I
Teachers, Families and Mountains
f you drilled a hole straight through
the globe from Maui, Hawai’i, you
would emerge in Ghanzi, Botswana,
Africa. If you then traveled about 2,600
miles north of Ghanzi, you would arrive
in Khartoum, Sudan, where I was born.
Although it seems like a long journey, it
is not, for the steps were incremental and
the people at every step made the journey
possible. I tend to measure places not by
their distances from each other but by the
qualities they have in common and the
characteristics of people who inhabit them.
Similarly, I measure accomplishments by
what continues on and by the quality of
relationships that one forms along the way.
Both my journey and my relationships have
been intrinsically woven with teachers,
mountains and the love of ‘Ohana, of
family. I am the youngest of five children.
My parents both started their professional
lives as teachers, and the importance of
education was their greatest
lesson to all of us. They sacrificed
everything to give us the best
education available in Sudan,
and when we exceeded that,
they moved to Libya, and then
sent us even farther away
to learn. Thus, by breaking
centuries of tradition, our
parents opened up a world of
possibility for all their children.
My oldest sister, Raga, was the
first Sudanese woman to study
abroad in the United States

without a guardian. At age seventeen, she
attended Mount Holyoke College, where
I also matriculated some years later. Raga
has continued to serve as the primary role
model for me, as we lost our mother to
cancer when I was just ten years old. Raga
is a beloved teacher, a visionary and still
my role model today.
I began my journey to the United States
shortly after ninth grade, when the sudden
death of my father promulgated a series
of events that brought me to Iowa with
Pete and Ellie Nowell, two of my American
teachers from the Oil Companies School
in Tripoli, Libya. To say that these two
teachers were responsible for everything
that happened for me afterwards would
not be an understatement, for it was Pete
Nowell who told me, at age fifteen, that I
should become a head of school someday.
Serendipitously, my sister Nouna was also
accepted to continue her studies at the
University of
Iowa at this time.
After a short
stint in public
school, I chose to
attend a college
preparatory
school in
Sheffield,
Massachusetts,
and Berkshire
School was
where I finished
my secondary
education. What
I didn’t recognize
We will open doors, tear down walls and reach far
beyond our physical borders, even as we reflect
inward to rediscover the heart of our mission.
at the time is the profound influence this
little school, nestled into the Appalachian
Trail, would have on me. I did not realize
that the golden thread of education was still
silently weaving its way through my life. The
teachers I had, the friendships I made there,
under the mountain, were going to become
lifelong mentorships that would mold the
very path of my life’s choices.
After graduating from Mount Holyoke
College myself, I joined my sister Nouna
in Iowa again. Nouna is the most
compassionate and giving person I know.
Both in DNA and in soul, she is the closest
person to me. Nouna was by now working
on her PhD in microbiology at the University
of Iowa College of Medicine, and I settled

in alongside her for three illuminating
years at the College of Law. Our big sister
Raga was working on her PhD in foods
and nutrition at our neighboring rival,
the University of Illinois. In essence, the
Bakhiet sisters married education. When
our brothers, friends and other relatives
were starting families and following more
traditional paths, we were collecting
degrees. But following social customs and
traditions is not part of this story…
Upon graduating from the University of
Iowa College of Law with a shiny new
juris doctorate, I found myself in the
unexpected position of not wanting to
become a lawyer. For the first time in
my life, I didn’t know what I wanted to
do, and I did not have a preset plan. This
was terrifying in a whole new way, and I
reached out in despair to my mentor, Bill
Gulotta, my former history teacher and de
facto surrogate father at Berkshire School.
Other than my own parents, Bill is the
person who has had the greatest influence
on my life. When I first arrived at Berkshire,

“I am delighted to have been chosen
as the 2015 recipient of the Betsy
Erdman Professional Development
Award. Seabury Hall has many talented
folks among its ranks, all of whom are
deserving of the award’s distinction and
notoriety, so it was indeed an honor to
have been selected. I plan to use the
gift to continue my interest in lutherie,
a craft that cultivates spiritual, physical,
and intellectual discipline. I am obliged,
and I thank the Erdman family for their
consistent and consequential support of
Seabury’s faculty.”

The Linares ‘Ohana Endowment Fund
Former faculty member, Vinnie Linares,
has included Seabury Hall in his estate
plan. Upon his passing, a portion of his
estate will be donated to Seabury Hall
to create an endowment to support the
performing arts department.
As a passionate thespian, it is Vinnie’s
desire to have his endowment fund to
support, enlarge and perpetuate the
performing arts department (including
theater, music and dance) at Seabury
Hall with the goal of providing access to
the performing arts to as many students
as possible.
Mr. Linares was compelled to make this gift for three
reasons. Mr. Linares has a long history with Seabury Hall
that started in 1974 when living in Truk, his friends sent
their children to board at the school. When he moved
to Maui he became involved with the performing arts
program at Seabury Hall. His early memories are having
performances in what is now the school’s library. It
was there that he gained his great appreciation for the
performing arts faculty. The exemplary work of the staff
is what compelled Mr. Linares to make his gift. Lastly, Mr.
Linares was impressed with the talent of the students at
Seabury Hall.
Dr. Wayne Dyer
D r. Wayne Dyer & Seabury Hall
Parent Organization Endowment
Prior to Dr. Wayne Dyer’s recent passing,
Seabury Hall was honored with a gift from
him to create an endowment for students
receiving financial aid. He partnered with the
Seabury Hall Parent Organization, donating the
proceeds from his I Can See Clearly lecture on
campus. SHPO will continue to contribute to
the endowment. The selection of the student
will be based upon his/her extraordinary
demonstration of compassion towards his/her
peers and the Maui community.

Alumni Present Rising Seniors
with Scholarship Awards
November 18 • 2015
Each year the Seabury Hall Alumni Association
(SHAA) hosts a charity golf tournament to raise
money for Athletics and the Financial Aid including
the Rising Senior Scholarship Awards. These scholarships acknowledge, encourage and reward rising
seniors (current 11th grade students) who have
demonstrated leadership, fulfilled their academic
potential, and served their community during their
high school career. This past spring a panel of alumni
including SHAA President, Francesca “Chesa”
Cipro ‘99, Kaimana Lee ’03 Brummel, John
Bendon ’96, Josh Circle-Woodburn ’99, Kimo
Haynes ’84, Nick Meyer ’04, Katrina Niehaus ‘00,
and Sara DePalma Smith ‘92, reviewed written
applications and conducted in person interviews
before making the selection of six exceptional
juniors with Rising Senior Scholarships. The alumni
scholarship award funds are the result of selfless
and tireless efforts of the SHAA Board, the Golf
Committee, and the generous sponsors of the
Seabury Hall Golf Tournament.
All alumni welcome. RSVP to [email protected]

Class event planner and guru, LaVelle Byers
Allen, found a home on Rockaway Beach, OR
for our annual reunion trip. LaVelle had been to
Maui in June. She and Michelle Steuermann ‘71
provided a bounty of Michelle’s award winning
coffee. LaVelle said the best moments were, “the
meals, the stories, the laughs, the drives to other
beaches, the meeting up with Barbara “Barb”
Howell ’71 again, the meeting of Lynn Johnson ‘72 Connors and Christy Carpenter ‘72
Foytich for the first time, the finding of the key,
the painting of the rock, the collection of photos,
etc, .....it was all so easy”.
Kicking off the week of fun — with LaVelle
Byers Allen, Ginger Blomberg ‘73, Monica
Reynolds Gardner, Candy Rutherford ’71
Hibner and Sarah Bott ‘80.
Kathleen “Katie” Hull Rutledge has been
exploring new challenges since retiring in 2013.
She is a student in a senior acting troupe mentored by Greater Tuna author/actor Joe Sears.
She is a volunteer with United Way, a Career
Tech board, Mozart Festival. Travel destinations
in the last year included the 50th Seabury reunion on Maui, Singapore, Bangkok, Chiang Mai,
St. Thomas and the south of France. Perhaps of
greatest note is the celebration of 40 years of
marriage punctuated with much laughter and
happy times with Rich.
After a week of fun at the Oregon reunion
Monica Reynolds Gardner was off to Florida
for mild temperatures, sightseeing and golfing.
Amanda Mitchell Barnes is living in England
and writes of initiating a walking challenge with
her husband. “George and I attempted a walk
along the North Devon and Cornwall coasts.
George managed about 140 miles with our dog.
I managed about 30 miles. So now we are taking
occasional days to walk from Hampton Court to
central London. The bit we did in late July was
from Hampton Court to Teddington Lock. It was
gorgeous. Beautiful parkland on the edge of the
Thames.”
Susan Capp Tokoro of Honolulu said she
was sorry to miss the Oregon reunion but was
enjoying being on a family trip to Virginia, North
Carolina and Florida. She wrote “Hope to see you
all at the Kauai Reunion in 2017, if not sooner”.
Joan Goodale Evans still enjoys her work at the
Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens. She and her
family are active in local fun walks. The Classes
of ’70 and ’71 are looking forward to the Kauai
reunion in 2017 that Joan has graciously offered
to host. More good times ahead!!
Lynne Lusby Plaugher writes from vacationing
in Europe, “We spent 3 days in Norway; Geiranger, Alesund, and Bergan. A beautiful mountainous
country with many, many islands along the coast,
some of which are connected by underwater
tunnels.”

single day on Oahu that included two tennis
matches (lost first, blew away second in central
Oahu), attending granddaughter Reign’s hālau
contest at the Blaisdell Arena, then with her
daughter Laulea went to Nuuanu to clean up
before going to the windward side of the island
to attend her niece’s wedding party. After a few

Recently, some of the members from the Classes
of 1970 and ‘71 along with Lynn Johnson ‘72
Connors got together for a reunion on the Oregon coast. This included Debbie Holden Tracey
who is now retired from a career in teaching and
lives in Olympia, Washington where she kayaks
with friends and enjoys traveling to Kauai. Barbara Howell Shephard resides in Seattle and
loves her work in the registrar’s office at the local
high school and is presently planning another
daughter’s wedding for this October. Pat Hunt
Passon lives in Beaverton, Oregon where she
has continued her financial planning business of
25 years and also enjoys reading and the cooler
northwest. We all laughed hysterically as we read
Pat’s “Hakilo O Seabury” article that she wrote 45
years ago describing everyone and their prom
dates. Christy Carpenter Foytich attended
Seabury in 8th and 9th grade and was a wonderful addition to the group. She has been retired
since 2014, and she and her husband moved to
Oregon City after living on Oahu for the last 40
plus years. Candy Rutherford Hibner lives in
Gilbert, Arizona and retired once in 2008, but is
back teaching again part time in a private school
as this is her dream job after 30 years in public
education. Ginger Curtis had planned on attending the reunion but got very lucky and was
granted a hiking and camping pass to Yosemite
National Park where she and daughter Kelsey
along with sister Kathy “Kate” Curtis ‘74 spent
several days.

The Oregon reunion group could not keep off

great chat with Michelle Steuermann who
recently won 3rd place for her wonderful Ulupalakua home grown coffee. We had it every morning for breakfast. We also chatted with Mary
Milnor who lives on Oahu and has continued a
longtime friendship with Christy Carpenter. We
also connected by phone with Erica Anderson
‘70 who tells us that Siri Anderson is now retired from her job of being a school librarian and
both still live on Molokai. Dana Butts Nemeth
owns/manages 2 medical weight loss offices
and also owns/manages a dental practice that
her staff run for her in San Diego. She is active
with her horse in show jumping competition
who shows much promise. Brian Jenkins lives
on Maui where he practices law but often travels
between Maui and the Big Island enjoying the
beauty and fun of both islands. Edie Jones
Bikle continues to run her shop Taro Patch
Gifts in Honoka’a and a small farm. With all the
duck, chicken and peacock feathers available,
Edie has become an avid featherworker making
many items for the shop. Carol Salisbury joins
the large group of Big Island alumna residents
and often visits Barb Howell in Seattle. She has
put her beautiful inn, Waianuhea, up for sale in
hopes of pursuing a quieter life style. The Class
of 1971 is still looking for Leslie Claytor True

whereabouts.

fighter. Kim has been married for 33 years and
remains a humble state employee (commercial
property manager).
Joe Hartley and his wife Vanessa hosted the
attendees at a “pre-reunion” party at their
fabulous home in Kula. That set the pace for the
weekend of festivities. Greg Getzan and his
wife Jill hosted a BBQ dinner at their wonderful
home in Makawao ending a spectacular reunion

of retirement or anything other than her 64

with paper.
From across the world, Susan Ashley hails from

and simply loves living in Europe. We were fortunate that Susan was able to make the trek from

Candy Cypher-Golden still lives in Kahalu’u on
O’ahu. After 39 years of flying, she still is very
happy being in the Hawaiian Skies. Her marriage
to her husband, Steve, is wonderful, and her
children are doing well. Her oldest, Spring, is
doing a fellowship as a MOHS doctor (skin cancer
surgery) at OHSU in Oregon. Her youngest, Kai,
graduated from Columbia University in 2013, is
living in Manhattan, where he is in his last year
of law school. Candy misses her Seabury family
tremendously, treasuring those years at Seabury
Hall and missing her classmates a lot.
Janet Davidson Allaway plans to write articles
for publication based on her experience with
Lyme disease. Jan and husband Bill’s youngest
daughter, Jennifer, just graduated from Willamette University and has moved to New York to
attend NYU this fall for an MFA in Video Games.
Their middle daughter, Katherine was married
last September in Tilden Park and has a great
computer job with her degree from UW. Their

the end of September – it is the 7th William H.
Allaway (all first born sons of first born sons).
So grandma-to-be is busy preparing the house
for their new grandchild and baby- sitting duties
to come.
Megan Crouse and Chris have returned to live
on Maui and have just bought a townhouse
condo in Pukalani. They plan to renovate and
move in by early next year. Megan writes that
she still loves her job as a social worker with
Hospice Maui.

recently made history
when they fought like
champions to win the
gold medal at the inaugural Aloha State Games
Senior Olympics in Pickleball held in Kona (13
games in the blistering heat and humidity, and
in double elimination). Laurie and Megan have
been playing this game since “small kid days”
and warmly renamed it Pukaball. Laurie and her
awesome husband Pocket won the bronze medal
in the mixed tournament. Laurie said it was so
thrilling to finally show off their skills and play in a
real tournament for a game she has always loved.
Gus Russell reports that he has been living in
Eugene, Oregon since arriving there for college
in 1975. He has been married to Sam (Noreen)
Russell for 24 years. They don’t have any kids,
just one spoiled Lhasa Apso named Kai. These
days Gus mostly plays jazz and R&B music as a
free-lance keyboardist and leader of a few different ensembles. He plays for dance classes at the
University of Oregon, playing hand percussion,
flute and his own electronic music to accompany the classes. He is still teaching piano at his
own studio and through the local community
college, as well as some varied studio gigs.
And lastly, yours truly, Cheryl Gima Holderbaum,
has finally graduated with a BA this past spring.
It only took me 40 years to get it together. I am
finally pursing my life-long dream and will be
attending grad school this fall.
So until the next time, the Class of 1975 is signing
off but still rockin’ on…

Elizabeth James Johnson has received the distinguished honor to serve as a Harvard Marshal
for the convocation of freshmen at Harvard on
September 2015. She writes: “I had seen Harvard
graduates in my class sporting these Top Hats
at reunions, displaying the honorary title of
Marshal. These special hats are an honor, worn
by people who give to Harvard. I imagined what
these classmates of mine had given to stand out
and be honored and I felt humbled. While I give
to my alma mater, I had always felt that I was
only able to “give” with a small g. Mostly because
I am an educator myself and don’t make a gajillion dollars like some of my fellow classmates
who are thus able to “Give” with a capital G. But
I stepped up with my small g, by offering my
time. I volunteer for Harvard as an admissions
interviewer and write up detailed accounts of my
meetings with high school seniors who applied
to Harvard. You could have knocked me over
with a feather when I received the invitation to
serve as a Marshall. Needless to say, my husband
and I are off to Cambridge. I am thrilled beyond
measure and will report back after the festivities. I guess giving is giving. No matter what our
circumstances (or capitalization), we can all reach
out a hand and make a difference.”

Talking Story
— Continued from page 3
newly orphaned and alone,
Bill and his family in effect
“adopted” me. I played
with his children and
became friends with his
wife, Debi. My hanai family
and I had stayed in touch
throughout college and graduate school,
and in my hour of crisis, Bill invited me to
return to my alma mater to teach a couple
of classes. I walked into a classroom in
1993, and I haven’t walked out yet.
I walked
into a
classroom
in 1993,
and I
haven’t
walked
out yet.
Administration came to me somewhat
by providence as well. At one point, my
alma mater needed a dean of students.
Conveniently, I was already teaching
there, and I was considered appropriate
for the job. So at age thirty-two, I sat
on an all male, all white administrative
team, some of whose members had
been my own teachers when I was a
student. To their credit, most of those
gentlemen were respectful, attentive
and considerate. From them, I learned the basics
of school administration, and discovered that I
had a knack for it as well. I survived the trial by
fire and moved on a wiser and more seasoned
professional.
However, after six years in the Berkshires, the
call of family was getting stronger. Once again, I
moved west to be near my sister Nouna, this time
(thankfully!) in San Diego, California. I returned
to full time teaching then eventually moved into
administration again, serving as the assistant head
of La Jolla Country Day School for several years.
As the school grew and
changed, I realized that I
wanted to lead a smaller
school, where those
meaningful and enduring
relationships that changed
my own life’s course can
be forged. Three years
ago, I began the search for
“my” school. Unbeknownst
to me at the time, I was
embarking on the
greatest professional
development experience
of my career. As my
ideas of becoming
a head of school
developed, clarified and
transformed, the search process itself
immeasurably enriched and prepared
me for what was to come.
Seabury Hall and I found each other
at exactly the right moment. We both
stand poised to burst into a future
that hasn’t even defined itself yet. The
students, the faculty and staff, the
parents, the trustees, the community
and I will be building the future
together, as we grasp the developing
needs of a school on the wings of
positive change. As we embrace the
evolution of our students, we will
learn to adapt and transform, even as
we nurture and maintain the ties that
bind our community together. We will open doors,
tear down walls and reach far beyond our physical
borders, even as we reflect inward to rediscover
the heart of our mission. Our Maunalei campus
will continue to be of service and to benefit all
of Maui, Hawai‘i, and the world. As I learned all
those years ago under that other mountain, across
the Pacific and across a continent, education
is for life, not just for school days. It is for the
benefit of our communities and our global family.
Seabury
Hall and
I found

We both
stand

future that
hasn’t even

Now, cradled into the side of majestic
Haleakalā, my Seabury Hall ‘ohana and I are
poised to accomplish
great things.
