Ryotsu-Ogawa is a small village of fishers and farmers. The area flourished by the marine
transportation business during the Edo period (1601 - 1868). Tsugami-shima Island with its
red-arched crossing bridge and Himezaki Lighthouse are places to visit. Many locals are
enthusiasts of wood-block print making. Their artwork can be found in multiple locations.

The Buddhist priest Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren Buddhist sect, was brought to a
run-down shack here in 1271. During his stay, he wrote The Kaimokusho (The Opening of the
Eyes), one of his most important scriptures. To honor the priest, Mikata Tajima, a historic Sado
gold mine developer donated and built Komponji Temple in the early 17th century. The
vestiges of financial power in those days can be seen on the grounds.

#2 Minami-sen Line
Daiganji Temple
3 min. from Yokkamachi bus stop
Daiganji Temple is one of the few temples that belong to the Ji Buddhist sect. It is said that this
site was a place where the Buddhist monk Yugyo Shonin conducted missionary work in 1355.
Its Amida Buddha wooden statue (a prefecturally-designated cultural property) was crafted
during the Kamakura period (1192 – 1333). The temple also retains a statue of Higiri Jizo
Bodhisattva, which is said to make wishes come true on predetermined dates.

Daizen Shrine
0 min. from Daizen-jinja mae bus stop Contact: Mano Tourist Information Office Phone: 0259-55-3589
The shrine is dedicated to the Buddhist priest Daizenbo, who helped Ashimmaru escape from
Sado after he took revenge on the samurai officials who had executed his father. The shrine’s
classic, thatched-roof noh stage is a prefectural folk cultural asset, and local people occasionally perform noh plays here. It is worth observing the graceful stage itself that perfectly matches
its surrounding scenery.

C
The Tokugawa shogunate designated the Sado Gold Mine as its domain in 1601 when he seized
power, and Sado’s Magistrate Office was built in 1603 to maintain the island and the mining
business. The office building fell victim to fire multiple times. The present building was rebuilt
in 2000 based on excavated evidence and drawings from 1859.
#6 Nanaura Kaigan Line
Nagate Misaki Point
5 min. from Tachibana-nagate misaki bus stop
Visitors can enjoy a beautiful sunset view from the point that branches out into the Sea of
Japan. The surrounding areas are part of a marine park zone and its brilliant clear water is best
suited for leisurely seashore strolls. The sunset glow reflecting over the water can only be
enjoyed on Sado Island.
⑮
#6 Nanaura Kaigan Line
Meotoriwa Rocks
This spot is one of the most scenic places along the Nanaura Coastal Line. Meoto, meaning
“husband and wife”, was the name given to the pair because of their resemblance to an
affectionate embrace. This is one the best spots to see lovely sunset views. Their beautiful
silhouette stands out with a backdrop of red skies and water with the setting sun.
#7 Maehama Line
Jogahama Beach
This artificial shore reclamation is composed of clear water and white sand, equipped with
facilities such as shower rooms, dressing rooms and toilets. An accommodation facility,
Sunrise Jogahama and Akadomari Jogahama natural onsen hot spring facilities are adjacently

Kyogoku Tamekane, an influential court poet in the 13 century, was exiled to Sado for his
political involvement in the imperial succession. He is said to have visited this temple when he
arrived in and departed from Sado. One legend says that the prayer he made here granted his
wish to return to Kyoto. The temple enshrines a Kannon deity statue and other artifacts
associated with his dream having become true.

Monument for Nichiren Shonin’s Daimoku on the sea
2 min. from Akadomari chugaku mae bus stop
Buddhist priest Nichiren received a pardon in 1274. Before leaving Sado he spent his final
night in Maura. A series of Buddhist sutra appeared on the surface of the sea when he placed
the palms of his hands together as he faced the sunrise the next morning. The sacred monument
was erected to commemorate this event. Another legend says he stayed overnight in a cave and
left the beach with help from locals.
Chokokuji Temple
0 min. from Hase bus stop
Sado’s Chokokuji Temple is said to have been modeled after Chokokuji Temple in Yamato,
Nara Prefecture. A record indicates that Zeami, creator of the noh stage drama art form, stopped
by this temple in the 15th century. Beautiful peony flowers colorfully decorate the temple in
early May. The temple retains historic treasures, including three Kannon statues made in the
early 9th century (nationally designated important cultural properties) and other valuables.
#14 Iwakubi Line
0 min. from Nyuzaki bus stop Contact: Sado Tourism Association Phone: 0259-27-5000
Nyuzaki Beach stretches a length of sandy areas and attracts many young people for summer
activities because of its brilliant clear water. Enjoy sea bathing, fishing and camping.
Matsugasaki Area
0 min. from Hongyoji bus stop
Contact: SADO Kouryu Network Phone: 0259-67-7995
Matsugasaki is located at the closest place to the mainland, and its naturally-developed sandbank
Konose Point was used in the past for crossing the sea. Old-fashioned houses called Tsushi-nikai,
classic houses whose second floor ceilings were intentionally constructed relatively low, can be seen in
the area. Houses display their own yago signs, which indicate names of houses rather than their owners,
inciting visitors’ interests. (For guided tours, contact SADO Kouryu Network Phone: 0259-67-7995)

In 1946, a British Royal Air Force aircraft made an emergency landing here. The 2013 movie
Tobe-Dakota! (English title: Fly, Dakota Fly!) was based on this true story. Local people have
long preserved the warmth of the human feelings of helping people in hardship, and the concept
still resonates today.

Sado Taiko Centre offers hands-on activities and other programs of Japanese taiko drumming
by the internationally renowned, long-established Kodo that is based on Sado Island. The hall
has an original hand-made taiko made of a 600 hundred-year old Japanese zelkova tree.
A phenomenon of many circular-shaped wave erosions due to pounding waves over tens of
millions of years can be found on the bedrock on the Hiranezaki shore. The site is designated
for special protection by the national government. Hiranezaki is also known for hot springs
continually flowing from the offshore seabed.

The temple is located in the deepest corners of Shukunegi Village. It belongs to the Ji sect,
which is the same sect as the Daiganji Temple in the Mano area. The grave of Shibata Shuzo
(1920-1959), a Shukunegi-native geologist who studied Dutch and drew the first world map in
Japan, is located on the grounds. A series of splendid stone statues can also be seen here.
Enjoy a boat cruise by which visitors can see a series of spectacular views of wild, steep cliffs
and 2-km long craggy shorelines created by the pounding waves of the Sea of Japan. The 1953
Japanese film Kimi-no-na-wa (English title: Always in My Heart) was filmed on this location.
Visitors can observe swimming squid in the aquarium. The boat cruises are available from
mid-March to early November.

Sado Kinzan is a historic relic of gold and silver mines that financed the 260-year Tokugawa
shogunate (1600-1867). The mining industry also significantly contributed to modern
technological advancement in Japan’s history during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Guided
tours to those areas are also available. The exhibition area displays scientific samples as well as
miniature models showing each step of the koban coin production process.
1 min. form Sado hanga-mura bus stop
This site is said to have been the place where the residence of Emperor Juntoku (1192-1242)
was built when he was exiled to Sado in 1221. Kuroki, or “black wood”, was named after its
unfinished wood materials. The emperor wished to return to Kyoto, but the Kamakura
shogunate never allowed him to do so. He finally passed away by fasting. An annual ritual
ceremony is held here every July.
