Come and Sample the Blues Banquet!
Until I started working with the Cincy Blues Society, I didn’t realize
what it takes to run a non-profit organization. The Cincy Blues Society
started more than two decades ago by some individuals who believed
that the Blues as an American art form should be preserved and showcased. It’s been a very eye-opening experience to see how many people put
their heart, sweat, money, energy, and time into continuing our mission:
“Keeping the Blues Alive!”
With Cincy Blues Fest in its 19th year, our event is like a Blues buffet. There really is something for everyone depending on the style of Blues
you like. We provide a way to hear and see a variety of great performers
so that people can enjoy what they already love, find something new that
they hadn’t heard before, or get some bite-size samples so they can learn
more about what the Blues has to offer.
Isn’t that what the Blues is anyway? A smorgasbord of styles, vibes,
sounds, skills, influences, and flavors. If you are hungry for a little
down-home cooking, you might try some Delta. If you want an appetease-r, you might go for the spicy Cajun blues. If you want a quick
pick-me-up, there’s Boogie Woogie to get you going. If you are feeling
down, you need some Soul soothing like mama’s chicken soup. If you’ve
got a sweet tooth, maybe you want a little bit of sugar from a female
singer who will make every little thing alright. If you are trying to go
healthy, getcha some electric Chicago to make you move and groove.
The Blues has something for any situation, mood, problem, or party.
Those of us that understand that will never go hungry and never get full.
If you’ve got someone who doesn’t yet know the Blues, take them down to
Blues Fest for a meal they will never forget. Or, serve up some of your
favorite albums and whet their appetite. I’m sure somewhere we could
get 4 out of 5 doctors to agree that the Blues is good for you. Best part is,
Blues is calorie free, heart healthy, the recipe is easy to follow, and there
are no messy dishes to clean up! Bon appétit, Buen Provecho, Enjoy our
35 course banquet of Blues!

Tad Robinson
Rick Holmstrom
This Company was originally established in January of
2007 on a foundation that combines the powerful vocal stylings
of Melissa Young and the irrepressible guitar wizardry of Eric
Henry. Miss Lissa and her accomplished Company are now
joined by Joe Edwards on bass guitar and Aaron Hemmert
on drums – forming a rock solid foundation for their moving
grooves. Miss Lissa & Company have played at many notable
venues large and small throughout the region especially in
Dayton’s Historic Oregon District, but also such places as the
Belterra Casino in Indiana, Southgate House in Kentucky, and
the historic Murphy Theatre in Ohio. The Company has also
been showcased in festivals all over the tri-state area including
the Cincinnati Blues Society’s summer and winter Blues
Festivals, Middletown Blues & Bikes Fest and the Michelob
Dayton Blues Fest. This Company presents a complete
showcase of hot rockin’ blues- from swingin’ upbeat shuffles
to down dirty funks to classic gutbucket blues… with some
trademark originals thrown in for good measure!
Tad Robinson is riding high on his latest CD release, Back
in Style. The disc has spurred three 2011 Blues Music Award
nominations from the Blues Foundation: Soul-Blues Album of
the Year; Blues Song of the Year; and Soul-Blues Male Artist
of the Year. Tad and his band have been globetrotters of late,
performing in 15 countries in the last two years. Robinson’s
band features some of the most exciting and in-demand
players on the current scene: pianist, Kevin Anker (Delbert
McClinton); guitarist Paul Holdman (Jennie DeVoe); drummer
Marty Binder (Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Albert Collins); bassist
David Murray and the TR Horns, Michael Stricklin and Marlin
McKay. Robinson has been recognized by the music industry
for his performances and recorded work with seven total Blues
Music Award nominations since 2005. And Robinson, as a
songwriter, has contributed to the success of major motion
pictures, “A Perfect Murder,” “The Guardian,” and “Under
Siege,” in which he appears as a singer in a memorable scene
with Tommy Lee Jones. He is currently at work writing
material for his 4th studio album, due out in 2012.
Guitarist Aaron Moreland and harpist/vocalist Dustin
Arbuckle have spent nearly a decade exploring the edges
of American roots music. In the process – with help from
the driving beat of drummer Brad Horner – Moreland &
Arbuckle have forged a relentless and haunting sound that
merges Delta blues, folk, rock, traditional country, soul and
numerous other echoes and murmurs from an infinitely
layered musical narrative that spans more than a century.
“It’s hard to say exactly what we are and what we do,” says
Arbuckle. “Blues is definitely at the core, but we’re huge fans
of all sorts of American music, and all of that comes through
as well. Obviously, there are elements of traditional country
in what we do, elements of vintage rock and roll, soul and
all that sort of stuff. We always try to stay grounded in that
traditional blues center, and at the same time branch out and
do as many different things as we can while still keeping it
consistent with the sound we’ve developed.”
Holmstrom was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska.
His parents filled their home with the sounds of 50’s rock,
surf music and the Beatles. His father was a disc jockey who
took him to see Chuck Berry at an early age. After messing
around with the guitar for awhile, Holmstrom gave it up for
sports through his teen years. But while attending college in
Redlands, CA, he joined a band that played blues and roots
rock at parties for beer. After graduating in 1987, Holmstrom
found himself deep into a flourishing Los Angeles blues
scene. Stints with stalwarts such as Smokey Wilson, William
Clarke, Johnny Dyer, Rod Piazza and the old Hollywood Fats
Band led Holmstrom to play and record with legends such
as Jimmy Rogers, Billy Boy Arnold, Jody Williams and R.L.
Burnside. After fifteen years of heavy touring as a sideman,
Holmstrom formed his own band in 2002 and hit the road in
support of Hydraulic Groove.

Brian Keith Wallen
The 18-year-old singer-songwriter and guitarist Brian Keith
Wallen has been playing the blues for almost his entire life. In the
eight years that Brian has been playing, he has released 16 CDs and
performed more than 300 shows, including an appearance at the
Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. He was the first-place winner in
the 2011 Cincy Blues Challenge Solo/Duo Competition. Brian plays
10 instruments, but his strongest is the guitar. His songs are raw,
passionate, and filled with the stinging sounds of slide guitar and
broken hearts. Brian Keith Wallen’s style can be best described as
soulful, acoustic-meets-electric music at the intersection of darkness
and light.
Ben Prestage
“I grew up in rural Florida, on a 14-mile-long dirt road, near
the headwaters of the Everglades,” says Ben. “Out there, there was
only one kind of music in the house. Whether it was being played
on an instrument, or on a recording, it was Blues. Ben, within three
consecutive years took 4th, 3rd, and 2nd place at the International
Blues Challenge (the world’s largest gathering of Blues musicians),
and he is also the only two-time recipient of the Lyon/Pitchford
Award for “Best Diddley-Bow Player.” Ben’s interesting approach to
instrumentation, (fingerstyle guitar, harmonica, banjo, lap-steel, fiddle,
resonator guitar, foot-drums, vocals, and his award-winning original
songwriting (recipient of “The Most Unique Performer” at “The Songwriters’ Showcase of America”) has earned him invitations to perform
across North America, Europe, and as far as North Africa. All awards
aside, he has proven himself, through his live performances, to be the
future of American Blues, Roots Music, Americana and is one of today’s
most talented outsider.
Eden Brent
Eden Brent’s piano playing and singing style ranges from a
melancholic whisper to a full-blown juke joint holler. Brent was able to
develop her gutsy vocal-and-piano chops via family sing-a-longs and a
16-year apprenticeship with the late blues pioneer Boogaloo Ames, who
ultimately dubbed his protégé “Little Boogaloo.” Critics laud her “Bessie
Smith meets Diana Krall meets Janis Joplin” attitude, compare her to
jazz/pop dynamos Norah Jones and Sarah Vaughn, and wax effusively
about her “whiskey-smoke” voice. Since launching her career, she’s won
the Blues Foundation’s 2006 International Blues Challenge, and was a
2004 inductee on the Greenville Blues Walk. Sharing a bill with B.B.
King, Brent performed at the 2005 presidential inauguration, and solo,
she’s appeared at the British Embassy and at the My South celebration
in New York. She’s also burnished her reputation via appearances on
the public radio program Beale Street Caravan, at festivals like the
Waterfront Blues Festival, Edmonton Blues Festival and the annual B.B.
King Homecoming, and aboard the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise.

Big James and the Chicago Playboys
3
The Chicago Playboys first saw the light of day as the back-up
band for Chicago blues and soul singer Little Johnny Christian, and
the name has been carried forward by two of his former brass men
who came together with other like-minded and talented musicians
to create a unique Chicago-rooted, horn-heavy sound. Led by
trombonist and vocalist Big James Montgomery, the Chicago
Playboys today are comprised of Charlie Kimble on saxophone, Kenny
Anderson trumpet, Joe Blocker keyboards, Mike Wheeler guitar and
vocals, Larry Williams bass, Cleo Cole drums and Theresa Davis
backup vocals. Each member brings to the Playboys his or her unique
skill and experiences earned working behind some of the top names in
the fields of blues, soul and gospel. The Playboys have cohered into
a hermetically tight, unrelenting juggernaut of blues, R&B and soul
power. When the Chicago Playboys take the stage, they morph into
a virtual recking-crew of funk and blues-Chicago style, his streetwise
vocals, and his remarkable original songs.
The The mission of the Cincy Blues
Society is to keep the Blues alive, and that
means passing on a love of the music to
the next generation through our Blues
in the Schools (BITS) program, which
provides a free one-hour presentation
during the school day to any school in
the tristate area. The presentation is
geared to grades 3-12 and has received
praise from many local schools, where
students are engaged by one of our local
blues ambassadors, talented musicians
who present the history of Blues music,
performances, and an interactive session.
Some of our presenters are Ricky Nye,
John Redell, and Dick Buchholz, all wellrecognized entertainers in the area. The
program has grown every year. At the
beginning, children would come up after
the program and ask if they could learn to
play the kind of music they’d just heard,
and the BITS program responded by
offering free guitar lessons. The program
has since expanded to include students
interested in playing other instruments
and singing the Blues. With all that young
talent coming our way, we had to find a
way to showcase it—with a performance
slot at the Cincy Blues Fest! Our BITS
Band includes grade school and high
school students from all around the region.
The group is directed by John Redell with
help from other professional musicians
who provide vocal coaching and tutoring
in keyboards, bass, drums, and other
instruments. In response to the steady
growth of the program, other elements
were added, including a Scholarship Fund
and an Under 21 Jam – you can hear these
high school and college students playing
between sets at the Blues Fest. As always,
we need your financial support, so when
you watch our kids perform at this year’s
Blues Fest, think about how you can make
a difference—donations are graciously
accepted. If you’d like more information
about the BITS program, visit us online at
www.CincyBlues.org/bits.
To schedule a presentation at your
school, stop by the BITS booth on
Saturday at the Fest, write us at

“Crazy” Joe Tritschler is a roots

several recordings with ATOM Records

internationally with Deke Dickerson
as well as his own group the Mad River

own unique hybrid of early rock & roll,
rockabilly, and original country with
dashes of soul, jazz, and surf. Born June
29th, 1979 in Columbus, Ohio, Joe
has been playing guitar for more than
25 years; producing and engineering
recordings for over 20 years; and
designing musical, hi-fi, and recording

figure on the Michigan roots rock scene
for more than 20 years. A member of the
Silvertones in the 1970s and Tracy Lee
& the Leonards in the 1980s, Bedard has
been increasingly attracting the attention
that his energetic guitar playing and
gutsy vocals deserve as leader of his own
band, the Kingpins. Goldmine recently
called Bedard “one of the best rockabilly
pickers on the planet,” while Record
Roundup wrote, “Bedard may not become
the next trendy thing, but as far as this
kind of music, he’s already the next cool
thing.” The Kingpins, featuring Randy
Tessier on bass and Rich Dishman on
drums, have developed a reputation as
one of Michigan’s best bands since their
formation in the early-’90s. Their debut
album, Upside, was named Blues Album
of the Year by CD Review in 1992. Upon
the album’s release, Guitar Player referred
to it as “a brainy composite of blues
phrasing and rockabilly bad-boy twang.”
Their second album, Hip Deep, followed
in 1997.

Deborrah Wyndham
As seen on FOX, NBC and ABC,
Dr. Blues
Ricky Nye
Cassidy Gephart
Daryl Davis
Liz Pennock & Dr. Blues have
been performing together virtually
every week of the year since 1983.
Based in St. Petersburg, Florida, the
piano/guitar team captivates audiences
with their vast repertoire of classic,
contemporary and original Blues.
In addition to their duo work, they
have also performed extensively with
legendary Blues shouter Diamond
Teeth Mary McClain, from 1988-2000.
Liz & Doc performed in Belgium at the
Brussels Boogie Woogie Piano Summit
in 2004, in Germany in 2003, and on
the Blues Cruise to Mexico in 2001.
On August 2nd, 2008, Liz Pennock
& Dr. Blues were inducted into the
Boogie Woogie Piano Hall Of Fame at
the Cincy Blues Fest.
diverse artist Deborrah Wyndham, a
jazz/contemporary concert pianist/
composer and also a beautiful folk
singer-songwriter/guitarist, has fascinated
listeners in over 2,700 performances
during the last ten years and more. Her
live piano concerts bring unexpected
satisfaction to both audiences seeking
classical sounds and jazz sentiment.
Although known mostly these days as
a very accomplished and bold pianist
and composer, Deborrah actually began
her performing career as a folk singer/
guitarist doing Celtic, blues, folk, pop and
alternative-folk music. She also performs
on the piano her own arrangements of
music of other genres including stride,
ragtime, pop, etc. Deborrah has sung in
many venues in the Northeast and the
Midwest.
Bob Seeley
Ari Borger
Rob Rio
Matthew Lee
Grand Finale Piano Jam
Detroiter Bob Seeley is a piano
player like Mickey Mantle was a ball
player. The 77-year-old pianist has
been a fixture at the piano bar at
Charlie’s Crabe in suburban Troy,
Michigan, just outside of Detroit,
where he entertained the locals and
visiting dignitaries for over 32 years.
He has played Carnegie Hall several
times and most of the major venues
throughout Europe. Universally hailed
as possibly the greatest proponent of
boogie woogie and stride alive today.
His most conspicuous influence was
Meade Lux Lewis, one of the giants of
boogie woogie, and a friend of Seeley’s.
Eubie Blake was also among Seeley’s
circle of friends and mutual fans. His
interest and repertoire span piano
music from the entire 20th century.
Ari Borger is the main Blues, Jazz
& Soul pianist and organist in Brazil.
Influenced by his American mother,
he grew up listening to Blues and Jazz
masters. Ari lived in New Orleans and
there he performed at the most popular
places, such as House of Blues and
Tipitina’s. In Brazil he played at the
biggest Blues and Jazz festivals, sharing
evenings with B.B. King, Pinetop Perkins,
Marcus Miller and Johnnie Johnson.
When performing live, the Ari Borger
Quartet shows great energy on stage,
taking the audience to a musical trip
with their blend of Blues, Jazz and Soul.
Playing as a team, they only worry about
the music itself. It’s a real and unique
experience.
Ricky Nye’s musical journeys on
piano, organ & accordion have taken
him through jazz, funk, rock & roll,
country, zydeco, New Orleans styles,
boogie woogie & blues knowledge, which
has landed him on countless recording
sessions and as accompanist to renown
blues artists such as James Harman,
Junior Watson, Jason Ricci, Francine Reed
and Darrell Nulisch. Winner of Best
Blues Band in the 2001 CAMMY Awards
and Best Solo Act in 2001 & 2002, along
with Best Blues/R&B Instrumentalist in
2002, as well as Best Blues/R&B Artist
in the 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005 & 2010
CEA Awards. Since 1998, Ricky has been
the producer of the annual BLUES &
BOOGIE PIANO SUMMIT, from which
CDs have been released from the years
1999-2009.
Known by some as the “Boss of
the Boogie”, pianoman/vocalist Rob Rio
plays the boogie-woogie and jump blues
of the 40’s and 50’s with a virtuosity and
elan that has excited audiences around the
world for more than 30 years. Rio was
inducted into the Boogie Woogie Hall
Of Fame in 2008. He has appeared with
many of the original blues greats, such
as Muddy Waters, Willy Dixon, Charles
Brown, Joe Cocker, Paul Butterfield and
many more, and has recorded with Mick
Jagger, Canned Heat, Billy Boy Arnold,
William Clarke, Coco Montoya, Finas
Tasby, Walter Trout, Phillip Walker,
Jody Williams, among others. Born
and raised in the Bronx, N.Y., Rio has
been a favorite attraction throughout the
southland for the last 25 years, either as a
solo performer or with his 5-piece band,
The Revolvers.
Cassidy is 14 years old and lives
in Covington, KY. Although she has
other interests, Cassidy has always been
fascinated with the piano. At age 3,
she participated in her first recital at
Northern Kentucky University. When
she was four, she started participating in
Junior Music Experience. In 2004, she
entered the World Piano Competition
and won a Bronze Medal. At the age of 9,
she traveled to New York City to perform
in the World Piano Competition’s 2004
Concert at Carnegie Hall. In 2008
she became the first female Junior
Champion of the World Championship
Old-time Piano Playing Contest.
Although Cassidy has continued with her
traditional piano studies, she chooses to
devote much of her time to playing oldtime music, boogie and blues.
An extraordinary performer,
pianist, and singer, Matthew Lee has
learned from the great masters on the
keyboard. Despite his youth, he has
already performed in over 700 concerts
throughout Europe and Africa. Some of
his largest concerts have been on New
Year’s 2005 in Rome in front of 150,000
people; Summer Jamboree festival;
JPII Jammin’ Festival in San Giovanni
Rotondo; guest artist at the20th edition
of “Musicultural” together with Cristiano
De Andre and PFM; Festival of Sao
Vincente; Motor Show of Bologna;
Carnival in Cento; Musikmesse in
Frankfurt; Blues on the Farm; and
Linton Festival. As well as being an
extraordinary performer, he is also a song
writer and has written songs like “Ol’
Whiskey Blues,” “Your Name,” “Losin’
Time,” and “Shake Your Body.”
Chicago native Daryl Davis
graduated from Howard University, with
a degree in Jazz. He was mentored by
legendary pianists Pinetop Perkins and
Johnnie Johnson who both claimed him
as their godson and praised his ability to
master a piano style that was popular long
before he was born. In addition to being
a pianist and vocalist, Daryl is an actor,
author, and lecturer. He has worked with
Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, Chuck Berry,
The Legendary Blues Band, Percy Sledge,
and many others. Daryl’s CDs American
Roots and Alternate Routes, received rave
reviews from leading Blues magazines,
winning several WAMA Awards for Best
Artist in the Roots and Blues categories.
As an actor, Daryl has appeared in the
critically acclaimed television show “The
Wire” and a number of stage plays and
movie roles.
Saturday night on the Boogie
Woogie Hall of Fame Piano Stage ends
with the Grand Finale Jam – when all
the performers gather on stage to play,
sing, and even dance together. The
generational divide of the performers is
bridged by their mutual love of the music,
and when they join forces, the results are
amazing. The incredible concentration of
energy and talent generates some of the
most memorable moments of the Fest!
Bad Men on a Mission
Bad Men on a Mission was formed
in the summer of 2009 by guitarist
(and sometime piano player) Jimmy D.
Rogers and harmonica man Jim Jackson.
They won the Cincy Blues Solo/Duo
Challenge in 2010. Recently the group
added Mark Bittenger on bass and Dave
Randall on percussion. The Bad Men
pride themselves on playing raw, stripped
down, electric blues.
The Blues
Merchants
The Juice is a group of accomplished
players and entertainers bent on having a
good time through good music. Formed
by Michele Feaster in 2004, the band
known as II Juicy performed juiced
rhythm and blues locally and regionally
several times each month and won the
Cincy Blues Challenge in 2006. After
Ms. Feaster’s death in 2010, the band
continued her drive for good music
and good times. Having auditioned
many talented singers, the band selected
Lady Joya because of her great voice,
personality, and her fit with the dynamics
of the group. The Juice continues to play
locally on a regular basis, partly in tribute
to Ms. II Juicy, but yet with a new identity
and personality.
Them Bones
Them Bones is a
traditional-style blues band that
was started in 1999 with four
guys who met at the jam session
at Mansion Hill Tavern, and
over the years has had many
members. Them Bones has
won the Cincy Blues Challenge
twice and competed in the
International Blues Challenge
three times, making it to the
finals twice, and finishing third
in 2010. Featuring Little Al
Thomas on guitar and vocals,
and Sonny Hill on keys and
vocals, they play blues their own
way and enjoy playing their
original songs.
Johnny Fink &
the Intrusion
Johnny Fink and The Intrusion
is known as the “Best Kept Secret in
the Midwest Blues Scene” among local
blues and classic rock enthusiasts. The
band was formed in the winter of ’92
originally going with the name “The
Blue Intrusions” with guitar hero Johnny
Fink pulling together a powerful 4-piece
lineup of talented pro players through
a diverse blues spectrum. They covered
a wide range of blues, tapping the soul
of the music from well know legendary
blues artists. Jammin’ everything from
the Allman Brothers to Buddy Guy, then
swinging from Albert Collins to Lonnie
Mack. The band sports over 30 years of
overall professional musical experience,
and each member shares an equal passion
for old school classic rock and blues.
The Tempted
Souls Band
The Tempted Souls have
been on the Cincinnati music
scene since 2004, bringing
together a wide range of
backgrounds and talents to
make an eclectic blend of blues,
R&B, and standards with a
blues feel. The band’s sounds
is strongly influenced by the
sounds of Susan Tedeschi,
Etta James, T-Bone Walker,
and the Allman Brothers. The
members of Tempted Souls
pride themselves on performing
songs that are somewhat obscure
or eclectic compared to other
blues bands.
Blue Sacrifice
Blue Sacrifice started as an idea
between father and son. Lynn Long the
father, and Thomas Long being the son.
The idea was to create a blues band, play
the music they both love, and also play
it together. Thomas Long is the young,
up-and-coming guitar player of Blue
Sacrifice. His playing is way beyond his
years. Weened on blues, classic rock and
classic country he is at home playing
with fire and conviction. Dave “Cousin
Dave” Stayton has a strong and soulful
voice, equally strong harp playing along
with his love of the blues. Lynn Long
is the drummer and foundation of Blue
Sacrifice, always trying to lay down the
groove and make it all feel good. These
are the elements that make up Blue
Sacrifice – each different but yet all
possess the love of the blues.
The Doug
Hart Band
Doug Hart has been a
staple of the southwestern
Ohio blues scene for well over
a decade. He is a relentless live
performer, playing over 250
shows a year with his band or
as a solo acoustic act. You can
feel the passion in his guitar
playing and the soul in his voice
as he bends his blues and rock
influences into a unique sound.
He is faithful to his heroes of
the past while he blazes a path
into the future with his own
compositions. Armed with a
revamped band, Tom Rastikis
on bass, Keith Cozart on drums,
Mike Jordan on keyboards, new
songs, and a refreshed attitude,
they are ready to take on the
entire midwest and beyond!
Ellie Lee & Blues Fury
Ellie Lee & Blues Fury is an
exciting rockin’ blues band with a
powerful on stage performance. Ellie is
a blues guitarist/singer/songwriter that
fronts the band with her unique vocals
and ripping guitar solos. Ellie Lee &
Blues Fury formed to satisfy the need
to play the music they love and have
great fun doing it. “Our excitement and
enthusiasm on stage are infectious to
the crowds we play to. Time and time
again people have told us how much
fun we seem to be having during our
performances. For us, it’s an itch we must
scratch.” The band won Dayton’s 2010
Road to Memphis Blues Challenge, and
placed in the top three of the 2011 Cincy
Blues Band Challenge.
Chuck Brisbin &
the Tuna Project
Formed in mid 2007,
Chuck Brisbin & the Tuna
Project has become recognized
as one of the city’s best bands.
Focusing on their unique
blend of rock, blues, and R&B
that they refer to as “Rockn-Blues,” they will leave you
asking, “When can I see them
next?” The band consists of
former members of American
Standard, MAWG, FIVE, Mojo
Blue, JustUs, The Woodpickers,
Wickerbill, and other bands.
The current members met while
filling in for various bands over
the past few years. The Tunas’
first gig was a private party in
Kentucky in 2007, and they
have been playing out just about
every weekend ever since.
