Care is provided without charge and occurs across the community, not only in free clinics but also in hundreds of private doctors’ offices, in hospitals and in imaging centers. We Care is grateful for the spirit of volunteerism and the dedication of our many donors, partners and friends. Steve Prom was a visionary leader who played an integral role in the growth of Our Board of Directors, staff and patients are so grateful for the dedication and compassion that our Jacksonville community continues to demonstrate. We are preventing colon and breast cancers through early detection and screening. We are diagnosing and treating behavioral health issues, treating fractures, cancers, acute illnesses and chronic diseases. Access to care continues to be a great challenge, but our dedicated network of volunteers and donated services is truly changing lives and health behaviors. The past two years have experienced tremendous growth for We Care Jacksonville. The number of patients served has increased to more than 10,000 and donated care is now valued at $16 million annually. Ninety cancer patients were treated during the last 18 months with services that included surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. As you will read in this year’s report, we have been working to create a true network of care for Jacksonville. We have been assisted by our Board of Directors and the leaders of all of Duval County’s hospitals who have joined our Strategic Development Council. New partners, such as United Way of Northeast Florida, the Florida Blue Foundation, the Jessie Ball duPont Foundation, the City of Jacksonville and many other generous philanthropists, are investing dollars and resources to build infrastructure and to increase the diversity of services for We Care patients. This is how we will continue to grow We Care as a sustainable community resource. We are grateful to all of our community partners — and look ahead with great anticipation for the continued growth in access to care for our most vulnerable populations — as we work together to build a healthier community. When he began having severe pain in his stomach, he went to the I. M. Sulzbacher Health Center, where the cause of his pain could not be readily identified. Calvin was referred to We Care Jacksonville, where again a doctor could not immediately diagnose what was happening, but who called for tests and a CT scan. We Care facilitated 10,000 visits for specialty service in 2011 and 2012, including those related to cardiology, gastroenterology, gynecology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, There was both good news and bad news from the CT scan. Trotter, MD, led the charge to help the most vulnerable patients by opening the first primary care clinic, Christ the King. Dr. Trotter was the first physician to recruit primary care, specialist and clinic volunteers for this purpose. Taking Control of a Chronic Disease – Mike Mike is a diabetic whose insulin-dependence cost him his 30-year Philanthropy Facts career as a truck driver. Unemployed and without insurance, Mike did not know where to turn for medical care and readily admits that his diabetes got out of control. Beaches Community Healthcare – A Sulzbacher Center Clinic referred Mike to We Care Jacksonville, where he met case manager and registered nurse Tina Crooks. “Tina worked with me right away to get me back on track with my glucose readings and medications,” said Mike. In constant contact, Tina became coach, educator and cheerleader for Mike as he worked to control his diabetes. Tina helped Mike understand what his testing results meant and what lifestyle changes he needed to make to stay on track.
