Beatty, LMSW A certain horror I remember growing up was my father listening to talk radio. BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. NEWSRADIO 88…..And now the news….. It would be played at decibels much greater than necessary that I was sure was intended to rip me out of my blissful state of REM like a bucket of water thrown on me on the coldest day in January. I loathed it!! “Why” I would question, “would he do that?!!!!” No, not wake me with the radio super loud. I knew why he did that. I was a terrible ‘waker-uper’ as a kid. I was cranky and slow to get moving on school days. My constant question was “why would he (or anyone for that matter) listen to NEWSRADIO 88! He never veered from that station. It was, from my point of view, the most annoying program on the planet. The droning voice of the announcer did nothing but talk about depressing and boring news all day every day. I prayed for the day that I would have something that blocked by ears from that monotony. I imagined other children around the country tortured every morning as fathers around America pressed their pants and listened to TalkNews Radio. Now travel through time with me. I sit in my car and decide what is my folly today. Steve Harvey’s morning show? An AM station, a Compact Disc? I decide to flip the channels of my XM radio. I hear the ways that Nadya Suliamon (Octomom) sold her story (and more) to provide for her fourteen children, heard the re-broadcast of the Knicks win, the story of the rescue of those poor girls held in captivity and the diamond heist in Belgium. I also brushed past Andrew Dice Clay (comedian) relive in crude detail a date he had, rocked out with some 1980’s hair bands, heard numerous announcers pontificate and pundits exert their views. I listened to commercials selling products that masqueraded as news and information (I really thought I was learning the secret to combating belly fat!), smiled through a Disney song, and flipped past a Korean language station. I pressed the scan button again. So here we are, faced with options for listening that surpasses any of our expectation. Beyond race, class, culture, and political affiliation, radio, internet and television stations now respond to every personality, interest, age, educational level and condition. I simultaneously love and loathe the choices before me. I envy my parents for having limited choices that they easily accepted. They became engrossed in the news and information on one station and never looked for more. They were never enticed to flip to something more entertaining. I think that I would have preferred the experience that was nice and simple. Instead, I’m left feeling like I need a crash course in selective entertainment. I’m frustrated with all of these options. Sometimes overwhelmed, sometimes thrilled, sometimes bored I flip and search to find what suits my mood. Educating, entertaining, or enlightening. Sometimes I just don’t know. If my mood changes, I need to start the process over again. (Perhaps look at the CD’s for a selection or listen to what is stored on the Hard Disk Drive or on the AM/FM channels. Perhaps I listen to nothing at all.) Instead, I turn on XM Channel 115 also known as CNN, the “World Leader in News”. My son groans from the back seat, picks up headphones and asks me to put on a DVD so he can watch a movie in the back. I tell him to look out the window instead. He asks me ‘why?’. He’s not confused at all about what he wants to do during this ride. It’s nice and simple for him. I am sure he is thinking that I am torturing him, just like all the other kids in America and their boring parents. Benefits in Brief The Retiree Division is now on the Web.
