New Year, New Stores
FashionMANNUSCRIPT J A N U A R Y 2 015 CGS ACCELERATING THE WHOLESALE SALES & BUYING PROCESS ROSS WEST, JENNIFER TERRONE, XIOMARA ROZON, CRISTINA POLO, DANIELLA PLATT AND NEIL DORMAN FAITH ON FASHION New Year, New Stores BY FAITH HOPE CONSOLO, CHAIRMAN, THE RETAIL GROUP, DOUGLAS ELLIMAN A new year brings new opportunities in retail and fashion — more new designers from around the world are looking for stores in New York, and we’re providing ever more locations around all five boroughs. And 2015 will be no exception. Last year saw a flurry of new brands, designers and restaurants open to serve holiday shoppers and visitors, and this year already will see even more possibilities for our consumers. Happy 2015! All About Apparel Vive la France: Zadig & Voltaire will take its fifth store in the city at 453 Broome Street by mid-year. This will be a real concentration downtown for the brand, which also has a location on Mercer Street and will open at Westfield’s World Trade Center retail complex. An apparel-oriented expansion of lifestyle shop Lockwood, Lockwood Style offers clothing and accessories at 33-02 Broadway in Astoria, Queens. The neighborhood is slowly becoming a fashion destination (yes, fashion continues to follow food – and Astoria has been a dining haven for quite a while now – see below). Look for more boutiques to open in coming months and years. Roland Mouret made a spectacular U.S. debut at 952 Madison Avenue, just his second store overall (the other is in London’s Mayfair). The boutique houses his entire collection, from ready-to-wear to bridal to accessories. Apparel retailer Kiki Riki will have a flagship at 676 Broadway. Find True Religion early next year at 513 Broadway. Uniqlo made its Brooklyn debut at Atlantic Terminal Mall. Welcome back: Eddie Bauer (gone from the city for years) is popping up through February at 100 Fifth Avenue, then will shutter and reopen as a permanent store in May. This unit does offer a presentation of apparel that is geared more to the urban outdoors. Kit & Ace, a casual-wear apparel store created by the wife and son of a lululemon co-founder, has debuted at 255 Elizabeth Street. Its main claim to fame: a proprietary cashmere fabric that is the basis of its tees and other apparel for women and men. At press time, Anthropologie reportedly was this close to signing a lease at 195 Broadway. Agent Provocateur comes downtown at 259 Elizabeth Street. More For Men Caruso, with luxury Italian menswear from former Brioni Chairman Umberto Angeloni, held multiple grand opening events just before the holidays for its huge U.S. flagship at 45 East 58th Street. Formerly the Spanierman art gallery, the space now resembles an Italian villa – a very artistic treatment that is unusual for a men’s retailer. Let’s see if other designers emulate this stunning store. Fabulous Footwear More clicks are turning to bricks: A Jack Erwin men’s footwear showroom is opening at 10 Hubert Street – unlike other shoe fm stores, the location allows shoppers to try shoes on for online ordering. Moe’s Sneaker Spot offers Nike and other athletic brands at 1890 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. Just Gems Lulu Frost has debuted a boutique (including a make-your-own jewelry location) inside its studio at 12 East 20th Street. Brazilian jeweler Hueb has made its U.S. debut at 717 Madison. Downtown, Blue Bayer Design will highlight Blue Bayer’s distinctive jewelry at 40 Clinton Street. Be Beautiful IGK Salon bowed at 355 West 16th Street. Valley is taking a second location at 237 West 15th Street. All About Accessories Kipling made its New York City retail debut at 155 Spring Street. Hope you got there in time: ultra luxury e-commerce site Crest & Co., which offers leather goods, accessories and décor from some of great luxury brands, opened its first physical store as a pop-up inside Turnbull & Asser (50 East 57th Street) through December 31. Food, Glorious Food MaxDelivery, a grocer and delivery service, will open its second physical store at 318 West 39th Street. Mirage Kitchen, a quick-service Middle Eastern restaurant, will open early this year at 455 Park Avenue South. Adding to Astoria’s dining scene are Ba’sik, with American cuisine at 32-11 Broadway, and gastropub The Bonnie at 29-12 23rd Avenue. Chelsea Bagel has signed for its second city location at 800 Second Avenue. Hu Kitchen paleo cuisine is coming to 1536 Third Avenue this summer. Juice Generation will come to FiDi at 101 Maiden Lane early this year. Where The Heart Is Papyrus is taking Crumbs’ former space at 655 Avenue of the Americas. Contemporary art showroom Castor Gallery will have a grand opening at 254 Broome Street on January 15. Satisfy your need for books, prints, sculpture and more (and perhaps meet the artist) at Object-ify, 139 Essex Street. Happy New Year and Happy Shopping!
