A Lasting Gift — 50 Years Later
M rs. Katherine McGrew
Cooper purchased Maunalei,
the home of Dr. & Mrs.
William Baldwin, in the 1940s.
Upon her death in 1958, Mrs.
Cooper bequeathed her five
acre estate, Maunalei, to the
Episcopal Church, to establish
a girls boarding school.
Attending “Aunt Kate Day”
Assembly in February 2014.
Travis and Ali Thompson,
Mrs. Cooper’s Granddaughter
Because of her foresight and
through her
generosity Seabury
Hall was born.
The home and five-car garage
were converted to classrooms
and a dormitory. In the fall
of 1964, Seabury Hall began
instruction in grades 7-10 with
an enrollment of 51. Tuition
was $700 for day students
and $2,400 for boarders. The
Episcopal Church chose the
name Seabury Hall after Bishop
Seabury, the first Episcopalian
bishop in America. In 1967, the
first class of 14 girls graduated
and the school became coed.
Today, our campus covers 78
acres and has a student body
of 440 students. Aunt Kate’s
(as she is referred to on
Cooper House
Handbells 1967
campus) home, Cooper
House, is the centerpiece of
the campus and contains

incredible role model for us all.
She embraced the philosophy
that it is more blessed to
give than to receive. Her
legacy has touched over
2,000 students in the past
50 years and will impact
thousands more to come.

hen I ask faculty, parents, alumni, and students if they know the
mission of Seabury Hall, they quickly respond with the words, “mind,
body, and soul”. The words mind, body, and soul are our guiding principle
that we educate the “whole child”. This statement drives our commitment
to allowing young people to seek their passions and excel in the
academic, artistic, and athletic programs in the school.
Another way of expressing our mission is that we educate both the
“head and heart”. Seabury Hall has had a long tradition of embracing
community service as a component of the education program. Although
mandating community service as a requirement for graduation,
our greatest success comes from those programs that are conceived
by students, supported by the school, and propagated through the
commitment of faculty mentors and committed young people.
Seabury Hall
…
a long
tradition of
embracing
community
service
As I reflect back on my 20 years at this outstanding school, I remember
the “movers and shakers” in the student body who have developed
programs that have made a significant difference both locally and
globally. Some of these students were: Kyle Ellison ’02,
Tiffany Chou ’04, Clairesse Brogiotti ’04, Zach Pezzillo
’11, Kelsey Greenway ’12, and Ariella Brandon ’13 among
many others. These students have been responsible for
developing programs that have served our community
for many years such as Dancing Palette, Best Buddies, and
Art with Heart, and the Halloween Party and Prom for
the developmentally disabled. Seabury Hall students have
served meals at the homeless shelter for 14 years and
raised tens of thousands of dollars for world disasters.
What these students have learned is that giving defines
us as people of compassion and that there is more joy
in the act of giving than in receiving. Our commitment to service and
supporting students in this endeavor has inspired our graduates to
continue service long after they leave Seabury Hall. This commitment
not only makes them better people, it makes the world a better place.

A dash of Maunalei Magic at the
Alumni Keiki Holiday Party
Cooper House was decorated to dazzle for the annual Alumni Keiki
Holiday Party in December. Santa Claus and his team of reindeer landed
on the roof and slid down the bannister to visit with 48 alumni and staff
children. Our very special young guests feasted on holiday treats and
sweets, and made homemade crafts in the Dining Hall.
Please join us this December
