WELCOME TO KHUDIRAM BOSE CENTRAL COLLEGE Principal s Address Dr. Subir Kumar Dutta Principal Khudiram Bose Central College (Earlier Central College) has completed 121 years of its existence. This is indeed a special occasion in the long span of an institution that began its career in the last decade of 19th century and is now striving to reach new heights in this era of globalization, which allows existence of private institutions besides government or semi government institutions. The college since its inception made some remarkable contribution to the society for the purpose of freedom ghting movement of the country. Now we have a rich past, a glorious present and a bright future.Khudiram Bose Central College is marching ahead with its motto of self reliance and providing quality education to all, irrespective of caste, creed, religion, economic status or physical health. In order to ful l this objective, many developmental programmes were initiated during the preceding years keeping in tune with the changing scenario of education. We believe in academic excellence of students and our teachers are well versed in the latest teaching methodologies to facilitate the students through their three years of under graduate learning. The various departments of the college arrange di erent seminars where subject experts come and interactive session are held. Even few departments of the college arranges student seminars and student classroom presentation in order to boost up their con dence level and personality development. The teachers, to enhance the interest of their students not only make classroom teaching interesting but also plan outdoor programmes like educational tours. I would also like to highlight the fact that we take into consideration the requirement of students beyond the scope of the syllabus. The Career and Placement cell and The Entry into Services Cell of the College play an active role in ensuring the students and making them familiar with jobs and career advancement through various training, workshops and campus interviews. Di erent institutions, reputed companies and expert resource persons come to the college and have a free interaction with the students. The members of the college o ce are always ready to extend their help to the students. The central library of the college is well equipped with large number of books and journals for the use of students. There is a big reading room where students can sit and study. Besides, almost all departments of the college also have their own library wherefrom the students are also bene ted. The college is also very much concerned about security of the students. Fire security device and CCTV have been installed in di erent parts of the college. The college is not only keen about academic performance of a student but is also dedicated to ensure development of the humane qualities of a student. Service to society is not only enhanced but diligently and religiously practiced in this college. The NCC and NSS units of this college cater to this objective. Students learn to shoulder responsibility through community service and this helps them to grow as members of the society. Apart from academics, Sports is another area where the college ensures maximum students participation. The students under the e cient sports committee of the college not only participate but also secure winners and runners up trophy in various competition held at university, district, state and national levels. The college is also the study centre of Post Graduate under Directorate of Distance Education of Vidyasagar University. It is worthwhile to mention that in the year 2013, the college celebrated the closing ceremony of 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. On this occasion the college organised a seminar and published a book entitled Bigyan Bhabnei Swami Vivekananda . The inspiring thoughts of this prophet of modern spiritual renaissance are more relevant today than ever before. His electrifying message of the divinity of man for peace and harmony emerges out of his own realisation. Though the best is still to be achieved. Page : 01 Page : 02 PRINCIPAL KHUDIRAM BOSE (1853 1929) HIGHLIGHTS OF THE COLLEGE Founder Of This College Location of the college. CU and UGC a liated and NAAC Accredited. Principal Khudiram Bose, the founder of Central College and School, was born on 12 May, 1853, at Sadipur village at Burdwan district in West Bengal. He was born to Late Gorachand Bose and Late Nistarini Bose. He came of a middle class family and hence had to ght against poverty in his student days. He read in Bangla Pathshala of his village. He also studied at Tamluk Hamilton High School and at Free Church Institution (Du College). He was in uenced by three sons of Bengal: Revolutionary Kalicharan Banerjee helped him to develop his faculties of reason; Brahmananda Keshab Chandra Sen moulded his religious beliefs and infused in him a sense of love for truth, and Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar showed him the path of self reliance. These human qualities were re ected in the thoughts and actions of our founder. Principal Bose along with Rastraguru Surendranath served as the senior Professor of Mental and Moral Science and Logic in Metropolitan Institution (now Vidyasagar College) under Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar. On the death of Vidyasagar, Khudiram Bose founded the Universal Institution (Central Institution) on 3rd June, 1893. Inspired by the spirit of self reliance, our founder rejected any extraneous nancial help for the sustenance of the institution. The college was founded in 1894. Our founder was a man of independent spirit. Those were the days of Boycott and Swadeshi movements . It was not easy to conduct meetings without defying the British Government. Our founder allowed his college building to be used for this purpose. He allowed his pupil, Acharya P.C. Roy, to conduct Swadeshi Exhibition in his college. Central College was the place for freedom ghters Bagha Jatin ( also an alumni of the institution), Baidyanath Biswas, Nirmalkanti Roy and others. Central College compound was the place for Rakhi Bandhan Ceremony. Our founder was one of the founder members of the Council of the National University, established with a national spirit after the movement against partition of Bengal in 1905. He passed away on 15 December, 1929. his life was one of the strenuous exertion and ceaseless ght for the good cause which he had taken up . Professor Tarak Nath Sen, an illustrious teacher of English, who taught at Presidency College (now Presidency University) said, The Late Principal Khudiram Bose, founder of the institution, belonged to a generation, now past, of large hearted men who lived after large ideals. The lessons he had learnt in the conduct of life from the great Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, he applied to a noble social use in founding of this institution in 1893 . Academic Session: The academic session of the college is from July to June of next year. Classes for 1st year begin as per CU norms. Classes for 2nd and 3rd Year begin as per CU rules, within one week of the completion of theoretical examination under Calcutta University. Students of 2nd and 3rd Year have to take provisional admission before their classes begin. Aims and Objectives: The college always keeps in focus its motto self reliance . Every e ort is taken by all the members of this college to enhance quality. The basic aim of our college is to provide the students with a need to face challenges in the job market. Every e ort is taken to provide career guidance to the students. However, in its stride to equip the students with a sound career the college also builds humane consciousness in the students. Page : 06 TEACHING METHODOLOGY The teachers of this college take a deep interest in the academic orientation of the students. The basic objective behind teaching methodology is to maximise student performance. The teachers strictly follow the academic calendar prepared by them at the beginning of each academic year. There is a very healthy co-ordination between the teachers and the students and this facilitates learning. Another major advantage that helps the students is teacher accessibility beyond the boundary of the classroom - - the students are most welcome to come to the teachers any time, within the college hours, with their problems. The teachers of this college gives priority to update its students by collecting data and information from internet and also insists the students to browse important internet sites related to their studies. Besides the teachers also have adopted following modern methods of making the classroom teaching more interesting and interactive. The methods are as follows: Audio- Visual Presentation: In order to make the learning process more interesting and interactive the classes are often conducted by the projector. For example, the department of History in the last academic session started a new process of learning by making their students presentation with the help of projector. Their theme was A Journey Through the Ages The classes of the department of Journalism and Mass Communication , Geography and IT part of Commerce are also being conducted with the help of computers. These departments have separate computer laboratories. Educational Tours: Film Screening: Another new mode of teaching adopted by few departments of the college is to show lms to the students relevant and based on the theme related to their course. For example, the department of English organises Classic English Movies; the department of JMC prepares and shows documentary and short lms. Last academic session the department of Political Science organised a lm screening Madras Café for their students. This movie was also watched by the di erent departments of the college. In showing the movie, the JMC department assisted the Political Science department. Another example of inter departmental programmes. Dramatised Version of Teaching: The department of Hindi has adopted new process of teaching and learning in the way of drama enactment on a piece or novel based on and from their syllabus. For example, in recent past a drama was enacted by the department students on the piece named Bholaram ka Jeev . The drama was enacted on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda s 150th Birth Anniversary Programme. Wall Magazine: These magazines are for students. The students are assisted and insisted by the teachers to enhance their creative mind and talents in form of these magazines where they are required to search materials from internet, showcase thought provoking write-ups and information. Di erent department have their own wall magazines. The names of the wall magazines are as follows: Department of Education ---- EDUCATUM As per CU norms the Geography department of the college conducts an excursion tours every year for their students as part of their course requirement. But the department of Political Science and Education also started conducting educational tours since 2012. Last academic session, the department of History visited Indian Museum as part of educational tour. The department of English visited Birla Museum and Technology. The department of Political Science visited Bidhan Sabha and the department was joined by JMC, Hindi and Education departments of the college. Also another educational tour was jointly conducted by the department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Political Science to Birla Museum. Apart from Geography, these tours are sometimes totally nancially supported by college and sometimes they are self- nanced tours by the departments. Inter departmental Programmes: In order to enrich the campus life and develop quality teaching among the students, the departments like Journalism and Mass Communication and Political Science organised last year an extension lecture on Communication Theory . The lecture was delivered by Prof. Sourav Gupta, Koratput University, Odisha. Besides the educational tours are also glaring examples of inter departmental networking and collaborative programmes and provides the scope of knowing each other well and thereby building a sense of community participation among them. Page : 07 Page : 08 INFRASTRUCTURAL AND OTHER FACILITIES IN THE COLLEGE DIFFERENT CELLS & ITS ACTIVITIES Library : The college library tries to provide information to the students for developing their sphere of knowledge. The collection of books in the library is in keeping with the subjects of humanities, science and commerce taught in the college. The total collection of library books is around 17,500 with the assistance of UGC, W.B. Govt. Book Grant and College Fund. There are books on various subjects of humanities, science, commerce and general areas. Books on di erent competitive exams are also in the library. The students who have Honours can issue up to ve books and students in the General course can issue up to three books at a time. No other college provides this facility to its students. Kanyashree Prakalpa: Monetary grant under Kanyashree Prakalpa of the Govt. of West Bengal is o ered to girl students who ful l the requisite criteria. Forms may be obtained from college o ce. Prof. Anamika Nandy, Department of History, is in charge of this unit. Tutorial Classes: Each department has Tutorial Classes for the students. These classes are very important as the students get maximum scope to clear their doubts regarding the subject. The teachers are also able to measure the academic performance of the students and help the students to getter a better grasp of the subjects. Remedial Coaching Classes: The weak students belonging to the SC/ST/OBC category can avail the bene ts of extra class under the Merged Scheme of UGC under XIIth Plan. These remedial classes give the students an opportunity to improve their area of study. Prof. Raja Ghosh and Prof. Priyanka Sengupta, Department of Geography jointly look after these classes. Parent Teachers Meet: The college arranges Parents Teachers meeting once a year for all the students. This meeting is held with a certain objective to make the parents/guardians aware of the performance of their wards. As the college believes in steady progress this meeting gives ample scope to the parents/guardians to put forward their views regarding betterment of the college. Frank interaction between parents/guardians and teachers and the principal help their wards to perform better. The department also holds parent teachers meet half yearly after the unit test exam of the college. Counseling: The college arranges counseling for students who cannot handle the pressure of their syllabus. Through counselling the student is able to overcome his/her problem. & Fee Concession: There is a system of fee concession for needy but academically promising students. There is a committee to consider the issue of fee concession to needy and meritorious students. Students Health Home: Khudiram Bose Central College is an institutional member of Students Health Home. The college makes arrangement for the students to avail themselves of modern and free treatment facilities in the students health home at heavily subsidized rate. The nearest centre is S.A.Jaipuria College. The students get medical advice in di erent elds ---- Eye, Dental, ENT, Skin, Orthopedics, Neurology, Cardiology, Psychiatry, Gynecology, Medicine and Surgery. The health home is open from 4.00 p.m to 6.00 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 3.00 p.m to 5.00 p.m on Saturday. Canteen: The college has a subsidized canteen that o ers a wide range of food. The college ensures that the quality of food is never compromised. Students Union: The college has a democratically elected students body. The students union and the college administration share a very happy relation and the union plays a major role in maintaining healthy atmosphere in the college. The suggestion and opinions of the students union are instrumental to the development of the college. This body also plays a key role in ensuring that students maintain discipline in the college. The students union of this college plays a very positive role in serving the community. KBCC Students Union has its own slogan Union by the students, for the students, of the students . The Students Union also organises Freshers Welcome, Saraswati Puja, Annual Social Function and Annual Sports. College Websites: The college has its own website ---- www.kbccollege.com. All important notices are published in the website for the bene t of the students. Note: the College is under renovation and new construction. So in the coming academic session the college will have its own auditorium, new rooms, toilets, girls common room and the college also plans to open new subjects in the coming years. Page : 09 Page : 10 DIFFERENT WINGS OF COLLEGE NSS: The college has its own NSS unit. The NSS (National Service Scheme) is under the Ministry of Youth A airs & Sports. Govt.of India. Students becoming members of this unit are given the opportunity to participate in various in- station and out- station programmes. These programmes help the students not only to develop their personality but also serve the needy sections of the society. The certi cate that a student gets after the end of each programme will help them both in their higher studies and the job sector. Prof. Raja Ghosh is the programme o cer of this unit. NCC: The college started its own N.C.C Unit in 2003. The N.C.C unit of this college is a liated to 19 Bengal Battalion, Unit 2. Classes are held at Fort William generally on Sunday morning. Band C Certi cates are issued to the N.C.C Cadets. C Certi cate exams are held at the end of second and third year respectively. C Certi cate holders get priority in Army Sector Interview Board. Dr. Subrata Kumar Mallik is in charge of this unit. Games and Sports: The College organises a sports meet generally at the end of winter season. Students as well as teaching and non- teaching sta of the college actively participate in the sports meet. Prizes and Certi cates are given to rst, second and third position holders. The college hosted the Xth and XIth Non Government Inter College Athletics and Football Tournament of Kolkata District sponsored by Govt. Of West Bengal. In this regard, the important achievements of the college are: The college won Runners UP Friendship Trophy, 2013 organised by Kolkata Police for di erent colleges of West Bengal. The students received the trophy from the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata. In CU Athelics event held on 11.11.14 and 12.11.14, Bronze medal won by Ramashis Rabi Das; College secured Fourth position in 400 Mtr and Fourth position in relay Race. Runa Das and Dibakar Sarkar, Students of the college participated in the Cycle Rally event held on the occasion of World Aids Day on 1.12.14. Participated in Inter College Cricket Tournament held on 13..12.14 The College participated in Inter- collegiate cricket (Men) Tournament held on 18.2.15. The Annual Sports of the college held on 10.01.15. In Non- Non- Government Athlete Meet, Calcutta University, the College won One Gold Medal in Ladies Javlin Throw, Two Silver Medals in 400 Mtr run and Discus Throw events for Girls, Two Bronze Medals in 500 Mtr run and Javlin Throw for Boys. IMPORTANT EVENTS 15 December: Khudiram Bose Memorial Lecture: In the last academic session, Scientist Dr. D.P. Duari, Director of Birla Planetarium, Kolkata delivered a mesmerizing lecture on The Cosmic World . 14 September: Hindi Divas: The students of the Hindi department under the guidance of Prof. Shubhra Upadhyaya, Deptt. Of Hindi, arranged Hindi Divas on 14 September every year. The whole college acknowledges this e ort of the students and joins the department to honour our national language. 21 February: Bhasa Divas: The department of Bengali under the guidance of Prof. Subrata Kumar Mallik celebrates Bhasa Divas on 21 February. 9th May: Rabindra Jayanti (Pachishe Baisakh) : The students of Bengali Department arranges a programme on 9th May on account of celibrating Rabindra Jayanti under the guidance of Dr, Subrata Kr. Mallik. The department also organises a programme on Baishe Sraban . Charubala Chaudhuri Memorial Prize: Female Topper of the college. This prize is being contributed by Sri Asok Chudhuri, President, Governing Body of the college Nalinibala Dutta Memorial Prize: Topper in Commerce Stream. This prize is being contributed by Dr. Subir Kumar Dutta, Principal of the college. Srikant Upadhyaya Memorial Prize: Topper in Hindi Part III Exam. This prize is contributed by Dr. Shubhra Upadhyaya, Deptt. Of Hindi of the college. Pandit Ramagya Prasad Dwevedi Memorial Prize: Female Topper in General Stream. This prize is contributed by Prof. Shilpa Nandy, Deptt. Of Political Science of the college. Dilip Kumar Nandy Memorial Prize: Highest Marks Securing in CU Part II Exams in Political Science. SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS 12 January: National Youth Day: 12, January , Swami Vivekananda s birthday is recognised as National Youth Day. The NSS unit of the college under the guidance of Prof. Raja Ghosh, Deptt. Of Geography, organises a programme to pay homage to the great spirit. 15 August & 26 January: Independence Day & Republic Day: On both these days, ag hoisting takes place under the guidance of Dr. Subrata Kumar Mallik, NCC unit incharge. The teachers and students gather to celebrate these days of pride and honour. 31 July: Munshi Premchand Memorial Lecture: on 31 July, the department of Hindi arranges Prem Chand Smriti Vyakhyanmala to celebrate Munshi Premchand Jayanti. This college is one of those rare colleges that celebrate this day. In the last academic session, Prof. Soma Bandopadhyaya, Deptt. Of Hindi of Calcutta University delivered a lecture on the short stories and novels of Munshi PremChand with special reference to Godaan. Her talk also included contemporary Bengali writers too. 15 December: Annual Prize Distribution Day: It has been a convention of the college since 2012 that on the occasion of Khudiram Bose Memorial Lecture day, the college also arranges Annual Prize Distribution Day. A committee has been there to look after the matter. Prizes, medals and certi cates are given to the students of BA/B.SC/B.Com stream both in Honours and General Category. Candidates Securing highest marks in Cu exam (Part I, Part II, Part III) are awarded prizes along with medals and certi cates. A host of special awards are also given which are contributed by the President, Governing Body, Principal and some teachers of the college in loving memories of their parents and grand parents. Page : 13 Seminars are organised in the college and the students have a very positive role in organization of such seminars and workshops. These seminars and workshops are conducted by di erent departments of the college and experts from di erent universities, colleges and also other sectors are invited so that students get an exposure in diverse areas of their subject. Seminars within the departments are also held where students present papers before the whole class. These intra departmental seminars are arranged by the concerned departments so that the students learn how to do research work. Apart from seminars and workshops teacher exchange programmes are arranged by di erent departments. Teachers from other colleges come occasionally to take classes and vice versa. This gives the students an opportunity to know the teaching strategy practiced in other colleges. In the recent past the following seminars and workshops were held in the college: Department of History organised a Two days State Level Seminar sponsored by UGC on Historical Consciousness in Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century Bengal: Some Re ections . The College follows evaluation pattern as stated by Calcutta University. As per C.U. norms the College conducts two tests for all the three years. The Mid Term Test is held generally in early November. The College Test for third year students is held in January. The second year Students will sit for College Test in February and the First year students will appear for College test in March. All papers (Hons. & Elective) for both Mid Term and College Test will be of 100 marks. However, Compulsory English, MIL will be 50 marks each. ENVS of 100 marks will be evaluated in the third year. If the college has to arrange supplementary college test it will only be done against payment of fine of Rs. 300/It is mandatory that students appear in both the exams, failing which they will not be allowed to sit for C.U. exam. It is discretion of Calcutta University to change the syllabus and the pattern of evaluation. Students will be notified well in advance about any change with regard to syllabus evaluation. The teachers also give class tests and assignment as and when they think these necessary. Tests throughout the academic year help the students to prepare themselves better. Page : 24 RULES AND REGULATIONS TEACHING STAFF Attendance The minimum percentage for appearing as a collegiate student in the CU exam is 75% of total number of classes held in that academic session. Principal Dr. Subir Kumar Dutta, M.Com, L. L. B., M.Phil, AICWA, Ph.D Students must ensure that they have acquired the required percentage of attendance. Calcutta University may condone shortage of percentage, but not less than 60% on payment of a fee, to the University in special cases. The college is very particular about the attendance percentage and expects students to attend classes. ARTS Students who do not have the required attendance will not be allowed to sit for Mid -term Test and College test. In any case if student fails to attend classes for seven days continuously without any information to the college, his name will be cancelled and college may take appropriate actions. In case of medical emergency if any student does not attend classes regularly the student or the guardian is liable to inform or provide necessary document to the college at the time of his / her illness. Further no such medical documents will be entertained. After every three months, attendance record of the students are published and if any students are asked to bring his/her guardian due to short percentage and if he / she does not do so , his/her name will be cancelled and college authority may take strict action. Library The College library is open during the College hours. Books are issued for ten days are may be re-issued for another ten days, if there is no demand. A fine of 50 paise per book per day has to be paid if there is any delay in returning books after time period is over. Cases of mutilation if any, must be brought immediately to the notice of the Librarian otherwise the last borrower will be held responsible.
