D
ave Alvin got so excited about playing
the AimLoan.com San Diego Blues
Festival that he went out and created a
band. Better known as a roots rocker, folkie and
country musician, Alvin’s first passion was the
blues and it has always been at the base of his
music. He decided that on Sept. 7, he’d have a
never-before blues band with him. That means
former Blaster buddies John Bazz and Bill
Bateman will be there, as will slide-guitarist
Chris….. and harmonica player Jack Rudy.
“Dave’s really excited to be playing this festival,”
says his manager Nancy Sefton. “You can tell
he’s taking it very seriously.”
Dave Alvin’s Downey Blues All-Stars, Charlie Musselwhite, Lucky Peterson, Eden
Brent, Billy Boy Arnold & Jody Williams and Nikki Hill will play, along with the Bill
Magee Blues Band, Billy Watson & His Submarine Trio, The Fremonts and San Diego’s
soul-funksters, The Tighten Ups.
Admission is $15 with a donation of two cans of food. VIP tickets are on sale for $100.
All proceeds benefit The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.
The third annual event at Embarcadero Marina Park North opens with Billy Watson’s
crew playing outside the front gate at 9:30 am. Gates open at 10:30 and music will
continue until 8 p.m.
For tickets and additional details, please visit www.sdbluesfest.com.
The International Blues Challenge Is Back!
It’s time for bands to enter the 2014 regional IBC. See information about special discount.
T
ime for San Diego bands to start thinking about entering BLUSD's regional
competition, tentatively scheduled for Sept. 28th, Oct. 5th and Oct. 12th.
The IBC will be held in Memphis Jan. 21-25, 2014, bringing bands from the far
corners of the globe to compete for widespread recognition. When Zac Harmon won, he
said it was like spending $100,000 on publicity. San Diego has done well at IBC in recent
years, with Nathan James & Ben Hernandez, Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz, and Sue Palmer bringing
home honors.
Entry forms can be obtained by sending an email to [email protected], with IBC in the
subject line. Entry fees are discounted for BLUSD member bands and those who enter
before Sept. 1. The winning band receives $900 per member to offset travel expenses. So
start rehearsing and we hope to hear from you soon!

Blues Summit 2
Hennessey’s Aug 18
T
his will be the biggest gathering of Blues Musicians and
Entertainers this year in San Diego. We come together in the
name of the BLUES .. This will be a day to remember !
Hosted by Stoney B Blues and Michele Lundeen at Hennessey's
(708 4th Ave.) from 6-11pm. That’s five solid hours of some of the
best blues we have to offer! No cover, good food and drinks.
T
he Kona Kai will feature a Labor Day Blues Festival on
the beach August 31, 2013 starting at 4 pm. Performing
will be the Stoney “B” Blues Band, Mercedes Moore, Gino
Matteo & Jade and the Dennis Jones Band. Cover is $10 cover.
W
ell the jam gets better and better every week!!
Thanks to BLUSD volunteers Lori Murray and Barb
Kabes we have a great gig table. It has plenty of room to
put everything that they have to present without crowding. The
table, banner and T's are very visible to all in the Voodoo Lounge
and those coming in and out of the club and in the dining room.
We have a great spot. The gals are doing a great job. They have
been there four times. I am so grateful to them and all that they
have done to get the table rolling.
BLUSDs' presence is very strong and getting stronger. Our
presence on Facebook is getting stronger now that we have video
and photos starting to emerge. I am on the mic, I introduce the gals
a couple of times a night, point folks to the table, speak of BITS,
IBC, the homeless youth program, support of our local bands,
education and camp. Several of these subjects are more than
mentioned by myself or Doyle every week between sets and
sometimes songs. Bands are encouraged to join, as well as
individual musicians.
The jams are well attended averaging 75 plus people both local
and from out of town. Three of the jams had over 150 to 200
people... Balls to the walls, standing room only, in attendance, all
night long. We average 25 musicians a week that come to play,
mostly A list pros. Some of them are world class, our A list locals,
or those traveling through town. We’ve had bands come in from
out of town to play. One of them heard through their society in the
State of Washington about the jam. We had a band come in from
AZ who heard about the jam through the HOB website. When I
talked to their leader on the phone he said that it was wonderful
that we have a society that is so openly supportive of the locals.
We have also had three of our member bands host the jam.

T
his year's Blues Music Summer Camp was a great
success. With 15 Campers and a staff stocked full of
outstanding professional musicians, together we
created a great week.
Along with pro-counselors Jimmy Woodard and John
January (guitar instructors), Ric Lee (drums), Michele
Lundeen (vocals/performance), Fuzzy Rankins
(keyboards and concert production) and Danny Perez
(bass guitar), we had special guests Stoney B & Wyatt
Lowe and Robin Henkel and Bill Magee do special
presentations. We also had one of our Camp alumni,
Zane Rodgers, as an extremely helpful intern all week.
The finale concert opened with Wyatt Lowe & The
Youngbloods which featured Camp alumni Wyatt and
drummer Jackson Blinn along with bassist Conner
Patlan. They made us proud! It was bittersweet as we
found out that the Lowe’s were relocating soon.
This year, as something different, each “class” showcased
their instruments in their own feature down to the vocalists
doing an A Capella number. Another highlight was when one
student brought his competition dance partner in and danced
to the students performing “Flip Flop & Fly.” It was a an
amazing night and one that we were all very proud of.
Mary and David Lewis took great photos of the week-long
Camp. You can follow this link http://

CD Reviews........................................................
MONDAY NIGHT
The CD Woodbury Band
Wild Willie Productions LLC
Monday Night is rich in the
tradition of the Blues. I hear
everything from Delta,
Roadhouse, Funk, Chicago, Stax
R&B, and Louis Jordan to Gary
Clark, Jr. in this original work
by The CD Woodbury Band
from Washington. The keyboards, guitar and grooving bass line
and foundation are solid.
Track one, “These Blues Keep Me Right Here,” delivers a big
blues sound with keyboard and horn and a solid foundation
provided by bass and drums. An excellent keyboard solo really
rocks in the standard Chicago blues fashion. “Mean Jenny” has
the old train-track rhythm with good keyboard. This one has a
rocking and driving sound and is good dance music. The beginning
driving guitar riffs on “Been So Long” remind me of Gary Clark
Jr.’s” Don’t Owe You a Thang.” The keyboards really weave
richness to the fabric of this driving piece. “Monday Night” has a
funky beat like a Stax record with the Memphis Horns. “Pawn
Shop” reminds me of a full sound of classic blues with a leading
guitar and excellent support from the keyboards, horns, bass and
drums. Track six, “Pleasure’s All Mine” is not my favorite piece.
It’s not really blues in my opinion. There’s dissonant harmony, a
boring simplistic beat and the vocals are average. To me it sounds
like a cheesy Broadway tune. They can’t be all winners! “RingA-Ding” has a burlesque beginning then transitions to a Louis
Jordan type of Jump Blues reminiscent of “Saturday Night Fish
Fry” “Burn The Bridge” successfully combines rock, funk and
the blues. This track has a really nice sax solo that keeps your toe
tapping. “Two Wheels” is a Texas Roadhouse blues with a driving
beat and great guitar and piano solos. There’s an Old Time Blues
groove with modern jazzy overtones on “SauBall Blues.”
Overall, I found The CD Woodbury Band to play a rich weave
of the music that is in the soundtrack of my life with a solid blues
foundation. I’m a sucker for keyboards and Chris Kliemann really
has it down to an art form. I would buy Monday Night for his
work alone. That is not to take away from CD Woodbury’s guitar
licks, which are awesome, but I find the keyboard adds a special
flavor that is appealing to me personally. ~ Barb Kabes
Orpheum Theater in Wichita) to their discography, and it’s a good
guess that they’ve got more to come.
In an online interview clip, Terry Quiett, tells us that his band
straddles the line between blues and rock. On this album, they
straddle and fuse, and ease on down the road, throwing in some
jazz influences for good measure. The band, consisting of Quiett
(vocals and guitar), Aaron Underwood (bass and backing vocals),
and Rodney Baker on drums, is tight and powerful, with a strong
command of their instruments. Every song is a good one.
Right from the start, the CD opens with a driving, catchy tune,
“Karma” (listen to it here www.reverbnation.com/terryquiettband),
setting the tone for the wide stylistic range, from wah-wah to slide,
to acoustic, and just plain great guitar that carries on throughout
the album.
The legendary Jim Gaines had lots of good material to work with
when he produced this album, and he mixed it to perfection.
All of the songs were written by Terry Quiett, and that’s a good
thing, because he’s an excellent lyricist. His songs are carefully
crafted stories, vignettes and thoughtful commentary on lessons
learned from life
This band plays a lot of festivals and opening act gigs for wellknown artists. I’d recommend that you get yourself a copy of Just
My Luck, to keep it in your playlist as a reminder that you want to
get out and hear them live if they ever come rolling into town.
