It is in giving that

Strategic Planning Process begins for
Aquinas & St. Mary’s
In June, faculty and staff
began meeting with Strategic Planning consultant Eva
Fujan to kick off the first
phase of creating a Strategic
Plan to insure our schools
will be here for the next fifty
years and beyond. From
that phase of the project,
strengths and weaknesses
of the schools were identified with help from the
group and over 40 parents,
alumni and benefactors who
were interviewed regarding
the overall performance of
the schools in all areas.
That data was compiled
and presented at a Public
Forum on September 9th.
Applications were taken for
six spots open on the Strategic Planning Team and
that group started meeting
on September 23rd to begin the process of developing an overall Strategic Plan
for the schools. This plan
will be made available during Catholic Schools Week
which is the last week of
January 2016. The Team will
be meeting twice a month
until the end of 2015 and
during that time three more
Public Forum’s will be held
to give parents, alumni and
benefactors a chance to be
a part of the process also.
Once the new Strategic
Plan has been given out in
January, the final phase of
this process will begin. This
phase is the implementation
phase and will involve even
more of our parents and
benefactors to help carry
out the plan in the years go
come.
One area that was identified as a weakness this past
summer was communication, and steps have already
been taken to begin the work
on this area. The school is
in the process of creating a
new website which will be
up and running in December.
From this new website you
will be able to upload school
schedules to your phone,
submit address changes,
make donations, access information on all areas of the
school, and access parish
information. It will be easy
Aquinas Seniors and St.
Mary’s kindergartners spend
time together a couple of
times a month to read and
do activities together.
to navigate and will be updated on a daily basis by the
recently hired Marketing Assistant, Laura Adair. A new
facebook page and twitter
account are in the works to
provide another avenue of
communication. Laura will
also be helping us to develope marketing pieces that
will provide people in our
area information about our
schools.
We are excited to see all
of the good things that will
come out of this process.
We have a great Catholic
School System but there is
always room for change and
improvement.
We want
to insure the future of our
schools to guarantee they
will be around for years to
come. In today’s world,
families need and want the
availability of a Catholic education for their children and
Aquinas and St. Mary’s want
to be that school.

From the S
Dear Parishioners, Alumni,
and Friends of Aquinas and
St. Mary’s,
Our theme for this
new school year is “We are
Catholic”. The theme is very
simple, yet very profound
and a worthy challenge for
all of us. As followers of
Jesus Christ, we strive every
day here at Aquinas and
St. Mary’s to live our lives
in imitation of him. God’s
grace assists us in that high
endeavor, and even though
we know we are fallen human beings, we still want
a high standard for our
mission here on earth. “We
are Catholic” cannot only
be words that we say; they
must be words that we live
by as a Christ-centered edu-
cational system. We want
our Catholic faith to permeate everything that we do,
whether we are a student,
faculty or staff member,
coach, or volunteer. We
are grateful to God and His
Providence that we have
incredible Catholic schools
with amazing people in our
community.
The Endowment
Fund exists to assist us in
providing a solid Catholic
education for our young
people. This year the Endowment made total distributions of $210,151.00 for
the benefit of our Catholic
schools, which is more than
last year. As of June 30,
2015, our endowment was
$4,544,132! We are grateful

From the D
Dear Friends of Aquinas and
St. Mary’s,
Mother Teresa once
said, “We ourselves feel that
what we are doing is just a
drop in the ocean. But the
ocean would be less because
of that missing drop.”
This is so true of all
of the gifts of time, talent
and treasure that we receive
at Aquinas and St. Mary’s
everyday. We need and appreciate each and every one
of them. Whether you serve
on a committee or board,
make a donation of cash or
grain, offer prayers and sacrifices or volunteer to do
something using the talents
you have, we just wouldn’t
be the same without your
gifts.
In turn, your example of generosity helps
to teach our students the
importance of gifting time,
talent and treasure. Your
drop in the ocean shows
them how important it is to
support those in need and
to spread the love of Jesus
Christ. By being a drop in
the ocean you are showing
them that “We Are Catholic”
just like this year’s theme
says.
As you read this re-
for the support of so many
in our community for the
Endowment Fund that has
been helping to support our
school budget since 1983.
Aquinas and St. Mary’s are
so blessed to have dedicated board members, a solid
Investment Policy Statement, and very knowledgeable money managers.
“We are Catholic”.
Our theme really defines
why we exist as a Catholic
school. There are some
good academic public
schools in the country, but
they cannot offer what we
offer. We offer the difference that matters the most:
the Catholic faith that flows
throughout the school, not
just in theology class, but
throughout all classes and
activities. Of course, we also
get to worship God at Mass,
prayer, and the celebration
of the sacraments. I am extremely grateful for everyone whose name is listed in
this annual report, and for
the many others who give
generously to our parishes
that support our wonderful
Catholic schools.
port, you will see how our
ocean gets filled each and
every year. We have those
who have remembered our
schools with a bequest or
named fund. We have those
who have given to Annual
Funds such as the Torch Club
and Phone-a-thon. We have
those who give through
Gold Rush, memorials, or by
giving of their time to serve
on Strategic Planning, Endowment, or school boards.
We ask that you continue to
pray for us as we strive each
day to educate our youth
in a Christ-centered learning environment in order to
prepare them to deal with
their future involvement in
church, family and civic relationships. This is our mission. This is our prayer.
One final note, we
are going to start sending
a monthly newsletter that
is in addition to the parent
newsletter called The Torch.
The new e-newsletter will
be called the Monarch Minute and will go to anyone
who would like to receive it.
Please send us your email
address so we can include
you on our list. You can send
your email to: deb-svec@

Aquinas and St. Mary’s Heritage Club
Have you made provisions in your will and estate planning for a gift to Aquinas and St. Mary’s Schools? If so,
we’d like to invite you to be a member of the Heritage Club. There are no offices to be held or meetings to attend. The Heritage Club gathers twice a year for Mass and a social time. This gives the school a chance to say
“thank you” to our benefactors for remembering the schools with a planned gift. We add new members each
year...could our next member be you?!? Contact Fr. Sean Timmerman or Deb Svec in the Development Office
(367-3175) if you would like more information.

Named Funds Within Endowment Leave Legacy
Named Funds can be created within the Endowment Fund with donations of $10,000 or more. Some of these
funds are for specific areas of the school while other gifts are simply sizeable donations or bequests. Contact

Parents of Twelve Aquinas Graduates Honored
with Named Fund in Endowment
Leo and Josephine Hain
raised 12 children in the
Butler County area and all
12 of those children are
graduates of Aquinas High
School. Over a course
of eighteen years--from
1974-1992-- children from
the Hain family graced
the halls of Aquinas and
now some of Leo and
Josephines grandchildren
carry on the tradition. Leo
and Josephine’s children
include: Carol ‘74, Jerrold
‘75, Ray ‘76, Cathy ‘78, Joe
‘80, Alice ‘82, David ‘83,
Janet and Jim ‘85, Margaret ‘87, Richard ‘91 and
JoAnne ‘92.
Leo and Josephine firmly
believed in the value of
a Catholic education and
that is why they sacrificed
to send their children to a
catholic school. Because
of this firm belief, their
children decided to create a named fund within
the Endowment Fund to
honor their memory and
their love for Aquinas.
This fund will benefit the
library at Aquinas which is
an area of the school used
by all of the students. As
this fund grows, the interest will be used to supplement the library budget
and meet the needs of
educating the student
body at Aquinas Middle
School and High School.
“When I look back
now at my parents raising twelve kids, I realize
that they must have been
saints.” said daughter
Cathy, “They were so
proud of the fact that we
all graduated from Aquinas. Our firm foundation
of catholic education is
what led us to be living as
successful adults all over
the world.”
Although some of the
Hain siblings live in the
Aquinas area, most of
them live too far away to
give of their time and talent to Aquinas. They felt
that by setting up a named
fund in their parents
memory that this was a
way that they could honor
their parent’s dedication to catholic education
and to help to insure the
future of Aquinas Catholic
Schools.

2014-15 Torch Club Campaign
The 2014-15 Torch Club Campaign for our Aquinas and St. Mary’s teachers was kicked off last fall. The base pay
for our teachers has been frozen for many years now, and the incentive pay is the only way we can bring their
compensation up to a fair and just level. In this sense, it is not “bonus pay”, but rather a necessary fund to make
sure that we can be as competitive as possible when it comes to hiring new teachers and maintaining the great
teachers that we already have. We give thanks to the many donors who donated to this campaign last year.

Rejoice in the Past, Reach for the Future Campaign
In January we will begin
our fifth and final year
of pledge payments on
the Rejoice in the Past,
Reach for the Future
Campaign. We are so
blessed to have so many
donors who have been
diligent about making
payments on their committment to this campaign. Our students,
faculty, staff, parents,
alumni and benefactors
have all gotten to benefit
from the beautiful facilities that were added on
or improved at both of
our campuses for Aquinas and St. Mary’s. If you
have not yet been able to
come and see everything
that was accomplished
with your generous gifts,
please stop by so we can
give you a tour.
Two years from now,
the Annual Report will include the names of those
who have fulfilled their
pledges to this five year
campaign. Thank you so
much for your generous
gifts.

Remembering Our Schools
A bequest is one way
that donors choose in
order to remember Aquinas and St. Mary’s with
a planned gift through
their will. Three donors
did just that this past
year. Sometimes these
gifts can be designated
to a certain area of the
school, such as the Endowment Fund. Other
times, the gifts are just
given to the school and
used where they are
most needed.
Aquinas and St. Mary’s
Catholic Schools were
the recipents of both
types of gifts this past
year. Rev. Peter Gadient,
a priest with the Diocese
of Lincoln for many years
passed away this past
year and left a gift for the
Endowment Fund. This
gift was large enough
to create a named fund
in his name within the
Endowment. Donald
Malovec, a bus driver for
Aquinas and St. Mary’s
for many years, also
remembered the schools
in his will with a bequest
to the Endowment Fund.
Rudolph Rezac bequested
gifts for Aquinas and St.
Mary’s Schools seperately. These gifts were
not designated for a
certain fund and helped
to repave the parking lot
at St. Mary’s Elementary
and also helped to build
up the Torch Club Fund
for teacher salaries.

nce again, the Aquinas Alumni have out done themselves. Thank you Alumni for helping to get the
Phone-a-thon total to--$51,903.46! The funds from phone-a-thon help to bridge the gap between tuition
and parish assessments. Calls were made during two evenings in November thanks to alumni of the David City
area. The top class this year was the class of 1981 with a total of $3,016.86. The rest of the classes filling out
the top ten are: ‘68, ‘79, ‘63, ‘66, ‘80 ‘76, ‘70, ‘82 and ‘87. The top five classes gave over $2,000.00 per class
and the rest of the top ten all gave over $1,700.00 per class.
