The Thompson Emergency Shelter recently moved into a renovated Ellison Cottage, increasing their capacity to 24 children. The move allowed the Shelter to create a separate living area for eight infants and toddlers. d a d F d F C ( v baR t @ Boysville’s emergency shelter is the only shelter in the area to care for children birth to 17 years old. page 6/7 CAMPUS NEWS: Days of Caring Girl Scout Troop Volleyball Serves Up… v E v page 8 CONNELL CENTER NEWS a a s E s E s F E d R d F ( b R b a R v t a t b v R h ss E E h 8 h page 9 COMMUNITY NEWS page 10/11 Memorials page 12 Happy Gifts ( ( b R b R “By increasing our efforts, we are able to keep brothers and sisters together, “ said Lenna Baxter, Chief Executive Officer for Boysville. “Our expansion happened quicker than we expected and we are so excited to have it open.” With the expansion of the Shelter and the expansion of The Foster Care Program at Boysville, siblings are able to retain their bond and work on family issues together. Boysville is unique to Bexar County as it hosts a variety of programs to help children of all ages from birth through college. Children living at Boysville are taught independent living skills. Young adults who graduate from high school while living at Boysville receive financial and emotional support through college. “Boysville is here not only for children who are wards of the state, but who are in crisis” said Baxter. “We want to help children who truly need a home while their parents or guardians work out their personal issues — whether it is a substance abuse problem, spousal abuse, homelessness or even grandparents who can no longer care for their grandchild.” Boysville does not discriminate based on the ability to pay. Most parents or guardians who place their children at Boysville are unable to pay for services. In 2004, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services reported that Bexar County had almost 15,000 cases of abuse reported, with 7,730 confirmed for abuse and/ or neglect. Approximately 35 percent of the confirmed cases were children under the age of five. 2 5 contact us upcoming events JERRY & JACK RIDGEWAY THANKSGIVING DINNER November 18, 6:30 p.m. Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday season at Boysville, as we celebrate the Jerry & Jack Ridgeway Thanksgiving Dinner with special friends. Over 100 golfers enjoyed playing in the Heatwave Golf Tournament held at the Republic Golf Course on August 20, 2005. This event is put on each year by a group of hard-working volunteers and is headed up by Edward DeWees, III. DeWees has a special connection with Boysville, as his grandfather was one of the key community leaders who helped Boysville get started. Golfers were treated to a dinner the night be-“fore” the tournament. Johnny Canavan, prepared mouth-watering T-bone steaks with baked potatoes and all the fixings. The dinner held at the San Antonio Gun Club featured a silent and live auction. Music was provided by Daddy Rabbit. The Heatwave committee, comprised of Edward DeWees III, Mark Meador, Seth Bell, Robert Renner, Brooks Holzhausen, Aaron Bengoechea, Teresa Hackebeil, Johnny Canavan, Beth Reinhardt, Judy Jackson, William Galvan, and Collie Owens, is already working on next year’s event. We surpassed our goal and are extremely grateful for all who helped make this auction a record fund raising event for our children. e @ Now that fall is here, our children are back into a routine of attending school and participating in various activities. In addition to playing games and sports in our Chrysanthemum Gymnasium, our youth participate in football, basketball, dance, cheerleading and other extracurricular activities. Our six high school seniors are preparing for life after Boysville and are visiting colleges and trade schools with our Director of Transitional Living. C As our daily events continue, we are saddened by the loss of homes and life due to Hurricane Katrina and Rita. As a community, San Antonio has bonded together to aid those in need. At Boysville, we are beginning to see the children affected by this devastation — children who have lost their parents and guardians. 8 Our busiest and most fulfilling time is also one of the most distressing times at Boysville. The holidays are approaching and can be a time of traumatic memories for our children. We work very hard to make the holidays a happy memory through celebration in food, music, parties and presents. Many generous volunteers and donors make this possible each year. Please help us create a memorable holiday for our children. The staff, children and board of Boysville want to wish you a very happy holiday season! Lenna J. Baxter CEO today 4 d boysville’s 39th wildest auction sets record! YEE-HAW!! That just about sums up Boysville’s 39th Annual Wildest Auction in the West. Almost 700 guests enjoyed a wild west party at the Alzafar Shrine Temple on August 26. The party included great food from the RK Group, a trick card artist, a silent auction, high-rolling live auction and a great concert by Charlie Robison. a Honorary Chair Red McCombs took a turn as auctioneer while offering “Lunch With Red McCombs” during the live auction. Red generated so much excitement that the rest of the night, the air buzzed with energy. E Bill Taylor, KENS-5 weatherman and Dan Kruse, auctioneer kept the crowd entertained as they auctioned off over $100,000 worth of live auction items. They even came up with their own wild card item to end the night, bringing the grand total raised for Boysville to a record $205,000. Charlie Robison followed the live auction with a fantastic show of pure Texas music. Boysville would like to thank Charlie Robison, Bill Taylor and Dan Kruse for donating their professional services for the children of Boysville. Several of the volunteers helped with sanding and refinishing the beds, dressers and bedside tables needed in the newly expanded shelter. girl scout troop ready to roll! Boysville’s Girl Scout Troop #2608 is entering into its second year and is off to a great start. Currently there are two Brownies and five Junior Girl Scouts enrolled in the troop. Cindy Priesmeyer, leader, and Rosalind Forte, co-leader, held the first meeting on September 10. The Troop had a successful bake sale (the girls made cookies with the help of their cottage families ) at the September Board Dinner held in the gym at Boysville. The money will be use to take the girls on field trips and the troop can purchase badges throughout the year. The Troop would like to thank American Legion Auxiliary Post 667 in Universal City for providing uniforms, including sashes, pins, and Girl Scout books for each girl. Meetings are held monthly. The older girls have expressed an interest in having an older Girl Scout troop (middle to high school ages) and are in need of a leader. Anyone who would like to assist with the program, please contact Cindy Priesmeyer @ 862-2261. today 7 precious minds, new connections Boysville received a grant from the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation to continue its community-based program, Precious Minds Parenting Initiative, with one change — the name. Cindy Priesmeyer, director of the newly-named Precious Minds, New Connections, says the name changed at the request of the Kronkosky foundation — to make it recognizable throughout the community. Precious Minds, New Connections works with community partners to bring early childhood education to parents with children under the age of four as well as expectant parents. Courses are offered in various facilities throughout the city. All parents and providers from all economic backgrounds are encouraged to participate in the six-week course. The Early Years teaches growth and behavior in young children; learning through play; promoting positive behavior and helping children build strong brains. The Born to Learn program is done on an individual basis in the participant’s home. Parent educators work with expectant parents and parents of newborn on issues of infant development and growth. The program targets new parents and/or parents of young children and discusses new ways to interact with their child — teaching parents that they are their child’s first and best teacher. Precious Minds, New Connections at Boysville welcomes three new parent educators to join our team — Vicky Rine, Mayra Elizondo and Femi O’Grady. For more information on Precious Minds, New Connections, contact Cindy Priesmeyer at 210-945-2839. pizza night with the boysville board members ber, and oard mem n Cottage. b e, rk u B Catherine enjoyed pizza at Sie ., Melissa S team spirit volleyball serves up Boysville’s Co-ed Volleyball team is traveling the recreational club circuit and is improving every week. Each year, Mr. Davis spends countless hours making all of these delicious goodies. Boysville residents Frank G., Robert B., and Vincent H., along with auxiliary and board member Lillie Putman helped Davis with the jams and jellies. The money raised from the sales of the jams and jellies supports the Boysville Connell Center’s 4-H program. aquatic learning b R experience The Pre-Jr 4-H members learned about springs, wells and aquatic life at the Texas State Aquatic Nature Center in San Marcos, Texas. They learned the importance of our water system. With help, the children identified the different aquatic insects and other animals. Riding in a glass bottom boat, the children were surprised when a scuba diver swam under the boat. the gathering of goat producers 4th annual meeting The Gathering of Goat Producers held their 4th annual meeting on the Boysville campus in September. Frank G., Robert B. and Vincent H., along with Syl Burkemper, farm manager, attended many of the sessions to learn about the different types of forages and the importance of forages. County agents from South Texas attended meetings. Afterwards, Rene Mosqueda treated everyone to his famous tequila lime goat prepared on a roasting spit. The agents helped prepare different entrees all made from goat including — goat burgers, ribs and bacon. today community news N lennar homes make dreams come true! t e Over fifty employees from Lennar Corporation transformed Hunter Cottage into “a dream come true” for Gordon and his cottage mates. It was like a scene from the hit TV show, Extreme Home Makeover. People were bustling around with bags, tools and energy. Lennar had broken into teams and assigned each team a room. The employees were excited about the project, and dedicated to making their kids’ rooms the best. @ From a baseball fantasy to cowboy heaven, each child’s room was transformed into a unique design. One Lennar employee even constructed handmade, custom cowboy headboards. The thought and detail that went into each room were amazing. The soccer/football room even had a soccer goal. Lennar also supplied new bathroom towels, shower curtains and rugs. ( C In addition to decorating all of the bedrooms, Lennar created an entertainment room, with all of the bells and whistles. Shelli Beck led her team in the entertainment room putting together an entertainment center that would hold a new TV, Play Station 2, DVD player, video games and movies. In the corner of the entertainment room, Lennar set up a brand new desk complete with a new computer and printer. 8 After only fours hours, Lennar was ready to welcome home the residents of Hunter Cottage. The boys’ eyes widened as they walked in to their new and improved home. Each resident was speechless at the sight of his room. Following the grand tour of the cottage, Lennar had ordered pizza for the employees and the boys. Gordon, a Hunter Cottage resident, walked by his case manager, looked up and said, “It’s like a dream.” Boysville would like to thank Lennar Homes for their generosity. 9 gone fishin’ For 35 years, the Towne & Country Optimist Club, along with the Metropolitan Association of Bass Clubs have taken the Boysville children fishing at Potters Creek Park on Canyon Lake. This year, over 50 boaters came out early to enjoy breakfast and spend time with the Boysville children at the lake. The children were paired with their “anglers” and then sent out to compete for prizes for the heaviest fish, most fish caught and the most total weight. However, for the children and volunteers, it was not the prize that mattered. Ned Gates, director of recreational programs, said that the volunteers get as much if not more pleasure out of this event as the children. “It’s really amazing to see the boats pull up to pick up the children,” said Gates. “There is a good core group of volunteers who return each year and the children bond with the same people each year. They want to go with the same volunteers each time.” Gates said the children are extremely appreciative of the volunteers taking time out of their weekend to spend a day fishing. The fishing tournament becomes one of the most anticipated events of summer for the children. After fishing all morning, everyone enjoyed barbeque prepared by the Dukes family. Prizes were awarded at a ceremony held during an Optimist meeting.
