After Hours 631-610-5664 WOODRIDGE STRATHMORE TERRACE From The Desk of Ralph Bertelle, Vice President Well, summer will be over by the time this newsletter is published. We tried to have the pool open until September 20th (weather permitting). We also had our yearly meeting and elections and I want to thank all the community members who attended and voted. The HOA only works if you are involved and active in your community. Another way to be active is to know the prospectus, addendums and rules and regulations. The more informed you are the smoother the board and our community members get issues resolved. For example, especially for some of the newer residents, do you know when the garbage is supposed to be put to the curb on the nights before pickup? Take a look and you will see it’s not a day or two before, but the earliest time, in the winter, is 4pm on the evening before pickup. Let’s have a great fall season and hopefully good health is seen by all community members. Meet the Candidates Night, September 9, 2015 Meeting started at 7pm with a great turnout and a thank you from Jim Dalton for all the support the community has given him. The candidates, Edward Garry, Alfred Gattti, Marcella Miller and Pat Sonnesso each gave a brief introduction of themselves followed by a question and answer period. Refreshments were available for all to enjoy. Labor Day Pot Luck Our Labor Day Pot Luck was another huge success. Over 80 residents shared a delicious assortment of food and enjoyed up-beat music along with their neighbors. Thanks to everyone for helping to make this a great end of summer bash! ---Pat Sonnesso Architectural Update by John Pugliese, (631) 828-2015 or E-mail: [email protected] in ela c r Po 9AN9D UP $1. If you are contemplating any exterior remodeling projects, such as windows, doors, roofs, siding or gutters, you will need architectural approval prior to starting your project. You must also notify me when the project is completed for final approval. ES TIL Remember to use licensed contractors. This is for your own protection. Have them include the removal of all debris associated with your project. If you need any assistance, please feel free to call me or e-mail me at the above address. Landscape Requests by Marcella Miller Hi everyone. There are three requirements you must submit in order to have your landscape request approved. I will need a completed Work Request form, a Hold Harmless form, and a copy of the survey of your property that I will keep on file. The forms are at the clubhouse on the bulletin board. All the forms are to be dropped off in the slot at the office door. As I am also a resident here, please try to limit your phone calls and use the above method of contact unless, of course, you have an emergency. If you do not have a survey, you can purchase a copy at Brookhaven Town Hall Research Dept. for $12.34 cash or check. The address of Town Hall is 1 Independence Hill Drive, Farmingville. Please refrain from putting your garbage can and recyclables on the lawn. We also require all cars be parked on the appropriate driveway or parking areas. No vehicle should be parked on any lawn. Thanks so much for your cooperation. Maintenance Requests by Vito Santevecchi You must submit the smaller Work Order form to have your maintenance request approved. I need it completed and placed in the maintenance shack mailbox on Standish Drive. If your mailbox needs replacement, complete a Work Order form and submit it with a check for $18 issued to FAIRFIELD PROPERTIES. The mailbox will be replaced with the house number on it. Thanks so much for your cooperation. Regulations & Security by Harry Scully Our security guards are here for the community. Please do not forget to give the names of your family members to security (331-1208) so the guards can let your visitors in without having to call you first. If your visitor’s name is not on the list, the security guard will call you for permission to let the visitor in. If you do not answer security’s call, the visitor will be turned away. There are no exceptions. We all thank you for your cooperation. For Sale New Olympia carry-on bag with wheels. $50. Call: 631-331-0867. These forms should be on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Please fill them out and deposit them in the mail slot in the Clubhouse. And while it's essential to get a solid seven to nine hours per night, when you occasionally miss the mark, a nap can help a great deal. Hey, it's still a good idea even if you do get enough sleep. Here are seven reasons why you should take a nap right now: Feeling frustrated? According to researchers at the University of Michigan, who published a study recently in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, you should probably take a nap. Participants were asked to complete a particularly frustrating task -- drawing geometric designs on a computer screen. Those who took an hour-long nap before the exercise were able to draw for about a minute, compared to a control group who watched a nature documentary instead of napping. They gave up after 45 seconds. 2. You'll be more alert Whether you're on a long drive or trying to get through a difficult task at work, napping is a great way to increase alertness if you're feeling foggy. A NASA study found that after napping for forty minutes pilots were more alert, and a smaller study found that after just ten minutes participants felt more alert. 3. Just thinking about taking a nap can lower your blood pressure While an actual nap is certainly beneficial, so is the time before you take one. One British study found that participants' blood pressure dropped before they even fell asleep -- just anticipating the nap they were about to take was enough. 4. It helps you remember more A study conducted by researchers in Germany found that taking an hourlong nap can dramatically improve our ability to remember information. For the study, participants were asked to remember specific words and pairs. Then, half the participants watched a DVD while the other half napped. When asked about their memory of the words, the nap group performed five times as well as the DVD group. 5. It can improve creativity If you haven't been feeling too imaginative lately, it's probably time to hit the hay. A study conducted by psychiatrist Sara Mednick out of the University of California, San Diego, found that people who take REM naps -- the deep sleep state where you're dreaming -- were more creative when it came to problem solving than non-REM nappers. 6. Regular naps may prevent heart disease One study of 23,000 Greek adults found that people who took midday naps -- a.k.a. "siestas" -- were over thirty percent less likely to die of heart disease. Another possibility is that it is part of the normal biological rhythm of daily living. The biological clock that drives sleep and wakefulness has two cycles each day, and one of them dips usually in the early afternoon. It's possible that not engaging in napping for some people might disrupt these processes. 7. Taking a ten minute rest is beneficial, too Don't think you can actually fall asleep? It may not matter all that much. A 2007 study, which took a look at the effects of napping versus resting, found that simply lying down for ten minutes improved mood regardless of whether or not the person fell asleep. Halloween is also a popular celebration with ties to the Celtic festival of Samhain, a celebration of the end of the harvest. The name Halloween comes from the longer name ‘All Hallow’s Eve’. In the US, this is a popular holiday for young and old and involves dressing up in costumes, harvest parties, and ‘trick or treating.’ It is celebrated every year on the 31st of October. • Dressing up in costumes dates back to the Middle Ages when poor folks would dress up and go door- to-door on Hallowmas (November 1st), receiving food in exchange for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day (November 2). • In early Celtic celebrations, turnips or other root vegetables were used in place of pumpkins. A burning lump of coal was placed inside the hollowed out vegetable and carried during the festivities. • More than 70% of Americans actively celebrate Halloween. (Source: National Retail Federation) • Halloween sales for costumes, decorations and candy were over $8 billion in 2012. (Source: National Retail Federation) • The Guinness Book of World Record holder for the heaviest pumpkin was attained in October 2011 with a pumpkin weighing in at 1,818 lbs. 5 oz.
