My email Inbox is proof
that 2015 will be a
great year!
… if only it were that simple. Anyway, I
choose to be an optimist and I do believe 2015
is going to be a good year.
My husband, Ron, and I took a two-week
vacation together in St. Martin in January.
It was a quiet and relaxing vacation; just
what we planned and needed. We take our
vacations in January, because it is usually
quiet at this of year. On my first day back at
work, however, I discovered I had received
far more email and voicemail messages in
January than I ever have before. Not a bad
thing … it actually made me feel rather
optimistic.
In my observation, it is obvious that the
volunteers at the community centres are
working hard to plan events, etc., for the
months ahead. And, it appears that people
are planning earlier this year, both on a
personal level and for business. I expect
all that planning will help to make 2015 a
good year and with this magazine's 25th
Anniversary coming up in May, it is going to
fun publishing for you. 

Councillor's Report
Fran Sainsbury
My last report in the Briar Crier was in the July
edition. Due to the election rules, I had to cease
writing to you and work hard to win my seat on
Council as your representative in Ward 4. I have
a strong mandate from you to continue to take
care of your interests on Town Council.
I want to take this opportunity to thank my
family, friends, neighbours and all of my terrific
volunteer workers who worked along with me
to make my campaign so successful. I had the
highest vote count of all the 8 Wards in New
Tecumseth. Thank you Ward 4 voters. It is great
to see our neighbours at “Treetops” getting
involved in many community events.
Many meetings will have been held with my
new colleagues when you are reading this
article. The new Town committees for 2014-2018
will be established and the budget will be almost
finalized for this year. It is our goal to try and
have lower tax increases and to try and curb
long-term debt. The commitments on the books
must be honoured and will be debentured.
Some very large capital projects are planned
such as the Adjala-Tosorontio Townline road
improvements, Alliston Waste Water Treatment
Plant, Dufferin Street culvert, 54+ addition at
the Recreation Complex, Mill Street Pumping
Station/Well (Tottenham), fleet and equipment
replacement,
Fire Station #3 expansion (Tottenham), Fire
Station #4 (Alliston), Finance Software Operating
System, as was well as our 2015 operating costs.
We pay the OPP, NVCA and collect money for
the two school boards as well as the County of
Simcoe.

Many other improvements throughout the Town

The three New Tecumseth PROBUS
Clubs will be joining with the other 235
Canadian clubs to mark PROBUS Month,
in March of this year. PROBUS Canada
has over 32,000 members and continues
to grow since its establishment in 1987
in Galt, Ontario. Originally initiated
by Rotary International to keep retired
Rotarians active, it has become a very
dynamic and sociable organization.
Our purpose is to provide retired and
semi-retired local residents with a venue
for social interaction and personal
development. Club membership is
usually capped to ensure an intimate and
friendly atmosphere. Although each of
the three local clubs has the same overall
purpose they have their own unique
personalities.

STORY
The Avalon Journals
An Inspector Calls
by Derek Bradley
T
he Avalon District Board of Education
invited parents, students and interested
taxpayers to a meeting to discuss the
issue ‘How to attract good teachers to the
public schools of the District’. The topic begs
the question ‘What is a good teacher’? It
reminded me how teachers were evaluated
in 'the old days’. The most significant
assessment was the visit by the inspectors
of the Ministry of Education. These august
personages were assigned by the Ministry
to descend on a school every three or four
years for one or two weeks to examine
everything from teaching to caretaking, from
classrooms to washrooms, from parking to
playgrounds. Naturally, all new teachers
were prime candidates for these ‘inspections’
and they were a matter of high anxiety for an
unfavourable evaluation could jeopardize a
neophyte’s future.
And so it was that in my first year of teaching we
were informed ‘that we were to be inspected’.
At the appointed time, I was notified that
Inspector H… would be in my classroom the
following day. I prepared for the event by
making sure my topic was curriculum based, by
reviewing my lesson plan (noting particularly
that I would take up the homework and give
an assignment for the next day’s class) and by
checking that my materials were all in order.
Using my wife as the student body, I rehearsed
my presentation and considered possible
weaknesses. She told me to be myself and I
would be all right.
The scene was set. The next morning I was
standing at my classroom door as the students
entered and the Inspector, without introducing
himself, took a seat at the rear and opened an
ominous black notebook. I started to explain to
the class who the stranger was but he raised his
hand dismissively, indicating that that was not
to be done.
We took up the homework. I presented the
lesson as planned. The students responded
well. The theme was a review of the final scenes
of Romeo and Juliet. I gave them opportunity
to work in their usual groups and devise an
alternative ending to the play which they
would then share with the class. They set to
work enthusiastically and I circulated the room
answering any questions. About five minutes
into the group work, there was a tremendous

“THWACK”! Some of the girls screamed and
everyone was in shock. The Inspector had taken
my yardstick and smacked it down with all his
force on one of the desks.
“There’s too much noise in this room,” boomed
the Inspector.
Everyone, including me, was taken aback.
The students took a moment to regroup then
settled down and with considerable trepidation
returned to the task in silent whispers. We
had time for two or three groups to give
their suggested endings. I gave the reading
assignment for the next day. The bell rang. The
class exited. And so did the Inspector.
I was told I was to meet with the Inspector
privately in the vice-principal’s office at three
o’clock. After a five minute wait, he came
in carrying his black book like a holy tome.
Without any preliminaries, he sat down opposite
me and opened his notes.
“Bradley”, he glowered, “that was a very
disappointing performance”.
I said nothing and tried to hide in my chair.

“I have here a list of my observations which
will be included in my report,” speaking as if he
was pronouncing a jail sentence, “firstly, your
window blinds were uneven; secondly, you
did not use any coloured chalk in your board
work, thirdly, there were too many pictures
on your bulletin boards and not enough print
material, fourthly, one of your students was
chewing gum, fifthly, you cannot maintain
discipline if you wander about the room dealing
with individual students … your place is at the
front … at the front, Bradley and sixthly, it is
inappropriate for a male teacher to remove his
jacket in the classroom.”
Everything he said was true … each measured
statement of my failings was like the tolling of
a churchyard bell as the final nails were driven
into my career coffin.
“But most of all, Bradley, that was the noisiest
classroom I have ever had the misfortune to sit
through. Your classroom control was atrocious.”
Here at least I thought I could offer a defense.
“But, Sir, I have been encouraging my students
to learn from each other in groups … I have read
where other teachers have had great success.”
“Bradley, stick to the tried and true methods.
Lead from the front … your so-called groups are
a waste teaching time. You’re frittering away
their time in rowdy, undirected chatter. In my
estimation, I found you too loose and not in
command of your classroom. You teach from
the front, Bradley, from the front. I will share
my findings with your Principal and give him
a copy of my report. That will be all. You may
return to your duties.”
I was crushed….totally deflated.
The next day the Inspectors departed and the
school returned to some semblance of normalcy.
The vice principal sent for me and I was
expecting another session of gloom and doom.
“Sit down, Derek,” he said in a calm voice, “I
understand ‘Old H…' gave you a rough time.”
“You might say so,” I mumbled waiting for the
worst, “He was not impressed”.
“What I am going to tell you is in strictest
confidence,” he continued, ‘and you must never
share this with anyone, especially
Bob.’ (Bob was our Principal).”
I did not know what to expect, but I agreed.
“Yesterday, Bob asked me to sit in with him
when the Inspectors gave their reports. He
thought it would be a good learning experience
for me. You probably don’t know that H…
was a military man. He expects everything by
the book. Any deviations are detrimental to
student progress. When H…finally came to
his evaluation of your work, Bob was furious.
In response to H…’s criticisms, Bob made it
clear that in his opinion your work has been
outstanding … that he totally supports your
teaching methods … that he couldn’t give a
damn about the blinds, the chalk, the pictures
or any of that crap. He said that your students
are developing individual thinking skills and
an appreciation for learning. The staff respects
you for your professionalism and he is going to
recommend you for more challenging teaching
assignments. He told H… that observing a
teacher for one hour without any background

is totally inadequate for making statements
that could destroy a potentially good teacher.
Further, he told him that he was submitting
his own report on your teaching and your
contribution to the school. Now you go back to
your classroom and keep up the good work. Try
not to worry about H…’s report. You’re going
to be a good teacher and we all think you will go
far in the profession. And remember, not a word
of this to anyone.”
At the time I did not understand the need for
‘secrecy’ but on reflection I realized that if my
principal’s action became general knowledge,
it could have been misunderstood by certain
persons. It was best to let ‘sleeping dogs lie’.
Bob was transferred the following year and
eventually became a superintendent. By the
time he retired, I was a principal myself and
at his retirement reception I took a moment to
thank him for his encouragement and support.
We never mentioned the ‘Inspector incident’, but
as we parted he said "You’re becoming a good
principal and remember if you’ve got good staff
never hesitate to go to the wall for them.”*

That was enough. We both understood the
implications. I keep a little card on my desk pad
that I refer to when I have a tough decision to
make. It reads ‘When it really counts, go to the
wall’.
*I researched the expression “go to the wall” and
found it had several meanings, but the intention
in this vignette is ‘when it is justified, do as
much as possible for the cause or the person’.

I
D SCO FOREVER
The beautiful
Andrea Freeman Day
as Marilyn!
They got it from both communities (Briar Hill
and Green Briar) at the Variety Night held in
November.
The evening started with Roger Setka leading
his band. Several different tunes and melodies
were played and sang by different members
of the group. The two communities banded
together to make a fun evening and there were
a lot of laughs. We were entertained by celebs
like Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Patsy Cline, Willie
Nelson, The Everly Brothers and others. It
was a real "variety" of talent, and you couldn't
beat the price at $2 per person. The evening
wrapped up with a dance.
Everyone involved hopes that next year, we
can entertain the community again and invite
others to participate in the fun.
A special thanks to Miles and all the
volunteers that made this event a success!

Green Briar Male Chorus
The chorus has enjoyed another successful
year of song and service to the community of
New Tecumseth. We are currently relaxing in
our annual winter hiatus while getting ready
for the 2015 season and our 20th Anniversary.
I extend an open invitation to all men within
"The Briars" to come out and enjoy good fun,
good fellowship and the joy of well performed
music.
We meet on Saturday mornings in the Green
Briar Community Centre from 9 until 11:30am.
Of course, previous choral experience is a
plus, but the main requirement is that you
enjoy singing and are able to carry a tune.
We will be starting our practices again in
March. If you are interested, give me a call at

Briar Hill Community Centre
Funding
As our Briar Hill community continues to grow,
your Briar Hill Community Centre (BHCC)
Board feels it is essential to clarify, for all
community residents, how your community
centre is funded and the importance of revenue
generated by activities and events.
Overview
In summary, the Community Centre building
is owned by Briar Hill Resident Services
Organization (BHRSO) and is leased to Briar Hill
Community Centre Corporation (BHCCC) on a
99 year lease for $2.00 per year.
The operation and maintenance of the Centre is
funded from three sources:
#1 Your contribution through the monthly
condominium fees, which range from $10 to $23
per month depending on the age of the home.
These funds pay for the basic costs of the Centre
(capital expense, lights, heat, security, cleaning,
maintenance and repairs and the salaries of the
Program Administrator and Custodian) and are
managed and entirely maintained by BHRSO.
The BHCC has no access to these funds.
#2 Also included in your common fees but
separate from the basic operating costs, you
contribute $1.00 per month to the Improvement
Fund which is tightly controlled and used solely
for major initiatives approved by all Phase
Presidents representing your Condominium
Corporation at a Community Council meeting
each fall for the next year. These funds are held
by BHRSO and accessed by BHCCC when
needed.
#3 Activities and events funded by participants
combined with private functions, and the
generous donations provided by our residents
provide the third essential source of funding.
This fund is managed by your BHCCC board.
Without these contributions there would be no
funds for replacements and additions to our

furniture and fixtures, decorations, replacement
of kitchen supplies, games room materials,
miscellaneous repairs and many more items
that maintain and improve the operation of the
Centre for the enjoyment of all the residents
A full accounting of this fund was provided at
the Associates Annual Meeting on
October 29, 2014.
Summary
BHCC Events, Activities, and Other Income
have contributed $14,3687.80 over the last twelve
months. These funds have made a significant
contribution to the financial health and
continued vitality of your community centre.
New Year's Eve Dinner & Dance
After a slow start on ticket sales, there was a real
possibility this event would be cancelled. I am
happy to report that 119 tickets were finally sold,
and the evening was a success.
The evening began with a glass of wine and hors
d'oeuvres, followed by 3 great door prizes, and a
perfect meal.
The DJ played to the crowd with classics from
many eras of music. We kicked up our heels on
the dance floor and were awarded with prizes
throughout the evening. We raised $780 on
'Share the Wealth' tickets with 50% of the sales
going to 3 winners. With a glass of bubbly in
hand and armed with party favours, we brought
in 2015 and then, kept on dancing.
Many thanks to the numerous volunteers who
helped us set-up and tear down. I was happy to
see several new residents attend the dance and
help out.
A big thank you to the businesses that donated
to the event.
Let's make the next dance a big success as well,
but please, make it easier for us by buying your
tickets early.
Thank you.

Art at the Community Centre
It is now 5 years since we began changing the
art exhibited at the Centre every month and
we have displayed about 50 paintings in this
time. From the comments I hear, it appears
to be a success. As we go forward into 2015, I
thank the following artists for allowing their
work to be exhibited for all to enjoy: Elaine
Hill, Osa Christensen, Jack Hendy,
Mack Ward, Christine Snipe,
Morrey Lawrence, Mary Lou Leitch,
Murray Velletta, and Pat McNeill.
We have had a great variety of subjects in
the paintings this past year and look forward
to seeing more. I enjoy and look forward to
meeting with the artists and arranging to
display their work.
Perhaps there are more Green Briar artists
who would like to loan a painting for a
month. If so, please contact me at 435-9133.
On behalf of all the residents and visitors who
have appreciated the generosity and talent of
the artists, THANK YOU.
I wish you a happy, healthy year in 2015.

Optometrists
LOOKING DEEPER INTO
THE HEALTH OF YOUR EYES
Your NTOC Optomestrists are pleased to be using a highly
innovative instrument called the Cirrus HD-OCT (Ocular
Coherence Tomography), the only one to be found in New
Tecumseth, for diagnosic testing. In addition to digital retinal
photography, this advanced-technology instrument helps your
Optometrist to clearly see the internal structures of your eye
like the retina and optic nerve, so problems such as glaucoma,
diabetes and macular degeneration can be managed in their
earliest stages and monitored for progression.
Advanced diagnostic scans that only take a few minutes of your
time (and never touch your eyes) provide your Optometrist
with direct cross-sectional imaging, or a “cutaway” view of
the layers of the retina and/or optic nerve. Other instruments
show the surface of these structures, but Cirrus HD-OCT also
shows what is below the surface, enabling your Optometrist to
accurately assess their characteristics. Examining your retina
or optic nerve without this technology would be like trying
to diagnose a broken arm without an x-ray, or a ruptured disc
without an MRI.
At NTOC, we are very proud to offer this technology to our
valued patients, as it is our belief that preventative
care and early diagnosis and treatment is of
utmost importance.
Book your eye exam with us
today. It is our mission to
offer you a unique and
memorable eye care
experience.
Evening and Saturday appointments available.

Our local host, the leisurely pace of

We literally circle the island heading

Derry, down to Killarney with a
delightful diversion to Limerick
enroute, then up and over to Kilkenny
only to arrive back in Dublin. Black
