Young Arab Women Leaders: the Voice of the Future
Message from the AIWF Chairman
Young Arab Women Leaders – The Voice of the Future
It is my great privilege and pleasure as Chairman and on behalf of the Board
of the Arab International Women’s Forum (AIWF) to welcome you to the
seventh conference in our Young Arab Women Leaders – The Voice of the
Future series, hosted in Doha with the Qatar Business Incubation Centre as
our Host Partner and working in close cooperation with the Qatar Chamber
of Commerce, the Qatar Businesswomen Forum, with PwC and all of our
AIWF Global Partners and Institutional Partners. The AIWF Board and I all
warmly acknowledge and greatly appreciate the full and invaluable support
of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce in organising this important conference.
AIWF is proud to be hosting its first conference in Doha as part of this
initiative, following on from the success of inaugural events in Amman, Beirut
and Dubai in 2012, Palestine in 2013, and London in 2011 and 2014, every
one of these occasions being notable for their eminent guest speakers and
the participation of leading women in business and entrepreneurship, all role
models for the next generation of young Arab women leaders.
The Young Arab Women Leaders – The Voice of the Future initiative is
designed to assist young professionals like yourselves to strengthen your
business and leadership skills and optimise your contribution to society
and business. In Qatar, women have long been prominent in business
and there are many successful, motivated, talented and truly inspirational
businesswomen in the country from whom the next generation of Qatari
women leaders can draw valuable inspiration and insight. We are privileged
to have many of them here with us today.

Young Arab Women Leaders: the Voice of the Future
Continued from previous page
Our main objective today is to build a network for young business and
professional women in Qatar, uniting you all as an inspirational group of young
women participants who are all marked for future positions of leadership
within your companies, organisations and communities. We aim to bring
young Qatari women together to realise their full potential and optimise their
contribution to the development of the Qatari economy and to the economic
growth of the MENA region as a whole.
We seek to promote the role of Qatari women in making their own commercial
and economic decisions that are best for their business; to encourage Qatari
women to contribute effectively to business and entrepreneurial growth; and
to emphasise the role played by the private sector in helping Qatari women
develop their business and investment skills.
We are delighted to welcome Guest Speakers today who are all prominent
and accomplished business and professional leaders who will stimulate
discussions and help us to understand more about personal accountability,
leadership and confidence building. We especially look forward to learning
from all participants about the ways in which they personally have transformed
challenges and barriers into success stories and opportunities.
Interactive sessions will explore opportunities for collaboration between
Qatar and the international business community, looking at the role of
women business leaders in growing the national economy; the importance
of ICT skills building for women in business; and the role of social media
in mobilising awareness of women’s successes. We will also address
challenges and opportunities for our young women leaders who are breaking
gender barriers in the region in unprecedented ways, breaking through as
innovators with passion, drive, intellect and ideas and finding creative ways
of overcoming the obstacles that are holding women leaders back.
AIWF has long believed in the importance of networking and mentorship,
and the impact that strong, successful role models can have on empowering
Arab women. We believe that the Young Arab Women Leaders – The
Voice of the Future initiative can pave the way to closing the gender gap
and importantly, the leadership gap, if combined with policies to encourage
women to work and legal reforms to give them freedom of mobility, relax

restrictive regulations, encourage entrepreneurship and advance their
participation in business, the professions and public life.
Much more is planned for this initiative in 2016 and beyond as we take the
Young Arab Women Leaders programme to more Arab capitals throughout
the region, creating opportunities for young professionals to interact with
their peers and network with role models. It is only when we achieve that
all-important critical mass of women in public life, in policy making and in the
professions by helping young women leaders focus their energy and talent
that we can create an environment for business and entrepreneurship that
genuinely works for all women and a society that is truly prosperous for all
Arab citizens.
We hope that your participation in this conference will be an informative,
valuable and interactive experience for you, and we look forward to welcoming
you to future AIWF events within the Arab world and internationally.

Message from
Middle East Territory Senior Partner
PwC
For us at PwC, women are a critical talent group to enable us to continue our
growth and to build trust and help our clients address their most important
challenges. Nowhere is this truer than in the Middle East.
At PwC we seek to provide an inclusive environment for women throughout
their careers, providing them with the resources, role models, mentors and
support which contribute to their success.
Our partnership with AIWF comes from our genuine belief in the mission that
AIWF stands for. We all want to create a better future for our society and
more opportunities for our women and upcoming generations.
If we are going to nurture and develop our next generation of leaders, it’s
important to understand what makes them tick. The world is changing, our
working world is changing, and the aspirations and motivations of all our
people are changing too.
At PwC we’ve been looking at megatrends – demographic change, shifts in
economic power, technological breakthroughs, climate change and resource
scarcity and rapid urbanisation - and the impact they’re having on the world
around us. The Middle East finds itself at the epicentre of these trends that
we believe are having a massive impact on attitudes and perspectives of
women in the workplace.
In a relatively short space of time, we’ve seen a lot of social change, some
of it driven by social media. If you want an example look no further than the
role of Facebook in the revolution in Egypt a few years ago. Social media has
empowered people as never before; it has brought people together, creating
4

instant digital communities of people hungry for change and prepared to
make it happen.
Research and media tend to focus on women in leadership and on corporate
boards. However, to achieve sustainable change the public and private
sectors must change the conversation: they must also focus on developing
talented younger women now for future leadership roles. But to get this right,
organisations must better understand how to attract, develop, and retain
female millennial talent.
As part of International Women’s Day, we wanted to know, what the next
generation of female leaders want, in particular our research focused on
female millennials (the group of people born between 1982 and the early
2000’s).
We found that this generation of women are more confident than any
previous generation with 51% of female millennials confident they can rise
to the most senior levels with their current employer. So what’s important to
them? Career progression is important, as is a strong record on diversity,
equality and workforce inclusion. Work life balance is important to nearly
all female millennials, and they value flexible working hours over financial
benefits (we should stress, however, that female millennials are not alone
in valuing work life balance and flexibility; the same can be said for their
male peers.) The female millennial wants and expects regular feedback on
their job performance and despite this generation being highly tech-savvy,
when it comes to important career conversations they value face-to-face
conversations.
Our region’s females aspire to more than their counterparts did even a few
years previously. Females in our region rightly expect and are demanding a
level playing field, and those organisations that can deliver this will succeed
in our region.
We are proud to support AIWF in creating a better future for our region and
more opportunities for our women and our future generations.

Exploring Initiatives & Opportunities for Collaboration
between Women in Business : Transforming Barriers
into Opportunities
A third of internet start-ups in the MENA are run by women,
a higher percentage than in Silicon Valley, and a statistic
that comes close to the global average of 37%. Increasing
the participation of women in the economy will require a
collaborative effort between the public and private sectors.
As more women overcome obstacles to doing business
in the MENA region, an improved entrepreneurial, political
and social environment for women will follow. This session
explores challenges, prospects and success stories, drawing
from existing and proposed schemes in Qatar and throughout
the MENA region that can boost women-owned SMEs.

Opportunities and Challenges
for Young Women Leaders
With over half of the Arab world’s population under the age of
30, we see job creation, education and capacity building as
top priorities for the region. Empowering youth in emerging
economies to become entrepreneurs and job creators,
ultimately employing and developing other young people is
key to building a strong, viable and educated Arab middle
class. What are key recommendations for addressing
challenges for young women leaders in the region? How
can we promote the unprecedented opportunities that are
now available to Arab youth, opportunities that would have
been considered unthinkable only a generation ago?

Women & ICT: Skillsbuilding, Training & Trends and The Role of the Social Media
Women are increasingly taking their place in the global
economy, as employees, entrepreneurs and executives.
We are already seeing the economic impact of women’s
leadership in the MENA region, with women-owned
businesses inspiring growth and opening up new markets.
The success of our young Arab women leaders is at the
heart of future growth and prosperity for the region. In
this session, we will share perspectives on how Qatari
women entrepreneurs can leverage regional momentum
to advance rapidly in business and why technology is so
critical to the future of the Arab world.
Social media usage has skyrocketed throughout the Arab
world, with millions of Arabs using it in their daily lives, in
the way they do business, in the way they interact with
governments, brands and other people. Arab women
perceive social media as being very useful both as a
business tool and as a means of increasing women’s civic
participation in the Arab world, contributing to their political
and economic development. In this session, we explore the
exponential growth of social media use in the Arab world,
and the role of social networking sites such as Facebook
and Twitter can play in promoting and mainstreaming the
successes and challenges of Arab women entrepreneurs.

Ms Pernille Kruse Madsen
Attorney and Founder, The Human Practice Foundation Denmark
Born in 1979, I grew up in Karlebo, Denmark. In 2006,
I completed my master’s degree in law at Copenhagen
University. From 2006 to 2009, I worked as an Assistant
Attorney at Gorrissen Federspiel, a renowned Danish law
firm, while at the same time completing a Graduate Diploma in Finance at
Copenhagen Business School.
In 2011, after having worked as an Attorney at Gorrissen Federspiel and
later on in another Danish law firm, Horten, I accepted an offer to work as
Senior Legal Counsel for Maersk Drilling, a company of the Maersk Group.
Despite being very happy with my job at Maersk Drilling, I, however, decided
to resign my position in late 2012 in order to find my “true calling”.
After a year of travelling and after having returned to Denmark, I met a
group of very inspiring people with whom I founded the organisation Human
Practice Foundation. The mission of the organisation is inter alia to build and
provide access to schools for children in Eastern Nepal as well as improving
the educational level. Up until now, the organisation has been responsible for
the completion and initiation of several school projects in Nepal.
Today, I can say that I have indeed found my true calling in being the CEO of
Human Practice Foundation. Seeing the results we create and the difference
we make is truly a gift.

Young Arab Women Leaders: the Voice of the Future
A Development Organisation
Leading The Way Forward
The Arab International Women’s Forum (AIWF) has a clear aim to
support and enhance the role of women in the social and economic
development of their countries and across the Middle East region.
The Arab International Women‘s Forum (AIWF), established in 2001 as an
independent not for profit organisation, is a unique network linking Arab
women with their international counterparts and serves as the voice of Arab
women, showcasing their development, ability and competence in business,
professional and public life, creating greater global awareness of women’s
success and prospects in the Arab world.
Now in its second decade of fulfilling its mission of Building Bridges,
Building Business, the Arab International Women’s Forum has been an
agent of change for women in the Arab region, encouraging their potential
to take greater leadership roles and reach higher levels of responsibility in
all sectors of business, public life and in civil society while at the same time
contributing to the progress and prosperity of their families and communities.
AIWF has been recognised for its vision and successful achievement
of outstanding and timely initiatives with two landmark Reports and
Recommendations in 2005 and 2007 on Women as Engines of Economic
Growth in the Arab World which set the benchmark for building and
promoting its policy recommendations and strategies that have a focus
on capacity building and training, economic competitiveness, sustainable
human development and the empowerment of women, through partnership,
increased connectivity, innovation and collaboration, for women in the Arab
world. To mark the end of its first decade, AIWF widened its remit to connect
women in the Arab world with women in the other emerging economies
by launching its enhanced Programme for Building Bridges, Building
Business: Emerging Economies, Emerging Leaderships determining
that its future direction would be on continuing to strengthen its focus on

the importance of education, leadership training, capacity building and selfdevelopment for women and youth and urging governments and the private
sector to work together to achieve much needed job creation initiatives.
AIWF has received international recognition in the Arab world and internationally as a powerful advocate of women in business for the advancement
of women, and its growing role to promote and advance legislative rights
for the participation of Arab women has been distinguished by collaboration
with, among others, the League of Arab States, the European Commission
and European Parliament, United Nations organisations and agencies, the
World Bank, the MENA-OECD Investment Programme, women’s business
councils in the Arab States, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, International Chambers of Commerce and many globally recognised institutes
of higher and further education.
The Young Arab Women Leaders – The Voice of the Future initiative was
launched in 2011 by AIWF in partnership with its Global Diamond Partner
PwC, through which AIWF and PwC are committed to equipping young
women leaders with the skills to start, grow and lead successful businesses,
increasing access to technical and professional education and strengthening
links between women in the UK and the MENA. An inaugural Conference was
held in the City of London in 2011 and thereafter, AIWF and PwC extended
their joint initiative to the Arab region and outstanding events have been held
in Amman, Jordan; Beirut, Lebanon; Dubai, United Arab Emirates and in
Birzeit, Palestine, prior to returning again to the City of London in 2014. All
of these events have provided a platform for young aspiring Arab women to
support, engage and network with mentors in political, economic and social
leadership roles in the Arab world. The seventh Conference of the Young
Arab Women Leaders series will be held in Doha, Qatar in November 2015.
AIWF could not have made the impact it has over the last decade without
the support of its Global Partners: PepsiCo, Pfizer Inc, Shell, Willis, Sharjah
Business Women Council, PwC, Jumeirah and Sungjoo Foundation, all
of whom are committed to strong inclusiveness and diversity policies and
developing and training women. Also of great importance to the work of
AIWF are the MoU partnerships with the Arab-British Chamber of Commerce,
the Hawkamah Institute for Corporate Governance, the Mudara Institute

of Directors, the Pearl Initiative, the Dubai Business Women Council and
Memac Ogilvy. In raising awareness and strengthening its connections with
global media, from June 2007 AIWF has enjoyed a continuing relationship
with the Financial Times (FT) which has culminated in four FT special reports
on Arab women in business. AIWF supported the publication of Domains of
Influence: Arab Women Business Leaders in a New Economy, which is a
unique testament to the impact of Arab Women in today’s global environment
of entrepreneurship and economic empowerment and which was shortlisted
for the fourth prestigious Prix Pictet.
In 2015, AIWF is pleased to partner with the International Bar Association
Legal Practice Division (IBA/LPD) Initiative for Women Business Lawyers
and the Arab Women’s Legal Network to embark on a new key initiative to
assist women in commercial law in the Arab region, commencing with a joint
event in Amman, Jordan in September.
Supported fully by its powerful network of global partners, the Arab
International Women’s Forum continues to build on the commitment made
at the end of its first decade to work towards sustainable empowerment for
women and youth and to champion a concerted drive at the highest levels
to advance gender equality in the Arab world. Promoting an enhanced role
for Arab women in their economies and their communities will contribute
towards the sustainable development and prosperity in the Arab world to
which every citizen aspires and truly achieve progress for all.

Young Arab Women Leaders: the Voice of the Future
Qatar Chamber of Commerce & Industry is one of the oldest chambers
in the GCC. Designed to support the burgeoning business climate in the
country, the chamber was a governmental body until 1990 when it was
granted its own autonomy with the legal authority to represent all the private
sector’s activities in the State of Qatar. By providing key support services,
networking opportunities and leadership, the Chamber has helped oversee
one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing economies in the world. As
the sole chamber in Qatar, QCCI utilizes its well-established connections in
the region and beyond to promote free and expanded trade and create new
business opportunities
