rospecting for treasure is a fourth-generation family passion for
James and Vince Gifford, and they’re justifiably proud of their
“Made In America” Tesoro Electronics products. Their father, Jack,
founded Tesoro in a Phoenix, AZ, garage in 1980—the result of his
affinity for electronics combined with the treasure-hunting legacy
handed down to him by his father and grandfather.
2
At the turn of the 19th century when gold fever was running high,
Morgan Gifford, Jack’s grandfather, moved his family from their
ranch in Idaho to Oregon, where he started a gold mine. Prospecting
was a family affair, with Morgan’s sons Aubrey and Norval (Jack’s
father) working in the mine together. During harvest season, though,
the family’s focus changed; they labored as farm hands and traveled
across Idaho, Montana, North and South Dakota. It was during one
of these harvest times that Norval met his future wife, Mayme. They
soon married, and Norval moved his family to Arizona, where he
worked for the Inspiration Mine in Miami, one of Arizona’s richest
copper-mining areas.
Norval and Mayme had three children: Glenna, Gloria, and Jack
(who was born in Miami, AZ). After several years of mining and as
his family grew, Norval relocated to Phoenix and took a job with
Arizona Public Service (APS). When Jack graduated from high school,
he tried several different jobs before becoming an Electronics Engineer.
Before long it was clear that Jack’s inherited talent for creating
electronic instruments had grown – along with his love of the historic
City of Prescott – into a true calling. Jack’s vision for a company of his
James & Vince Gifford
own was fulfilled in 1980, when with the help of his wife Myrna,
Tesoro Electronics was founded. It took nearly a decade more before
their dream of living full-time in Prescott became reality, but in 1991
the Gifford family - and Tesoro - were finally home.
Just as his father and grandfather had done, Jack shared his love of
the hunt for treasures with his sons James and Vince. He involved
them in every aspect of the family business, and the boys couldn’t
have hoped for a more dedicated teacher. They learned all about the
rich history of mining and prospecting, the wide variety and evolution
of tools used over the years, and how radically things had changed
since their great-grandfather Morgan Gifford had begun his Oregon
gold mine so many years before. Jack taught James and Vince the
importance of quality and meticulous attention to detail in Tesoro’s
manufacture of metal detection instruments, keeping them abreast of
all the latest developments in technology. The boys were hooked. In
2004, Jack and Myrna were finally able to retire, knowing that the
family business would now be in the capable hands of the sons who so
fully embraced their twin passions: treasure hunting and Tesoro.
With James and Vince at the wheel today, Tesoro – the name that
means treasure – remains an industry leader, with an exciting array of
quality metal detectors, all backed by lifetime warranties. Jack and
Myrna’s sons continue to carry the family legacy with pride, sharing
the pleasure of modern-day treasure hunting with their growing
family of satisfied customers worldwide.

W
ith Tesoro’s revolutionary new detector,
the Tejón, you will be able to scan clearly
and deeply. Like its namesake, the badger, the Tejón
will go to incredible depths to find your targets.
It features a high output transmit oscillator to push
the signal deeper and an increased gain for sensitivity
to smaller items. We have also added a dual
discrimination that is set by the user and an easy
to use trigger switch that can quickly change from
discriminate to the alternate discriminate to pinpoint
mode without slowing you down.
A Tesoro detector that is
designed to make your old
sites seem like new again.

The DeLeón’s display screen is one
character high by eight characters wide.
It is larger and easier to read than the
Cortés display.

The DeLeón is a Target
Identification Detector or
T.I.D. The DeLeón is designed
as an easy to use, turn-on-andgo detector. The faceplate has
only four controls: Sensitivity, Discriminate, Threshold and a
Mode Switch. It uses the same circuitry as the Cortés, so you
can expect the same depth and sensitivity from the DeLeón
that the Cortés is already well known for.
Starting from left to right on the illustration, you will
see that the DeLeón has a Coin Depth reading, a five segment
bar graph and a two digit Target ID Number. The bar graph
shows several categories for ID purposes, but we recommend
that it be used with the ID Number for the most accurate
information.

The µMax detector that you have been waiting for is here –
the Golden µMax. This is a detector that only Tesoro could
build. Full size depth, sensitivity, Four Tone Audio ID and
a user adjustable Notch Filter Discriminate all placed into
the lightest detector housing on the market. At less than
2-1/2 pounds, the Golden µMax lets you control what you
want to find.
Our adjustable notch window lets you, not the engineers,
decide how to pick through the pull tabs to find the nickels
and gold rings, while the ED 120 discrimination knocks out
all of the nasty iron. The tone ID gives you a great idea of what
your target is. The Golden µMax will help you define your
targets and make better use of your detecting time.

Bridging
the Analog and
Digital Worlds
To complement the digital display, we have added two
separate features. The first is a three-position notch filter
discrimination. Notch filter discrimination allows you
to knock out a portion of the trash targets without
affecting other valuable targets.
T
The second is the Sum Mode. While in the Sum
Mode, the Cortés averages coil sweeps and activates a multi-tone
ID. In use, the coil sweeps should be shortened to about 2” to
4”. As the microprocessor compiles the target data, the ID tones
change. When the tones stop changing, the Cortés displays the
most accurate target identification available.
In the Discrimination Mode, the Cortés uses a factory preset
ground balance. So there is no need to fiddle with a bunch of
controls.
For the more experienced user who may be searching for treasure
in tougher surroundings, the Cortés offers an All Metal Mode
that has a fully adjustable ground balance, which can be tuned to
meet almost any soil condition imaginable. While in the All Metal
Mode, the display continues to show all target information.
he Cortés combines user-friendly analog controls with state
of the art digital signal processing to create an easy to use
Target Identification Detector. The Cortés doesn’t need several
books or videos so you can “unlock” its secrets. Simply turn it on
and you’re ready to hunt.
The simple and functional meter gives you extensive amounts of
information to work with. The top row’s alphanumeric read out
gives you target information in the broadest strokes. All targets
fall into one of four categories: Iron or Foil; Nickel, Pull Tab,
Ring; Zinc Penny, Screw Cap; Copper Cent, Silver Coin. This
brief information leads you to the lower row’s more detailed data.
The most prominent feature on the lower row is a nine segment
bar graph. It shows all of the information that the detector saw
during the complete sweep of the coil. Full sweep data is helpful
in determining possible treasure/trash masking and odd-shaped
iron. We have also added a peak signal ID Number. The Cortés
displays the largest part of the signal as a two digit number from
0 to 95. Iron reads as 0 and copper and silver coins read 95.
By clearly defining the two ends of the scale, we were able to put
higher resolution into the middle range. This is the area where
pull tabs, nickels and gold rings intermingle. By using the bar
graph and peak ID number, you are able to identify pull tabs and
other trash that is native to your local area. Taking the time to
learn these pesky targets will ultimately lead to better finds and
less trash digging.
From the beginner to the pro, the Cortés is able to meet the
needs of any detectorist. Simple analog controls, easy to read
digital meter, preset or manual ground balance all housed in a
package that weighs less than three pounds with batteries.
Who knew that full function target ID was so easy or fun!

he Tiger Shark uses microprocessor technology to create a true dual function
machine. In Normal Mode, the Tiger Shark works like any other Tesoro detector.
On land, it can be used for coin and relic hunting and even gold prospecting. By using
the four controls on the outside of the housing, you can fine-tune your detector to handle
whatever conditions you are working in.
Working in the wet salt area is where the Tiger Shark shines. In wet salt conditions,
changes in the conductivity of the sand and surf cause most of the problems.
The Tiger Shark uses a completely different set of internal settings in the SALT Mode
than in the NORM Mode. There are no special controls or techniques to remember.

working wet salt beaches. Their circuitry and single loop coils will not
see changes in salt-water conductivity that can drive a VLF-style
detector crazy. Add Tesoro’s exclusive interchangeable Printed Spiral
coils (available in four sizes) and you create a fantastic PI detector.

he Silver Sabre
series has had a very
long history with Tesoro
Electronics. It was first
introduced in 1983. In a
time when “lunch box” detectors were
the norm, the original Silver Sabre was perceived as a toy unit.
Advertised as “strong, simple and silent,” the Silver Sabre has
gone through many changes over the years. The Silver Sabre
Plus added a No-Motion All Metal circuit. The Silver Sabre II
added a new plastic housing and new Hybrid Circuit
technology. Several years ago we introduced the Silver Sabre
µMax with an incredibly small housing and Max Boost
technology. Many men bought one for their wife and wound
up using it because it worked as well as any other detector.
We have decided to bring the Silver back full circle to where it
started. The original Silver Sabre was a turn-on-and-go
detector with Silent Search Discrimination and All Metal
Modes.
The Silver µMax uses a
microprocessor to control the
audio tone and battery test.
It comes with an 8” concentric coil
and our latest plastic faceplate. The
new Silver µMax returns to its roots
and offers strong, silent, and
simple operation once again.

he Tesoro Compadre was designed with the idea that less is more. This modest machine can do a lot of the same things that
its bigger brothers can do. It works great for coin hunting, competition hunting and relic hunting, but it does it without any
excess knobs. Switch on the detector and you’re working in a silent search, motion all metal mode. The farther you turn the knob,
the more discrimination you can bring to bear on those trashy sites.
The Compadre has it all. One knob simplicity for the beginner and high gain circuitry and the famous Tesoro ED-180
discrimination for the advanced user. If one detector can do all of this, maybe less is more.

Tesoro Clean Sweep
It’s a simple fact: The more ground you search, the more treasure you find.
The Clean Sweep uses widescan technology to provide tip to tip sensitivity over its
entire 18” length. A wider detecting sweep means less time over unproductive ground
and more time finding the goodies you want.
18” x 3.5”
When you have a lot of ground to cover and not much time to do it in, better make it
a Clean Sweep.
• Full coil length sensitivity
• Works on all standard and pulse unit Tesoro detectors
• Comes with scuff cover and lower pole
• Widescan design resists changes in mineralization
• Easy pinpointing
