A bunion is a poorly aligned big toe joint. The big toe may point
toward the second toe causing a bump on the outside edge of
the toe. This poorly aligned joint will lead to many complications
including arthritis including inflammatory or degenerative forms,
causing the protective cartilage that covers your big toe joint to
deteriorate. This is why it is so important to treat your bunion
deformity.
Bunions are often caused by an inherited foot type, foot
injuries, and certain deformities and can be exacerbated
by high heels or ill-fitting shoes. This may lead to swelling,
redness, or soreness around the big toe joint, thickening of
the skin at the base of the big toe, corns or calluses, pain
and restricted movement of the big toe. By pushing the
big toe inward, a bunion can squeeze your other toes into
abnormal positions. Over time, this crowding can lead to
contractures of the other toes known as hammertoes.
A bunion may be treated conservatively with such
modalities as utilizing wider shoes with a higher toe
box, paddings, strappings, ice, anti-inflammatory
medications, custom molded foot orthotics, and
injection therapy can help alleviate the symptoms
associated with a bunion. If these conservative
modalities fail to resolve the symptoms then
surgical management is an option and the
new technology available today can fix this
condition with minimal down time and
early return to work.

As summer begins to wind down and
back-to-school excitement rises, many
families are looking for ways to spend
more quality time together, whether
they are spending the day at the beach
or shopping for school clothes. Dining
out in restaurants is a perfect way to do
so, while not having the work of
putting a nutritious meal together.
And, finding a healthful meal choice at
a restaurant takes less of an effort too
with the National Restaurant
Association’s Kids LiveWell Recipe
Challenge initiative.
The association notes the Kids LiveWell
initiative today includes 145 restaurant
brands in more than 42,000 locations,
committed to providing more healthful
meals for children. Nutritious meals
can be found at all types of restaurants,
from independent to chain to casual
dining to quick-service, fast casual and
fine dining. They’re even available in
museums and theme parks.

operators the opportunity to showcase
the creative, healthful and flavorful
dishes they plan to feature on their

finalists and a team of elementary
school students chooses the eventual
recipe winners.
The winning recipes are to embody
nutritious and imaginative ideas, such
as a sandwich that uses multigrain and
pumpernickel bread shaped to look like
a piano, a dish that turns spaghetti and
meatballs into a pizza, and a quesadilla
and soft taco that incorporate whole
wheat, lean proteins and vegetables
into meals that are tasty and exciting.
Dishes like these go a long way in
getting young patrons excited about
eating healthful foods.
All of the challenge’s recipes are
required to meet nutrition criteria set
forth by the initiative, which is based
on the 2010 USDA Dietary Guidelines.

With many of us still trying to keep from gaining any extra
pounds as we continue to enjoy summer right before school
begins, culinary experts say simple and healthy food
substitutions can help.
Chef Andrew Lyman, culinary director, The Art Institute of
Austin, suggests, "It is not uncommon to use brown sugar, for
white sugar, but I often challenge my students to use other
ingredients as a sweetener. For example, using a teaspoon of
vanilla can often produce similar results as a cup of sugar and
it saves more than 400 calories. Another option is using
prunes for butter, especially in brownies or other dark baked
goods – ¾-cup of prunes with ¼-cup boiling water, puree to
combine and you have a great option.”
Chef/instructor Peachy Seiden from The International
Culinary School at The Art Institute of Cincinnati-Ohio says,
“Using pureed fruit warmed on the stovetop with a bit of
honey is a great substitute for classic maple syrup – decreasing
the sugar content and providing an extra dose of antioxidants
and vitamins and minerals."
Here are a few more substitutions you can make
in your recipes:
• Unsweetened applesauce for sugar (can be in a 1:1
ratio, but reduce the amount of liquid in the recipe by
¼-cup).
• Mashed bananas for fats. The creamy, thickening power
of very ripe mashed bananas is the ideal consistency in
place of one cup of butter or oil.
• Spaghetti squash for pasta is a natural substitute.
Simply roast and pull apart with a fork and voila.
• Using coconut oil instead of butter adds additional
health-benefiting nutrients and the flavor is superb.

When the kids head back to school, it’s normally a hectic time
for the entire family. However, you still want to make sure your
child is eating a nutritious diet to keep energy levels high and
concentration focused in school. Incorporating soy into your
child’s diet can help. Soyfoods contain vitamins and minerals,
such as iron, calcium, potassium and complete protein, which
will also help kids grow strong bones and lean muscles, setting
them up for a healthy future.
To introduce soy to their diet, blend it in. Soymilk and tofu both
blend well with other ingredients so put it in pizza, or a mac
and cheese dish. Make it fun too. Serve a variation of ants on a
log, but fill the celery with soynut butter before placing the
raisins on top. And, give them snacks, like Edamame. Kids can
pop the beans out of the pods and straight into their mouth.

Screen size varies. Parents looking
for a more generous screen may want
to check out the Toshiba, which offers
a 13-inch screen, and the HP with its
14-inch screen.
Durability. Some Chromebooks, such
as the Lenovo X131E, have been
developed and designed to be rugged.
Battery life. With longer battery life,
Chromebooks are less likely to turn
off mid-class. Intel-powered ones
boast a 57-percent longer battery life
while Web browsing, according to a
study by Principled Technologies.
Speed. A device’s processor should be
powerful enough to ensure students
can easily and quickly read textbooks
and take notes online, complete
homework, create presentations and
share files. Faster access means
students will spend less time waiting
and more time learning.
Graphics capabilities. Much of what
students do in class will be graphicsintensive (such as an anatomy
simulation), so their Chromebook
should run on a processor that will
allow for smooth, vibrant graphics
across all applications.
Price. Chromebooks can be especially
cost-effective. For example, the Acer
720 is a lighter and lower-cost device.
Support/resources. Choose a device
that offers students and parents
access to support and resources 24/7.

Whether you love to or not, shopping for kids’ back-to-school
clothing is at hand. But before you begin, prepare a list of needs
and check the style forecast. There seems to be a more modern
vibe in kids’ fashions this year, from mix-and-match combos to
sophisticated materials like tweeds in blazers. And, stripes
seem to be replacing checks, but graphic tees still remain cool.
However, classic foundation pieces, like a straight-leg cut of

Jill Smokler, author of the New York
Times bestselling book “Confessions
of a Scary Mommy” and “Motherhood

Lies),” shares tips and tricks on how
new moms can acclimate back into the
working world.
Plan ahead. After working a full day,
the last thing you’re going to feel like
doing is cooking dinner. My advice is to
embrace the wonder of the crockpot by
letting the machine fill your home with
the scent of a freshly cooked meal while
you’re miles away at work. You should
also lay out all your clothes for the
week on Sunday to avoid that moment
of tearing apart your closet when you
should already be in the car.
Another key plan is to have your baby’s
feeding agenda in place. According to a
survey conducted by Harris Interactive
on behalf of Perrigo Nutritionals, 42
percent of moms returning to work are
stressed about how they will feed their
baby. Some moms find substituting or
supplementing breast milk with infant
formula can make the transition into a
working mom much easier.
If you do use formula, be smart about
it. The FDA strictly regulates infant
formula to keep babies safe. For
example, formulas, like Walmart’s
Parent’s Choice Infant Formula, have to
meet strict FDA regulations. Plus, when
switching to store-brand formulas,
families can save up to $600 a year,
according to Perrigo Nutritionals.
Go shopping. Chances are you won’t
be fitting perfectly into your prepregnancy wardrobe by the time you
head back to work. Getting new clothes
that actually fit will do wonders for your
self-esteem. Just be sure to check your
shoulders before you leave the house,
as spit up can be more prominent on a
black business suit than an old T-shirt.
Give yourself a break. If you’re missing
your baby, allow yourself to have an
outburst every now and then. Just
remember to pick yourself up and get
back to work. Feeling guilty is a useless
emotion that isn’t going to help you
focus on your job or get you home
sooner to cuddle that baby of yours.

child’s room can mount quickly, but
with careful planning and a few smart
purchases, the decisions you make for
that nursery or toddler’s room can
create a functional and clutter-free
space that grows with your child well
into the teen years.
Lorie Marrero, a certified professional
organizer and author of “The Clutter
Diet,” has partnered with the experts
at ClosetMaid to offer these tips for
creating a room that transitions with
your youngster as childhood gives way
to adolescence.
Invest wisely. Select furniture that
will adapt to your child’s needs in the
highest quality your budget allows.
For example, if you’re starting with a
nursery, choose a crib that converts
to a toddler bed and even a twin or

double bed years down the road.
Choose a dresser that can double as a
changing table during the early years,
with pulls that a toddler or young
child can easily manage.
Keep flexibility first. With each
purchase, consider how the item will
serve your child’s needs over a span
of several years. This is true even in
the closet, where space once allocated
for tiny garments must eventually
give way to larger and bulkier attire.
One solution, for example, is a multifunctional closet organization system,
such as ClosetMaid’s ShelfTrack,
which can be altered as children grow
and their needs change. For younger
children, maximize closet space by
utilizing three levels of wire shelving
for clothing. As they get older, reconfigure the design by adjusting shelving
or adding baskets and shoe racks.
Make the most of accessories.
Establish a neutral palette that
can change to reflect your child’s
personality as they grow. Change up
bedding and other decorative items.
Dress up cubbies and storage spaces
with pops of color using handy fabric
drawers, which can be removed at
cleaning time. On the walls, avoid the
cost of repainting to match each new
look by using temporary adornments,
such as decals that peel away.
