ALEX’S MAKE-A-WISH
DAY WITH THE CANUCKS
VIDEO
Alex Skiffington, an eight-year-old
battling a life threatening illness, had
a wish to meet his favorite hockey
player: Daniel Sedin.
Together with the Make-A-Wish
Foundation, the Vancouver Canucks
helped grant Alex’s wish and provided
him with an experience he will never
forget.
After flying to Vancouver from St.
John’s, Newfoundland, Alex was
welcomed onto the team by Coach
Willie Desjardins. He sat nestled
between Henrik and Daniel as they
laced up their skates and prepared to
take the ice for practice.
Playing for the Blue Team during
scrimmage, Alex scored a spectacular
5-hole goal against Ryan Miller.
After practice, Henrik, hoping to
become Alex’s new favorite player,
gave Alex his 700th career assist puck
that he had earned only days before.
When asked about his day, all Alex
could say was that he was completely
overwhelmed. He also said he nearly
fainted when he met Daniel!
Leaving the arena with a team signed
stick, jersey, and that all important
puck in hand, it was easy to see that
Alex’s wish had been granted far
beyond what he ever could have
expected.
So, who is Alex’s favorite player now?
He says he has three: Daniel Sedin,
Kevin Bieksa, and of course Henrik
Sedin.

TELETHON NIGHT

The year’s annual Canucks for Kids Fund
Telethon presented by Chevrolet, was
held on March 24th. Raising over
$630,000, this year’s telethon raised
the second highest amount since its
inception 25 years ago.
Hockey Night in Canada hosts George
Stroumboulopoulos and Scott Oake
were on site to host the event, while
various celebrities, family members,
and members of the Canucks
organization - including Ryan Miller,
Francesco Aquilini , and Trevor Linden took donations via phone on the
celebrity panel.

annual Canucks Autism Network’s
Family Festival in celebration of World
Autism Awareness Month.
On February 28th Canuck Place families
gathered at Rogers Arena for an
afternoon of skating, face-painting, and
hot chocolate at the annual Canuck
Place Family Skate.
Jacob Markstrom and Bo Horvat joined
the families As well as long time
participant of the skate, Fin.
Not surprisingly, there was no shortage
of smiles at this always popular event.

attendees had fun participating in a
pledged walk, family-friendly activities,
and listening to live entertainment.

cauldron, lit by Trevor Linden, kept
everyone warm.

On May 10th the Vancouver Canucks
teamed up with the BC Lions,
Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Vancouver
Canadians, and the Canucks Autism
Network (CAN) for the 3rd annual CAN
Sports Day.
275 children with autism and their
families were invited to BC place for a
day of sports and fun alongside their
sports heroes.
Representing the Vancouver Canucks
were head coach Willie Desjardins,
Eddie Lack, Kirk McLean, Jyrki Lumme,
and Fin.

CANUCKS FAMILY EDUCATION CENTRE GRADUATION
The Canucks for Kids Fund has made a commitment to literacy in B.C and is a
proud partner of the Canucks Family Education Centre. With its largest
graduating class since its inception, CFEC is celebrating the high school
graduation of 36 students this June. Congratulations to all the graduates!

FIN’S FRIENDS VISIT ROGERS ARENA
One lucky class registered in the Fin’s Friends program won the opportunity to
take a behind the scenes tour of Rogers Arena. After taking an exclusive tour of
the arena where their favourite team plays, the excited group of students from
Hollyburn Elementary School headed to the visitors dressing room for story time
with Fin.

GRASSROOTS HOCKEY
FEMALE JAMBOREE

A celebration of girls’ hockey, the Female Jamboree provides an opportunity for
over 150 female minor hockey players aged 5-13 of any skill level to play with
other girls from around the province in a fun, fair and non-competitive
environment. The Jamboree is not a highly competitive tournament; rather, it’s
a fun day of learning more about hockey and making new friends. All players
receive equal ice time and the emphasis is on fair play and sportsmanship.
The Female Jamboree has been around for over 10 years and has been a favorite
of many girls who enjoy the game of hockey. Guest speakers from all walks of
life give presentations on leadership, self-esteem and other interesting topics
relating to young girls involved in sports. This year’s Female Jamboree featured
talks from UBC Thunderbirds Stephanie Schaupmeyer and Nicole Saxvik, as well
as Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist Meghan Agosta-Marciano.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
HAMMER’S HEROES UPDATE
Thanks to your nominations and Dan’s generous donations, more than 41
amazing kids were recognized for their community efforts this past season.
Collectively, these young individuals have raised almost $1 million dollars for
charities across B.C. Thank you Dan and thank you to all the Hammer’s Heroes!
50:50 PROGRAM UPDATE
This season the Canucks for Kids Fund 50:50 Program raised $3,265,830, half of
which goes directly to the Canucks for Kids Fund. With the introduction of
Pointstreak 50:50 technology and the addition of credit and debit cards, the
program was able to surpass the previous season’s total by $596,000.

Fin stopped by the Teck Celebrity Pie
Throw on May 7th at the Vancouver Art
Gallery. He caught up with his friends
Buddy the Miner, Sunny Bear, and Casey,
an ambassador for BC Children’s Hospital
Foundation, for some pie-throwing fun.
On April 30th Fin sported his jeans
and joined Sunny Bear and Buddy
the Miner at the Vancouver Art
Gallery in support of the BC
Children’s Hospital Foundation’s
25th annual Jeans Day barbeque.
