The programs offer a wide range of activities to choose from: sports, group games, technology instruction, enrichment, tutoring, dramatic play, arts and crafts, special projects, reading, board games, and theme-based shortand long-term projects. Through a remarkable partnership with City Schools of Decatur, CYS (Children and Youth Services) links the city’s goals for developing active lifestyles with the school system’s goals for developing 21st century skills. Program offerings promote the development of creativity, critical thinking, communication and teamwork, technology competence, independence, responsibility, leadership, and social skills. Technology staff, school system staff, after-school site directors and counselors, CYS administrators, tutors, academic building coordinators and our enrichment coordinator work together to identify weekly learning targets linked to each theme. To meet the goals the after-school programs offer technology curriculum activities designed by school system staff, cultural enrichment activities led by artist instructors, and small-group tutoring sessions taught by certified teachers. The programs also promote over- all health and wellness through nutrition lessons, food projects, and physical activity. New themes each month culminate with a showcase, celebration or presentation to share ongoing projects and highlight what participants have learned. Monthly themes include friendship, goal setting, social skills, personal growth, global awareness, careers, creativity and self-expression, community, healthy foods and fitness, and physical activity. Each enrichment session culminates with a showcase for parents and families. Mark your calendar for our Family Dance, Nov. 4, and the annual After School Celebration on March 27. All families of enrolled children are welcome to attend these events. We look forward to another exciting, enriching, engaging year of after-school activities in Decatur. Let’s go for the goals! T he Metro Atlanta RSVP Volunteer Program, sponsored by the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Area Agency on Aging, is recruiting volunteers over 50 for the CATCH Healthy Habits Program. The program aims to combat childhood obesity by engaging older adults to mentor children in grades K-5 and help them learn healthy habits for a lifetime. It offers an innovative way to make a difference in the life of a child and in your community – and improve your health at the same time. Fall sessions will be held in conjunction with the Whiz Kids after-school program at the new 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue in Oakhurst. Class sessions will encourage healthy behavior, wiser food choices, and increased physical activity to benefit both the children and adult volunteers enrolled in the CATCH program. To volunteer or learn more about the CATCH Healthy Habits Program, contact Mary Newton, program coordinator, 404-463-4554 ([email protected]). Introducing . . .
