DESERT MASHIE NEWS November 2014 “5 Iron” www.desertmashie.org FROM THE PRESIDENT: Hello Fellow Mashies, Well, we survived Thanksgiving, and are well on our way to the close of another year for which we are truly Blessed and very Thankful. While we’re on the subject, let’s not forget Christmas which is less than 2 weeks away. In case you don’t read this entire Newsletter, I want to make sure you know I’m wishing you a very . 1 . I extend a sincere and to all of our members and friends who came out and supported us at our 66th Annual Golf Tournament last month (Nov. 22 & 23). There were 74 golfers in the tournament, several of whom came from out of town. But, what I am so very thankful for is that we had so many Desert Mashie members who came out and supported their event. Also, I appreciate the fact that the members brought their family members to participate and enjoy this event. The results of this tournament have been sent out, but in case you missed that e-mail, the results will be posted again later in this newsletter. As George Colebrook had promised, we were treated to some outstanding talent on Saturday afternoon and evening. First, after golf on Saturday afternoon we grooved to the music of the Kenny G’s Project Band on the patio. The music was superb, and the tempo was just right for many of our participants to get their “groove on”. Then on Saturday night, the Black Theatre Troupe “pulled out all stops” and treated us to an outstanding mystery entitled “Who Killed Lion Iron”. They included some of our members’ names as characters in the play which made it more interesting and kept us on the edges of our seats. to George and the Tournament Committee for a very enjoyable Annual and some spectacular entertainment. I would be remiss not to mention, and give a standing ovation , to the one and only Leonard Walker for his Master of Ceremonies skills. In true Leonard Walker style, he kept us in stitches with his stories, 2 entertained, and wanting more. done it without you”. Leonard, “we could not have Our last tournament for this year will be on New Year’s Eve at Tuscany Falls Golf Course in Goodyear. There are still some open slots in the tournament, so come on out and play with us for the last time in 2014. My, has this year gone by fast! It seems like just a couple of months ago I was writing to you about our “last tournament” for 2013. In addition to the New Year’s Eve Golf Tournament, we will have our Annual New Year’s Eve Awards Dinner/Dance. It’s at this event that the awards from the Club Championship, as well as the awards from the New Year’s Eve Tournament will be presented. . Also, dinner will be served, and we will dance the night away at this New Year’s Eve gala. We have had a magnificent time at this event in the past, and I’m sure this year’s event will be no exception and will be just as enjoyable as the previous. If you haven’t submitted your RSVP to Carolyn Suttles yet, please do so right away so she can reserve a spot for you, and submit your meal selection. In case you have misplaced the details of these two events, also included in this newsletter is a copy of the flyer for the New Year’s Eve Golf Tournament, as well as information on the New Year’s Eve Awards Dinner/Dance. Just a gentle reminder – IT’S MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL TIME – All golfers who do not renew their membership before December 30 will be deleted from the GHIN System. If you haven’t renewed your membership already, you can renew by logging into the website (www.desertmashie.org), or by completing the hard copy application. Annual membership dues are $100.00 for golfers, and $55.00 for non-golfers. Also, any new members who join now will enjoy membership privileges for the remainder of this year thru December 15 of next year. New members can complete membership registration in the website, or by completing the application within the website. Also, the last page of this newsletter is an application. Last but certainly not least, we will be moving our Annual Golf Tournament back to May next year as it had been for many years. The 67th Desert Mashie Annual will be held May 2 & 3, 2015. So, mark your calendars and HOLD THOSE DATES. We tried to get the Mother’s Day weekend, but it had been taken by another WSGA club. However, I think May 2 & 3 will work out better, especially for people who like to celebrate Mother’s Day with their families. 3 From my family: We wish you and your family and friends a Very Merry Christmas & a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year. Respectfully yours, Leroy H. James President 4 Below is a list of the Desert Mashie tournaments for next year. Lauren has received a golf scholarship from New Mexico State University where she will be attending in the Fall of 2015 . She will graduate from Mountain Point High School in May 2015. Lauren finished in the top 10 in the State of AZ during the State High School Golf Championships, resulting in her earning an All-State title. Jackie Booth, Women’s Head Golf Coach at NMSU, feels that in Lauren they found 'The Diamond in the Rough' from Arizona.” 31 I have a suggestion for you if you are finding it difficult to get in the Christmas spirit. Play some Christmas Carols on your music machine (CD player, record player, cassette player, 8-track (am I dating myself ) Or, more current, you might be able to find a cable music station on your TV that is playing Christmas Carols. Whenever I hear Christmas Carols during the Holidays, I immediately get in the Christmas Spirit. While I’m on the subject of Christmas carols, below is a fun carol which is one of my favorites. During the Holidays, whenever there are enough family members and friends at our house, we sing and perform this song. Each person is assigned (to become or perform) one of the characters of the 12 Days of Christmas. We form a large circle, and while singing the song (at the top of our lungs – I might add), whenever we get to each character, the assigned person hops into the circle, and performs his/her interpretation of their character’s function, then the next person/character hops into the circle and performs his/her character’s function, and so on, and so on. This is lots of fun, and gets everyone involved. If there are more than 12 people, 2 or 3 people can be assigned the same character, and perform it together whenever it’s their turn. If you have time, enough people, and have the urge, try it. Since it’s repetitive, it gets a little crazy, but trust me, IT IS FUN! Example: If you are the 7 Swans a Swimming, you would jump into the circle and pretend you are a swan-a-swimming every time this part of the song is sung, then the 6 Geese a Laying hops into the circle, and pretends you are a goose-a-laying. Now do you get the idea??? I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. 32 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS 1 On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: A Partridge in a Pear Tree 2 3 On the third day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree 4 5 7 9 On the fifth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the seventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Seven Swans a Swimming Six Geese a Laying Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the ninth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Nine Ladies Dancing Eight Maids a Milking Seven Swans a Swimming Six Geese a Laying Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the second day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the fourth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree 6 On the sixth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Six Geese a Laying Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree 8 On the eighth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Eight Maids a Milking Seven Swans a Swimming Six Geese a Laying Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree 10 On the tenth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Ten Lords a Leaping Nine Ladies Dancing Eight Maids a Milking Seven Swans a Swimming Six Geese a Laying Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree 33 11 On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Eleven Pipers Piping Ten Lords a Leaping Nine Ladies Dancing Eight Maids a Milking Seven Swans a Swimming Six Geese a Laying Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree 12 On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 12 Drummers Drumming Eleven Pipers Piping Ten Lords a Leaping Nine Ladies Dancing Eight Maids a Milking Seven Swans a Swimming Six Geese a Laying Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree 34 SOME CARTOONS FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT. 1. 1. 1. 35 1. 1. 1. 36 1. GOLF JOKE A multimillionaire bachelor goes to his club to play golf with two friends. Not knowing who would be joining them, they walk to the first tee. As they finish teeing off, a tall, beautiful, raven-haired woman asks if she can join them. Although the bachelor thinks this is going to slow down their play, he agrees. The woman tees up a ball and, without a practice swing, smacks it straight down the middle. This goes on all day and she finishes even par for the round, beating all the men. They invite her back the next week. They have a great time, and she shoots the same score. The bachelor thinks to himself, "This is the girl of my dreams!" So he asks her out on a date. They go out, find they have much in common, and have a great evening. They make another golf date, during which she shoots two under and gives a clinic in shotmaking. The millionaire is now convinced that they are meant to be together. He invites her back to his apartment, where they talk for hours. Everything is progressing smoothly, so he invites her to his bedroom. Their passions run riot, but she doesn't let things go too far and he drives her home. This pattern continues for a month: Great golf, great dates, but nights of abbreviated passion. The bachelor can't take it anymore. "I know the time we spent on the golf course and in my apartment is wonderful. And even though we haven't been fully intimate, I know that I love you, you love me, and that you are the girl I want to marry!" "Darling," she says, "I have something to tell you. I cannot hide it anymore. I am a man!" His mouth drops open, his face turns red, he begins to shake. She's con vinced he's going to have a heart attack, or worse, when finally, in a blind rage, he shouts, "And all this time you've been playing from the red tees?" 37 Here’s some GOLF TRIVIA and SOME FACTS Did you know that…… I'll always remember the day I broke ninety. I had a few beers in the clubhouse and was so excited I forgot to play the back nine. There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball. Which one of you golfers is the rabbit? Golf Swindler: While sitting at a table in the clubhouse after a game, Padraig remarked to a fellow club member', I'm not going to play golf with Jim Lawler anymore. He cheats.' 'Why do you say that?' asked his friend. 'Well, he found his lost ball two feet from the green', replied Padraig indignantly. 'That's entirely possible', commented his friend. 'Not when I had his golf ball in my pocket', retorted Padraig with finality. . 38 “GOLF Get Connected Ball Between the TIP- OF THE DAY Get Connected - Ball Between the Arms Drill Creating a connection between the turn of your shoulders and swing of your arms promotes a more efficient golf swing with less moving parts. Most amateurs' swings have too many moving parts and as a result develop a great deal of inconsistency. To improve the connection in your swing I recommend The Ball Drill. Find a ball about the size of a slightly deflated volleyball and pinch the ball between both biceps while also having it contact your chest. Once the ball is in place, grip the club and begin to make short swings. Gradually work your way up to a full-length swing while swinging slowly. The key to performing the ball drill is that the ball must maintain contact with all three points while you are swinging. The length of your back swing may feel shorter and more restricted. Connecting the motion of the body and arms will eliminate unnecessary moving parts in your golf swing and make it easier to repeat. Golf Tip of the Day by Andy Hilts “The only time my prayers are never answered is on the golf course.” — Billy Graham GOLF QUOTE “Golf is the loneliest sport. You're completely alone with every conceivable opportunity to defeat yourself. Golf brings out your assets and liabilities as a person. The longer you play, the more certain you are that a man's performance is the outward manifestation of who, in his heart, he really thinks he is. .” —- Hale Irwin 39 GHIN Internet POSTING The following instructions are how to post your score online at home (not the golf course): Go to: www.ghin.com Go to: “Post on Line” Input your GHIN # and Last Name 1.
