Members get tickets for these special shows for just £3.75, including refreshments and an introduction to the film. Imagine a world before the internet, before TV and when newspapers barely had any pictures printed in them. Back in the 1930s a phenomenon swept the UK as News Theatres were set up to show newsreel films to the public. People flocked to these cinemas to see world events as moving images for the very first time. The Tyneside Cinema was originally built as Newcastle’s News Theatre in 1937 and today is the finest surviving newsreel cinema in Britain. Every day of the week our permanent exhibition describes the history of the building and how the news was filmed and screened in the days of the newsreels. Membership is FREE. Sign up today, just call 0845 217 9909 or email [email protected]. Silver Screen members get discounts in the Tyneside Coffee Rooms too (available on day of show only)! Silver Screen frequently sells out in advance, so we strongly recommend advance booking. THE EXTRA MAN (18) FRI 24 SEPTEMBER, 8.00PM DONKEYS (15 TBC) MON 27 SEPTEMBER, 8.45PM CHERRY TREE LANE (18) WEDS 29 SEPTEMBER, 8.45PM Dirs. Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini. USA 2010. 1hr 47mins. Dir. Morag McKinnon. UK 2010. 1hr 18mins. Dir. Paul Andrew Williams. UK 2010. 1hr 17mins. Paul Dano and Kevin Kline star in this stylish, strange and dazzling comedy of manners telling the tale of Lewis, an eccentric shy young man who moves to New York, only to be taken under the wing of an even more eccentric older man – an escort for the wealthy widows of Manhattan high society. Adapted from the novel by Jonathan Ames, The Extra Man boasts one of Kevin Kline’s funniest ever performances. Taking a lead from the competitive, creative community of the Dogme movement, the Lars Von Trier-led Advance Party imposes new rules on its filmmakers, involving the use of a pool of pre-determined characters, played by the same actors in all the films. They must also all shoot on digital, on location in Glasgow, and in six weeks. Alfred (James Cosmo) is 64. After a somewhat misspent life, he’s lost touch with his family and a threat to his health makes him realise he wants to make amends. The more he tries to do right, the more he does wrong, and as his past comes back to haunt him, he is forced to face up to what his life means to him. Supplied with a sublime script, the cast take it and run, barely stopping to catch a breath. Don’t miss. London To Brighton director Paul Andrew Williams returns with another brilliantly blistering film. Middle class couple Mike and Christine are settling in for an ordinary evening complete with tv, wine and bickering. When the doorbell rings they’re greeted by a group of local hoodlums looking for their son, Sebastian, who apparently ripped them off in a drug deal. The boys are prepared to take up camp until he returns, resulting in raw, revealing and nerve-splittingly tense drama. USA 2010. 1hr 47mins. Dir. Shimmy Marcus. UK 2010. 1hr 23mins. After nabbing the screenwriting and jury prizes at this year’s Sundance and Berlin film festivals, this cracking thriller comes to the Tyneside. 17-yearold Ree sets out to track down her junkie father, who put their house up for his bail bond and then disappeared. If she fails, Ree, her mentally ill mother and the rest of her family will be turned out into the Ozark woods. Ree’s search takes our hard-nosed heroine face-toface with small-time crooks, her mysterious (and suspicious) extended family and into danger and despair as she’s plunged deeper and deeper into her desperate quest. An astounding and haunting film featuring an incredible, star-making performance from Jennifer Lawrence. Not to be missed! Oscar nominated actor Casey Affleck (The Killer Inside Me, Gone Baby Gone) has his first stab at directing with this striking documentary about acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix (Walk The Line) that may or may not be one elaborate hoax. Two years ago Phoenix announced that he was quitting his successful acting career to focus on becoming a hip-hop star. Since then Affleck has followed him around documenting everything, from odd interviews on US talk shows to an on stage meltdown during his debut performance, all the while keeping up the pretence that this is a ‘serious’ film. Be it documentary or mockumentary, I’m Still Here is an intriguing film that will either give you an amazing insight into Phoenix’s tumultuous year or it’s a ticket to this year’s best practical joke. The talk of the Edinburgh Film Festival this year, north east production company Ipso Facto Films’ fantastic SoulBoy is taking the UK by storm and is a brilliant coming-of-age tale with an ace turn from rising star Martin Compston (The Disappearance Of Alice Creed) as Joe, a country boy with an eye for the ladies stuck in a rural village in the 1970s with nothing to do and nowhere to go. He’s in a rut, but when he meets hairdresser Jane, who’s into the Northern Soul movement in a big way, Joe decides to bluff his way into the scene…. “This is one helluva drama, with one helluva star turn by Jennifer Lawrence.” San Francisco Chronicle box office 0845 217 9909 book online www.tynesidecinema.co.uk FREE FILM NIGHT IN THE TYNESIDE BAR FROZEN (15) FRI 24 & SAT 25 SEPTEMBER, 10.30PM THE TOWN (15) STARTS FRI 24 SEPTEMBER Dir. Adam Green. USA 2010. 1hr 33mins. Dir. Ben Affleck. USA 2010. 2hrs 5mins. Late night chills in this brilliant indie suspenser. Ever wondered what would happen if you were accidentally locked in somewhere after closing? Well wonder no more, as this is precisely what happens to three American teens in Frozen. But they’re not stuck the night at school, or in the shopping mall: it’s a ski lift, half way up a mountain, for a week. With hypothermia and frostbite kicking in rapidly, the trio find themselves making some tough decisions for survival – and that there’s more to brave on the mountain than just the elements. From one Affleck to another, as brother Ben follows up his blinding debut feature Gone Baby Gone with another acclaimed and powerful thriller based on Chuck Hogan’s award winning novel, Prince of Thieves. Four bank robbers are planning their next heist in Boston’s infamous Charlestown district. When ringleader Doug (Affleck) falls for a bank manager (Rebecca Hall) who’s connected to a previous job, he finds that she’s the one thing separating his freedom from his capture by gloryhungry FBI agent Adam Frawley (Jon Hamm, Mad Men). Under Affleck’s assured direction, the film delivers twists and thrills in all the right places. “A nifty little chiller that balances its cold terrain with an unexpectedly warm heart.” The New York Times “A triumph.” Total Film CERTIFIED COPY (12A) Copie conforme STARTS FRI 24 SEPTEMBER Dir. Abbas Kiarostami. France, Italy & Iran 2009. 1hr 47mins. In English and French and Italian with English subtitles. Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami’s first European film is an elegant treat. Starring Juliette Binoche (who won the Best Actress award at Cannes this year), it’s the tale of impulsive gallery owner Elle, who meets British author James whilst on a Tuscan day trip. Together the pair decide to pretend to be a long-suffering couple for the day and over their trip discuss originality in art and culture, all the while keeping the audience guessing as to the true nature of their relationship. An absolute delight from start to finish, this is playful and smart filmmaking (think Before Sunrise for grown-ups) with a driving performance from Binoche. Patrick McGrady. UK, Switzerland, Russia & Germany 2010. Running time TBC. Dir. Tom Six. Netherlands 2009. 1hr 32mins. In English, German and Japanese with English subtitles. Stephen Fry explores his passion for the world’s most controversial composer. But Stephen is Jewish and lost family in the Holocaust – can he salvage Richard Wagner’s music from its dark associations with anti-Semitism and Hitler? Our hero’s quest unfolds against the backdrop of the annual Wagner Festival in Bayreuth, southern Germany. Granted unique access to this legendary arts institution, he eavesdrops on rehearsals and discovers its backstage secrets and explores the other landmarks of Wagner’s extraordinary career in Germany, Switzerland and Russia. Animated by Fry’s trademark wit and intelligence, and featuring a soundtrack of Wagner’s revolutionary music, this is a fantastic introduction to the life and legacy of one of history’s great geniuses, and required viewing for anyone who already loves Wagner’s work. Yep, its back! After the hugely popular screenings in August proved there are definitely quite a few twisted minds out there in the North East, we’ve decided to bring back The Human Centipede to give any other curious cinemagoers the chance to find out why you don’t want to be the middle! When two American girls find themselves stranded in Germany, they seek help from local resident Dr. Heiter. Little do they know that he’s a deranged surgeon who plans to use them as part of an horrific operation. Grotesque, gruesome and a little bit tongue in cheek (pardon the pun) The Human Centipede does exactly what it says on the tin, and if that doesn’t put you off then you’re clearly meant to see this freaky, fantastic film. In this unique High School film, Napoleon tries to help his best friend win the class presidency while he must deal with his bizarre family life back home. Pickin’ Flicks programmer Ben says: The thing I loved about Napoleon Dynamite was that it wasn’t trying to be a deep film with a well structured plot. Instead it was purely about the characters and the audience’s journey with Napoleon in this whacky, different, ‘out of the box’ High School film. Special ticket price of £4 for 15-18 card holders. Nigel Cole. UK 2010. 1hr 52mins. Based on the 1968 strikes for equal pay at Dagenham’s Ford cars factory, this ace true story flies the flag for women’s rights via a cracking script and a great cast. Sally Hawkins (from Mike Leigh’s Happy-go-Lucky) is Rita, the firebrand who gets a group of feisty female factory workers campaigning for equal pay, taking their fight from the factory floor to their male-dominated trade union, to the national press and beyond. Also starring Miranda Richardson and Bob Hoskins, Made In Dagenham is a glorious time-capsule for anyone who lived through the 60s and an undeniable slice of historic fun for anyone who hasn’t. A must-see. POLICE, ADJECTIVE (12A) Politist, adjectiv. STARTS FRI 1 OCTOBER Dir. Corneliu Porumboiu. Romania 2009. 1hr 55mins. In Romanian with English subtitles. Winner of the Jury award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, this Kafka-esque Romanian crime drama is a wonderfully inventive, compelling and surprisingly funny story about a police officer facing a battle of wills between his duty and his conscience. Cristi is a young cop who refuses to arrest a teenager suspected of dealing drugs in school because he fears a prison sentence will ruin the boy’s life. Pressed by his dictionary obsessed captain to close the case with a quick arrest, Cristi doggedly searches for evidence that will help prove the boy’s innocence. A gripping film that replaces the usual clichés of the genre for something far more profound, and much more rewarding. “Complex, intellectually rigorous and yet incredibly enjoyable on multiple levels” Little White Lies BBFC classification advice: contains soft drug use. Brad Pitt and Ed Norton trade blows in what is essentially a story about men finding themselves by beating the merry heck out of each other. Told in four episodes, Jean Cocteau’s influential film sees an unnamed artist transported through a mirror into another dimension. Live and in person, musical legend Steven Severin here presents an avantgarde musical event around the film, steeped in the darkness and light of the seductively surreal images on screen. Steven Severin formed Siouxie And The Banshees along with Siouxie Sioux in 1976. Since the mid-nineties, he has created solo albums, movie soundtracks, written as a journalist, created a collection of erotic prose/poetry and compositions to accompany silent film. Packed with sly humour, this fantastic film from South America is the story of Raquel (Catalina Saavedra), a middle aged woman who has worked for the same family for over half her life. The repetition and strain of Raquel’s life and work has made her bitter and more and more dependent upon medication to get her through her days, and when her employer Pilar decides to get Raquel some help, a power struggle with a succession of new maids ensues. This film tells the story behind ‘that site’ and its creator Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg), following the personal and professional battles he’s encountered. Whether you love or loathe Facebook, the story of its origins is definitely one worth telling – especially in the hands of Fincher. GREAT SCOTT! It’s only out for a limited time, so don’t be a butthead, get along to the Tyneside and have a real blast from the past! This cool, cheeky and compelling drama adapts the biography of elite British drug smuggler Howard Marks, (Rhys Ifans, Notting Hill, Enduring Love), a man who during the mid 1980s, had forty-three aliases, eighty-nine phone lines, and twenty five companies trading throughout the world. The film follows Marks from his early days as a dealer during his postgraduate philosophy course at Oxford, to his time spent moving large quantities of hashish into Europe and America in the equipment of touring rock bands. A superb stranger-than-fiction story that’s bolstered by Ifans’ charismatic central turn and a fantastic supporting cast that includes Chloe Sevigny and David Thewlis. “The movie of the year that also brilliantly defines the decade” Rolling Stone Visit the Tyneside Cinema Facebook page at www.facebook.com/tynesidecinema OVER YOUR CITIES GRASS WILL GROW (cert TBC) STARTS FRI 15 OCTOBER Dir. Sophie Fiennes. France 2010. Running time TBC. In French and English with English subtitles. Filmmaker Sophie Fiennes delivers an intimate exploration into the work of German artist Anselm Kiefer. Since 2000 Kiefer has lived and worked in La Ribaute, a derelict silk factory in the South of France. Here he has created a sprawling 35 hectare complex of art installations, including huge concrete towers, underground tunnels and pools, woods and caves. Fiennes captures these gorgeous and imposing landscapes with ease, and films Kiefer and his team creating his work. An atmospheric soundtrack perfectly complements the visuals, making this film a feast for eyes and ears. Contemporary, beguiling and beautiful. Make sure you catch the Anselm Keifer exhibition at BALTIC, from 8 October 16 January 2011. Find out more at www.balticmill.com. 24 SPECIAL EVENT Want to see your film at the Tyneside? Birdemic: Shock and Terror, is a low-budget, high-concept thriller that sees boy meet girl, boy fall in love with girl, and then boy and girl get caught up in an attack by eagles and vultures on a small town as nature turns against man. MOTHER (15) Madeo THURS 21 OCTOBER, 8.30PM DOGTOOTH (18) Kynodontas WEDS 10 NOVEMBER, 8.45PM Dir. Joon-Ho Bong. South Korea 2009. 2hrs 10mins. In Korean with English subtitles. Dir. Giorgos Lanthimos. Greece 2009. 1hr 27mins. In Greek with English subtitles. A gripping whodunit from the director of The Host, this story of a mother hunting for the killer who framed her mentally-challenged son is absolutely must-see cinema. Mike Tait, Tyneside Cinema Projects Officer says: Made in Korea in 2009, but this film made me think of vintage Hollywood such as Mildred Pierce and Stella Dallas. It’s utterly different in style – with one of the most uniquely unsettling opening scenes in recent years – but deals with the eternal question of just how far a parent might go to protect their child. It’s gripping, chilling and – occasionally – laugh-outloud funny. Anyone with a mother should see it. And wonder…. Two parents, desperate to maintain their children’s innocence, keep them confined in the family home. But as the children’s curiosity about what lies beyond the walls increases, their father is forced to take more drastic action to keep the order. Steve Drayton, Tyneside Cinema regular: Dogtooth is remarkable in that it’s so bleak, so turn-your-head-away-fromthe-screen violent, yet it’s engaging, funny and downright brilliant. The black humour, excellent leaps of imagination and a superb cast draw you in and the final denouncement is so shockingly plausible, which, coupled with an ambiguous ending keep the characters living in the mind for hours after. This film is unlike any I’ve seen. Uncomfortably brilliant. AFRICA UNITED (TBC) STARTS FRI 22 OCTOBER Dir. Debs Gardner-Paterson. Rwanda & South Africa 2010. Running time TBC. This uplifting film is set to take the world by storm! Dudu, a quick-witted and resourceful boy is delighted to learn his friend Fabrice has been asked to show off his football skills at the World Cup Opening Ceremony, so with the help of Dudu’s older sister Beatrice, they set off on a 5,000km journey. As the trio make their way through Africa they meet others who harbour the same passion and the motley troupe steadily grows. Negotiating their way through different sticky situations – hilarious and terrifying in turn – the gang’s bond of friendship grows as they reach their destination. Adventure, touches of stark realism and great moments of fun are all present, and director Debs Gardner-Paterson delivers a captivating debut, defining what it means to be an African child in 2010. 26 Aged between 15 and 18? The first HD film about the Tour de France, Chasing Legends takes viewers on an intense journey through the most arduous bike race on the planet, following the stellar 2009 HTC Team Columbia from Monaco into The Pyrenees, via The Alps and finally, into Paris. Narrated by Phil Liggett and featuring a cast of the sport’s most venerated heroes, from Eddie Merckx to Lance Armstrong, the movie tracks the humble but no-less heroic origins of ‘Le Tour’. This screening features a live Q&A broadcast from Greenwich with the HTC team, including star British bad boy Tour de France winner, Mark Cavendish & Brian Holm. Tickets: £8/£7 concessions THE ARBOR (15) STARTS FRI 22 OCTOBER CARLOS (15) STARTS SUN 24 OCTOBER Dir. Clio Barnard. UK 2010. 1hr 34mins. Dir. Olivier Assayas. France & Germany 2010. Extended cut: 5hrs 25mins plus intermission. Feature version: 2hrs 45mins. In French, German, English, Spanish and Arabic with English subtitles. This genre-defying film is set in The Arbor, the area of Bradford where the late playwright Andrea Dunbar grew up. Dunbar wrote brutal and telling plays about life in The Arbor, before her own life was cut short in 1990. For two years director Cleo Barnard has been interviewing people who knew Dunbar, and then editing the audio over actors who have perfectly mimed the interviewees. This footage is mixed with newly filmed excerpts from Dunbar’s first play, (titled The Arbor), as acted in the streets she grew up in. Barnard also manages to connect with Dunbar’s daughter Lorraine, 29 (the age Dunbar was when she died), and explores the troubled relationship they shared. Truly insightful and remarkable filmmaking, and one of the best films of 2010. This new film from Oliver Assayas (Irma Vep) is a gripping account of the story of Venezuelan revolutionary Ilich Ramirez Sanchez aka Carlos the Jackal, who founded a worldwide terrorist group in the mid-70’s. The story follows Sanchez, played here by the outstanding Édgar Ramírez (Che – Part One) as he goes from political idealist ‘fighting for the oppressed people’ to a mercenary for hire who loses his lust for revolution. Assayas’ film is richly rewarding, mixing original news footage with aggressive action for a superb analysis of the subject of terrorism in the twilight of the Cold War era. On Sunday 24 October at 12.00pm we screen an extended 5hr 25mins version of Carlos. The feature length version opens on Friday 29 October. THE MAN WHO LOVED YNGVE (15) Mannen som elsket Yngve TUES 26 OCTOBER, 6.00PM Dir. Stian Kristiansen. Norway 2008. 1hr 30 mins. In Norwegian with English subtitles. Set in the late 80s, this Norwegian gem follows Jarle, your stereotypical teenage boy who loves punk rock, his friends and his girlfriend. But his whole life changes when he falls in love with Yngve, the new boy in his class, who is everything he isn’t…. Pickin’ Flicks programmer Beth says: “This film perfectly captures a teenager’s identity crisis. It’s fresh, sweet and laugh out loud funny and you can’t help but relate to each character. Not forgetting the awesome soundtrack from The Buzzcocks, The Cure and Joy Division. What’s not to love?” Special ticket price of £4 for 15-18 card holders. Join us for a very special late screening of the film that defined modern day horror: John Carpenter’s Halloween. Michael Myers returns home to stalk the teenagers of Haddonfield, and in doing so became one of the most iconic figures in film history. Join us for this very special show, and there may just be a few surprises on the night…. Come along if you think you can hack it! To mark the Newcastle Zombie walk starting later in the day, we present a special Halloween show of the greatest Zombie movie of all time. George Romero’s satire on consumer culture is legendary, but cast aside the social commentary and lap it up for what it is – a terrifying look at life at the end of the world seen through the eyes of a ragtag gang of four survivors who find solace in the fortress-like out of town shopping centre. Do not miss this chance to see Dawn Of The Dead on the big screen, and if you come as a zombie you get in for just £3.75! The most talked-about movie at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, The Kids Are All Right is the kind of gloriously funny, heartfelt and warming film that will help cheer you up as the winter blues set in. Academy Award nominees Annette Bening (American Beauty) and Julianne Moore (A Single Man) are Nic and Jules, a married couple with two teenage children Joni and Laser (Alice In Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson). But when Joni brings her and Laser’s biological father or ‘biodad’ Paul (Mark Ruffalo, Shutter Island) into their lives, life takes a dramatic turn as family ties are defined, re-defined and then re-re-defined. Writer/director Lisa Cholodenko’s film is a remarkable dramedy, mixing a smart script with superb performances that could make it the indie hit of the year. Hilariously funny, utterly heartfelt, Withnail is a true national institution. Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann have never been better as the two out of work actors who go on holiday by mistake to the Lakes and encounter weather, bulls and Withnail’s predatory Uncle Monty. Possibly the funniest British film ever, Withnail has great actors, spouting the best lines, all wrapped up in Bruce Robinson’s amazingly arch story. “Hilarious and heartfelt. Irresistible.” Rolling Stone 31 MON-WEDS ARE STUDENT DAYS! PREVIEW SCREENING TORMENTED (15) TUES 2 NOVEMBER, 6.00PM Dir. Jon Wright. UK 2009. 1hr 31mins. With the tagline ‘Skins meets Scream’ this feature brings a modern twist to the meaning of the word horror. Asthmatic nerd Darren seeks revenge after being bullied by a group of merciless teenagers. After committing suicide he rises from the dead and persists on a murderous vengeance across the ‘ingroup’ of bullies…. Pickin’ Flicks programmer Amanda says: “With a mix of Shaun Of The Dead humour and slasher-style gore, Tormented is an imaginative comedic horror that keeps you on the edge of your seat but crying with laughter at the same time. WE ARE WHAT WE ARE (Cert TBC) Somos Lo Que Hay TUES 2 NOVEMBER, 8.45PM Dir. Jorge Michel Grau. Mexico 2010. Running time TBC. A special Day Of The Dead premiere. You may not expect the words ‘moving’, and ‘cannibal film’ to fit in the same sentence, but they do for this Mexican horror drama. After a father is killed, his widow and three children are left struggling to survive – the father fed his family on human flesh, which they now must find and eat themselves in order to stay alive. Director Grau manages to create a convincing emotional attachment to characters that are so far from the audience’s reality. Since showing at Cannes this year, it has been said to do for cannibal films what Let The Right One In did for vampires. Do not miss! ANOTHER YEAR (12A) STARTS FRI 5 NOVEMBER Dir. Mike Leigh. UK 2010. 2hrs 10mins. Award winning director Mike Leigh (Vera Drake, Happy-Go-Lucky) delivers another touching and beautifully nuanced film, that sees him collaborate once again with his cast of regulars, including Jim Broadbent (Life Is Sweet), and Leslie Manville, Ruth Sheen and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake). Lee’s brilliant film divides one year into four seasonal chapters following the lives of happily married couple Tom (Broadbent) and Gerri (Sheen) as they deal with their morose, love-starved friends Mary (Manville) and Ken, meeting their son’s new girlfriend and the tumultuous funeral of a family member. Another Year is a heartwarming film and one of Leigh’s best pieces of work to date. “A brilliant ensemble and a resonant script make Another Year one of Mike Leigh’s best films.” The Daily Telegraph BBFC classification advice: contains infrequent strong language. When he befriends Elli, a pale, wan girl from out of town, he may have found not only his first true friend, but also an ally and his soulmate.
