Welcome From SPE President
Dear SPE Regional Student Development Summit Participants,
Robert F. Kennedy, better than anyone, summed up why the future of the planet depends on you:
“The future is not a gift: It is an achievement. Every generation helps to make its own future. This
is the essential challenge of the present.” Can I add that I think the future of SPE also depends
on you? Here’s why: Every day in 2014, the E&P industry is teaming up to produce approximately
92 million b/d and 350 bcf/d. What an achievement. This energy raises living standards and fuels
human progress—but not for all 7.2 billion citizens of the world, considering 1.3 billion still have
no access to electricity and 2.4 billion still use biomass for cooking. So, there’s still much work for
energy producers like us to do—even in 2014. Fast forward to 2040—the world’s population will
be approximately 9 billion, with oil and gas still key and adding up to more than 60% of the global
energy mix. By the way, which other business has such a long-term perspective?
The E&P industry must adapt and evolve at an ever-faster SPEed as new barrels must be found and
produced by navigating E&P success in 3C. Community focus: More than ever, we depend on the
trust of the local communities where we operate. This trust must be earned through relentless focus
on HSSE-SR and sustainable operations. Competitiveness: As costs have risen across the board, our
industry must respond by incrementally and steadily improving every aspect of the E&P business.
Collaboration: Though E&P in many ways is a very competitive business, there are more and more
areas where competition will have to take a back seat to collaboration as more value is created that
way. SPE is the best example of this with its 124,000 members on a mission to share. However, SPE
must also evolve and adapt to make sure we always have great answers to every member asking
WIIFM (what’s in it for me?).
SPE can learn a lot from you—in fact, we need you to relentlessly improve and transform SPE
into SPE 2.0 through innovation so that SPE can help the industry become E&P 2.0. That you
communicate, work, connect, solve problems and form networks differently is a great advantage.
The sense of purpose you have the right to feel is immense. You help solve the greatest challenge
on the planet: affordable energy for all, produced in a sustainable manner. This energy lifts living
standards and fuels human progress, and your unique and valuable perspectives will help SPE
become SPE 2.0. We can then execute our mission to share more quickly and efficiently as you
continue to excel as the rising tide that lifts all the boats!
Thank you!

General Information
Photography In Sessions
Safety
SPE technical sessions are protected by copyright
laws. Attendees are not permitted to record (via
phone, camera, or any other recording device) the
presentations made during this conference.
One of the key components to the success of the SPE
Regional Student Development Summit is the safety of
our attendees and presenters. Due to the popularity of
some session topics, it is possible for overcrowding to
occur in a session or meeting room. Should this occur, we
must comply with policies regarding room capacity and
limit admittance to a room that is at capacity. Please make
plans to arrive early for sessions that you have a strong
interest in attending. In the event of an emergency, SPE
staff and/or university staff will provide summit attendees
with any necessary information and instructions.
Speaker Check-In
Speakers to arrive 30 minutes prior to their presentations.
Upon arrival, speakers check-in will be outside The Senate
Hall. From there, they will be shown to the room.
Notice to Attendees
Emergency Procedures and Fire Evacuation Advice
A venue representative will give a fire and safety
emergency briefing for all attendees on Tuesday,
11 November at 0830. Attendees are required to be in
the room promptly for the fire/safety procedure.
All attendees are required to wear their name badge and
badge holder at all times.
Use of a badge by a person not named on the badge is
grounds for confiscation. If you lose your badge, please
return to registration to obtain a replacement.
An alert signal to a fire is given by an intermittent sounding
of the fire alarm. Continuous sounding of the fire alarm is an
instruction to evacuate the summit/university immediately
by using the nearest fire exits indicated on the floorplan on
page 6.
Mobile/Cell Phone Policy
As a courtesy to the speakers and your fellow attendees,
mobile phones should be turned off during meetings
and sessions.
Guests with Disabilities
Alcohol Policy
We take pride in ensuring that our meetings and events
are accessible to all attendees with special needs. All
buildings in Nazarbayev University are equipped with
elevators. Attendees needing special arrangements
should contact our staff at registration or headquarters.
We recognise the legitimate serving of alcoholic beverages
in the process of conducting business and social activities.
We also recognise that the use and consumption of
alcohol carries with it the requirement for all attendees to
consume those beverages responsibly and in keeping with
our professional code of ethics and conduct. We strongly
oppose the abuse and misuse of alcohol.
