FOREWORD
This shop manual supplement, when used with the 1961 shop
manual and the 1962-63 shop manual supplement, provides
the Service Technician with complete information for the
proper servicing of the 1964 850-1100 Series Trucks.
All testing, adjustment and repair procedures that are new
for 1964, as well as specifications, maintenance information
and recommended specials tools, are included in this manual.
The descriptions and specifications in this manual were in
effect at the time this manual was approved for printing. The
Ford Motor Company reserves the right to discontinue models

COMPRESSOR
GOVERNOR
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
The governor (F ig. I) . operating
in conjunctio n with the compressor
unloadin g mechanism, automatically
controls the ai r pressu re in the air
brake or air suppl y system between
the desired , predetermi ned maximum
and minimum pressures. The compressor run s cont inu all y wh ile the
engi ne run s, but the ac tual compression of air is controlled by the govern or which stops or Slart s compression when th e max imum or minimum reservoir press ures are reac hed.
The D-2 governor ha s a piston upon
which air press ure acts to overcome
th e pressure se tting sprin g and con-
trol the inlet and ex haust val ve to
either ad mit or exhaust air to o r
fr om the compresso r unloading
mechanism.
Con necti ons in this system are to
the rese rvo ir and comp ressor unloading ports. There also is an exhaust
port.
Reservo ir air pressure en ters the
D-2 governor at one of its reservoir
ports and act s on the area of the
pistoll and benea th the inl et and exhaust va lve. As the a ir press ure
builds up, the piston moves aga inst
the res istance of the pressure setting
sprin g. The piston and inl et and exhaust valve move up when the reservo ir air pressure reaches the cuto ut setti ng of th e governo r.
The exhaust stem seats on the
inlet and exhaust va lve and then the
inl et passage opens. Reservoi r air
pressure the n flows by the open
inl et valve, throu gh th e passage in
the piston) and out the un loadcr port

As th e system reservoir a ir pressure drops to the cut-in settin g of the
governor, the fo rce exe rt ed by the ai r
p ressu re o n th e piston is reduced so
th at the press ure settin g spring moves
the piston do wn. The inlet va lve
closes and the ex haust opens. With
th e ex hau st ope n, the air in the unloader lin e escapes back through the
piston, through the ex haust ste m and
out the ex hau st port.
TWO-CYLINDER BRAKE

REMOVAL
1. Ra ise th e tru ck unt il the wheels
clea r the floor. Remove the wheel,
and then remove the drum or the
hub a nd drum assembly. Mark the
hub and drum to aid assembly in
the sa m e position.
On a truck equipped with a vacuum or air booster, be sure the enginc is stollp ed and there is no
vacuum or ai r pressure in the systcm bcforc disconnecting the hydrauli c lines.
2. Remove bot h brake shoe return
spr ings, (Fig. 2) using brake sp ring
pliers.
3. Rem ove the C-washer and th e
flat washer fro m the adj usting ca m
and ho ld down stud. Li ft the shoes
off th e backi ng pl ate.
INSTALLATION
1. Install the an ti-rattle spring
washer o n each ca m and shoe guide
stud , wi th the p ronged side fac in g
the ad justin g ca m.
2. Place a shoe assembl y on the
backing plate with the cam a nd shoe
gui de stud inse rted through the hole
in th e shoe web. Loca te th e shoe toe
in th e wheel cy lin de r piston shoe
guide and positi o n the shoe heel in
the slot in th e anchor block.
3. Install th e na t washer and the
C-was her o n the ca m and shoe guide
stud . C rimp th e end s of C-washer
together.
4. After installin g both shoes, install the brnke shoe return sp rin gs
( Fi g. 2). To ins tall eac h spring, place
th e sp rin g end with th e short hook in
the toe of the shoe; then, usin g brake
spring pliers. streich the sp ri ng and
sec ure the lo ng hook end in the heel
of th e opposi te shoe.

The brak in g system cons ists of the
foot co ntrol va lve, the fo ur brake
chambers and slack adj usters, and
two quick releasing valves. Th e d istance the brake treadle is depressed
regulates th e amount of compressed
ai r delivered by the foot co ntrol valve
to the brake ch ambers. The amount
of air, in turn, determines the braking force applied by the slack adjusters to the shoes. The design of
the foot control va lve has been
slightl y chan ged for 1964 (Fig. 3).

the reservo ir pressure ports a nd the
brake chamber ports.

valve body. The exhaust valve remains closed, however, because the
mechan ical pressure at the treadle
hold s the piston (seat) down against
the va lve. With both valves closed
no more air ca n e nt e r a nd the air
already admitted can not escape.
The va lve is thu s in ba lanced posit ion.
If the trea dl e is depressed further,
m echa ni ca l pressure overcom es a ir
pressure in the cavity beneath the piston opening the inl et valve agai n.
This permits morc reservo ir a ir to
e nte r until th e press ure below th e
pisto n equa ls the m echa nica l presSllre above and the inlet valve closes
agai n. Complete depress ion of the
treadle releases full reservoir pressu re to t he brake chambers.
RELEASED POSITION
If the treadl e is pa rti a ll y released,
a ir pressu re beneat h th e piston overcomes the mechanical pressure
above, raising th e piston and the
inl et-exhaust va lve assembly. This
action closes th e intake valve a nd
open s th e ex haust va lve allowin g air
press ure from the brake chambers
a nd lines to be re leased th rough the
exhaus t porL T he a ir continues to
exhaus t until ai r pressure be low the
piston eq ua ls the mec hanical pressure
abovc. The foot control valve is
again in ba la nced position. If th e
treadl e is a ll owed to return to th e
fully released position , the ex haust
va lve rem a in s open to exhaust all ai r
from th e c ha mbe rs and f ully rel ease
the b rakes.

DESCRIPTION AND
OPERATION
T he new
Rockwell
Standard
(Timk en) shift unit consist s of a n
electric motor, a worm sha ft a nd
wheel , an eccen"l ric, and a co nnecting rod (Fig. I).

The elec tri c m otor drives the worm
shaft , wheel and eccentric (Fig. I ).
The co nnectin g rod connects th e
eccentric to the sh ift sha ft wh ich

operates the push rod and shift collar (Fig. II).
REMOVAL AND
INSTALLATION
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the wires from the
termin als on the shift unit cover.
2. Remove the retaining screws
and filler plug from the cover.
3. Turn a threaded tool into the
filler plug hole as shown in Fig. 2,
and pull the cover from the housin g.
Th e tool can be made by welding a
Vs x 27 pipe plug to the end of a
T-handle.
To change the position of the
shift shaft, turn on the jgnition. Shift
the unit to the desired position by
touching the hot lead of the electric
harness to the appropriate terminal
on the shift unit cover. It is not
necessary ·to attach the cover to the
housing.
5. Remove the nuts and lock
washers from the mounting studs,
and remove the shi ft unit from the
carrier (Fig. 5). Do not damage the
oil seal in the flange.
INSTALLATION
1. If a new shift unit is being installed, remove the cover from the
housing with the tool shown in Fig.
2 as described in step 3 under "Removal".
2. Insta ll a new shift unit housing
to sleeve gasket, and position the
shift unit over the mounting studs
(Fig. 5). Do not damage the oil
seal that is installed in the flange
section of the shift unit housing.
3. As the shift unit is moved into
place, move the eccentric connecting
rod into the slot in the end of the
shift shaft (Fig. 6). Install the lock
washers and mounting stud nuts, and
torque to specification s.

sh ift motor (Fig. 8). Install a new
motor, and shift the uni t to the desired position.

4. Drive the roll pin from the shift
shaft and eccentric connecting rod as
shown in Fig. 3. The tool shown in
Fig. 3 has a -va -inch body and a
%2-inch nose section.

worm shaft as shown in the insert
of Fig. 4, it will be necessary to
change the position of the shift
shaft before the pin can be driven
out.

In case a new motor is not available, use a slotted tool that fits
over the tang of the worm shaft and
turn it until the shift shaft changes
position (Fig. 4).
4. Align the hole in the connecting
rod with the hole in the shift shaft,
and drive the roll pin into place with
a suitable driver as shown in Fig. 7.
The driver shown ha s a hole in one
end, o/ta-inch diameter by ~ -inch
deep, to hold the pin at the beginning.
5. When installing the shift unit
cover, the shift unit and axle assembly must be in the neutral
position to avoid damaging the
switches. Install the gasket and
cover, and secure with retaining
screws.
6. Fill the unit to the bottom of
the filler hole with SAE 10 engine
oil. I nsta ll the filler plu g.
7. Con nec t the wires from the
electric harness to the terminals on
the outside of the shift unit cover.

vise and driving out the shaft.
5. Remove the worm wheel and
eccentric assembly from the housing.
While holding the assembly in a vise,
remove the cap screws and lock
was hers and drive the eccentric shaft
ou t of th e assembl y (Fig. 10 ).

MAJOR REPAIR OPERATIONS
DISASSEMBLY

4. Disassemble the worm shaft, if
necessary. The spring retainer a l the
bottom of the shaft is pressed on. It
spring wa shers, and thrust washer to
the worm shaft and press on th e
lower spring retai ner .(Fig. 11). Position the wo rm shaft assembly in the
sh ift housing.
2. Position the gasket, and insta ll
the shift motor to the shift housing
so that the slo t in the motor shaft
fits over the tang of the worm shaft
(Fig. 8).
3. In stall the two star washers and
stud nut s th at hold the motor to the
housing.
4. Place the ba ll bearing in the
recess of the adjusti ng screw, and
turn in the adjusti ng screw until the
ball bear in g is snug against the end
of th e worm shaft assembly (Fig.
12) . Back off th e adjusting screw VB
turn for proper adjustment.
5. Hold th e adj ustin g screw in
place, and tighten the lock nut to
sec ure the adjus tment. Check to see
that the worm shaft turns freely by
ha nd.
6. Posit io n the worm whee l at the
in ne r side of the ecce ntric. Place the
connect in g rod and cover on the
outer side (Fig. I I). Whi le holding
th ese co mpon ent s in a vise, fasten
them together by driv in g the eccentric shaft through the assembly ( F ig.
10). The shaft should protrude an
equal distance from each side of the
assembly. Insla ll th e cap screws and
lock washers.
7. Install the eccentr ic and worm
wheel assemb ly in the shi ft hou sing.
8. Connect the malar wires to the
terminals o n the in side face of the
shift cover. Attach the red wire to
th e termi nal nearest to the flange of
the shi ft unit.

(2) When the tes t lamp is connected to the speedometer adapter
lead wire (terminal "e") . the lamp
should light in the high range or
"HI" position an d intermediate range
or "INT" position. The lamp should
go out with the control switch in the
"LO" (low range) position.
(3) When the test lamp is connected to the so lenoid va lve lead
wire (terminal "E"), the lamp should
light in the intermediate range or
"INT" position and high range or
" HI" position of the control switch.
The lamp should go out when the
control switch is in the "LO"
pos ition.
(4) When th e test lamp is connected to the so leno id valve lead
wire (terminal "F"), the lamp should
light in the high ran ge or "Hl"
position of the control sw itch. The
lamp should go out when the control
switch is in the <lINT" position or
"LD" position of the control switch.
(S) If the test indications are correct in the above tests, current supply
is correct to the speedo meter adapters and the solenoid valves.
(6) If the lamp does not light correctly, the trouble may be a short
circuit in the wiring harness or the
control switch, o r a wire in a harness
may be broken.
SOLENOID VALVES
OPERATION CHECK
One solenoid valve is energized
to supply air to the shift units in the
intermediate ("INT") and high
(" HI") range while the other solenoid valve is energ ized to supply
air to the shift unit in the high
("HI") range only. ]n units with an
electric lockout, a third solenoid
val ve operates the lockout on the
power di vider. Each valve must have
a good ground connection to the
vehicle frame to opera te satisfactorily. Before co ndemn ing a solenoid
valve operation, make certain that
the ground connection is satisfactory.
1. To check the solenoid valve
operation, d isconnect the lead wires
at terminals "E", "F" and "G", and
the air lines leading to the respective
shift unit.
2. Install an air pressure ga uge in
th e air line opening in the solenoid
valve.
3. Apply a power supply (vehicle
voltage) to the solenoid valve terminal and observe the pressure gauge
reading. The operat ing pressure
should approximate the reservoir
pressure. If the gauge indicates
approximate reservoir pressure, the
solenoid valve operation is satisfactory. If the gauge indicates low or no
pressure, the solenoid va lve is faulty.
AIR-TORSION SPRING SHIFT
UNIT OPERATION CHECK
If the electrical system is satisfactory and the axle does not shift
satisfactorily, the troub le may be
caused by a faulty air-torsion spring
shift unit. Disassemble and repair a
faulty shift unit.
SPEEDOMETER ADAPTER
OPERATION CHECK
Two speedometer ada pters are
mounted together with one adapter
bein g energized in th e hi gh axle
range only while the other is energized in the intermediate axle range
and high axle range. The adapters
are grounded through the speedom-
eter mounting or the speedometer
cable and cable housin g. Before condemning speedometer adapter operatio n, make certain th at the ground
co nn ec ti on is satisfactory.
1. To test the speedometer adapter
circuit with a test lamp, first disconnect the lead wire at termin al "B".
It is ass um ed that the term ina l "B"
lead wire con nects to th e black wire
leadin g to th e rear rear axle solenoid
valve.
2. Co nnect the test lamp to the
terminal "B" lead wire and ground
on the vehicle frame.
3. T urn the ignition sw itch on and
observe the test lamp operation. The
test lamp shou ld light in the hi gh
range or " HI" pOS itIOn of the
control swi tch. The lamp should go
out when the control switch is
placed in the "INT" or "LO" position.
4. To test the other speedometer
adapter circuit with a test lamp, disconnect th e lead wire at terminal
"C". It is assumed that the terminal
"C" lead wire connects to the red
wire leading to the forward rear axle
solenoid va lve.
S. Co nnect the test lamp to the
termin al "C" lead wire and grou nd
on the vehicle frame.
6. Turn the ignition sw itch on and
o bse rve the test lamp operation. The
test lamp shou ld li ght in the intermed iate range or "INT" position and
hi gh range or " HI" position of the
control switch. The lamp should go
out when the control switch is placed
in the " LO" position.
If the lamp indications are correct, current supply to adap ters is
correc t. If the lamp indications are
correct and the axle shifts normall y,
but the speedometer does not operate
properly, repl ace the fa ulty adapter.
If the test lamp indications arc not
correc t, the trouble is in the wiring
harness or control switch.
LOW PRESSURE SWITCH
OPERATION CHECK
(WITHOUT ELECTRIC
LOCKOUT)
The low pressure switch opens the
air shift system electrical circuit when
the inter-axle lockout is engaged. Befo re condemning the low pressure
switch operation , make certain the
connections are sa tisfactory.
1. To test the low pressure sw itch,
place the control sw itch in the " HI"
position or high ax le range.
2. Turn on the ignition sw itch,
then engage the inter-axle differential lockout. Air should bleed from
the shift system and the axles should

shift to low ran ge.
3. If this does not occur, c heck the
low pressure sw itch circu it with a
test lamp as follows:
(a) Disco nnect the lead wire at
terminal "D", Connect the test lamp
to terminal " D" and groun d it on the
ve hicle frame. Turn o n the ignit ion
swi tch . Place the lockout valve in the
e ngaged and disen gaged positions,
and observe the test lamp operation.
(b) In the disengaged pos ition,
the test lamp should li ght. If th e
lamp does not light, check for a poor
electr ical connection or a broken
lead wire. If the wire and con nec tion
a re sat isfa ctory, the low pressure
sw itch is faulty.
(c) In the engaged position, the
test lamp sho uld not li ght. If the
lamp li ghts, the low press ure swi tch
is faulty.
ELECTRICAL SWITCH CHECK
(AT SHIFT UNIT)
T his electri c sw itch opens in " HI "
and "INT" and closes in the "La "
positio n of the control swi tc h.
1. To check the swi tch , disconnect
the lead wire at terminal " H".
2. Connect the test lamp to te rmina l " H " and ground.
3. C lose the manual e lectric lockout sw itch and opera te the control
sw itch in a ll posit ions. The test la mp
should light in the " LO" position
and should not light in the " HI " and
" INT" positions. Rep lace a faulty
sw itch.

DESCRIPTION
The Eaton Three-S peed Ta ndem
Drive Axle consists of two planetarytype, two-speed axle units, coupled
with a power divider and an interaxle differential.
One control sw itch, mount ed on
the gear shift lever, effects the speed
changes. This manuall y - operated
sw itc h control s operation of a n airtorsion spring shift system, which, in
turn, shifts the axles from one ratio
to the next.
push rod on each unit , which , in turn,
move the spring winding levers. The
spring winding leve rs increase th e
load placed on the torsion springs.
When this occ urs, th e axles are ready
to shift to high range. When torque
on the gears is relieved by closing
a nd opening the thrott le, or declu tchin g, the shift is co mpl eted.
Interm ediate Range. When the control switch is moved to the " INT"
position or th e intermediate range,
the soleno id va lve shut s off the air
supply to the rear·rear axlc shift unit ,
a nd the solenoid valve for the forward-rear axle remains open, all owin g the forw a rd ax le shift unit to rela in its ai r. Thus, when torque on
the gea rs is relieved by closing and
opening the throttle , or declutching,
the rear-rear axle is shifted to low
ran ge and the forward -rcar ax le rcmains in high range and the shi ft is
now completed to in termediate.
Low Range. When th e control
sw itch is moved to " La" pos ition ,
or low range, both solen oid va lves
shut ofT the a ir suppl y. Air pressure
in the air-torsion sp ring sh ift uni ts
bleeds back through th e solenoid
va lves and air lines. Pressure on the
diaphragm is released. The push
rod moves toward the diaph ragm
and moves the spring wi nd ing leve r.
Additional load is placed o n the
to rsion spri ng prov id ing a cond ition
ready fo r the axle to sh ift to the low
ran ge. When torque on the gears is
relieved by closing and opening the
throttl e, or declut c hing, the shift to
low range is completed.
OPERATION-COMPONENTS
Co ntrol Switch. T he con trol sw itch
is a three-pos ition switch (Fig. 14 )
mounted o n the gear shift lever and
is manually ope rated by th e driver.
OPERATION-SYSTEM
High Range. When the co nt rol switch
is moved to the "H I" position or the
high axle range, cu rren t to the two
sole noid va lves allows air to pass from
its supply through the va lves and be
applied to the air sh ift diaphragm on
both the forwa rd and the rear-rear
driving ax les.

Speedometer Adaptors. Two spee dometer adapters are mounted in the
system a nd compensate for drive
shaft speed variations be tween low,
intermedi ate and high speed ax le
range. I n low range, the adapters are
not energized. In intermediate range,
o ne adap ter is energized to a 1 : 1
ratio while the oth er adapter is not
energized. In high range both adap ters a re ene rgized to a 1: 1 ratio.
This arrangement is accomplished by
connecting each adapter in parall el
to one of each of the two solenoid
valves in the system .
For sys tems th at use the front
wheel drive speedometer, the above
mention ed speedometer adapters are
not required in the electrical system.
Wiring Harness and Circuit
Break e r . The elec tr ica l wiring in the
system is a completely assembled
unit including a circuit breaker. Individua l wi res in th e harness a re identified by various co lors (Fig. 13).
The circuit breaker is connected to
the wire leading from the power
sou rce. If a short circuit occurs, the
circ uit breaker will open and cut
off the electrical current to the
system .
Solenoid Valves. Two solenoid
valves prov id e the link between the
electrica l cont rol syste m and the airtorsion sprin g shift units. Wh en the
solenoids a rc energized, air is allowed
to travel to the ai r shift units and
thu s shift the ax les. When the solenoid valves a re de-energized , by
move ment of the control switch, th e
ai r pressure supply is shut off allowing the air-torsion spring sh ift un its
to bleed ai r through th e solenoid
valve exhaust port. In units with an
electric lockou t, an add itional solenoid valve co ntrol s the air pressure
supply to operate the lockou t unit
mounted on the power divider.
Lockout with Low Pressure Switch.
A low pressure switch is inclu ded in
the shi ft system. Thi s sw itch is
mounted in the loc kout valve and
prevents th e use of the inter-axle
differential lockout except when the
ax les are in low ratio. When the lockout is e ngaged, thi s sw itch immediately all ows th e axles to go to low
ratio , no m atter what range they
were in prev iously. With the lockout
engaged, the axles cannot be sh ifted.

Lockout with Electric Switches.
The electric type lockout consists of
two electric switches and a solenoid
valve (Fig. 13). One switch is located in the vehicle cab and the other
is mounted on the forward-rea r axle
shift unit. This type system permits
the lockout to engage in low range
only. When the shift unit is in intermediate and' high range position, the
electric switch at the shi ft unit is
open. This prevents completion of
the electrical circuit to the lockout
solenoid va lve.
SOLENOID VALVE
Replace the sole noid va lve as an
assembl y. The valve should not be
serviced.
LOW PRESSURE SWITCH
REPAIR (WITHOUT ELECTRIC
LOCKOUT)
Replace the low pressure switch as
an assembly. The switch is a sealed
unit and can not be serviced.
Air-Torsion Spring Shift U nit. The
air-torsion spring shift unit is mechanically connec ted to the axle shift
fork and sh ifts th e ax le. This unit
includes an air chamber and a torsion spring dri ve assembly. A diaphragm, operated by air pressure,
moves a push rod. The end of the
push rod connects to a spring wind ing lever. This lever is part of the
torsion spring drive assembly, which
acts to · move the shift fo rk and
change the axle range.

The following procedure sho uld be
used to iso la te the particul ar part or
parts causin g the problem when a
vib rati on condi tio n ex ists which is

components:
1. Road test the truck to de term ine
the c rit ical vib rati on po ints. Note
road speed, engine rpm, and shift
lever pos iti ons at which the vibration
occu rs.
2. Stop the truck and run the engine wit h th e c lutc h depressed
through th e c ritica l speed ra nge s
noted above. IF excess ive vibra ti on is
presc nt, cor rect the engine or c lutch
cond iti on ca usi ng the prob lem. If the
problem is no t present , co ntinue the
diagnos is.
3. With the main tra nsmission in
neu tra l and th e clutc h engaged, run
the e ngine throu gh the critical speed
ra nges and note if any excessive
vibrat ion is appa re nt. If a probl em is
foun d to ex ist, c heck the transmission to clutch housing alignment and
th e c lu tc h asse mbly for th e ca use of
the problem.
4. C heck th e aux iliary tran smi ssio n mo unts. Pay partic ul ar a tt ent ion
to th e prope r loca ti on of the in sll lators a nd spacers, a nd th e installation of the forward tru nni on on the
trans miss ion easc. If these parts are
found nol to be to specification , correc t them a nd aga in ru n the engine
thro ugh the c riti ca l speed ra nges to
determ ine if the vibratio n st ill ex ists.
If the vibrat ion is still present , check
th e fl ange ~ln g l es of the ma in a nd
au xi li ary tra nsm issio n a nd the coupling shaft. If these asse mbl ies are
not to specifica tio n, rewo rk as necessary to obtain the required driveli ne
angles.
5. C heck fo r vibration by driving
the main tran smission and coup li ng
shaft, keeping the aux il iary tra nsm is-

sion in neu trai. If excess ive vibration
is present, correct t ra nsmi ssion alignment as necessary. I[ the prob lem is
not prese nt , cont inue the diagnosis.
6. Discon nect th e inter-axle drive
shaft. Engage the inte r-axle lockout
swilCh and then dri ve the engine and
the dri ve lin e throu gh the critical
speed ranges. If vibrati o n is present,
the drive line forwa rd of the bogie
is at fault. If vibratio n is not appare nt , t he bog ie drive li ne, its V-j oints,
and /o r fl a nge angles may be the
ca use of th e prob lem . If the bogie
drive line is at fau lt , c hec k for the
proper c ross me m ber loca ti on.
Avoid excessive operation with
the inter-axle shaft locked out to
preve nt dam age to the power divider.
7. Re move the main drive shaft
a nd th en dr ive the e ngine, the
main , a nd the aux ilia ry tra nsmissions
through the c riti ca l speed ra nges. If
vibrat io n is not prese nt , the prob lem
is caused by the main dr ive shaft or
impro pe r drive lin e a ngles between
th e auxiliary tra nsmissio n (or main
transm iss ion if no auxiliary transmi ss io n is use d ) and the forward
rear ax le fl ange. To correct th is,
c heek the fl a nge a ngles, th e U-;oints,

A T-Series truck equipped with an
auxiliary transmission ha s a transmission to auxiliary tran smiss ion universa l joint ( Fig. 2) to transmit the
power from the conventional transmiss ion to the auxi li ar y transmission.
This assembly consists of two cIosecoup led universa l joints. The assembly may be replaced without removing either of the transmissions from
the truck.
In the multiple shaft drive line installation, the sli p joint is located in
the drive shaft, or in the coupling
shaft. Drive shafts and coupling
shafts are balanced ; therefore, if the
truck is to be undercoat ed, cover the
drive shaft to prevent getting undercoat ing mater ial on the shaft.
All universal joints are of the
needle bearing type. The universal
joint bearings are retained on the
universal joint spiders by bearing
caps and bolts.
If the problem ca nnot be isolated to
a particular drive sha ft, or if all drive
line angles are to be checked, usc
a spirt level Inotractor and adjust
the alignment as detailed on page 20.
DESCRIPTION AND
OPERATION
The drive line is composed of the
un iversal joints, connecting shafts,
and the attaching fl anges. The numbe r of shafts and un iversal joints
used depends on the truck wheelbase.
The shorter wheelbase trucks use
o nly the drive shaft portion of the
drive lines and have a short sliding
spline-type drive shaft with Mechanic type flanges .
The longer wheelbase trucks are
equ ipped with one or more coupling
shafts, which extend fro m the transmission to rubber-bushed center support bearin gs, and a drive shaft
which extends from the center support to the rear axle (Fig. 1).

1. Bend the tangs of the lock
plates away from the ca p screws.
2. Remove the cap screws which
attach the bearing caps to the universal join t flan ge and yoke. Remove
the bearing caps and bear in gs from
the spider.

2. After the universal joint assembly has been removed from the truck,
separate the two universal joints by
loosen ing and removing the dUst cap,
washers, and sea l from the U-joint
knuckles. Pull the assemblies apart.
3. Remove the beari ng caps and
spide rs from their respective yokes.
4. C lean and inspect the spiders,
bearings, and shields. Replace with

1. To replace the transmiss ion to
REPLACEMENT
All the truck universa l joint sp iders
and sliding splines are equipped with
lubrication fittings. These spiders and
splines should be lubricated periodically.
The center suppo rt bearings are
pre-lubricated and sealed for the life
of the bearing.

3. Remove the grease sea ls, and
retainers, from the spider.
4. To install, pack the recess in the
sp ider with the recommended lubricant.
5. InstalJ the grease seaJs OJ) tbe
spider.
6. Position the needle bearings in
the bearing caps, then position the
caps on the spider. Place the spider
on the yokes, and then in stall the
bearing cap locks .
7. Secure the locks to the yokes
with the cap screws. Bend the tangs
of the locks up aga inst the cap screw
heads.
