General Park Policies
Park Closing Policy: All Park District parks will close at 10:30 p.m. This does not include the parks of Riverside, Carpenter or Gurgens Park that open at dawn and close at
dusk. This also has no effect on the bike/pedestrian trails (Interurban, Wabash, Lost Bridge and Bunn to Lost Bridge) owned and or maintained by the Park District.
Park District Waiver: A Waiver and Release of All Claims form must be signed when registering yourself or your minor child for
Springfield Park District programs and/or memberships. Registration waivers are available at all Park District facilities or online
at www.springfieldparks.org.
Photo Disclaimer: Registrants and participants of programs and special events permit the Springfield Park District to take photos and
videos of themselves and their children for publication in the program catalog, website and additional uses as the Springfield Park District
deems necessary.
Residency Policy: The Springfield Park District is committed to serving the residents of the Springfield Park District. A resident is defined
as anyone living within the boundaries of the Springfield Park District. Residents support the Springfield Park District facilities and programs
through property taxes and therefore receive preferred rates for many of the services provided by the Springfield Park District. To determine

Smoking Policy: All Park District indoor facilities, including spectator/viewing areas are designated as non-smoking
areas. Thank you for your cooperation.
Warning of Risk: Recreational activities/programs are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental, and
emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning
and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity/program. Understandably,
not all hazards and dangers can be foreseen. Depending on the particular activity, participants must understand that
certain risks, dangers, and injuries due to inclement weather, slipping, falling, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness,
horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, premises defects, inadequate or defective equipment, inadequate supervision,
instruction or officiating, and all other circumstances inherent to indoor and outdoor recreational activities/programs exist. In
this regard, it must be recognized that it is impossible for the Springfield Park District to guarantee absolute safety.
Facilities Policy: All facilities participants are expected to follow the rules of the facilities. Specialty areas of the facilities
have posted signs stating special rules specific to that area. Disregard or abuse of facility rules may result in removal by
staff or police from the facility for a designated length of time or permanently.
Inclusion Policy: The Springfield Park District welcomes participants with all abilities. To learn more about how we can assist your

Vandalism Alert: The Springfield Park District has experienced vandalism within several of its parks and buildings. We need your eyes
and your help to stop these criminal acts. If you witness the act of vandalism please call the police immediately and report it by calling
911. If you notice graffiti and property damage in the parks or district buildings please call the Springfield Park District Police at 698-6030.
You may also make a report on the comment area on the website at springfieldparks.org. Any assistance from our residents would be
greatly appreciated in reporting and putting an end to these crimes. The Springfield Park District will prosecute these senseless acts to
the full extent of the law.
Concealed Carry: Firearms are not allowed in Park District facilities or on Park District properties.

L.E.A.P. - LEISURE EDUCATION AND ADAPTIVE
PROGRAMMING
Is a program of adaptive recreation for individuals with disabilities offered through the
Springfield Park District. L.E.A.P. programs are for individuals from pre-school through
adult. Special populations we serve include but are not limited to: learning disabilities,
physically impaired, behavior problems, visually impaired, multiple disabilities, or those
with any other special needs. All attempts are made to place participants in programs
according to their disability, age and peer group. All L.E.A.P. programs require a minimum
of 2 participants and have a maximum of 12 participants unless noted otherwise. All
participants must register one week in advance!

jointly provides a wide range of
programming for individuals with
disabilities. Chatham residents
will receive equal eligibility and

Recreation programming.

After School Recreation – PowerPlay!
Beyond School
We will be offering an afterschool program for individuals with disabilities.
This program will focus on fitness, nutrition, and health. We will provide
a snack, recreational activities as well as time to do homework. For more

We take a one day trip to places outside and
around our area. All admissions are included in
the fee. You must register 2 weeks in advance
for each program.

Alley Catz Bowling
Year-long bowling program for the developmentally disabled that consists
of eight 8 week sessions. The Alley Catz bowling league offers a great
opportunity for socializing. All participants must register one week
in advance!

Learn the basics of cooking! This class with teach the basics of
independent cooking with a focus on learning to use small kitchen

Some food will be prepared most weeks but not a full meal. All

What is Special Olympics?
Special Olympics is a way to promote fun, sportsmanship, friendship,
independence and good health for the special needs population. Along
with the Springfield Park District, Special Olympics Illinois is offering
year-round programs with a wide range of sports for athletes to choose

Group Golf Lessons
The Springfield Park District will offer a series of four 1-hour golf lessons.
Taught by PGA Professionals, each session will provide instruction on all
aspects of the game including pre-shot fundamentals, putting, chipping,
and full swing. Students will also get an opportunity to go on the course
and learn proper etiquette and the Rules of Golf. In addition, each
student will receive a certificate for one 9-hole round of golf to be used
at either Pasfield or Bergen G.C. Register at Lincoln Greens beginning

SESSION ONE April 6 - May 11
Basic Ballroom
Learn the basics of Waltz, Foxtrot, Rhumba, and a “taste” of Swing. This
“jumpstart” class will get you dancing to several types of music quickly
and is the prerequisite for all Rhumba, Waltz, and Foxtrot classes that
follow. A perfect place to get started. Follow-up with Waltz & Foxtrot I
next session.
6-7 p.m.
All Cha Cha
Learn the basics and much, much more. Versatile Cha Cha is danced to
Latin music but also to much of the rock n’ roll music, with or without a
Latin beat; a dance you will learn to love and will use a lot.
7:15-8:15 p.m.
East Coast Swing I
The prerequisite for this class is Basic East Coast Swing skills. Take your
Single-Step East Coast Swing/Jitterbug to the next level with advanced
patterns and techniques. Dance to all the current sounds plus the
oldies. You can never know too much Swing.
8:30-9:30 p.m.
SESSION TWO July 6 - August 10
East Coast Swing (Triple-Step)
Triple-Step Swing was designed to be danced to medium-tempo swing
music; it complements your Single-Step Swing (Jitterbug) and can be
danced in conjunction with other swings or on its own. This dance is not
only fun but will soon be a favorite. 6-7 p.m.
Waltz & Foxtrot I
The prerequisite for this class is the Basics of Waltz and Foxtrot. Continue your Basic Ballroom skills in Waltz, with its smooth and flowing
movements, and Foxtrot, the most popular social dance in the world. You
will soon be gliding across the floor with confidence. 7:15-8:15 p.m.
All Tango
American style Tango dance and music is like no other; both are unique. The dance is earthy and dramatic with movements that go from slow and
slithery to sharp and staccato. You do not want to miss this class.

Basic West Coast Swing
This medium tempo swing can be danced to rock n’ roll, swing and blues
music. This class will cover all the 6-count basic step patterns and more;

Rhumba II (2)
The prerequisite for this class is Rhumba I skills. This “dance of love”
class will add step patterns and technique to your Rhumba I skills.
Rhumba, a slow – moderate tempo Latin-based dance, can be danced
to all your ballroom and contemporary favorites, with or without a Latin
beat. This class will definitely take your ‘moves’ to the next level. 8:30-9:30 p.m.

Beginner Fencing
Basic maneuvers are introduced along with bouting, and the general

British Soccer Camp
Challenger Sports’ British Soccer Camps provide young players of all
abilities with the rare opportunity to receive high-level soccer coaching
from a team of international expert’s right in the heart of their own
community. Campers will be exposed to individual foot skills, technical
drills, tactical practices, small-sided games and scrimmages. Soccer
skills are coached within a framework of character development based
on respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship.
We offer a cultural education too! Our ever-popular Camp World Cup
Tournament allows us to introduce players to the geography, traditions
and culture of other great soccer-playing countries. Simply put; amazing
coaches, awesome accents and cultural ingredients combine for a
one-of-a-kind camp experience. Participants will receive a free t-shirt,
soccer ball, giant fold-out poster and a personal player evaluation. Partial
scholarships are available for families willing to host the British coaches.

Cooking Summer Style

You can be a Super Hero
In this class your child will learn to become a super hero. Your child will
learn what super powers they have by using stories, songs and crafts to
help them. They will create their own super power cape. This is a child

Science of Fantasy
Do you know that fairies, pirates and kings and queens use science
too? Finding treasure in fizzing rocks, crystals in their royal names, and
illuminating fairies in a jar will be just some of the experiments of your

Urban Fishing Program
The free fishing program is designed to teach children to fish and
is sponsored by Springfield Park District and Department of Natural
Resources. The Program will have an educational period and an actual
fishing time. The program will focus on safety, fishing techniques and
aquatic ecology. Fishing equipment and bait will be provided for free.
An adult must stay with the child. The program is limited to about 20
children, and a reservation is required. Call Deb Clark at 217-546-3970

Five Evenings of Carillon Music
The International Carillon Festival, first held in 1963, is
lauded as one of the world’s most important and prestigious
carillon events. This year’s carillonists include Luc Rombouts
(Belgium), Amy Johansen (Australia), Dennis Curry (USA),
Jeff Davis (USA) Carlo van Ulft (IL). Please bring a picnic
dinner as well as lawn chairs and blankets. Enjoy the ever
popular firework display on the last concert day, Friday at

Special Summer Concerts
Art Spectacular, an event of the Rees Carillon Society, is a juried
fine art and fine craft fair featuring up to 50 artists presenting their
original artwork in a dynamic variety of balanced artistic mediums. Art
Spectacular attracts 6,500 art enthusiasts for its museum-quality craft
and works of art. It also features patron bucks, local musicians, food
vendors, gift basket raffle, silent auction, kids’ art sale and Kids’ Place.
Springfield Park District’s carillonist plays a mix of tunes well known to
the Lincoln family, from Mozart to Stephen Foster and patriotic tunes
familiar to those of the mid 1800’s.
