More than 650 people attended the fast-faced culinary competition, sponsored by the PTC Foundation to raise money for the Culinary Arts building at PTC Little Rock-South. The event raised nearly $190,000. The evening included a reception, dinner and a live auction, but the event really heated up at center stage where the two chefs competed. Diamond Chef followed the format of the popular Iron Chef series. Each chef and his two souschefs had 60 minutes to prepare three dishes using the surprise ingredient - ostrich eggs - announced just minutes before the competition’s start. PTC Foundation Board Member Renata Byler and Community Leader Jill Bloom chaired the successful event. PULASKI TECHNICAL COLLEGE FOUNDATION Bank of America and Jonsson Foundation fund improvements for Learning Assistance Center Early in 2012, Bank of America and the Philip R. Jonsson Foundation provided assistance that upgraded opportunities in the PTC Learning Assistance Center. Bank of America officials Donald J. Cook, city bank president, and Wilson Moore, state bank president, presented a check for $40,000 to the PTC Foundation. The funds will be Donald J. Cook used to expand students’ access to free tutoring and other academic support services through the Learning Assistance Center. The Philip R. Jonsson Foundation has given the PTC Foundation $7,000 to make additional upgrades in the college’s Learning Assistance Center. The gift will be used to update equipment and other learning materials, create additional tutoring options and maintain the quality of its services. Philip and Diane Jonsson also made a personal gift of $3,000 to the PTC Foundation, which was directed for use in the future Fine and Performing Arts/Humanities Center. The Learning Assistance Center provides a much-needed resource for students to improve academic skills through free tutoring, workshops and access to computers and instructional Philip and materials. Diane Jonsson The Blue & You Foundation awards grant for distance education The Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas awarded a grant of $76,400 to the PTC Foundation in January. The grant will fund the use of distance education for teaching students statewide who are seeking an Associate of Allied Health degree in Anesthesia Technology. Classes will be delivered in traditional classroom format in central Arkansas and through advanced-level distance education at up to six sites around the state. Graduates of this program will improve health-care delivery in Arkansas. Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield established the Blue & You Foundation in 2001 as a charitable foundation to promote better health in Arkansas. This year, the Blue & You Foundation received 121 applications requesting $8 million in support. The Foundation funded 21 programs across the state with a total of $1.5 million in grant funds. Cicirello (middle), dean of allied health and human services, during a visit to the college. Melissa Hendricks, grants and major gifts officer, is pictured on the left. PTC receives grant from Walmart Pulaski Technical College was one of 15 community colleges across the country selected to receive a $100,000 Walmart PRESS for Completion grant. The grant program, sponsored by the Walmart Foundation and administered by Achieving the Dream, a national nonprofit leading the nation’s most comprehensive non- governmental reform network for community college student success, will enable PTC to better engage faculty and staff in important campus-based reform efforts. The grant will work to ensure that more students have a better chance of staying in school and obtaining a market-valued credential. 3 Joseph O’Neal Scholarship Fund gives students a running start When four PTC math and science faculty members participated in the Little Rock Marathon in March, their goals were greater than crossing a finish line. They honored the memory of a former PTC student and raised money for a scholarship fund at the college. The scholarship is named in honor of Joseph Lee O’Neal, who was 29 years Joseph O’Neal old when he died in 2009. Joseph, who grew up in foster care, found his “family” at Pulaski Tech, where he attended classes and was a workstudy student in Student Services. He was studying to be a social worker. The Joseph O’Neal Scholarship Fund was established to honor him and provide scholarships for needy students. Four $500 scholarships were awarded in 20102011, and one scholarship was awarded last year. Five $500 scholarships will be awarded to students this year because of a renewed effort coordinated by Dr. Don Kuonen, PTC instructor of biological sciences. Three additional faculty members from the Division of Mathematics/Natural and Social Sciences - Candace Pierce, sociology instructor, and Ginny Wood and Shannon Wilcox, health/nutrition instructors – ran in the Little Rock Marathon with Dr. Kuonen. PTC Students awarded more than $50,000 in scholarships in 2012 Following 2012 scholarship interviews in April and November, the PTC Foundation Scholarship Committee awarded 68 students with funding for tuition and tools. Darwin Buehler led the PTC Foundation’s Technical and Industrial Programs committee, and Ed Staley led the University Studies interview committee. Scholarships were awarded from the following funds: Argenta City Club, Arkansas Pontiac Association and Classic American Muscle Car & Street Association Ben Garcia Memorial, Caterpillar Dealer of Excellence, Crain Automotive Team of Dealerships, Fred Darragh Foundation, Joseph O’Neal Memorial, Business of Art, Rotary Club of Little Rock, Saline Regional Waste Management District, Simmons First National Bank, Television Broadcasters of Arkansas, 3M Industrial, UALR Children’s International, Windgate Foundation, Mitchell Williams Law Firm and the Jordan Allen Ball Memorial. 4 PTCF Golf Tournament Exceeds Goal Pulaski Technical College Foundation (PTCF) held its annual golf tournament, in memory of past college employee P. G. Bradford, on Aug. 27. The event was sponsored by Innerplan Office Interiors and Subway Development. The tournament, which was held at the Country Club of Arkansas, raised more than $36,000, with a sellout crowd of 24 morning teams and 22 afternoon teams. Chick-fil-a provided breakfast, and Whole Hog of North Little Rock catered lunch. One highlight of the day was the ball drop - 410 balls dropped out of a helicopter over the practice green. The ball that landed in the hole belonged to Tony DeMarco with Airetech Corporation. He walked away with $1,000! Funds raised from the tournament are designated for the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Capital Campaign. Pulaski Tech receives $1.25 million to help college-bound veterans The U.S. Department of Education recently announced that PTC was one of 37 sites in the United States awarded a grant to serve veterans through a Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program. PTC will receive $250,000 a year for five years to prepare first-generation military veterans to enroll in and graduate from college. VUB staff will provide tutoring, advising, preparation for college entrance exams, personal and academic counseling and guidance through the college application and financial aid processes. The grant period began Sept. 1 and will support providing services to 130 veterans each year. "The number one thing we do is provide tutoring to veterans," said VUB Director Jackie Johnson. "Once they complete tutoring, we help them with the college entrance process, the admissions and financial aid applications and the course selections. We do quite a bit of personal and educational training." Business of Art honors Russell Harrington, Jr. and Robyn Horn Pulaski Technical College Foundation honored Russ Harrington, President and CEO of Baptist Health and celebrated Arkansas artist Robyn Horn at its annual Business of Art event on March 15. More than 275 guests bid on a variety of art items in the silent auction, watched "live" artists paint and sculpt and listened to a short program. They also enjoyed food by the PTC Arkansas Culinary School and sipped drinks provided by Glazer's Distributors of Arkansas. Phyllis Brown, event chairperson, reported that Business of Art raised more than $72,000. Proceeds will provide scholarships for students and help support the new Fine Arts and Humanities center. Russell Harrington Artist Robyn Horn and Business of Art 2012 chair Phyllis Brown PTC Foundation awarded $112,000 grant from Sturgis Foundation The Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable and Educational Trust recently announced a grant of $112,000 for PTCF's Fine Arts and Humanities Center Capital Campaign. Funds will be used to purchase furnishings and equipment for the new building, expected to open on the North Little Rock campus in 2014. The 87,000–square-foot center will include 15 classrooms, faculty offices, writing and foreign language labs, a theater, costume and set shops, studio space for art and music and exhibit space. The energy efficient structure will have LEED Silver certification. "We are thrilled that the Sturgis Foundation is contributing toward the Fine and Performing Arts Center, which will allow PTC to serve more students and lead cultural and arts activities for students and community," Joyce Taylor, PTC Foundation executive director, said. PTC Foundation video wins awards Constance Hurd (from left) and Jackie Johnson staff the VUB program. "Changing Lives at Pulaski Tech," a nine-minute video highlighting programs geared to help students overcome poverty-centered barriers, received an ADDY Award at the American Arkansas Advertising Federation Arkansas Chapter's ADDY Awards Gala in February. The video was also entered in the regional American Advertising Federation competition. Fried Green Video of Little Rock produced the promotional piece for the PTC Foundation and worked with Richard Williams, PTC Foundation board member and vice chair for development, to create a compelling case for student support programs. The video also won a gold National Council for Marketing and Public Relations District 4 Medallion Award and a national NCMPR Paragon Award. 5 PTC celebrates staff and faculty campaign success PTCF staff hosted a Faculty/Staff Campaign Celebration on August 29 to recognize employees who donated to the fundraising effort. Employees who gave to the annual campaign had a choice of tasting up to 18 flavors of Blue Bell ice cream. The 2012 Faculty/Staff Campaign raised more than $59,000 for the Business Technology Center. Doug Hutchins and Rob Grayson, Blue Bell Creameries, provided the ice cream and served the delicious treat to PTC employees.
