It was Corinne’s first acting audition and she had only taken two voice lessons throughout her life. Little did she know that landing the role of Mimi’s mother would be a life–changing experience. In 2009, Corinne began her studies in the Dance program at Howard University. The program was not for her. Corinne explains, “It upset me that I was becoming this different person that I didn’t even really like.” Corinne decided to seek advice from her favorite Webster Thomas High School teacher, Mrs. Nitsch. Corinne credits Mrs. Nitsch as the first person who said “you have to be the one who can go to bed at night and be happy with what you’re doing. Nobody else.” “That really changed everything for me. I dropped out of the Dance major” says Corinne. Knowing Corinne loved the show Rent, a friend told her that the JCC was performing it over the summer. “If I hadn’t gotten into Rent, then I would not have met the amazing people at the JCC.” Corinne now plans to major in Musical Theater and is working with JCC Artistic Director Ralph Meranto to prepare for her upcoming auditions. It’s really nice to have someone who says, “You could be a great performer, you have the potential, and I want to help you get there.” She is also building her resume and bank account by working two jobs, interning in the JCC Arts Department and performing in the CenterStage production of My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding in December. We don’t expect her to stay in Rochester for long though. “Broadway is the capital T–H–E goal,” states Corinne. For more information about My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding and how to buy tickets for this show, please turn to page 16. Photographs and story by Maria Sikic, Casey Staff and Rob Shook. jccrochester.org During her acting lesson with Ralph Meranto at the JCC, Corinne rehearses a monologue. Corinne perfects a song during a voice lesson with Derrick Smith at Nazareth College. Corinne is measured for costumes at the first rehearsal of My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding at the JCC. At their first rehearsal, Corinne reviews the script of My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding with the rest of the cast. The cast of My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding introduce themselves to one another at the first rehearsal. 5 Youth Group Fitness Schedule YOUTH FITNESS January 3–February 18 For more information contact Shara Chisholm, Youth Activities Director at ext. 291 or email [email protected] Monday 4pm Four Square 45 min Sport Lounge Kirk 4:45pm Medicine Ball Circuit Training 45 min Sport Lounge Mike 5:30pm Archery Tournament (Wii) 45 min Sport Lounge Kirk Tuesday 4pm Hockey Sport Wall 45 min In Zone Kirk 4:45pm Nerf Dart Tag 45 min In Zone Gabe 5:30pm Wii Fit Snow Boarding (Wii) 45 min Sport Lounge Gabe 6pm Table Tennis * 60 min Gym Iosif Wednesday 4pm Kids Zumba * 4:45pm Kids Yoga * 5:30pm Four Square 45 min Sport Lounge Diana 45 min Sport Lounge Sarah 45 min In Zone TBD Thursday 4pm Kids 10K * 45 min In Zone TBD 4:45pm Sword Play Tournament (Wii) 45 min Sport Lounge Gabe 5:30pm Wii Fit Snow Boarding (Wii) 45 min Sport Lounge TBD * These classes require a fee and registration at the Main Desk. Left to right Eke Aiono, Don Sheehan, Steve Cohn and James Gleason On Thursday September 2, 2010, Eke Aiono, Steve Cohn and James Gleason saved the life of Don Sheehan. Don, along with his wife Carol, have exercised in the JCC Fitness areas for the past 36 years. Eke is also Don’s personal trainer. However on this evening, Don’s life came to a literal stop on the track. While running on the track, Don collapsed from a heart attack. Eke, who was teaching a class in the gym, immediately responded. JCC members Steve and James, who were participating in Eke’s class, also went to help Eke administer CPR to Don. When Don did not respond, the three calmly used their training and shocked Don back to life with the AED. This whole process continued for about 15 minutes, with the help of many other staff. The JCC would like to say, “thank you” to all the staff, who were present that evening. The JCC would especially like to acknowledge the efforts of Eke for again demonstrating how he puts members first. We would also like to thank Steve and James, who stepped up without concern for themselves, when another person needed help. “We are so appreciative that Eke, Steve and Jim responded within two minutes with highly skilled care that saved my life. Thank goodness for the JCC!” … Don and Carol Sheehan jccrochester.org 7 FITNESS (Sessions will include training on Reformer and Chairs) Small group classes (limit 4 per class) Member: $200 Non Member: $280 Private sessions packages 1 session–Member: $50 Non Member: $60 3 sessions–Member: $144 Non Member: $160 5 sessions–Member: $225 Non Member: $250 Semi–private (2 person) sessions (participants are responsible for finding a partner prior to booking session) Non Member: $45 1 session–Member: $35 3 sessions–Member: $96 Non Member: $126 5 sessions–Member: $150 Non Member: $200 For more information contact Becky Devlin ext. 271 or email [email protected] jccrochester.org for the current and upcoming January schedule. This celebratory season was dedicated in memory of Irving Germanow, a life–long supporter of the Arts at the Jewish Community Center, who passed away earlier in the year. On a beautiful weekend in June the extended families of Ilene Kozel and Candy Kramer came together to enjoy their annual weekend at Camp Seneca Lake and celebrate their families’ connections to this very special place. The entire Weekend Getaway community joined them at a beautiful dedication of the Onondaga Bridge in memory of Ilene Kozel’s parents, Ann Lib and Bernard Kozel, by the Kozel–Kramer–Fund–Frank Family. “Bernie and Ann Lib left a legacy of extraordinary leadership,” says Leslie Berkowitz, “inspiring ideas and a never ending desire to support projects that made a difference in our community and they did this with wisdom, generosity, and grace. Their commitment to the JCC and the community spanned over 60 years and inspired their children, grandchildren and so many others to follow in their path. Ilene Kozel summed it up best. “The JCC has always been there for us, and now it is our turn to be there for the JCC and CSL. I especially want to thank our children for participating in this gift with us. We are two very proud and thankful Jewish mommies. And I particularly want to thank Adam for bringing our vision for a sign to life. My hope is that our children will continue to ‘pay it forward’, dor l’dor, generation to generation, so that others can experience CSL as so many of us have.” Camp Seneca Lake is a family affair Adam, Celina (holding Caden) and, Tanner Frank stand with the plaque designed by Adam Frank of Adam Frank Woodworks to pay tribute to Ann Lib and Bernard Kozel and honor their legacy of support for the JCC and for Camp Seneca Lake. Adam is a member of the 3rd generation of the Kozel, Frank, Fund, Kramer Family to attend CSL, which made Tanner and Caden fourth generation campers at this year’s Weekend Getaway at CSL! On October 14, a special dedication of the Interactive Zone’s “Virtual Gym” made possible by a generous gift from Dawn and Jacques Lipson, M.D., was held at the JCC. For information on next summer’s Weekend Getaway, please contact Aaron Cantor, CSL’s Associate Director at [email protected] or call 585–461–2000 ext. 263. 15 YIDDISH CLASSES CULTURAL ARTS Beginning Yiddish The JCC’s own Feinbloom Library may be tucked away in a corner, but inside there is a large collection of Jewish literature and materials you may not have seen before. Grounded in the principles of Jewish values, the JCC of Greater Rochester’s “Access to Community, a program for adults with developmental disabilities” is the umbrella program for the Center’s programming for individuals with developmental disabilities and for those who participate in the JCC’s Chug and Yachad programs. JCC’s “Access to Community” is made possible by a generous grant from the B. Thomas Golisano Foundation. The purpose of this grant is to increase participation of adults with disabilities, increase physical activity, enable adults with disabilities to utilize the JCC, and create an environment where individuals feel welcomed and included. The “Yachad–Access to Community” program creates an environment where ALL adults with developmental disabilities are inclusively participating in Center community life beyond the specific Chaverim and Chug programming. The goal of this program is to significantly increase access and participation for adults with developmental disabilities in programs and services that are available to ALL members of the community including fitness, wellness and recreation programs, social programs and cultural arts programs.
