ABOUT THE DISTRICT
Historical Langside Street
F r ee G uided Wa lk To urs of West Broadway, Conduc ted by R obe rt S h aw
Longtime resident Robert Shaw, driven
by a love of his neighbourhood, has been
conducting FREE GUIDED WALKING
TOURS of West Broadway. His aim is to
share some of its rich history along with
with his own knowledge to demystify
some preconceptions and to celebrate
the place he calls home.
Have you ever wondered who originally
farmed the West Broadway area, or how
Good Street got its name? Want to know
which local resident sailed on the Titanic,
or where Budweiser got its famous
Clydesdales? Have any other questions
about the neighbourhood? Get a glimpse
into the history, people, and politics while
taking a stroll through this historic area!
Inspired by ‘Jane’s Walks’ and wanting
to offer similar guided neighbourhood
walks while paying homage to Val
Werier, local Winnipeg author and
urban activist, Robert’s intent is to
to shine a light on what makes a
neighbourhood great, to provide a
free guided tour through a walkable
neighbourhood, and to provide an
opportunity to meet and share ideas
about what makes a liveable, vibrant
community.
To register for a walk, or for more
information, visit the website:

ABOUT THE DISTRICT
Murals
in West Broadway
Taking Flight, 167 Sherbrook Street
M u r a l Design By Lo ca l Artist Michel St. Hilaire • www.m onmich e l .com
Sponsored by The West Broadway BIZ, Take Pride Winnipeg & Epic Information Solutions
Designed specifically for the Sherbrook
Street community and Epic Information
Solutions, this mural showcases symbols of
key subjects and phrases from CEO David
Reid while remaining true to the vision and
style Michel wants to convey as an artist
and resident of the community of West
Broadway, and to the concept of bringing
empowerment and vitality to the area.
The mural is painted in what is essentially
a surrealistic style. The scene is of our
great prairies on which we witness the
construction of diverse bridges and roads
that seem to be building themselves.
A tumultuous and dramatic band of
clouds roll on by and over various fields.
Diverse seasons and a mix of terrain
are depicted throughout the mural. A
female figure emerges from one of the
roads, symbolizing the human spirit,
souring through the sky for new ideas and
shooting ahead toward new destinations.
She is painted in an
art deco style, similar
to the classic car
emblems, and she
holds a large sphere
symbolic of a seed
which holds a new
thought or inspiration.

There is a very strong
sense of depth and
perspective to draw
in pedestrians, despite the mural’s being designed with the
heavy vehicular traffic flow of Sherbrook
in mind (as many are
taking the mural in
while driving quickly
by in their cars).

Winnipeg & Halal Meat Centre
(Co n t ’ d f rom page 7)
The initial concept for
the mural on the Halal
Meat Centre building was
meant to be a forest and
stream landscape. Yusuf
Abdulrehman, the owner
of Halal Meat Centre,
wanted something that
reflected both his culture,
and the culture of so many
other Winnipeggers. He
collected a variety of
images of Middle Eastern
markets, mosques and
minarets, oriental artwork,
and a few photos of his
hometown, Stone Town
Zanzibar. The original
artist, Mike Valcourt, was
able to weave together
these images into a large
two-storey mural. In the
old mural, was a hidden
alleyway with a mosque
that Abdulrehman used
to attend in Zanzibar as a
child.
About 12 years later, the
mural was due for an
update, and artist and
painter Michel St. Hilaire
offered his own spin on
the Middle Eastern market
scene. He used much of
his memories from travels
to Spain, and visits to their
markets with Moorish
histories, to complete
the current day mural.
The result is a striking,
vibrant, and colorful
market-scape. If you look
closely, you’ll still see the
influence of Zanzibar, as
Michel has tucked in a
typical Zanzibari door,
in the background. The
mural and the store,
have managed to bring
the flavour of the exotic
Middle East to the middle
of West Broadway, in the
heart of Winnipeg. To see
before and after images
of the mural, please visit
www.halalmeatcentre.ca
By integrating artwork
into public settings
we are simultaneously
enriching people’s daily
lives, and giving voice to
local artists. It is our goal
to visually define West
Broadway as a cultural
centre for innovation
and creativity. Murals
have proven to reduce
incidence of graffiti
while creating a safer
environment with a
greater sense of pride and
community spirit.
Sherbrook and Maryland
donned new murals
this past summer, both
creations of local artist
Michel St. Hilaire. These
murals are outstanding
works of art, vibrant,
detailed, both telling a
story of the business upon
which they rest. Many
thanks to Epic Information
Solutions & Halal Meat
Centre for providing
the locations for these
projects.
Do you have an idea
for a mural in West
Broadway or a location
you would like to see a
mural? We would love
to hear from you!

I n trod u ci ng The Edward Carriere Co mm u ni ty R i nk
Congratulations to Edward Carriere,
who at the Snoball Winter Carnival
was recognized and applauded by the
West Broadway community for creating
and maintaining some of the best
outdoor ice in the City. The rink at the
Broadway Neighbourhood Centre has
now been renamed The Edward Carriere
Community Rink!
Edward was presented with the Golden
Shovel Award by the Yeti. The Edward
Carriere Salon has been in West
Broadway since 1978; and Edward himself
has been an active board member of
the BIZ and a generous supporter of
this community in so many ways. We are
so fortunate to have such a wonderful
community activist in our midst.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT
Spotlight
On a New Business
Thom Bargen Coffee and Tea, 64 SHERBROOK STREET
p hoto cr edit: J osh Do okie
Graham Bargen and Thom Jon Hiebert
have mastered the art of the perfect
cup of coffee. Starting with only the
freshest roasted beans, supplied by
Canadian roasters sourcing fair trade
beans, adding to it a finer grind with
just the right water pressure and
temperature and voila, the results, well…
you will need to taste it for yourself!
Their shared passion for good coffee
is what led them to open Thom Bargen
Coffee and Tea, at 64 Sherbrook
Street. Their bright and airy shop
opened in early February inside a
newly built and beautifully designed
space. When scouting locations to open
their business, they looked around at
many areas of the City, and felt West
Broadway met all of their desires. From
there it was just a matter of finding the
right space to do it in.
Graham Bargen was elected to the
board of directors for 2013, sits on
the streetscaping committee, and
is excited to share his vision for this
area, a community he believes in. West
Broadway is thrilled to welcome another
independent business with community
minded entrepreneurs behind it.

Congratulations, Karen!
of Wanabees Diner
Karen was the recipient
of the Mayor’s BIZ
Award, for the significant
contributions she has made
to the West Broadway BIZ.
It has been nearly twenty
years since Wanabees
Diner first opened its doors
in West Broadway. Her
busy 31-seat nook at the
corner of Langside and
Broadway has become
a West Broadway staple
for breakfast and lunch.
But Karen still found the
time to sit on the Board
of Directors for the West
Broadway BIZ on and off
for the past 12 years.
(L-R) Leah McCormick, Jenny Gerbasi, Karen Ashley
During her time on the
board she sat on many
committees, including
Marketing & Promotion,
and helped oversee the
publication of many
community directories,
advertising campaigns, and
programs. Karen was never
without an opinion on a
subject, and never ever
found that the cat had got
her tongue!
For this, the board is
forever grateful. Her
vibrancy, energy and
enthusiasm for West
Broadway and the BIZ
board are still with us every
day, and we hope to get
her back on the board of
directors again soon!
