For all my fellow expats that have been
living and working in Milan, a warm
welcome back, as for the newcomers,
congratulations on the beginning of your
new adventure! By now, many of you are
settling in - either into your new home,
new job or getting ready for the start of
new courses. The typical Milanese frenzy
that has been put on hold for the month
of August has started again and will
continue with full force until the next big
holiday in December. We hope to help get
readers back into speed with the useful
information and services offered within
these pages and on www.EasyCircle.it
Many of our readers will be able to relate
to Karen Rigatti’s article, part 2 of The
Stages of Cultural Adaptation. Living
abroad is definitely “not for the faint at
heart.” Read more on p. 13.
Also as central Italy struggles to put
back the pieces after the devastating
earthquake, we have published various
fundraising initiatives that can help
those who have been affected. Over
700 restaurants are making Spaghetti
Amatriciana, a recipe dating back to the
18th century, to help raise funds (p. 3).
Another notable initiative by The American
School of Milan (p. 2) takes place on
Sept. 9th. Please join them for a bowl of
Amatrice’s signature dish or donate €2

Bring a large pot of well salted
water to a boil.
In a fry pan, cook the guanciale or
pancetta, olive oil and peperoncino.
Sauté over high heat for a few
minutes and simmer with white
wine until reduced. Then remove
the guanciale or pancetta from the
fry pan and set aside.
Pour tomatoes in the greased fry pan
and cook for a few minutes, add salt
and pepper to taste. Remove the
peperoncino and add the guanciale
or pancetta to finish cooking.
When the pasta is cooked al dente
put the grated pecorino cheese
over it and let it melt. Then add the
tomato sauce.

The recent tragedy in central Italy has again highlighted the nation’s
shortcomings in regards to building safety standards and the immense
challenge it faces to protect its beautiful but vulnerable historic buildings,
and those who inhabit them. Most of Italy’s buildings were in fact erected
prior to the existence of building codes, often with poor quality materials,
and are therefore too weak to withstand strong seismic activity. Despite
many devastating earthquakes over the last few decades, non-compliant
buildings are still estimated at around 70%.
Building regulations are not always applied or respected, even in the event
of restoration work or new buildings. The supreme court recently upheld
the sentences against experts responsible for the renovation of student
accommodation in L’Aquila, the collapse of which killed eight people
in 2009. According to the latest news reports, the school in Amatrice,
which partially collapsed in Wednesday's quake, despite having been the
subject of earthquake proofing only a few years ago, has now also been
seized.
Buildings that correctly adhere to standards will likely suffer damage and
crack but should not completely disintegrate, as was witnessed in this
most recent earthquake.
Being the seismically active country that it is, and following yet another
disaster of its kind, greater measures are once again being called for.
The building code was in fact modified in 2008 and made provision
for the strengthening of important historical structures but this did not
unfortunately extend to smaller buildings.
The beauty of Italy lies also in its centuries-old buildings and its historic
hillside villages, just like Amatrice. It is also for this reason that foreigners
come from all over the world to experience Italy and even to purchase
properties here. When deciding to undertake such an investment, it is
necessary to evaluate more than just the aesthetic aspect and character
of the place. It is vital, and indeed a duty, to discover how safe the building
really is and if any additional works are required.
The aspects to investigate prior to the purchase of a property are indeed
numerous and a technical survey is essential to verify issues such as
the conformity of the property with planning regulations and cadastral
registrations, the state of maintenance of the systems, the soundness of
its structures and the area’s earthquake classification.
It is indeed at times like these that we realize, regulations and laws aside,
how the safety of the building is of utmost importance to protect the
investment and, more importantly, our lives. A serious and unavoidable
responsibility also to all those family members, friends or tenants, who
will at some point inhabit the property.
It is therefore extremely important to carry out an analysis of the structures
before proceeding with a purchase and, in the event of any issues, an
evaluation of any necessary works to provide adequate reinforcement
and protection.

“Adapting to an entirely new culture
is not for the faint of heart…”
In part one, we left off discussing stage two of the process of cultural
adjustment, in which you were experiencing full-blown culture shock
and all the frustrations and challenges that go with it. Again, this can
be the most difficult stage of adapting to a new culture and the time in
which it is most critical to identify and seek sources of support, ranging
from friends and family, to fellow ex-pats to professional counseling.
Stage Three: Adaptation
Now as you move toward stage three, you will slowly notice that your level of
frustration and your feelings of separateness are giving way to familiarity and
acceptance. After having spent significant time in your new culture, you are
likely beginning to resolve some of the conflicts you were experiencing. You are
regaining a sense of appreciation for the culture, similar to what you experienced
in the initial stages of adaptation, but now the appreciation is mixed with a
deeper meaning and understanding. In fact, feelings in this third stage are often
a mix of the feelings from the first two stages, and you are likely to find yourself
more at ease and more comfortable with the ways and values of this new culture.
You can also expect to feel less isolated and more integrated as you develop a
realistic understanding of the similarities and differences between your home
culture and the new one. You will have a clearer idea about what you like and
dislike between the two cultures and at this stage, many people start to move in
the direction of becoming bicultural, i.e., having or combining the attitudes and
customs of two cultures. You may find that you even prefer some aspects of the
new culture to your home culture!
As you gradually grow steadier on your new sea legs, you will likely find both
your sense of humor and your confidence returning. It’s getting easier to laugh
things off, and you’re better able to weather the high and low moments, realizing
you can once again take things in stride that recently had you unglued and
reduced to tears. This is big! Celebrate these moments and give yourself a
huge pat on the back!
Finally, since you have worked through the initial, emotional stages of cultural
adjustment, you are now ready to enter a stage of deeper learning. You might
start to question long-held assumptions about your own culture and about the
world. This can be both exciting and surprising, as you realize new truths about
yourself and the cultures and countries you’ve come to understand differently,
including your own.
Adapting to an entirely new culture is not for the faint of heart, and it’s important
to recognize and celebrate all the progress you’ve made. Keep going! In the
next and final part of the series, we will talk more about biculturalism and reverse
culture shock, for those who find themselves moving back to their home country
after living abroad.

ATM transportation fees
Taxis in Milan
In Milan you may have noticed it's difficult to
hail a taxi. Most available taxis are found either
at taxis stands, usually near major metro stops
or they are reserved in advance. The meter
will start ticking once the taxi is heading in
your direction for pick up (not once you get
into the taxi). There are set fare to and from the
airports. Malpensa airport to the city center will
cost Euro 90, whereas from Linate Airport will
cost on average Euro 35 depending on where
you need to go.

There are different types of tickets for
traveling on Milan’s ATM transportation
network. Here are the most common fares:
Urban Ticket: (1.50€) valid for 90 mins.
One Day Ticket: (4.50€) valid for 24 hours.
Two Day Ticket: (8.25€) valid for 48 hours.
Weekly 2x6 Pass: (10€) Allows two rides per
day for 6 days in a week.
Carnet of 10 Standard Tickets: (13.80€)
Allows ten 90-minute rides.
