This event was one of the largest contests in the United States, with 249 competitors. There were over 170 bodybuilders and nearly 80 figure competitors to make this the largest Northern in its more than a quarter of a century history. The Northern is a NPC national qualifier and the top two in each class of the men’s and women’s open bodybuilding division qualify for NPC national status. In figure the top 3 in each class qualify for nationals and the top 5 for Jr USA and JR Nationals. The audience of 2200 at the evening performance fell right in step with the tone and was one of the most respectful and kindest ever experienced at a bodybuilding contest. Speaking of the audience, two giant 15’x20’ video screens made sure that there wasn’t a bad seat in the house. We’ll let the photos tell most of the story of the contest but here are some of the “behind the scenes” thoughts from the promoters, Sandy and Roger Riedinger. 1st Roger’s Random Thoughts … As the entries cascaded in I worried more and more, ‘How are we going to check all these competitors in and start on time?” The prejudging is going to take approximately five and a half hours. Another guy that really got his condition together was bantam, Scott Foster. Scott did some shows last fall and in an attempt to get a little bigger lost a little conditioning. Well, for the Northern Scott knew conditioning was king and he brought it in spades. Weighing just 137 (and when you see his photo in the contest report you’ll never believe that’s all he weighed) Scott won the bantams and finished 2nd in the overall with two first place votes. NOVICE HEAVYWEIGHT judging will run right into the evening and we are going to need some set up time. judges looking for?” I cringe. Each judge records his score independently; it’s not a consensus of the panel. Luckily, nearly two hundred weighed in on Friday, so we just had to worry about fifty Saturday morning. I still had to worry about the stragglers. Check-in time was 8:30. There are always a few who think they can come in late and it’s no problem. Well, it’s a huge problem because it holds up the entire show. There are 250 numbers that need to be assigned by class. You can’t assign numbers until the check-in is closed. As it turned out two athletes showed up too ? late and were not permitted to compete. It’s a shame, but it was stated in four places that check-in was 8:30. For the 2008 Northern all check-ins and weigh1 will?be Friday evening, just like at the ins National 2 ? shows. The scoring is done by a computer program that our old friend and NNN contributor, Dave Payne designed for us. It does it all, crosses out the two high ? and two low scores for each competitor so that any individual judging bias is eliminated, totals the remaining scores, assigns the placing, and even breaks ties. Still, I want you to imagine entering nine scores for each of the 250 athletes. That’s what Todd and Michelle Jackson did throughout Saturday afternoon. As soon as a class left the stage, Stan May collected each judge’s score sheet and took them over to Todd and Michelle. Let’s see … 250 athletes’ times nine scores each equals 2250 computer entries before the placings were determined. 3 The? prejudging ran smoothly. A lot of you don’t realize how hard it is to 4 ? judge a show of this size. Each judge is 5 ? for placing each athlete. It’s responsible not 6 just? picking the top three, but also placing every athlete from first to last 7 ? in a class. Let me tell you, getting that 8 or ?5th through 9th in the correct 4th order 9 takes ? a lot of focus and concentration. 10 ? Austin had classic lines, terrific conditioning and a great posing routine. And Bill Yates. I’ve known Bill for more than twenty-five years. I’ve seen Bill compete ? in the Mr America contest, I saw him win the over 50 at NPC Masters Nationals and I think he looked better today than I’ve ever seen him. Here’s the kicker … Bill is 65 years old!!!! Unbelievable! Talk about motivation. 3rd In posing I favor the classic style of physique presentation – if you’ve ever seen Pumping Iron you’ll know what I mean. I think Anthony Chapman was very impressive in this regard. If you like a little more entertainment with your posing you’ve got to love Vince Shirey and Sugar Ray Hammonds. On the women’s side, Rachel Ogden in the women’s lightweight was my idea of the personification of women’s bodybuilding – kind of a throw back to the days of Cory and Rachel McLish. In figure, it is very hard to pick out just one individual. I start at phase one and go all the way through to about phase 12. It takes me a full year to work on this special event. Even though it takes time to get it all ready, there are really just three reasons why I do this monster event. 1. I like to work with my Roger to create something wonderful. It gives Deborah Reboyras our brains something to work on and cohesive thought is good for the marriage. It is what we talk about along with the Beverly business. You may Amanda Teltow think we are ‘ate up’ or something…. Deborah Reboyras no and yeah. Either way it depends on Heather Mayfield the season and even if I am ate up, that’s me. Can’t help it. Would you prefer I be anything less? Women's Middleweight 1 2 3 4 Loretta Moore Amanda Teltow 4th 2. I enjoy the ride, the thrill of the planning, getting every detail nailed down. I hate to miss even one piece of the puzzle. Every year we try something new that may add a bit of class to the event. When it works, it is a treat! 3. I do it for you. This is my way to give back to the athlete population. It is a high class event where amateurs can feel like royalty. We may not serve Louis XIII cognac as a pre-show spirit, but we do give the athletes more than they expect and the audience leaves feeling like they just sat through one of the best bodybuilding and figure shows ever. I love getting the emails that tell me that it was the best day of their life. It wasn’t always a national qualifier with this many athletes and attendees. It has grown up over the years just like your children do. They start out in infant stages, small and very needy and year after year they learn lessons and become more mature. The NKY has in a sense been my baby. It is now more than half my age and may be more mature in the sense of the word than I am as a person. The NKY has grown strong, she never complains about things because she finds a way to fix them. People love her and look forward to seeing her every year. Some people even plan years in advance just to enter her doors. She has many friends. She speaks to many people and she sometimes changes their lives just like a good friend. The Northern is predictable. She always comes around the same time of the year. She keeps in touch with her friends and never lets them forget about her. She is faithful to her following. The Northern has a heart. She is alive. Her spirit lives inside us. She keeps us on track. She holds us accountable. She gives back (not just to the athlete, over the past 5 years, she has quietly donated $50,000 to the Shriner’s Children’s Burns Institute). Most of all, the Northern is a memory maker for your life. Now that she is grown up, she understands that these moments are precious. She worries about the people and wants everyone to experience something wonderful. Looking back, the Northern wouldn’t have done things any other way. Around the same time next year, you will see her come into bloom. The friends and athletes will unite and she will be happy for their time in the spotlight. All of our lives are webbed together by many different things. This show however, has glued many bonds, tightened many webs and positioned many people on the road to a better life. Roger and I promise to nurture the NKY and keep her youthful side showing as she (and we) age. Her wrinkles may be seen from time to time, but you can bet, her heart will never be filled because it just keeps expanding, ebbing and flowing into others so her spirit will live on inside us forever. So, when I say that the NKY has a life of its own, you can see now why I am so consumed by her and how she fills my heart with history and happiness.
