"A people which takes no pride in the noble achievements of remote ancestors will
never achieve anything of worth to be remembered with pride by remote descendants."
Lord Macauley
Dea r Membe rs :
Our one-day Seminar on July 18, with Mr. Leon S. Hollingsworth, Genealogist and
Historian cf DeKalb County, Georgia, was a great satisfaction to your president and
board members. The attendance was gratifying and We do appreciate the support given
us. We want to thank the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity for the generous loan of the rooms.
Members were equally helpful in sharing the responsibility of making our seminar a
success. Our thanks to Mr. S. Caya Phillips and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L.
Phillips, for the lovely buffet dinner complimenting Mr. and Mrs. Hollingsworth. We
thoroughly enjoyed meeting Mr. and Mrs. Hollingsworth and found them delightful
company. We look forward to a return visit from them in the future.
By the way, our attendance was seventy four! We were overjoyed, but overwhelmed. We
found everyone pleased with the speaker and the arrangements. In the future, we would
appreciate your cooperation in sending your reservations earlier than the last week.
We understand ~here are exceptions, but those last minute reservations cause concern
about food and space. But, we do want a good turnout, so try to let us know as soon
as possible. Please!
We have started thinking about our fall plans and hope We can present programs both
interesting and helpful. For Some time, We have been aware of the need of our neW
members for doing research in the Library. We anticipate a tour of Cossitt-Goodwyn
Library to familiarize researchers with the files, indexes and books. We also want
to revive several useful ideas. We have had several request for assistance and advice
on evaluating the materials collected through reSearch. Several of our experienced
genealogists will make themselves available at future meetings to discuss, individually,
the steps one can next make with regard to solving a problem. Please have your charts
and data arranged so that a speedy evaluation can be made. We know this will prove
helpful.
In October, we will open our permanent headquarters at 2233 Madison Avenue. We voted
in April to rent space where our properties can be centralized. Now, we are fortunate
in having acquired a mid-town location that Seems to suit our every need. Our library
and bulletin office will be stationed there, and We will continue the present schedule
regarding time and dates for exchange of books. We have been grateful to Betty Moore
for the loan of her lovely den this summer for this same uSe and purpose.
In December, we do not have a scheduled meeting, but We are planning a festive
House" in our new quarters.
I~pen
At this time, it might be well to remind our out-of-town members that the 1969 Surname
Index has been printed and sells for $1.00. Also, that the fly-sheet listing contents
and prices of all the back issues of "Ansearchin'" News was sent out in the first
issue of 1970. The Editor, Jewel Standefer, welcomes all documented Tennessee materia];
Bible records; cemetery records. Material that is too lengthy Qr unsuitable for publication is placed in binders and kept in our private library for the use of our members.
We hope you had a pleasant and profitable "search in" summer.

Again, our Staff thanks one of our erudite, hard-working members for many of the
records contained in this issue. Mr. Jonathan Kennon Smith, Certified Genealogist,
has gone into both Benton and Fayette Counties, Tennessee to secure these data for
you. The value of original records cannot be overstated, and Mr. Smith has our
sincere appreciation for his efforts in your behalf.
In addition to the assistance Mr. Smith has given us, he has just completed A History
of Benton County, Tennessee to 1900, 153 pages, maps, illustrations and an abreviated
index. These Dooks are not for sale, but they are available in several southern state
libraries. Our hearty congratulations to him for having accomplished so serious a
work ..
Aside from our pleasure in receiving many new subscriptions to "Ansearchin "' News,
we have been most gratified by the letters received from our readers commending our

GENEALOGICAL LINEAGE OF PRISCILLA JONES MACON LEIPER (Macon, Fitzhugh, Ashton,
Washington Families), by Esther Agnes Leiper Shumaker. Harper Leiper
Studio, Houston, Texas, 1969. 73 pages. Illus. Order from Mrs.
Shumaker, 418 North Avalon, Memphis, Tennessee 38112. $14.50.
Upon first opening this genealogy, one can readily discern that it is imminently
a labor of love. The book represents untold hours of work, with its carefully and
thoughtfully arranged lineages (graced with numerous illustrations). Mrs. Shumaker
pays tribute to her mother's worthy ancestry, as well as she gives an account of
the lady's lineal descendants and her own ascendants. She furnishes the lineages
of many Virginia families, including the Ashtons, Ayletts, Battailes, Fitzhughs,
Gerards, Ironmongers, Macons, Martiaux, Popes, Reades, Smiths, Tabbs, Tuckers,
Warners, Washingtons and many others. The compiler has expended much effort in
giving the evidences for her lineages as well as the patriotic services (very
thorough) of her forebears and an engaging account of the Virginia Washingtons
and their Sulgrave Manor heritage. The compiler has incorporated within the main
corpus of the genealogy, the direct descents (through her mother) from Charlemagne,
the numerous Magna Carta Barons, Knights of the Garter, and other European notables,
including the medieval crusaders. Mrs. Shumaker expressed the sentiment regarding
her labors, that '~ll efforts in compilation were prompted by the religious hope
that the young might revere and build character in consideration and care, using
the past as a foundation for the future."

AN ETYMOLOGICAL DICTIONARY OF FAMILY AND CHRISTIAN NAMES, by William Arthur
(1857), 300 pages, hard cover, index. Re-published
(1969) by Gale Research Company, Book Tower, Detroit, Michigan 48226.
$9.50 •.
This volume contains a comprehensive study of family and Christian names, which
provides the semantic derivation of twenty seven hundred family names and five
hundred Christian names secured from the English, Saxon, Dutch, Danish, German,
Welch, Gaelic (Celtic), Cornish-English and other languages. The introduction is
a documented essay which includes a concise history of surnames; treats biblical
names and their significance; the early functions of names; sobriquets and nicknames; types of names (descriptive, local, official). Many cross-references are
given which aid the reader in tracking down the various forms and corruptions of
a particular name. The author gives credit to the sources of information in order
to corroborate and complement his own research.
GENEALOGY OF THE OODSON (DOTSON), LUCAS, PYLES, ROCHESTER AND ALLIED FAMILIES,
by S. Emmett Lucas, Jr., (1959), 241 pages. Order from Georgia Genealogical
Reprints, 405 Virginia Way, Vidalia, Georgia 30474. Paper cover $10.00
or hard cover $12.50.
Another fine book has arrived from the workshop of the Reverend Silas Emmett Lucas,
Jr., which can be epitomized by his statement, "It is my belief that, no matter how
distantly related we are to each other, we should try to keep in closer contact and
kindle the family relationship that we are a part of and so often neglect." The
genealogy of these four families was secured from the records of marriages, births,
deaths, correspondence, visits, tombstone inscriptions, Bible records and early
census records. If a descendant or researcher does not find the person for whom he
is looking in this book, it is possible that he may do so in the Supplement to The
~ory of the O?dson-Dotson Family of Southwest Virginia. Both books are of the

same superior workmanship which is characteristic of the author.
DADE COUNTY PIONEERS, 1840 & 1850 Census, by Paul R. L. Vance, (1970), 94 pages,
soft binder, index. Order from the author, Box 578, Marietta, Georgia
30060. $7.50.
Dade County, Georgia was formed from Walker County on Christmas Day, 1837. The
majority of the early settlers of the county came from East Tennessee after the
removal of the Cherokees to Oklahoma. Lookout Mountain on the east, Sand Mountain
on the west and the Tennessee River on the north made this an isolated community.
The 1840 census was taken less than three years after the formation of the county.
The author, to compensate for the inaccuracies inherent in census taking, has
checked subsequent census records, as well as early court records, for clarification.
Mr. Vance points with pride to his ancestors and those of his wife who were among
the early settlers of Dade County.
CHURCHYARD LITERATURE, by John Robert Kippax (1877), 213 pages, hard cover, index.
Re-issued (1)69) by Singing Tree Press, Book Tower, Detroit, Michigan
48226. $).50.
It is in this choice collection of American Epitaphs that an insight may be gained
into the thoughts and beliefs of early America. The necrological gleanings of the
author are carefully classified according to type of epitaph: admonitory, devotional
laudatory, ludicrous, satirical, etc. One chapter is used for the inscriptions on
the tombstones of such eminent personages as Washington, Jefferson, Harvard, Lincoln
and others. Obsequies of various nations, ancient and modern, are noted. (This
book is cited in Sonnenschein, The Best Books.)
WORK FAMILY HISTORY 1690-1969, compiled by Von Gail Hamilton (1070), 592 pages,
hard bound cover, index. Order from the compiler, P. O. Box 936,
Park City, Utah 84060. $20.00.
This volume covers twelve generations of WORKS in America. It would seem that no
compiler in a lifetime would be able to do the labor necessary to complete such a
work of art. Well organized, systematic in its presentation, this book should be a
tremendous genealogical asset to people interested in the Work and allied families.
This book may serve as an inspiration to all who have dreams of establishing their
own family histories.
HISTORY OF DETROIT AND WAYNE COUNTY AND EARLY MICHIGAN, by Silas Farmer (1890),
1028 pages, hard bound, index. The Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged,
has been republished (1969) by Gale Research Company, Book Tower,
Detroit, Michigan 48226. $17.50.
This is a superb work on local and general history with authentic details on the
founding and progress of early settlements, government officials, clergy and
pioneers. It covers the events of the Territory and State, of which Detroit has
been at different times the capital. The research is classified under twelve
different heads, arranged in eighty chapters. A Supplement includes: Annals of
Detroit; French Farms or Private Claims; City Charters; Amendments and Special
Laws. Interest is not restricted to Michigan; therefore, historians as well as
genealogists ~ill enjoy this book.
THE MELUNGEONS (THEIR ORIGIN AND KIN), by Bonnie Ball (1.'69), 71 pages, soft cover.
Order from author, p. O. Box 62, Haysi, Virginia 24256. $2.00.
The earliest colonial records tell us that there were people of mixed racial backgrounds to be found in the mountains of Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee,
North and South Carolina. The racial mixture apparently was Indian, Caucasian and
Negro. ''Me langer, the French word for mixed races became ''Me lungeon" in the

eastern mountains. The family names and language were English. These people were
recorded in the census as Free Colored but the Melungeons usually called themselves
Indians (of one derivation or another). The author explored the possible relationship of the Melungeons with the Lost Colony of Raleigh on Roanoke Island and other
theories of the origin of these people. Many fascinating traditions. narratives,
anecdotes. statistics. nicknames. interviews and first-hand stories about the
Melungeons are related. Some interesting conclusions have been made and a summary
is added to conclude the story.
THE MARCH OF THE SAGES. compiled by Mrs. Bonnie (Sage) Ball (1967), 575 pages, hard
back. index. Order from the author. p. O. Box 62, Haysi. Virginia 24256.
$15.00.
The purpose of the book is to serve as a family history of the descendants of James
Sage. a Revolutionary soldier from Grayson County. Virginia. The features are:
Allied families; other Sage lines; unidentified Sages; documentary records; Sage
records from England and many photographs. A very interesting story is told of the
capture of Caty Sage as a young girl and her life with the Indians. As with many
pioneer families, this one has migrated into almost every state of the union. The
book is well written.
AMERICAN AND BRITISH GENEALOGY AND HERALDRY, compiled by P. Wi~liam Filby, (1970),
184 pages, hard cover. index. Order from the Order Department, American
Library Association. 50 East Huron, Chicago, Illinois 60611. $10.00.
A selected list of books containing over eighteen hundred titles comprises this
bibliography. It will be a handy reference for genealogists, individual researchers
and librarians. Many annotations indicate helpful features or limitations of
specific books. Its coverage includes regional and ethnic groups of the United
States (except Alaska), Canada and Great Britain.

Williamson County, Tennessee form a nucleus for the publication. Seventy two or
more pioneer families have relatives buried in this area. Historical and genealogical
data which have been included are marriage, census and Bible records. The roll of
Company "B" of the Twentieth Tennessee Regiment was used as one of the sources for
gathering a wealth of statistics.

CHURCH SITE DESIGNATED "LANDMARK"
Contributed by Georgia Belle Crawford (Mrs. William L.)
The location of the oldest United Methodist congregation in Texas, MCMahan's Chapel,
near Bronson, was designated a denominational "landmark" by the United Methodist
General Conference in May, 1970. It was named in 1833 for Samuel Doak McMahan, a
Tennessean who had moved to Sabine County, Texas.
The congregation was organized in September 1833, by the Rev. James Porter Stevenson,
son of Rev. William Stevenson, who began his ministry in Middle Tennessee. He continued it in Southeast Missouri and was later founder of Methodism in Arkansas. He
was the first Protestant preacher in Texas and one of the first in what is now
Oklahoma. The son, James, preached in East Texas while he was pastor across the
state line in Louisiana.
Since it was against Mexican law to organize a Protestant church in Texas,
Stevenson organized a Methodist "society." There have been three buildings on the
site, and the church has continued its identity and work across the years.
This church is now officially established as a "landmark" and an unofficial shrine.

NOTE: There are many other markers in Belmont Cemetery, but we have selected for
publication only those born before 1870 unless a relationship is shown. (Editor.)
In Cole's Antique Shop at Val Verde, Texas; between Alamo and Donna, Texas, I found
a tombstone~ Mr. Cole received the tombstone unknowingly in a truckload of merchandise and being a most honorable man does not feel quite right about having someone's
tombstone~ The stone is in excellent shape and is broken off neatly at the base.
It
reads: "In Memory of Frances E. Medearis, wife of John T. Medearis and daughter of
Henry and Frances Dean. Born Mar. 28, 1833 in Bedford City, Tenn., Died Oct. 31,
1859 in Sevier City, Arkansas while moving to Texas. Age 26 yrs., 7 mos. and 3 days."
