting things
to do when on vacation. To sample all the gastronomical wonders
lined up on white beach fills up the
gnawing curiosity of your appetite,
like Aria’s authentic Italian cuisine,
True Food’s Indian dishes, Globy
the Traveling Chef’s enticing international fusion, OJ’s no-frills buffet,
and the list goes on.
But if you are spending a long
holiday on the island and renting a
place with a kitchen, then it is more
reasonable to exercise your cooking skills in your rented home.
The thing that you should need
to know next is where to buy the
ingredients.
As a multi-faceted tourist destination heavily sustained with hotels,
restaurants and private residences,
Boracay is equipped with food markets in every area of the island to
cater to its diverse community.
BA R A NGAY YA PA K , t he
Northern part of the island has small
scale market stalls set up by local
villagers at random points along the
main road. These stalls sell basic
commodities including vegetables, poultry, rice, condiments and
locally packed goods. While fish
is also a basic commodity, its availability nonetheless depends on the
fisher folks’ catch for the day. You
could chance upon local saltwater
fish like galunggong, yellow-fin
tuna, and aloy from a vendor doing
his rounds in the morning or in the
late afternoon.
With a denser population in the
central and southern barangays,
namely Balabag and ManocManoc, there is obviously more
demand on wide-ranging markets.
IN MANOC-MANOC, locals
often go to Boracay Mini Mart for
the dry goods, pre-packed local
brands and fresh produce, which are
sold at a cost lower than most supermarkets on the island. And since
they supply a number of restaurants
and hotels, perishable goods, such
as fruits, vegetables and poultry are
often replenished with new batches.
To get to Boracay Mini Mart:

of Sitio Ambulong (or Station 3)

at the receiving end of the wet
market in D’Mall, Crafts’ towering

the heart of D’Mall is a favorite
among gourmet food lovers for
the fine array of imported delicacies, especially the meat and cheese
selections. Within their appetizing
exhibition of goodies are packets
full of legumes, seeds, nuts, dried
fruits, muesli, pastas, and rice, plus
bottles of honey, jams, oils, pickled
fish, seasonings, fine liquors, spices,
a tempting assortment of biscuits,
crackers, candies, and of course fine
quality Swiss chocolates.
Crafts also has a small deli right
across from it. Crafts Deli offers
imported delicatessen goods like
condiments, jams and conserves,
wines, pastas assorted cheeses,
chocolates, olives, creams, milk,
cereals, and biscuits. They also
have a chilled counter that displays
an endowment of meats like dried

hand, is just as important; whilst a
variety of whole coffee beans are in
store, from Arabica, French Roast,
Robusta and Espresso, to local
Kalinga and Barako, and to flavored
ones with Cinnamon and Vanilla.
You can have a portion of your preferred coffee grinded according to
the type of your coffee machine,
and you can also take a break at
their mini dining area with a warm
cup of their freshly brewed coffee.
They also sell traditional sweets
f rom Italy like Pandora and

from Germany. With a fully airconditioned space, Heidiland guarantees chilled and frozen edibles
like smoked salmon, spinach balls,

short distance from D’Mall is the
island’s famous seafood market,
known as D’Talipapa. D’Talipapa
or “the flea market” houses a grand
display of freshly caught seafood
in the middle of the market’s labyrinth of food and dry goods stalls,
restaurants and souvenir shops,
priced similar to D’Mall. Tourists
often come here to experience the
Filipino dampa dining style, which
comes from a seaside tradition of
choosing your own fresh catch
from the fishermen or vendors and
having them cooked by an affiliated restaurant. You could have
shrimps sautéed in butter or simply
have them steamed with a zest of
calamansi, plus a cup of steamed
white rice, then delight in the
rural Filipino way of eating with
your clean hands. And because the
total price of the meal is inexpensive, families and big groups often
make a big feast out of this dining
experience.
To get to D’Talipapa from the
beach: Turn to the alley next to
Zucchero café in Station 2 and walk
straight until you reach D’Talipapa
on the right hand side. From the
Main Road: Take a tricycle, motorbike or bicycle along the road and
tell your driver to take you there.
You’ll find it in the alley next to
Regency Lagoon.
If you want to buy your ingredients
at a cheaper price, go to Talipapang
Bukid. This community outdoor
market sells all food ingredients at
a low cost. Chicken, fish, meat,
vegetables and fruits are sold here
at 10 to 20 pesos less than at markets frequented by tourists. Part
of the treat is imbibing the hustle
and bustle of the flea market culture
and haggling with the vendors for
a more beneficial price.
To get to Talipapang Bukid from
the main road: turn to the narrow
road across Palawan Pawnshop
and follow the ascending road that
opens up to the market.

pasta dishes for those with a more
western palate.
Café La Carmela This is the

FLIP VILLACORTE: TURNING TRASH INTO ART
SOM E OF TH E MOST
compelling and creative orks
of art come from the simplest
and most abundant of materials
– garbage.
Boracay Sun
IN AN INNOVATIVE twist on
turning trash into art, Boracaybased artist Flip Villacorte spends
his days transforming whatever he
finds at the beach into one-of-akind works of art.
Christian out on the water in Bulabog Beach. Photo By: Nicole Tan
For someone who has worked in a
fishing industry in Malaysia, Flip
chose the island life in Boracay,
instead of settling down in his
hometown in Leyte when he came
back to the Philippines in 2002.
Boracay Island’s 12-year old extreme water sports sensation, Christian Tio,
has been kiteboarding since childhood, starting off with a landboard at age 7.
Ana Treñas
He is now on his third year of
sponsorship with top kiteboarding
companies and associations, which
define his career as a professional
athlete despite his young age.
Christian won his first major award
from the Philippine Kiteboarding
Association during a competition
in Calatagan, Batangas. It was
Christian’s first major win and
taking the top prize has left his
mark in the extreme water sport
community world-wide. Christian
won in 2 categories, taking first
place in “Men’s Freestyle” and the
second spot for “Hangtime”.
Parents, Liezl Tio and Chris Mohn,
are also kiteboarding enthusiasts
who support their son’s love and
talent for the sport.
Boracay’s 12-year old kiteboarding
s en s a t ion h a s a l s o t r aveled
extensively for Asian Tours that
include countries such as China,
Thailand, and Indonesia to compete
as a professional kiteboarder.
He has also joined the World
Championship competition in
Spain.
Christian was set to join the
K i t e b o a r d i n g To u r I C T S I
Philippine Kiteboardng Tour in
January with the first leg of the tour
beginning in Boracay from January
3 to 5, 2014.
“I think this is where I belong, at
the beach,” Flip shares during an
interview with the Boracay Sun.
The following leg of the tour will
be held in Vigan, Ilocos Sur from
January 31 to February 2, 2014.
The third leg will be in Solovieno
, Caliraya on February 7 to 9, 2014
and the final leg of the tour will
be held on March 7 to 9 in Puerto
Princesa, Palawan.
Christian is currently based in
Boracay and trains extensively at
the Freestyle Academy Kitesurfing
School under the guidance of his
instructor and the school’s owner,
Khristopher Ken Nacor. Christian
is also preparing for the 2018 Junior
Olympics to be held in Buenos
Aires when he turns 17 years old.
But what made Flip fell in love with
Boracay more is the biodiversity of
this paradise.

“When I first came here to Boracay,
it seemed like a virgin forest for
me. Pag hindi ka marunong
tumingin ng compass, hindi ka
na makakauwi” (When you don’t
know how to look at a compass,
you can never go home), narrated
Flip while showing me one of his
first masterpieces on the island –
an embossed portrait of the largest
mangrove found in Bolabog beach
back then, which is made of carton.
HIS MEDIUM: GARBAGE
More important, Flip is proud that
no harmful chemicals are used in
his works.
Among the works that catches
attention as you enter his living
room-cum-artist’s studio in his
small abode at the Ati village in
Bolabog is the nearly 3-feet tall
black sculpture of Sr. Sto. Nino
and the Rasta Jesus hanged with
his other creations.
The two unique sculptures –

our Boracay,” Flip said, this time
while carving another “Mother
and Child” image on a cuttlebone,
a hard brittle structure found inside
cuttlefish.
A no t her u n ique qu a l it y i n
Flip’s work is the Bible passages
embedded in every piece he has
created. Instead of him talking,
Flip has chosen the Bible to speak
for him.
HIS ADVOCACY:
SUSTAINABLE CHANGE
Asked how recycled art could
bring change to a community,
Flip flashed a big smile and said,
“creativity reminds people that they
should be part of the change that
they always wanted.”
HIS ADVOCACY:
But what captured more
attention for the two was the
medium used to create them purely seaweeds. Yes, Flip turned
the mushy sea creature into rockhard religious artifacts.
His other seaweed sculptures depict
different “body posed impressions”
adorned with varied tribal tattoos
that represent the rich origin of the
Filipino people.
More than the medium, what is
important for Flip is the message
of his creations.
“I wanted to show the reality to
the people that we must be part
of preserving our environment,
He reminded me that it
was actually the inauguration
of Benigno S. Aquino III as the
fifteenth President of the Republic
of the Philippines. The three-piece
art was created by Flip during
Aquino’s speech.
Flip explained that the f irst
of the three depicts the Ten
Commandments among Christians,
as represented by yellow birds.
When I counted the birds, it was
actually just nine. So where is the
other bird – it was on the other
portrait held by a kid.
“The kid represents us, and the bird
represents the commandment about
honesty. I believe that if we have
honest leaders, change will not be

elusive anymore,” Flip stressed.
The last piece shows an icon that
represents him - a man with a
shoulder length hair wearing a hat
-- for Flip believes that he or we can
be part of that change.
But Flip did not
just wait for change
to happen. He
chose to start it
in the grassroots
com munit y in
Boracay.
Flip encouraged the Ati to venture
into arts and crafts instead of
begging. “Having a model material
recovery facility in Boracay, trash
as the raw material for their work
is never a problem” he added.
"I BELIEVE THAT IF WE
HAVE HONEST LEADERS,
CHANGE WILL NOT BE
ELUSIVE ANYMORE."
Despite the absence
of a peaceful environment like what
most artists need, Flip chose to live
with the Ati community to help
them. He started by sharing his
skills on creative arts and donated
his tools to the Ati community for
them to start a new livelihood.
Though he struggled at first, Flip
never gave up on his dream to
teach the Ati on how to carve and
sculpt pieces made out of abandoned
refuse that they could sell around
the island.
N ow, Fl ip a nd
his group Sanib

mission - to help in
the rehabilitation
efforts of the
victims of super
typhoon Yolanda
especially in his
hometown Leyte.
As of now, the group is still
finalizing the details of the benefit
project. But Flip’s work is always
open for those who wanted to see a
different perspective to art.
If you want to see his creations,
just visit the Ati village in Bolabog
and look for Phillip. The friendly
people in the neighborhood will
lead you to Flip’s home gallery.

He then pointed to the
three-piece art set he
created on June 30,
2010. Flip actually
challenged me to
remember what
happened during
that d ay, but I
failed.

CHANGE
BORACAY SUN
Flip’s concern for the environment
then became his personal signature
as an artist, with a medium based
on garbage as his form of selfexpression. Since then, Flip creates
works of art from discarded corals,
seashells, wood and other natural
items found on the island.
This trash-obsessed artist has
managed to create an inspiring
variety of art – from seaweeds into
sturdy sculptures, seashells into
meaningful carvings and other
trashes like plastic into pleasing
decorations.

t started the day my nephew,
Allan, and I began trimming
the trees back from the forest,
so we could see our house again.
Turns out that one of those trees
was infested with red ants, which,
though attacking us in numbers,
turned out to have too few numbers

After a hard fought battle with

Well, we got the dyke made, but
our ankles had dozens of bites.
The ants were still there. We

To be continued ...
Well, I had no idea how dramatic
the "to be continued" would be.
The next afternoon I was sitting on
my bamboo chair at the deck of our
house reading a book. I glanced
down and saw a few "flying ants"
and a littering of detached wings on
the floor. I initially paid no notice.
At least, they weren't the caterpillars on that floor, which I had
casually brushed aside with my big

doused with pain for a day or two
by their poisonous hairs. Yes, even
the caterpillars here are poisonous!
A nyway, a few minutes later
I looked away from my book

“The PTAA has been holding the travel tour

This year’s expo promises to be the biggest

53 travel agencies and tour operators, 27

and six theme parks in attendance.
In Boracay, this distinct harmony can be heard from a fourpiece family band known as the

The expo will be held at Halls 1 to 4 on the
