Ellie Armand– Plans to attend Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business
Well, I suppose all good things must come to an end, and so this appears to be the end of high
school (for me, at least). Since there are some things I just can't take with me, I leave the following: Ashley Lewellyn – I leave you the power to get jokes, especially those like the ones told by
Mr. Cox. Priestess, Little Africa, 119, and Voodoo – You know who you are. :D I leave you the
power to win state. FFA Members – I leave you the knowledge and power to solve the stache's
technology issues. (Remember: File-Print) I also leave you some of my knowledge of crops. The
Track Team – I leave you the smarts necessary to fake a 400, along with this advice: It only
worked once. I also give you the ability to leave space between people. Enough said. One lucky
member of the class of 2012 – I leave you full use of my locker. Please, you can have it. Chayla
Cox – I leave you four inches of my height. Lol. I would if I could, anyway. Jennifer Gilly – I
leave to you the tune button on the radio and the skills necessary to obtain your driver's license.
Use it wisely. Will – I know you're only in fifth grade, but I'll write this for you anyway. I leave
you my asparagus (terms on that one to be determined), the ability to avoid mowing through said
asparagus and/or getting the lawn mower stuck, my amazing hide-and-go-seek skills, use of the
computer, and since you seem so insistent on taking over my room (and even have a countdown
going), I guess I leave you that, too, but I'm taking the TV. :~) Lexie – I leave you my vinyl-lined
picnic blankie, control of the thermostat (but not until I move out), our massive collection of Barbie dolls, the cardboard box house we played in when we were kids (if Mom didn't throw it out,
and she probably did), the skills and ingenuity necessary to play Burbrink-style baseball, use of my
FFA scarf, and the portal to an alternate universe (didn't know that was mine, did ya!?). On another note, I leave you a cookie. Amy
Burbrink – You go to Jennings County, but oh well. You're still my sister (sort of). I leave you all the great memories of our childhood, some of my crops judging skills (the rest stay at SD), and permission to call my cell phone whenever. :) Olivia Smith – I leave
you the stage area and the skills to get a driver's license. Mrs. Rawlings – I leave you the ability to know when students are “pulling
your leg.” All current and future SDHS students – I leave you with a smile, some brainpower, the ability to conquer the competition
(sometimes), and advise you that senioritis will hit you. Be prepared.

The Class of 2011,
What makes you so unique? As individuals—you are strong-wiled; whether you’ve used that “will
power” for achieving your goals or used it against me or “the man,” you had that will-power honed and
ready to use.
As a class, you are “tight.” In a way, you’re like siblings, you might fuss and feud with one another occasionally but if anyone else bothers you—watch out!—the whole flock of you goes into defense
mode…..and you are sooooo cute. You’re cute when you are racing Kleenex cars; you are cute when you
are roaming the halls and get caught; you’re cute when you get all excited about playing a game or going
to the game to cheer on your friends!
You have made me laugh a bazillion times more than frustrated me. So many of you have shown
me your “quirky” side and even that was fun! I will miss the heated political discussions, the crazy yearbook eating/working sessions, the creative stories, the smiles, the hugs, the projects and the PowerPoint's. I will miss you and how you, as a class, have been leaders for our school.
I have always declared to the world how lucky I was to be a teacher at South Decatur; where
students are (99.9% of the time) perfectly wonderful. With the Class of 2011, I not only feel lucky, I
feel blessed.
I hope God blesses your lives as much as he has blessed mine with your presence.

I would like to take this opportunity to say congratulations and good luck to the class of 2011. It has
been a real pleasure being your class sponsor. No
matter what the event was, your class always represented. Whether it was finding cars for homecoming pep sessions or a location for prom, the class of
2011 never wanted to fail. Thank you for your time,
dedication and a few laughs along the way. Take
care and good luck in all of your future endeavors!

Eric Post is my cousin. When he was little, he
loved watching the Jungle Book. For some
reason, he always called Mohgli "Boppy." He
would watch this over and over and knew every

very loving child. I am proud to say that Eric

The 2011 Lilly Endowment Scholarship was awarded to South Decatur Senior, Ann Gilly. There were ..seniors from
Greensburg, North Decatur, and South
Decatur who competed for this award.
The first part consisted application and a
blind timed essay. Then, the selection
committee narrowed down the competition from ...to five. Three of the five finalists were from South Decatur: Ellie Armand, Ann Gilly, and Devon Hudson. The
finalists are automatically given the scholarship amount of $1,500. The next challenge for these seniors was to have an interview and give a presentation of anything they wanted. Then on April 1, Ann
got the phone call of her award.
Congratulations to Ellie Armand
for being the South Decatur Spring
poster winner! According to Mr.
Jameson, the Community Action Coalition wanted to have something
different than just students who play
sports. So, Mr. Jameson brought
the idea to the staff and Mrs. Hudson said that we needed to honor
Ellie and all that she has accomplished in high school and FFA.
Mr. Jameson noted, “In the future I would like to honor students
who make wise choices that are in
other clubs and organizations. It is
never easy to select students because here at South we have several, several kids who are deserving.”
Q: What were your first thoughts when
you found out about your achievement?
Ann: “Well, my first thought was ‘omg
cry.’ So I cried. A lot. Then I realized that I
didn’t have to pay for college. Then I cried
some more. Then I ran around and my
friends came over and we cried some
more.”
The Lilly Scholarship covers full
tuition to any college in Indiana.
Ann plans to attend Franklin College in the fall to major in journalism.
Q: How did you feel when you
found out about the poster?
Ellie: “I was kind of surprised. I’m
not really an athlete, and I’m not a
peer helper, so I assumed the honor
would probably go to someone else.”
Q: Was the photo shoot fun?
Ellie: “It was really neat. Usually, all
the posters are of football and basketball players, so I expected the
other two schools to send baseball
and softball players, but when I got
to the photo shoot, there were two
other FFA members– both girls.”
CONGRATS,
Class of 2011!
You are an
amazing group
of people.
Go out into the
world and make
us proud!
Brigadier General Carr with West Point cadet Hudson
Awards—-who doesn’t like to receive awards? Monday, May 23rd,
South’s soon-to-be-graduates’ hard work was rewarded with medals, certificates and money. Over $550,000 was awarded that night (and that does not
include the numerous scholarships that were privately awarded by individual
schools!)
All graduates should be proud of their accomplishments and of the Class
of 2011 because as a group, they have registered some incredible achievements.
Devon Glenn Hudson, the son of Karen and Don Hudson, has an achievement worth mentioning. Hudson has earned a place in South Decatur history,
not only because he is the class valedictorian, but because he has been offered
and accepted an appointment at West Point Academy, which is an educational
opportunity worth $202,000.
As impressive as that is (and being asked to attend West Point IS VERY
impressive!) what is also very “cool” is who gave Hudson his appointment—
Brigadier General Cory Carr. You may ask, “Who’s that?” Well, if you
watched the news the night that U.S. soldiers captured and killed Osama Bin
Laden, then you saw Brig. General Carr sitting at a computer next to President Obama, with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Secretary of State
Hilary Clinton. Brig. General Carr is a very big deal to the military intelligence of our country. Maybe someday, it might be General Hudson who is
advising the President about the best way to protect this nation.

Why the Cougar fans no longer have stands!
“Eventually, we will get new bleachers,” said
South Decatur Jr.-Sr. High School Principal Jim Jameson, with an emphasis on the word—EVENTUALLY.
Bleachers that have held thousands of screaming
South Decatur supporters over the last 30-plus years exist
no more.. The long standing seats for
Siebel field were
removed during the week of April 18th with the announcer's tower being the last piece of the familiar structure to
be demolished, ironically on April 22nd, Good Friday.
Most of next year's players and this year's administration see nothing 'good' about the entire situation.
First, the bleachers' structural integrity no longer met
code requirements, and according to Jameson, the insurance carrier would only cover bleachers that did. “Two
and a half years ago, a structural engineering company –
one that works with Conseco and such-- said the bleachers could be made structurally safe enough to have them
insured if we braced the underneath structure. We did
that and the insurance was good for awhile,” said Jameson.
The bracing was a temporary fix. If the project
referendum had passed last year, getting new bleachers
would be a mute point because money was included in
that budget for the new bleachers. No budget---no bleachers.
Jameson said he understood that people were
perplexed as to why bleacher were removed now, since
they'd been used during the football season. “The seats
needed to go to protect the corporation from a lawsuit,”
said Jameson. He explained that since the bleachers were
not insured, if someone were to get hurt, the corporation
would be responsible. He added that the problem extended to other groups, like Youth Football and/ or walking
groups, who might sit on the bleachers not knowing they
were dangerous. If those people were hurt, then the corporation could be held liable.
That explains why the bleachers were taken
down; why isn't a new set going up this summer?
“The bleachers for our school will cost approximately
half a million dollars,” said Jameson. According to him,
that will only cover the bleachers themselves, not the
foundation that will support the structures.
“What's the plan for getting new bleachers in
place?”
According to Jameson, the administration is
looking into various options for obtaining monies to purchase the bleachers, but his concerns also involve getting
the community involved in setting the foundation now, so
when the bleachers do come, South is already prepared to
install them immediately
Next year’s football players, Ritchison, England, Ewing are
wondering just where the bleachers went and where will their
fans sit during next seasons’s games.
Jameson has been conferring with a variety of people who
are involved one way or another with the football field and
they have a new plan. First, home seating will be on the
west side of the field, so Cougar fans are not squinting into
the sun. The visitors side will keep a small concession
stand, while the new home side will utilize a part of the
existing Morton building as their new 'family-friendly' concession area. “I've been to other schools where the concessions area is concrete or black top and people don't have
trouble getting around on the rocks or when it rains. Lots of
schools serve brats or pulled-pork---meal type items for
their fans, making the whole ball game experience more of
a family fun night out,” explained Jameson, who envisions
the same for South.
A portion of the Morton building might also be
refurbished to provide a place for the Cougar ball team to
'huddle' during half-time rather than walk up to the Ag shop
for their half-time coaching. “Of course, the opposition will
still walk to the locker rooms for their half-time meeting,”said Jameson.
Again, one might ask, “So, what's the plan?”
Jameson said South's fans will need to wait and see what
the corporation does to obtain the bleachers, but in the
meantime, he would like to start a “Stands for the Fans”
Foundation fund, to which people can contribute time, talent, tools, and of course, cash for the concrete pads that
must be poured before any bleachers can be erected. Cash
and checks can be sent to the school, earmarked “Stands
for the Fans” or Bleacher Project. Those who want to help
in other ways-- digging out the areas, framing the pads,
pouring the concrete, or spearheading projects that will
raise the capital for this project--contact Jim Jameson or
Willard Rice, SD's athletic director.
That's the plans for the stands!
