- on the fourth or fifth Sunday of a month at

There will be exceptions due to the church
calendar
How do you book a baptism?
How do we book our wedding?
- please contact our Parish Administrator in
the Church Office, who will discuss with
you availability of dates and times; will talk
to you about the qualifying connection you
have with the parish; and will take you and
your fiancé’s details;

METHODIST CHURCH
Minister
Revd. Andrew Biggs
March/April may have been our coldest months but May certainly provided a wide variety
of weather. No sooner had those dreaded words “hosepipe ban” been uttered after the
glorious first Bank Holiday weekend, than temperatures plummeted and the skies
opened. I have developed a “Pollyanna” approach to our County’s weather and find
myself (desperately) playing her “glad game” on a regular basis. For example, “I’m glad I
don’t have to water the garden”, “I’m glad I don’t have to go out today” and my personal
favourite, “I’m glad I haven’t turned the heating off yet”...
One event we were all glad about at BK Methodist Church was the attendance at our
Spring coffee morning in April. A lovely atmosphere, meeting up with our village and Link
friends and £108.55 raised, £55 of which was donated to the MS Centre. Thank you to
everyone who organised and attended this event.
One final, but very important, point, members of our congregation and ecumenical friends
who attend our Emmaus course have been under the weather over the past few weeks.
On behalf of all of us, we wish you a speedy recovery, you are very much missed and
you’re in our prayers.
God bless.

Thank you to Claire Lewis for the Phoenix card sale and for the kind and
generous donation, which we will give to one of our favourite children's charities
The Toddlers’ Summer outing will be on Tuesday 16th July to Court Farm, Banwell.
Just a reminder: No Toddlers on Tuesday 28th May (half-term) back on Tuesday 4th June.

Judy Barwell
Many of you will have been saddened to hear of the death of Judy Barwell last month.
Judy was a well-known figure often seen round the village with her faithful companion,
Barny the cocker spaniel. Judy was a wildlife enthusiast and spent hours out in the fields
around Brent Knoll with Barny. She would often tell me about the deer or the foxes she
had seen. She knew the names of many of the wild flowers and plants and was always
full of enthusiasm for our wonderful countryside.
Judy was for many years a member of The Somerset Wildlife Trust, her son told me that
she had done lots of fundraising for them. At the moment, the trust is running a Barn Owl
Project which is in its second year. They aim to get a Barn Owl Box in every parish in
Somerset to help these magnificent birds make a comeback after years of declining
numbers. In the last 80 years the UK’s barn owl population has dropped by 70%. Brent
Knoll already has its barn owl box from the Trust (Does anyone know where it is?) but I
thought it would be a fitting tribute to Judy if we could put up another with her name on it.
It’s too late to get a box up this year that Barn Owls might adopt. What we need to do to
get the ball rolling is to raise about £60 for the box or buy the plans and make one. Then
we need a suitable site for the box. I will contact the conservation officer Chris Sperring
and we should be able to get a qualified person to advise us on where to place it.
Caroline has agreed to let me place a Barn Owl Clock in the Post Office and sell raffle
tickets to win it. If you want to know more about the Barn Owl project, just log onto
www.somersetwildlife.org, it’s under ‘Things to do’.
So if you think you might have a suitable place for a nest box, please get in touch and if
you want to make a donation or have any fund raising ideas please get in touch. Let’s do
Judy and Barny proud.

Brent Knoll Flower and Art Show
This year the Brent Knoll Flower Show is returning in spite of all the weather can do! It
will be held on Saturday 29th June starting at 2pm. To make it an even better day, the
Parish Hall Committee is joining in with the Flower Show group to provide a joint Flower
and Arts Show. As there are now three rooms available at the hall, the Main Hall will be
used for the flowers, vegetables and produce stalls, the Nuttall Room will be serving tea
and cakes and the Jubilee Room will host the arts and crafts, which, we are delighted to
tell you, will include pictures from the students at Brent Knoll Primary School. There may
be some slight changes to this, dependant on how many entries are forthcoming, but to
find out how you can participate, please pick up a leaflet at the Post Office or from Jackie
or Tony Gilbert (760 956). If you are interested in displaying pictures, sculptures or other
arts and crafts (this is non-competitive), please contact either John Page (760 986) or
Alan Castle (760 424).

At our April meeting we enjoyed an amusing afternoon when Susan Marshfield shared
some of her experiences of doctors and hospitals. She was able to bring humour into
almost any circumstance she encountered.
In June we will have the opportunity, with the help of Clive Hammond-Lovatt, to try our
hand at some willow work. Members are asked to bring an apron and a pair of secateurs
for their own use. We feel sure that the demonstration and workshop will prove to be
interesting.
Next meeting – 19th June – Clive Hammond-Lovatt – Willow Demonstration
We are a very friendly group and we welcome new members of all ages. We meet on
the third Wednesday of every month, so just come along to a meeting or contact
Joy Collett - 01278 760 458.

WI CRAFT GROUP
We will meet this month on Monday June 17th at 2.30pm in the Methodist Church school
room.
We are a small group of ladies who knit and natter. We knit for the Mission to Seafarers
and the Sweep charity which sends items to Romania.
We welcome new members. There is no need to be a member of the WI. This month I
have received donations of knitting for both charities, for which we are very grateful.
For further details please phone me on 760 691.

Quotes and Tips from the Farmer’s Wife
June
June 17th – St Nectan’s day, patron saint of Hartland.
The June moon is called Strawberry or mead moon.
Haloes around the moon or sun means that rain will surely come.
When clouds appear like rocks and towers.
The earth will be refreshed by frequent showers.
At midsummer, fires were lit on all the hills of Mount Bay and others. Local people would
gather at a selected spot to foretell the future by the number of fires they could see.
Similar fires were lit on the Isle of Man in the belief that the smoke drifting over the fields
of crops and cattle would protect them from disease.
If you have a small garden or can no longer cope with a big vegetable plot, why not plant
a few lettuce and vegetables between your flowers, they will blend in quite well, and you
have the pleasure of fresh produce in small quantities, to pick when required.
A glass oven door is easier to clean using a damp cloth dipped in salt.

Music on the Green – with ‘Sodz Law’ - July 20 , 2013
This year’s Music on the Green is on Saturday 20th July. Due to last year’s success, we
have again decided to go for a band playing music from the 60’ to the present.
‘Sodz Law’ are a local Blues Rock band, who will get you up on your feet dancing the
night away.
To make the evening even more ‘family friendly’, we have decided to keep the ticket
price for adults to only £8, admission for accompanied children under 14 is FREE, so
you can really make it a family night out, with great live entertainment in your own village!
Tickets are available from the Village shop or ring Eddie on 760 308.

Brent Knoll House Histories
Early Maps - 8
As I mentioned last month, before continuing to investigate further west along the
village roads, I intend to have a look at the field systems around this part of Brent
Street, as some substantial differences occur between those on the north side of
Brent Street and those on the south. I will also have a look at how well the
boundaries today compare to those of two hundred years ago. Both features provide
clues to the way that
our
village
has
developed
over
many hundreds of
years.
The first thing that is
notable is that the
field systems to the
north of the street
lead right up the
side of the Knoll and
are long and narrow
plots.
This is
particularly apparent
in Burton Row, but also on the lower parts off Brent Street. There it is obvious that
some fields have become shortened and others merged, or both, and that many of
the changes are prior to the early 19th century map shown here. In fact, it is likely that
these narrow strips are very ancient boundaries, which provided access up the hill
from the side of Brent Street which is not liable to flooding during the winter months.
So, why was that access so important to the villagers?
Above these fields, on the flat bailey of the hill, there are many strips forming the
ancient open field system of the village, where everyone would grow their subsistence
crops. For a village which would often become an island in the marsh, this flat land
was absolutely vital. Whether this was a two-field system, or a three-field system is
difficult to see as some of the strips may already have been converted to pasture by
the time this map was drawn (though I suspect it was a two field system).
On the south side of Brent Street, by contrast, the fields are obviously for summer
pasture (the animals would probably winter on what I have called the bailey), but are
each of very individual shape. The
reason for this is almost certainly that
they were at one time marshy land,
which has been reclaimed piecemeal,
as and when they became dry and
usable.
In the 7th century, Brent Marsh is
mentioned in a document which
describes its boundaries. The Channel
is one, the River Axe another, but the
one that is most interesting to us is the
River Siger.

Brent Knoll House Histories - Continued
This river dried up when its mouth was silted up by the River Parrett sometime before
the Domesday Book in 1066, but its route is still discernible from the air or the top of
the Knoll. The picture shown here is an aerial view, from Google, turned into a black
and white picture. Across it, from the lower right corner towards the top left can be
seen a number of rectangular fields. These are where the river formerly flowed and
demonstrate its considerable width. Approaching the railway (the straight vertical line
to the centre left) a couple of fields can be seen to have been recently separated from
the rectangles and added to their bank side neighbours. Note that these are the only
rectangular fields, which implies that the other fields were reclaimed haphazardly
whilst these were divided up on a more rational basis. That suggests the other fields
were created before the draining of the levels by the Abbot of Glastonbury in the 13th
and 14th centuries, although that is the period when the ubiquitous rhynes would have
appeared along their edges to enhance drainage.
Returning to the 1811 map above, one other curious feature can be seen to the
bottom left where Brent Street joins Station Road. An arc sweeps from Crooked Lane
to Brent Street enclosing a number of plots numbered from 713 to 721 on this map.
From this more modern map it can be seen that this is ‘East Town Gutter’, which was
a main drain, being fed by a number of smaller
drains from Brent Street and Station Road.
It would be interesting to see what this area looked
like before the Enclosure Award of 1801 (based on
an Act of Parliament of 1799). After then, and
maybe since an earlier Act of 1845, it became the
area set aside for the landless poor as ‘field
gardens.’ These could not be larger than a quarter
of an acre and became what we now call allotments
(they were ‘allotted’ for that purpose). Most of the
area, except for the two plots associated with the
house of Hannah Sandy mentioned last month
(which have a drain enclosing them on one side and
Brent Street on the other), were used in this way, as
was another plot on the south side of Crooked Lane at the time of the Tithe Map, but
not apparently in 1811 (not shown here). However, by the time of the Tithe Map they
appear to be mainly in private hands.
Last month I referred to someone named William Emery in
Tithe Map Plot 719, which has subsequently become
‘Applegarth.’ Fairly recently other houses (‘Byfields House,’
etc.) have been built in the vacant plot next to it. To this day
there is a drive going into ‘Applegarth’ (who reclaimed their
frontage to the road) which cuts across the corner of
‘Woodgate’ and from here it is obvious exactly how that came
about – it was the final part of the drain before it starts running
alongside the road (but has now been covered over) which
drew the boundary between the two properties.
This final picture shows that there is today still one allotment
remaining in Station Road (in the corner of the large field).

Women’s Society
Our thanks to Dot and John Hatfield for inviting us to their home
for our meeting at the end of April. Unfortunately the Speaker that
we had booked was unable to come as she was unwell so we held
an impromptu “quiz and coffee evening” which was a real success.
On Thursday 30th May we have planned a visit to Banwell Caves. We will meet at
The Caves at 7pm for a guided tour and a short film. If the weather is pleasant, we
can also have a walk through the forest and visit the house and tower memorial. The
cost will be £5 per head and if there is anyone who would like to join us on this visit,
you would be very welcome. Please telephone Julie - 01278 751 229 or Ann 760 148
so that a lift can be arranged.
For our meeting on June 27th, we hope to have a walk along the Strawberry Line
followed by a meal at The Woodborough Arms.

The June meeting was the AGM. In the past, the AGM has been in
November, but from now on it will be held in May. The President and
committee remain the same. We also discussed the resolution which
will be voted upon at the national AGM in June, the resolution being the
decline of high street shops. We agreed it was a sad state of affairs and would do our
best to support the local shops.
The Flower of the Month competition was jointly won by Eileen Goundry and Phyllis
Loynd.
We are now looking forward to our 86th Birthday Party on June 12th when we will be
entertained by Raymond Budd who was a Black and White Minstrel.

WHERE IN OUR VILLAGE
Each month the BKN will have a small
picture quiz – no prizes, but I hope you
may enjoy guessing where the object
shown is located within the Parish
boundary.
Last month’s object can be found on the
end of the house as you enter the drive
of West Croft Cider – perhaps it should
be changed to an apple now!
This month’s object is quite a historical item now –
representing a time when advertising was being used by the council to offset street
furniture costs. Do you know here it is?
The answer and another object will be shown next month.

Brent Knoll Local History Society
Twenty people enjoyed a varied programme of local history subjects at 7.30pm in the
Jubilee Room on Monday 29th April. This programme was ably presented by John Page
in his interesting and authoritative manner. We were shown a series of unusual and
bizarre paintings by a former local resident Cyril Smith (died 1975). Cyril lived at Croft
Cottage, Brent Street for several years. His colourful and quirky paintings showed
aspects of life in the village at the time. One of his subjects was the ‘Ordinary’ bicycle,
which we would think of as ‘Penny Farthings’. He insisted on calling them ‘Ordinaries’ to
distinguish them from many ‘safety’ designed bicycles of the 1870s. Cyril formed an
‘Ordinary’ Club whose members could often be seen cycling along Brent Street and
along the A38 at weekends. Some of these ‘Ordinaries’ can be seen today in Weston
Museum. What was even more extraordinary about the paintings was that they were
done directly onto the interior walls of his house and also on an outside wall in the yard.
Later occupants painted over them but fortunately a pictorial record of them was saved.
We were also shown antique mousetraps whose designs had not changed since Bronze
Age times. The pictures showed a wooden block with an arrangement of trip wires.
Fiendishly clever traps, baited with cheese, they tempted the mouse only for its head to
be caught in a noose and hence it would be garrotted. Not only that, a nail was so
positioned that it would pierce the mouse’s skull whilst it was being garrotted. The mice
had little chance.
We saw a selection of maps of the area which showed how, over thousands of years, the
sea levels changed over this area, the sea sometimes getting as far as Glastonbury. For
much of the time Brent Knoll itself was an island surrounded by marshes. This would
prove a good place to live as it would be difficult for enemies to discover tracks to a
settlement. The Romans called the hill, ‘Mons Renarum’, (The Mount of Frogs). An
aerial view of the Knoll showed where stone had been excavated which would have been
used on St Michael’s Church. One map also showed the outline of the River Siger which
was mentioned in last month’s report.
The evening was rounded off with a talk about 17th century Hearth Taxes Returns during
the reign of King Charles II. There we saw the names of people living in the village at the
time. Some of the names are still to be found in Brent Knoll.
It was decided, for the May meeting, that a guided tour of Wells Cathedral would be
organised. Details of this and the society may be gained from John Page 760 987 or
Brian Freestone 760 759.

GRANTS PAVE WAY FOR ELECTRIC MAT WINDER
After successfully obtaining generous grants from Sport
England and the locally based, Nuttall Trust, Brent Knoll
Short Mat Bowling Club has raised sufficient funds to
purchase a new electric mat winding machine costing
just over £5,000. The old manual mat winder is heavy to
operate and the new machine was needed to ensure all
members are able to wind-up the playing mats, after
completion of play.
The Club meets at the Brent Knoll Parish Hall every Monday between 2 and 4pm. It
has around 15 regular players and local people are invited to come along and try this
challenging sport. No previous experience is required and the Club has a small stock
of bowls that can be borrowed.
The attached photo shows some of the Club members inspecting the new machine at
the Brent Knoll Parish Hall.

ZAP your way back to fitness with the Zing App!
The new Zing App is a simple way to keep track of all your physical activity
throughout each month. Simply sign in, pick your activity and log how many minutes
you've done.
You can log your activity when you’re at the gym, when you've finished your swim or
when you’ve completed your walk. It’s now easier and quicker to log your activity
minutes where ever you are! There is no need to sign on to your computer to log your
minutes - just use the new App!
The Zing Somerset App was launched in March 2013 to aid the people of Somerset in
starting and sustaining physical activity. It’s a great way to record your weekly activity
and gives motivation to continue. The App assists the Zing Somerset website that
has been in operation for just over a year. You can also log your minutes on the
website, but in addition, the website sets challenges, provides news items, videos,
you can join a ‘zing team’, gives details of sessions and offers that are happening
around the county, but most importantly lets you search for opportunities to participate
in sport and physical activity in Somerset. It’s simple: just type in your post code and
the nearest sports facilities and sessions show up on a map.
One Zing App user said, “I downloaded this to start capturing how many hours I am
actually active for. I can add the time as I walk off court if I like and see it in graphical
form or statistically straight away. Looks funky, always got my phone and ergo my
stats with me! What more could a competitive person ask for!”
For more info. about Zing Somerset, log on to the website - www.zingsomerset.co.uk
You can also download the App through the website. The App is compatible with most
phones and tablets using iOS or Android.

JUST LAUGH AT THE FUNNY SIDE OF LIFE
A month or so ago, a certain Major from Brent, visited me with good intent;
To frame some 'photos, old they were, but he knew exactly what I meant.
He tied his dogs to the garden seat, whilst we discussed the intended feat
After a while..........
Bells rang, ‘phone/ door, for goodness sake, what on earth were we to make,
Girls at the door, blushing well, two dogs on leads and looking to tell,
Sheila at the front gate with seat held intact, what on earth was the fact?
Well the story is, these particular golden Labradors just simply wanted to go home.
They dragged the garden seat from my front garden to the outside of the school.
Held up the traffic on Brent Street, is that against the rule? NO ONE WAS HURT!!!
Seats a bit bruised though.

Lympsham Gardening Club
At our May meeting, Steve Hughes from the Royal Society for the
Protection of Birds gave a very interesting talk, illustrated by slides,
about Ham Wall which is 3 miles west of Glastonbury. Ham Wall
was an area of old peat diggings which were recreated as wetlands with reed beds to
encourage all sorts of wildlife and birds. Bitterns had not been recorded in Somerset
for 40 years and in 2008, 2 nests were discovered and since then they have
increased. In April this year over a hundred species of birds were sighted, some were
residents and some that ‘stop over’ during migration. In Winter over a million
Starlings use Ham Wall for their nightly roost – a sight to be seen as they all flock
back together at dusk. Otters and Water Voles are also residents. Visitors are
welcome all year round and although parking is limited at the moment, it is hoped that
work on a new car park will start in August of this year. Compost made from the
management of the wet lands is available – so take your own bags.

Firstly an apology! Last month’s easy puzzle was invalid because there were two “4s” in row
D and column 7. The culprit was number 4 in cell D7. Some of you may have worked out
that D7 should have been a “1” (my human error!). So this month’s easy one is last month’s
corrected. 11 persons solved last month’s Hard Sudoku (with one newcomer). They were
Klaus Brenner, Jenny Butters, Pauline Chadwick, Mac Hares, Liz Ibrahim, Chris Marsh,
Frankie New, Peter Osborn, Margaret Rogers, John Spiers, and Caroline Sturgess. Chris
Marsh won the ballot.
Send this month’s solution to 48, Brent Street or to

Meet James
We spent a most enjoyable evening in the Parish Hall on Saturday
11th May, to meet and listen to James Heappey, the Conservative
candidate for our Wells Constituency.
He brought his delightful wife, Kate, with him and he has a young
son of 11 months.
The evening wasn’t the usual “run of the mill” political meeting,
James spoke extremely well and was obviously well aware of the
issues which effect Somerset and it’s inhabitants.
He is obviously a very intelligent man and has certainly seen life in
the raw, having had two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq.
He answered our questions on numerous subjects in understandable language and kept
to the question asked. He never lost my attention for a moment. He is already working
very hard, meeting as many people as possible; in fact, he was a real breath of fresh air.
We also enjoyed an excellent buffet supper: if you didn’t go, you missed a treat.

A reminder for gardeners
It’s Just a reminder re the Fete plant stall. Hopefully you have
produced some stunning plants.
Could you deliver them to either Copse Hall or to the green on the
day please?
Will definitely need help on the stall as I am one legged, at present.
See you there.

More Ramblings of a Rambler
The cold and wet winter has been forgotten, the sun has appeared
from behind the clouds and the gardeners are already saying, “we
could do with some rain”.
The appearance of the sun has brought with it the insects; this in
turn brings activity from other animals. Clouds of midges and gnats
are accompanied by the Swallows, who after flying thousands of
miles, arrive right on time. The speed at which they negotiate small openings in
outbuildings is mesmerising. Our pony, who shares his stable with nesting swallows,
stands and allows jackdaws, who are also nest building, to pull hairs from his back.
Although late, there is plenty of blossom on the fruit trees, this, with help from the
bees, will set into fruit. It’s nice to watch the fruit mature and then eat it, or to show it
in the village flower show. I’ve been lucky with apples, pears and plums, but the birds
always beat me to it when it comes to harvesting the cherries. While walking dogs
across fields covered in dandelions, I found one with two heads, this is the second
double headed flower that’s usually single headed I’ve found this year, the other was
a daffodil in Ball Copse wood.
The report above was written two days ago, since then winds have blown the blossom
from the trees, chimney sweep’s cancelled and fires relit, but the gardeners have had
their rain.
The Rambler
“I’ve been thinking, if we all evolved from apes and monkeys, how is it we still
have them around us?”
“I expect some take longer to evolve, you been looking at your family photo album
again?!”

The Origins of Phrases and Sayings
Those everyday sayings, where do they come from? Take “Here’s mud in your eye”.
This is generally regarded as a friendly toast towards friends and guests wishing them
good luck etc. In fact, this expression is anything but friendly, as it can be traced back to
horse racing. This taunt suggested that fellow competitors would be behind you and
having mud thrown up by your horse, thus losing the race.
What about the expression, “He is on his high horse”. This generally refers to a person
who appears dismissive and aloof, looking down upon the rest of us. Medieval knights
and nobleman used to wear magnificent suits of armour, which could weigh up to three
hundred pounds. This resulted in them having to ride specially bred horses which would
be much larger than normal animals and therefore able to carry the extra weight. In
those medieval times it was not uncommon for noble gentlemen to ride through English
towns and villages, looking down upon the locals riding ordinary sized horses, later on in
our history, politicians would parade in ceremonial processions mounted on large horses,
thus leading to the expression “he’s up on his high horse again”. This phrase can be
found for the first time in “Kelly’s” collection of Scottish proverbs 1721. Additionally in
similar vein, we might today tell someone to “come off it”, meaning we do not believe
them. This expression began life as “come on down off your high horse”.
Following on in a similar theme, we can now look at the expression to travel on “Shanks’s
pony” this of course means not to have transport at all. In other words we will be making
our way by foot. A variation is to travel by “Shank’s mare”, meaning much the same
thing. This saying originates from the fact that “shank” is that part of the leg below the
knee and above the foot, so to travel via shank’s pony is to use your legs and walk. The
word shank can be traced back to the old English word being “sceanca” being leg bone,
and the verb shank or shank it, can be traced back in old English, as a dialect expression
for travel on foot.

Brent Knoll Parish Hall AGM
Chairman’s Report
It is remarkable to think that only 12 months ago, the builders had only just started to
break ground on the new Jubilee room and we were sorting out the Mortgage!!
The last year has been particularly busy both in terms of fundraising and spending!!
We have continued to hold the successful monthly Bazaars and saw the unveiling of the
Jubilee Collage at the fête: we provided teas at the open gardens, and the Music on the
Green successfully transferred into the hall. We had to have repairs carried out to the
main hall floor and had the successful opening of the Jubilee Room by Tessa Munt MP
and Frances James. We applied for and secured an extension to the Hall licence for the
new extension and bought new Cutlery, crockery, water heater and fridge for the hall
kitchen. Mac Hares was busy building new cupboards for the hall crockery and glasses,
safety cage for the boiler and dado rail around the Jubilee room. We also purchased a
new software package for hall bookings and purchased 5 new large tables and trolley.
The Autumn saw the much enjoyed Fun Day with St Michael’s event, the Harvest Supper
and then the BAD Pantomonium! In the New Year we held a successful More Crumbs
event thanks to Brian Freestone and a wonderful evening with Jay Jerome. We have just
purchased a projector and sound system for the Jubilee room and held a film night.
All the above doesn’t just happen and I would like to thank all the committee members
who have worked so hard during the year and all the residents of Brent Knoll who have
continued to support us by attending the events.
Let’s hope this year is just as successful!

BRENT KNOLL JUBILEE FÊTE
This year the Brent Knoll Village Fête will be held on Saturday, the
8th of June. Please do make sure you have this date in your diary
and we will look forward to seeing you at the BIG event of the
village calendar. We will, as usual, start proceedings at 2pm.
During this last month we have had excellent feedback from stallholders, so there should
be a great display of differing items for sale. We are always on the lookout for new
helpers, but have had some positive responses in this area too. So our thanks go to both
of those groups. We are still open for a few additional stallholders and for any
volunteers, so please do get in touch if you have not done so yet. Volunteers to help with
setting up and closing down on the day, or helping to run some of our own stalls, or
helping with some of the small jobs required before the day, are always welcome and do
tend to enjoy the experience.
One item that we would like to promote is the fancy dress theme for the day. This year
we have chosen “Heroes” as the theme, which we hope will attract quite a few children
(and adults, of course) to dress up as their favourite character. Last month I called it
‘Superheroes’ but we took off the ‘super’ bit to broaden the scope, so, for instance,
footballers or ballet dancers may fall into this category better. If you are dressing up and
would like your hero to be announced during the afternoon, please let me know on the
day.
On the day we will have our regular events – the well-loved school dancing group and
the Chalice Morris Men – both perennial favourites. We have also asked Mark Bailey to
help us by running some children’s sports in the central arena. As there will be no ‘Fun
Day’ this year we thought that many would like to have a chance to join in actively and
we are most grateful to Mark for arranging this. A new feature this year will be the
appearance of a crazy golf course at the top of the green, which will be another activity to
add to the sports, coconut shy and games being played around the village green.
Finally, as our guest opener this year, we are delighted to welcome Sally Wingate. Do
come and show your appreciation for all the work she has done for the village over many
years.
Please let me know if you would like a stall, or are willing to help in any way on 760 986
or [email protected].
John Page, Chairman Village Fête Committee
Somerset Wildlife Trust
The Somerset Wildlife Trust is extremely grateful for the support that was
given towards the Plant Sale and Open Garden held at Rookery House, the
Causeway, on May 4th.
The magnificent and record sum of over £3,000 was raised and all will be used in
Somerset “Protecting Wildlife for the Future” - the logo line of the Trust.
Thanks go to everyone who was able to help either by providing plants, cakes and
raffle prizes and by assisting in the organisation for the event and on the day, and by
coming to buy. Over 300 people attended and enjoyed the garden and refreshments
in, on the day itself, good weather. Thanks also to Gill Isgar and Mark and Ricky
Popham for the use of the field as the car park - this of course is absolutely essential
for this event at this location.
This was tabled as the major fund-raising event for the Mendip Hills Area Group of the
Somerset Wildlife Trust and this event has achieved that goal.

Brent Knoll Weather Report – April 2013
The cold north-east wind that brought such a chilly end to March
continued for the first week of April, a consequence of high pressure
sitting to the north of the UK and pushing the procession of Atlantic lows
well to our south, crossing France and Spain. We were treated to some
clear blue skies during this period, but temperatures barely reached
double figures and there were several night-time frosts. The air was very
dry, with humidity sometimes dropping below 50%, and during this early
part of the month there were no April showers – in fact, no rainfall at all.
During the second week of April, the Atlantic lows began to push their
way north again. This brought a welcome respite from the cold wind – there were no
further air frosts after 7th April and temperatures rose into double figures at last – but
of course the low pressure systems brought rain as well as warmer air. The 0.4mm
(0.02in) that fell on 9th April was the first recorded rain since 21st March, and by the
end of the second week we had recorded 13.4mm (0.5in). The combination of
warmth and moisture meant that things started growing, and it seemed that Spring
had finally arrived.
The second half of April brought sunshine and showers, but the showers were few
and generally light – by the end of the month we had recorded just 19mm (0.75in) of
rain, well below the average for the time of year. Incidentally, it was in April last year
that the deluge of 2012 began. During that month we recorded 116.6mm (4.6in), or
six times the total for April 2013 - a good example of the extraordinary variability of
British weather.
April had a little sting in the tail, with the return of high pressure and those wretched
north-easterly winds right at the end of the month. The days were longer now and
daytime temperatures held up, but the nights were still cold enough to catch out the
unwary gardener.
As well as being a dry month, April was unusually cold with an average temperature
of 7.8°C (46°F) – the same value as April 2012 and about 1.5°C below normal. Last
year the low average temperature was due to the persistently dull (and very wet!)
weather, but this year the cause was pretty much the opposite, with cold, dry air
keeping the thermometer down. With our weather, you never know what’s coming
next.

VILLAGE AGENT UP-DATE
As I have now been in the job for five months, I thought it would be a good idea to report on my
progress.
I have been contacted by a few people to date with widely divergent issues – this is encouraging
and it has brought home to me how many people there are in my parish clusters who are caring
for friends and neighbours. Caring doesn’t necessarily mean being on call in a person’s home
24/7, but shopping, driving to appointments, feeding the cat, sorting out the mail and so on. If
this is you and you come across a problem that it causing you concern – then contact me – I
may be able to help or, as they say, “know a man (or woman of course) who can”.
I have come across a couple of things which might be of interest. Tea parties – this is a scheme
currently operational in Bristol whereby a group of, usually senior citizens, meet at one another’s
homes once a month and the host provides tea, maybe cakes or biscuits; it’s a social occasion.
I have been informed of a book club in Burnham and a confidence- building course. One other
activity which might appeal is a knit and natter group – no explanation needed, but could be fun.
If any of these things are of interest then please contact me for details or to put your name on a
waiting list. Of course, not everyone has transport and any activities need to be co-ordinated, so
there is a real need for volunteers – such valuable people and not easy to find, but very
rewarding work ,and it can make a real difference to the people less able to get out and about.
So, if you enjoy tea and cakes, knitting, or reading books and would like to help organise a
group, please contact me.
Finally, I would like to thank the many people who have helped and supported me through these
first few months as a Village Agent.
