PRESIDENT’S
PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Hello NMA Members,
February already, two months into the new year and a lot is
happening with the NMA. Our new DVDs have arrived and will
on display at the February meeting. We have four new sets from
L&L that cover a wide spectrum of entertainment. The
collection includes Marc DeSouza’s Master Works of
Conjuring, The Creative Magic of Pavel, Richard Osterlind’s
No Camera Tricks, and The World-Renowned Magic of Paul
Potassy. There are twelve DVDs in the order featuring silk,
rope, coin, bill, mentalism and prediction, egg bag, silk,
penetration, humor, and many other types of effects. Go to
www.llpub.com to read more about each DVD.
We offer a tip of the top hat to member Henry Holava for his
contributions to the newsletter. Henry’s original effects have
appeared in numerous publications including Volume Eight of
the Tarbell Course in Magic, Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk
Magic, Linking Ring, M.U.M., and many others. In addition,
Henry’s Treasure Chest routine was a sell-out at two
conventions.
February is a great month to clean out your magic closets for
things that you do not use so that you can convert your magic
gold to cash at our March auction. The auction format will be
published in the March newsletter.
Kostya Kimlat has confirmed the May 13 date for his
lecture. I had the privilege of meeting Kostya and watching him
perform at the 2003 Magic Live sponsored by MAGIC
Magazine in Las Vegas. Among his many accolades, Kostya is
the youngest performer to have ever appeared on the cover of
MAGIC Magazine. He is youthful and dynamic and has earned
lofty accolades for his lectures. The Magic Castle newsletter has
referred to him as a “master who has been making a national
impact on the art of close-up." Paul Richards of Elmwood
Magic has said, “without a doubt one of the best lectures we've
ever hosted! It looks like this is the lecture to make sure that
NMA members bring their friends to.
The February meeting will start promptly at 7:30 on February
11. Come early to have dinner before the meeting. Chef Ruben
has a bountiful menu of $10.00 specials on Thursday nights.
There is no better way to make the drudgery of cooking and
cleanup disappear than to treat yourself to dinner before the
meeting.
The February meeting will have a special surprise for
everyone to enjoy after we finish the business portion of the
meeting.

Balloon from a Dove Pan An idea from Henry Holava
Whenever I use a balloon for a trick (i.e. sword through the neck, needle through balloon, etc), I produce the balloon from a
dove pan.
Effect: The magician introduces an un-inflated balloon, but finds it too difficult to blow up. He places the balloon in a large pan and tells the
audience that they can help him blow the balloon up by magic. The magician places a cover on the pan and holding it between his hands,
tells the audience that on the count of three to blow as hard as they can. On the count of three, everyone blows. As they do, the cover on
the pan slowly rises until the cover is bouncing on a large inflated balloon that over fills the pan.
Preparation: Inflate a balloon (make sure to use the same colored balloons) so that it fills the bottom load of a large dove pan with half of
the balloon showing above the pan (Fig. 1). Place the cover on the load pan and slowly press the load into the cover until it is set with a
click. You might break a few balloons until you learn just how much to inflate the balloon without breaking it.
Fig. 1
Fig. 2
Method: To produce the balloon; place the cover on the dove pan containing the un-inflated balloon but do not set the load. Hold the pan
between both hands with your thumbs on the cover. When everyone blows, press down to set the load. There will be a slight click but no
one will notice because they are all too busy blowing. With both thumbs pressing down on the cover, slowly allow the cover to rise as the
balloon comes out of the pan (Fig. 2). The illusion is perfect that the balloon is being inflated by magic.

Cyril the Sorcerer Attends Master Class with Jeff McBride
I am a relatively new member to the NMA so I am not sure how many folks will recognize my name.
In any case, I thought to share some news about my trip to Vegas last week. I enrolled in the Master
Class at McBride’s Magic & Mystery School. Rest assured the term “Master” in “Master Class”, at
least in my case, referred the teachers, not me as a student! Studying with Jeff McBride and other
masters was a wondrous, life-altering experience for me as a person and as a magician. We learned
some effects but focused more on presentation, stagecraft, music, and even business skills. We also
went backstage with Mac King and Lance Burton for questions and answers following their shows.
Timing worked out for us to participate in Jeff McBride’s monthly Wonderground Night Club
experience. In addition to belly dancing, body art, balloon twisting and other amusements, the
evening featured close up, stage and walk around performances. The list of attendees and performers
included Charlotte Pendragon, Arian Black, The Amazing Jonathon and a host of lesser known but
equally astonishing individuals. Information on the school if at http://www.magicalwisdom.com/. I
highly recommend this extended week-long Master Class, or even the shorter 3 day classes.
