A Message From the City Librarian

Summer may be here, but the learning doesn’t stop. The Milwaukee Public Library is here to support
you as you encourage your children to continue learning while on break from school. We do this not
only through the information in our books and databases, but by providing enriching and engaging
classes and programs. While these programs are designed to be fun and entertaining, they serve a
much more important purpose – to help build a child’s background knowledge. Background knowledge, or prior knowledge, is simply everything you already know about a subject. Studies have
shown the greater amount of background knowledge children have, the easier it will be for them to
learn about new things, and their likelihood of succeeding in school increases.
Some easy ways to increase your child’s background knowledge are:
1) Make reading a part of their day
2) Check out books on a wide variety of topics
3) Attend library programs and then talk about them with your child
4) Complete the summer reading program and earn coupons to visit museums, the zoo, or see a play.
The library is your destination for lifelong learning, helping you and your family read, learn, and connect with books,
programs and community partners.

Discover library resources for you and your family. We’ll
provide Cousins Subs, chips and water.

Raising a Super Reader - May 4
Reading for pleasure is a lifelong habit that begins in
childhood. This fun and informative session will provide
tips and tricks for getting your child to read more and feel
like a Super Reader.

Summer Reading for Adults - Jun 1
It’s not just for kids! Play Book Bingo for a chance to win
prizes. We’ll give you a head start with ideas for crossing
off categories on your bingo card like ‘one word title’ and
‘blue cover.’ Even if you don’t play bingo with us, you’ll
leave with a list of great books to read this summer –
ideas including mysteries, history and much more.
Money Smart. Life Smart - Jul 6
Get your teen set up for lifelong financial success! Local
financial literacy experts from Make a Difference, WI will
be at the library to give you ideas on how to teach your
teen about budgeting, saving, banking, credit and more.
Career Exploration: A Parent’s Guide - Aug 3
Learn about tools and techniques you can use to help
your child explore careers. Great for parents of Teens
and Tweens who are making important decisions as they
select high school classes and plan for post-secondary
education.

Be a Super Reader This Summer!
Be a Super Reader!
For kids ages 12 and younger.
Kids, Dr. Brain Drain is at it again! He’s just waiting for you to not read this summer so
he can slowly steal some of your brain power to use for himself to be the smartest villain
around. The only way to truly defeat him is to read, listen to someone else read, or read to
someone else. Yes, that’s right, reading defeats Dr. Brain Drain – so read, read,
read all summer long.
• Visit any Milwaukee Public Library to officially sign-up beginning May 16.
Use your reading folder to track the minutes you read or are read to.
• Receive a yard sign to let the city know you are a Super Reader and are
reading to defeat Dr. Brain Drain!
• As you read this summer you can earn food coupons, free admission to
fun places around town, and a free book for your home library.
• Join us each week for special events and classes featuring
magicians, live animals, and more!

Buddy Week!
Special Story Times June 13 – 18
Buddy, the Super Reader dog, needs someone to read to him to defeat
Dr. Brain Drain, just like our youngest children need someone to read to
them. At all our story times this week we’ll be celebrating our reading
buddies!
An art activity and snack will be provided.
Children are invited to bring their favorite
stuffed animal reading buddy. Sign-up for
the Super Reader program will be available

the snakes, turtles, lizards, frogs,
and salamanders of Wisconsin and
learn about the many adaptations
these creatures have to live in our
environment. They’ll also learn about
habitats by venturing to these areas
in search of the creatures.

Learn about the principles of air and
pressure as a soda bottle is crushed
before your very eyes. The Mad
Scientist will make a hot air balloon
out of a dry cleaning bag and
demonstrate how a parachute works.
See an incredible exothermic
reaction and watch a hovercraft in
action.

Jun 25 - Bugs, Bugs, Bugs
Listen to stories, sing songs and do finger plays all about
bugs! There will also be a butterfly craft and bug games
to play.
Jul 2 - Ice Cream Parlor
Join us as we work at the ice cream parlor. Put on your
apron, roll up your sleeves and grab a scoop! Take turns
working the cash register, taking orders and cleaning up
the shop as we explore one of summer’s favorite spots.
Join us each Saturday morning from 10:30–11:30 am
in the story nook for imaginative play for families with
young children. Each program is designed as a fun
family outing that also incorporates development of early
literacy skills.
May 7 - Puppets, Stories, and Fun with Kathy Luck
Storyteller Kathy Luck presents a lively program of silly
stories and songs with her crazy puppet friends.
May 14 - Pet Parade
Gather your critters; it’s time for some fun! We will
use our bodies and imaginations to gallop like horses,
scamper like mice, “swim” our hands, and fly scarves like
birds—all the while developing motor skills, vocabulary,
imagination, and more.
May 21 - Post Office
Create a card, letter or package and take turns setting
up routes, delivering and receiving mail. Develop literacy
skills during this fun-filled, hands-on interactive hour of
stories and play.

Understanding and managing emotions can be complicated, but using music to explore and identify different

can be useful (and even fun)!
Jun 18 - Flower Shop
Practice helping out at the florist’s shop. Help customers, arrange flowers, run the cash register, and write up
orders. There is so much to do at our busy floral shop!

Jul 9 - Silly All Over
Catch a case of the giggles. Motor skills and self-control
get a workout with plenty of stop-and-go motions,
energy gets tapped with plenty of up-and-down, and
sense of humor gets a tickle with silly sounds, silly movements, finger plays, and fun. Hold onto your funny bone,
because you’re about to get Silly All Over!

Jul 23 - Fun with Food
Grab a book, have a listen, take a look. Listen to
stories that sound yummy, make a fruit kabob for your
little tummy. Looking forward to a fun filled day. Come
one, come all, hooray, hooray!
Jul 30 - Messy Art
Listen to a great story then create a fun project to take
home. Remember to wear your smock!
Aug 6 - Beach Days
Grab your beach ball, we’re going to the beach! Crabs
are scuttling, toes are wiggling, waves are crashing,
and the sun is shining. We’ll enjoy favorite songs and
dances, do an Octopus Hula, jump on a banana boat,
and then snuggle up and happily relax to gentle beach
sounds and songs.
Aug 13 - Camping
Go on a pretend nature hike, sing camp songs, and roast
marshmallows. Then we’ll pitch a tent and settle in for
some camp stories.
Aug 20 - Puppets, Stories, and Fun with Kathy Luck
Storyteller Kathy Luck presents a lively program of silly
stories and songs with her crazy puppet friends.
Aug 27 - Pete the Cat
Join us for fun with our friend “Pete the Cat.” After story
time, we will play games inspired by Pete’s adventures.

Movie and Book Signing!
Join Bay View Library and Boswell Books in celebrating the most awesome of super heroes: Captain America!
Come for popcorn, crafts and a showing of the movie, Captain America: The First Avenger on Wednesday, April 27
and return on May 5 to meet Matt Forbeck, the author of Marvel’s Captain America: The Ultimate Guide to The First
Avenger and take part in a book signing, trivia contest and other fun activities. Books will be for sale by Boswell
Books at the book signing. Costumes are encouraged! Captain America: The First Avenger is rated PG-13; children
12 and under must be accompanied by an adult or have a permission slip signed by a parent to attend.

The Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman.
If your family likes to read together, join us for the Bay View Family Book Club. This summer’s selection is The Book
Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman. The Book Scavenger is a book for book lovers, puzzle lovers, and treasure
hunters. In fact, to get you into the treasure hunting mood, we will hide copies of the book around the Bay View area,
starting in June. We will give hints each week to where they might be (first hint: have you ever noticed how many Little
Free Libraries there are in Bay View?) The hints will be published each week on the Milwaukee Public Library website
(MPL.org -on the “Your Branch @ MPL” blog) and on the official Book Scavenger website (bookscavenger.com). So
search for your own copy or check one out from the library and take part in a book discussion and activities based on
the book on August 15th.

presented by A.W.E. Artists Working in Education
A drop-in program designed for children in Grades K5-5, although older siblings are welcome. Each visit begins with
an A.W.E. artist reading aloud a story or two and then discussing the book or illustrator. Participants will then work
on imaginative art activities relevant to the book or artistic theme for the day. This is a great opportunity to be creative, try new techniques and have fun expressing your artistic point of view. Everyone gets to take home their creations. Families are encouraged to attend and make art together! This program is a collaboration with the Milwaukee
Public Library and Artists Working in Education, Inc. (A.W. E.) with support from The Greater Milwaukee Foundation,
Ruth Grotenrath and Schomer Lichtner Fund, MPS Parternship for the Arts and Humanities, as well as support of

MPL offers free continuing education child care provider workshops as Tier 1 or Tier 2 training, as
approved by the Wisconsin Registry. More information is available in person from the workshop
presenters. Please have your Registry ID number handy for submission. Registration required;

Registration opens about one month prior to the workshop, see below for exact dates. Adults only; no children, no

Being a nurturing caregiver is such an important part of teaching the youngest in your care. But when
should you start? How should you do it? Learn how to create the optimal environment for healthy brain
development. Find out how “secure attachment” and socialemotional development are the foundation for all of babies’ and
toddlers’ future learning. Explore ways to build intentional interactions into your day that foster language skills and are developmentally appropriate.

Infant and toddler teachers, join the preschool and school age
teachers in helping Milwaukee Public Library create a City of
Readers! Watch the mail for your Super Reader summer reading
program materials. Hang up your tracking posters and start reading! Your classroom or center is not automatically registered.
To register: If your kiddos are mobile (ages 6-12), bring them with
you to the library for some fun with books or our programs. Sign
up for Super Reader with the librarian while you are there! These
older children will earn individual prizes for enjoying books and
other reading activities while in your care. Use the poster to track
30 minutes of reading at a time. See the poster for more directions.
If your students are not mobile (infants through 5 year-olds), visit
your library at any convenient time to sign your class up! Keep
track on your poster how often you read to them, let them explore
books, and do rhyming and singing. You will earn up to 3 free
books for your classroom. More directions are on the poster.
To claim prizes: bring the poster in to your library. The librarian will
award prizes to any children ages 6-12 from your registered classroom. If you teach babies through 5 year-olds, you will choose
your free book from our wonderful collection. Don’t forget to bring your poster with you! These younger children
need not be present. Call (414) 286-3091 to ask questions or to receive more posters.
