ASPHALT GREEN MASTERS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER MARCH 2012 The Water Log D OMINIC LATELLA will be joining the team as head coach on March 12. He has spent the last seven years coaching masters swimmers in the Bahamas and in the Washington, D.C. area, most In this Edition recently at the Curl-Burke Masters program. After graduating in 2005, he spent two years coaching a small, dedicated group of masters swimmers in the Bahamas. The Big Swim “Those two years in the Bahamas really developed a lot of my joy of coaching,” he said. “It made me love working with masters swimmers.” He followed that with coaching jobs at Fort Belvoir Masters in Alexandria, Va., and Curl-Burke Masters in the D.C. area. His primary goal at AGUA is to create a more unifed team through regular social events — like once-a-month Thirsty Thursdays, bagel breakfasts after Saturday morning workouts and post-open water swim barbecues — and increased participation at local and travel meets. Dominic Latella His second goal, he said, is to host masters swim meets at Asphalt Green, ideally a short course meet in the fall or winter and a long course meet next summer. 1 ASPHALT GREEN MASTERS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER Jeremy Tillman, who has helmed the team as interim head coach since Craig's departure, was a six-time Massachusetts state champion in high school before heading off to swim for Princeton University. A sprint freestyle and breaststroke specialist, Jeremy was a four-year letter winner at Princeton and was twice named to the All-Ivy Team. After graduating in 2005, Jeremy moved to northern California and swam for Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics while completing a masters degree in civil and environmental engineering. In 2009, Jeremy was the USMS National Champion in the 100 freestyle for the 25-to-29 age group. MARCH 2012 Jeremy Tillman [email protected] He has been coaching swimming since 2003, when he served as assistant head coach for the Campo Cabana Club Swim Team in California. In 2006, he also worked as head coach of the Palo Alto Junior Varsity Swim Team. Jeremy began his career outside of the pool with a stint as a structural engineer in Los Angeles. In 2010, he returned to the East Coast to work as a project manager and director of coach operations for CareerCore, an online career services company. He is currently a founder and CEO of NexReel, a startup peer-to-peer promotional platform that helps individuals and businesses aggregate their social media content for marketing purposes. Glenn Mills Glenn Mills brings almost three decades of coaching [email protected] experience to AGUA Masters, where he will continue coaching the noon workouts. A standout swimmer in high school in Cleveland, Ohio, Glenn set the 100-yard breaststroke national high school record in 1980. Later that year, he won the 200-meter breaststroke at the Olympic Trials but did not get to compete at the Olympics when the U.S. boycotted the Moscow games. 2 ASPHALT GREEN MASTERS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER MARCH 2012 He continued his swimming career at the University of Alabama, where he was the NCAA champion in the 200-yard breaststroke in 1983. He currently holds the masters world record in the men's 45-49 200 SCM breaststroke. He began his coaching career in 1985 as a volunteer assistant coach at Cleveland State Univer sity. Since then, he's held coaching positions at Cleveland Heights High School, the University of Maryland and the U.S. Naval Academy. In 2002, Glenn founded Go Swim Productions, through which he has produced 35 instructional DVDs. His website, goswim.tv, features instructional videos, drills, and sample workouts. Aquapalooza Join your teammates as we take the Flushing Meadows Corona Park Aquatic Complex by storm at the Aquapalooza SCM meet Saturday, March 10. Mail-in entries must be received by 6 p.m. on Monday, March 5; the online registration deadline is midnight on Thursday, March 8. The Big Swim We would like for you to join us as a volunteer at our 17th Annual Big Swim on Saturday, April 28. The Big Swim is a free competitive swim meet for New York youngsters aged 6 to 12. Each child stands on a diving block, hears the starting gun, and swims a 25-yard lap, racing to the fnish with the roar of the crowd urging them on. Every child experiences the fun, ca maraderie, and sense of accomplishment that swimming in a meet provides. Last year participation was one of the highest ever and we hope to have another record-breaking Big Swim this year where every child leaves a winner and is awarded a medal. This year’s Olympians and elite athletes will include Rowdy Gaines, Canadian Olympian Nikki Dryden, US Olympic Diver Chris Colwill, members from the USA Diving National Team, and many more. 3 ASPHALT GREEN MASTERS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER MARCH 2012 Volunteers are needed in all areas — including registration, timing, distributing T-shirts, and handing out medals — and are all led by a friendly Asphalt Green staff member. Volunteers should arrive no later than 9:30 a.m. for check-in and can expect to fnish the day by 4:30 p.m. Every volunteer will get a Big Swim T-shirt, lunch and a chance to bring a smile to a child’s face as they Swim Big!
