neighbours, we hope you will let it be a
reminder that we would love to hear from
you, as well. If you don't want to share a

Our 25th Anniversary Prize Competition

Remembrance Day Service &
Poppy Campaign
(10/30/15) � The Royal Canadian Legion,
Branch 17 Alliston, invites the community to
its Remembrance Day Service at the Alliston
Cenotaph (corner of Paris and Albert Streets)
on Wednesday, November 11th. The event
will start at 10:30 a.m., with 2 minutes of
silence at 11:00 a.m., followed by laying
wreaths of remembrance.
The official unveiling of the wall mural on
the west side of the Alliston Memorial Arena,
which is dedicated to the service of Canadian
troops in Afghanistan, will be take place
at 10:40 a.m.
All members of the community are invited
back to the Legion (located at 111 Dufferin St.)
for refreshments and comradeship.
A Remembrance Day Dinner will be served at
the Legion (Walker Hall side). Tickets are $20
per person and must be purchased in advance.
A special guest speaker from Base Borden will
be in attendance. The event starts at 6:00pm
with dinner at 7:00 p.m.
The Poppy Campaign runs until November
10th. Many Legion members will be at stores
and local businesses collecting donations that
directly support Canada’s serving and retired
Veterans and their families, while reminding
us to that we must never forget about their the
sacrifice they made in service to country!

Pat (Watt) Friesen to be inducted
into the Leaside Sports
Hall of Fame
Pat (Watt) Friesen | Multisports (1937 – )
Pat (Watt) Friesen will be inducted into the
Leaside Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony
and reception at the Leaside Arena on
November 20th. Four other inductees will be
honoured alongside Pat: George Armstrong,
Charlie Ahier, Annie Fahlenbock, and
Arthur (Laurie) Irwin.
Pat Watt was born in East York and attended
Leaside High School from 1952 to 1955
She represented the Leaside Tennis Club,
winning the Canadian Women’s Doubles
Title in 1954 and the Canadian Junior Tennis
Title in 1955. In 1954, her Under Eighteen
basketball team, Leaside United, captured
the Ontario Junior B Championship. In 1958
she competed as catcher for a local team in
the World Softball Championship, and in
1962, played on the Eastern Canada Senior
Women’s Basketball Championship team.
Watt and her mother Kay were founding
members of the Leaside Curling Club. In her
25 years of curling, Watt’s rink won many bon
spiels including, in the late ‘60s, the
Seven-Year Fillies’ bon spiel at High Park.
Pat (Watt) Friesen and her husband Frank
moved to 79 Green Briar Road on
November 15th, 1993. Many Briars' residents
will remember Pat, including those who
played golf and tennis with her. Pat now
resides in Simcoe Manor in Beeton.

to change her glasses because her progressive lenses
were interfering with her distance vision when she
was spending all her time lying in bed. Dr. Amarnath
visited her in the hospice twice to help her sort out her
eyeglass needs. He made a temporary pair of eyeglasses
and then replaced them with two pairs of permanent
glasses (one for reading, one for distance) at no charge,
as a courtesy for a dying patient. We were touched
deeply by this kind gesture and are very grateful to
Dr. Amarnath and the staff for their generosity and care.”

“I connected with Dr. Peacock from the onset of my very
first appointment. He always took the time to listen
to my concerns and was eager to investigate every
potential course of action to help me achieve the most
positive outcome.
I have had several issues with my vision over the years,
so assisting me was not easy or routine. Unfortunately,
my original surgery in May 2013 did not produce the
desired results and my prognosis looked pretty grim. Dr.
Peacock persisted and the surgeon decided to perform the
procedure for a second time in August 2013.
Six weeks post-surgery, I had a follow-up visit with Dr.
Peacock and once again he persevered, trying every
possible combination of corrective lenses to ensure my
vision would be better than I had prior to the surgery. I
could not be happier with the result! Dr. Peacock and his
staff are passionate about their profession, and show real
compassion for their patients.

This poem was written about 60 years ago,
when Lynn was in grade 12. It won first prize
for humour and was published in the Eastern
Commerce High School yearbook, "Eastern
Echo", in Toronto.
Tall, lean and never clean,
When he's needed he's never seen;
I always wonder where he's been,
My evasive brother-in-law.
He likes to tinker with a car,
Travels take him near and far.
Always happy, black as tar,
My carefree brother-in-law.
Hops around from job to position,
Always trying to improve his condition,
Which seems to me a futile mission,
My persistent brother-in-law.
A convincing story he can tell,
But what a pity he can't spell.
For at this art he would excel,
My witty brother-in-law.
Money's something he can't hold,
He never has the type to fold
Because he has a heart of gold!
My generous brother-in-law.
He went a-hunting with lots of pluck,

But what a shame he hadn't any luck.

He spent four years in Canada's West,

Condo CORNER
Minutes and Reports
The first Condo Corner was published in the
December 2010 issue of the Briar Crier and since
then it has appeared on a fairly regular basis.
We and the author are regularly asked to tackle
subjects that have previously been covered.
This is understandable as many of the current
residents have moved here since the article they
are looking for was printed. This month, we are
reprinting a column that first appeared in the
January 2011 edition. While we may from time
to time republish columns, we are also planning
to make many from earlier editions available
through our website (briarcrier.ca).
There is often confusion between minutes and
reports. The main purpose of corporate minutes
is to record decisions. “Who” said “what” does
not belong in the minutes of meetings of either
the Board or owners. Decisions on their own,
however, might be difficult to understand without
explanations. A short statement explaining the
reasons for the decision may be appropriate or
even essential for a full understanding.
If, for example, a meeting of owners were to be
asked to confirm a by-law increasing the number
of directors, the minutes might record something
like “The duties of the directors having become
more numerous and onerous, plus the difficulty
in holding meetings due to a lack of a quorum,
makes it desirable that the number of directors
be increased”. The details of the discussions and
arguments around this issue should not, however,
be recorded in the minutes.
Decisions of a meeting are made by resolution
and should be recorded in the minutes as such.
While stating that a resolution followed a properly
made and seconded motion is not essential, it is
good practice. Naming the proposer and seconder
is also not required, but is common practice and
is harmless. Decisions should be recorded in the
minutes with something like “Upon a motion
(by…), seconded (by…) resolved that (here the
exact wording of the motion needs to be carefully
recorded)”. Wording such as “a motion to (…) was
carried”, may be sufficient, but there is a danger
that just the general sense, rather than the exact
intent of the motion, may be recorded in error and
this style of minute is best avoided.
Where it is known in advance of a meeting that
a decision is likely to be made, it is a good idea
to have the exact wording of the motion written
out and provided to an attendee in advance.
This person, at the appropriate time and at the
invitation of the chair, can then move the motion
by reading what is written. In this way there is
absolute clarity in the minds of those voting as
to what it is they are being asked to vote on. And
when the affirmative vote is taken the same exact
words will be recorded in the minutes.
Minutes should be written with this thought
in mind. How would a court of law read and
understand them if looked at out of context in
the future? That may seem rather dramatic, but
then one never knows when such a test might be
applied!
A report that deals with more details of the
discussions may be required in addition to the
minutes. For example, a newsletter might include
a report of a meeting for the information of
members who were absent from the meeting.
There is nothing wrong with this, but such a report
does not form part of the official records of the
corporation.

Karen Huestis, Ontario Director of the Canadian
Snowbird Association was the keynote speaker
at our last meeting. She had many tips and
insights for our club members, many of whom
are preparing to make the trek South for all or
part of the winter.

Karen explained that the Association is a notfor-profit organization. It is the National voice
of Canadian Travellers. It is a strong advocate of
issues for those travelling abroad and an active
lobbyist in the U.S. Senate and Congress.
Karen explained that the organization has been
instrumental in having a number of proposed
U.S. bills quashed. Most notably was the 2002
proposal to limit Canadians’ stays in the U.S.
This post 9/11 bill would have limited visits to 30
days. The Association was able to rally support
from many U.S. Senators and Representatives
from States where the Looney was an important
source of income. More recently a representative
met with Florida’s Governor the day after the
International Driving License debacle arose.
They gained quick support to exempt Canadians
from that legislation.
Karen also had some words of caution for U.S.
travellers regarding the I.R.S. Under current
policy, eligible Canadian citizens may spend
up to six months less a day, in the United
States, in any twelve-month period. From a tax
perspective, long-term visitors who typically
spend four or more months in the U.S. each
calendar year may be deemed resident aliens for
tax purposes. In order to be treated as a nonresident alien, these individuals need to claim
a “closer connection” to Canada by filing IRS
Form 8840 annually. This form and other critical
information can be found on the Association’s
website: snowbirds.org. She reminded travellers
to the U.S. that they should keep detailed
records of their visits. She also remarked that
cruises taken from U.S. ports to the Caribbean
and elsewhere are considered “vacations from
the U.S.” and must be counted as days spent
within the United States.
Karen was proud of the Association’s success in
pushing Ontario to extend the OHIP coverage

were not significant and private insurance is
always recommended for foreign trips and also
within Canada. Some Provinces do not recognize
OHIP. The Association offers discounted services
such as travel and auto insurance, currency
exchange, as well as auto club memberships. The
Association also publishes a Report Card that
rates the Provinces in their support of Travellers.
The Yukon rates highest with an A- while British
Columbia is lowest with a C. Ontario earned
a C+.

By now many of you are enjoying other activities
or continuing your frustrating goal of improving
your golf in some warmer climate.
The Closing Luncheon was held at the BHCC
in September, following 9 holes of modified
Stableford Golf on The Ridge. What luck …
no rain! The lunch was catered and the hall
decorated in autumnal hues by Irene Blaney's
Social Committee. Arline thanked the volunteers:

LADY DUFFERS'
GOLF ASSOCIATION
On October 28th the Duffers ended the season
with a fun game where each foursome was
given a pink ball that they hit on a rotational
basis. Each player could use only three clubs
including the putter.
Following the game, handsome male
volunteers served wine while over 100 ladies
enjoyed the delicious lunch that was catered
and organized by Bev Hughes and her
committee. The ladies who dressed in black
and white outfits were a complement to the
classy décor.
Dorothy Whitehead, our captain, introduced
and thanked the members of the executive
with a special thank you to retiring
Barbara Ingham who has organized the
Lady Duffers' bagged lunches for 10 years.

LETTER:
I made a mistake in the October edition of the
Briar Crier for which I am very sorry.
My mistake caused distress to Angela and
Griff Richmond, as well as Valerie Tripp
whose letter, which was published in the
October edition, I edited incorrectly.
Sadly, Angela and Griff Richmond lost their
son recently. When placing Valerie's report in
the Briar Crier, my memory did not serve me
well and I stated that Griff, Angela's husband,
had passed away. I have talked to Angela and
Valerie, both of whom kindly accepted my
apology. I would like to take this opportunity
to apologize to the friends and neighbours of
Angela, Griff, and Valerie who were affected
by my error. I am sincerely sorry.

community who, over the past 7 plus years,
have helped make my responsibilities as the
BHCC Custodian a reasonable one and at

Green Briar Car Rally
We had an outstanding response to this years
Green Briar Car Rally hosted by The Briars
Computer Club. It was a sell out once again.
This year, team names were created and
participants wore costumes that related to
their car number and/or name.
On our beautiful countryside drive, some of
were surprised to discover what we have right
here in our own backyard. About halfway on
our drive, participants were guided to find
the checkpoint that was the entrance to a
wilderness park. The Marshall's were waiting
for us, ready to test our aiming skills with a
dartboard and darts, which was a lot of fun
and filled the air with laughter.
Throughout the day, clues led us to finding
all sorts of amazing facts; some were historical
and others were unique. We visited a
local fruit and veggie farm and a specialty
chocolate shop where we enjoyed some of the
proprietor's delicacies.
Upon arriving back at the Community Centre,
Harry Mighton was waiting and ready with
a Trivia Contest and Poker Hands. The Name
the Car Contest, the costumes, and cars were
judged on their uniqueness. Thank you
Barbara Gordon for your help with this.
Many local businesses donated great prizes.
Our thanks go out to each of them.
Everyone enjoyed the food, with many
selections to choose from, which included
Dianne's "1st Prize Winning Spiced Chili".
We are so thankful to live in such a great
community and for the friends who
volunteered so much time to make this
another successful Car Rally. We could not
have done it without you …

7th and running to April
28th, 2016 (17 weeks). The
cost per player is $150.

The hockey will be traditional old-time recreational hockey with no slap shots or body checking.
There will be 10 players plus goalies on each side and a spare list to draw from.
Any interested residents of Green Briar and Briar Hill are asked to contact one of the names
listed below (email preferred). First chance to be a regular will be given to Briar residents and
any other players needed to complete the roster will be seniors from the local community. We
need a commitment from players by December 20th at the latest in order to finalize the ice-time
contract and start by January 7th, 2016.
If the January to April, 2016 hockey works, we will likely continue on Thursdays for the rest
of 2016.

Movie Night
2015 Toy Drive
Movie night is on November 29th this month.
The movie will be shown at 7:30pm.
This year we will see changes to the
organization of the Toy Drive. In past years,
the Male Chorus hosted a concert on Friday
and Saturday evenings, accepting donations of
new toys, games, and monetary donations for
the Lions Club to deliver during the Christmas
season. Unfortunately, the concert will not be
taking place this year.
PUB NIGHT
The jammers will be at the GBCC again on
Friday, November 13th at 7pm. BYOB and
snacks and enjoy the music.
Halloween Breakfast at the
Coffee Club
Pictured below are Betty Ann, Lynette, Peggy,
Vivian, Rosemary, and Carol. These lovely
ladies organized an entertaining breakfast
for people who attended the Coffee Club
at the Green Briar Community Centre on
October 29th. As residents arrived, they were
completely enchanted by the witch who
greeted them at the door and guided them
into the festively decorated community centre.
What a great way to start the day!
The Coffee Club is a weekly event held on
Thursday mornings from 8:15 to 9:45am. It is
well attended and a great way to get to know
your neighbours.

Instead we are hosting a Toy Drive from the
Green Briar Community Centre. During
the week of November 23 through
November 27, bring an unwrapped new toy or
game to the donation box in the Community
Centre. Monetary donations can be made on
Tuesday or Thursday of that week during
office hours, 9am to 1pm or on Wednesday
evening from 6 until 8pm. We welcome any
monetary donations from any of the regularly
scheduled activities at the Centre that would
like to participate in this year’s Toy Drive.
All donations will be delivered to the Lions
Club for distribution.

this year at the BHCC.
There will be boxes in the foyer at starting
November 15th.
Please help us to help others by donating an
unwrapped new toy or food items which will be
donated to the Alliston Lions Club and the Local
Food Bank in Alliston.
Toys will be distributed to children in the New
Tecumseth area just before Christmas.
Last year we donated nearly 700 pounds of food
