Volume 2, Issue 1, January 2008 Pahang FMU Second to be Certified Under MC&I(2002) Pahang Forest Management Unit (FMU) has become the second FMU after the Negeri Sembilan FMU to be awarded with the new Certificate for Forest Management against the requirements of the Malaysian Criteria and Indicators for Forest Management Certification [MC&I(2002)]. In this issue NEWS ON MALAYSIAN TIMBER CERTIFICATION SCHEME (MTCS) • Pahang FMU Second to be Certified 1 Under MC&I(2002) The award of the Certificate for Forest Management to the Pahang FMU was based on the outcome of a verification assessment conducted by an independent accredited assessor, i.e. SGS (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (“SGS”) on 3-7 September 2007. As all the Major Corrective Action Request (CAR) were closed-out as a result of the verification assessment, SGS has recommended that the Pahang FMU be eligible for the award of the new Certificate for Forest Management under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS) operated by MTCC. Hence, to date two FMUs have complied with the MC&I(2002). The award presentation of the new Certificate for Forest Management to the two FMUs was held in conjunction with the “Majlis Ikrar Perkhidmatan Awam Tahun 2008 dan Pelancaran Buku Kod Etika” organized by Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia (FDPM) on 21 January 2008. • Expiry of Certificate for Forest 2 Management of Selangor and Terengganu FMUs • Six New Timber Companies Certified 2 under MTCS ANNOUNCEMENT 2 FACTS AND FIGURES 3 The public summary of the Pahang FMU Assessment Report can be viewed and downloaded from MTCC’s website. Both the Selangor and Terengganu FMUs have been assessed to the requirements of the MC&I(2002) but were issued with Major Corrective Action Requests (CARs) that would need to be closed out prior to being eligible for certification. In light of the above development, all logs sourced from the Permanent Reserved Forests (PRFs) in the Selangor and Terengganu FMUs beginning 1 January 2008 (i.e. all logs accompanied by Removal Passes dated 1 January 2008 and onwards) will not be recognised as certified material under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS). This ruling would apply until the FMUs concerned have successfully undergone the verification assessments to the requirements of the MC&I(2002) and have been awarded a new Certificate for Forest Management. Participation of relevant stakeholders are by invitation.
