ASB President Dakota McElmurry
with Vice President Riza Liu
Mikayla Carter
Staff Writer
Dakota McElmurry and Riza Liu are the
president and vice president of our school.
We know who they are, but we don’t know
them; we don’t know their personalities,
what they plan to do in the future, for our
school’s future, or how they even got to be
president and vice president. They can’t
come to each one of us individually, and
tell us about themselves, so here I am,
writing about it so all of us can get to know
our school leaders.
The first thing to do if you want
to become a school leader, is to join
leadership. You can’t begin any sort of
presidential campaign unless you have
been in leadership for at least your junior
year, then by the end of that year you start
to set up a campaign. The mustache was
Dakota’s way of gathering attention from
students. He made posters and bookmarks
with mustaches on them all, which drew our
attention and interest. Riza also made posters
and signs, but her technique for winning the
school was about relating to the different
cliques at school, going to all varieties
of people and sharing her reasons for
running, and why she would be a good
vice president. With these movements,
they were able to win the election
and become the president and vice
president of the school.
Their plans for the school entail
keeping RHS clean, hosting a lot of
fundraising events, getting leadership
more involved in the community,
and overall just having a very
fun and successful year.
Riza Liu says the best part
of holding a position of
leadership at RHS is “being
a role model” and the best
advice she can give for future vice presidents
is “to just keep an open mind and listen to
the voices around you.” As a person, Riza
is intelligent, jittery, and kind-hearted. She’s
involved in leadership, Link Crew, Key Club,
National Honor Society, and she helped
coach the male cheerleaders for powderpuff all-the-while maintaining
an amazing GPA of 3.7. We
are truly lucky to have a vice
president like her.
Dakota McElmurry first
decided to run for president
because, as he says,
“I like being a part of
putting things together
for the school.” Not
only does he
help run our
school
but
he’s also a
lifeguard at
the YMCA, a
member of Key
Club, National Honor Society, and
to top it off, he is an active actor. He’s involved
in the plays held at the school, and plans to go
further with this passion in college, and maybe
the death. Frazier knocked down Ali for only
the third time in Ali’s career. He did it with
that bodacious left hook after pounding away
at him for 11 rounds. He gave, arguably, the
best athletic performance to ever be displayed
at Madison Square Garden; as much skill as
Smokin’ Joe lost twice versus Ali later in
his career. One of them being the “Thrilla
at Manilla”. This fight was more than just a
fight, it was a battle to the death. Neither of
them was going to back down, they would die
before they gave up. Frazier was pummeled
round after round after round, but he would
not give up. His eyes swollen shut and his
mouth full of blood. He stayed in. In the
fourteenth round his trainer wouldn’t let him
go back in. Ali won. Ali said a few years later
that Joe Frazier was the toughest opponent he
has ever fought.
Joe Frazier wasn’t the best fighter of alltime, but he had the most fight. He was small for
a heavyweight but his determination and heart
outweighed the scales. He should be forever
known as one of the greatest heavyweights of
all time and the greatest warrior of boxing.
@SHAQ: Another legend lost R I P to the
great Joe Frazier, peace brother you will be
missed
@MikeTyson:Today is a sad yet remarkable
day as we mourn the death of boxing legend
Joe Frazier & honor him by celebrating his
amazing accomplishments. Frazier and Ali
were quintessential the apex of pedigree
fighting in which each man would not give an
inch until they were dead. My family and I are
sending our sincerest condolences to the Joe
Frazier family.
even hold it as a career. When Dakota sets
his mind to something he goes and gets
it. He has wanted to become ASB
president since the sixth grade,
and as a senior in high school
he is following through with his
dreams. As our president he says
he just “does what needs to be
done.” Dakota McElmurry is a
“go-getter.”
Hopefully through this
article you were able to
learn abit about them and
what they are doing for
us. There are a variety of
people in the world, and in
a black and white sense they
can be described as thinkers
or doers. Our ASB leaders are
doers, doing whatever they
can to keep this school going
positively. Thank you Dakota and Riza,
thank you for all that you do for us.

Joe Frazier dies at age 76 Gold prices

Joe Frazier recently died on November
8th from liver cancer at the age of 76.
“Smokin’ Joe” had been in the dark shadow
of Muhammad Ali through his career. He’s
best known in this day and age as Ali’s
rival, but he was more than that.
The Philly grown man, Joseph William
Frazier, grew up boxing. He had a
devastating left hook that was absolutely
brutal. He won a gold medal for the U.S.A
in the Tokyo Olympics. Soon after his gold
medal win, he became a pro boxer. Smokin’
Joe took over the heavyweight title while
Ali wasn’t allowed to box, setting up the
fight of the century, undefeated heavyweight
versus undefeated heavyweight. Right
versus left. Anti-war versus pro-war. Their
styles contradicted so much, yet, somehow,
they combined so well in the ring.
On March 8, 1971. Madison Square
Garden hosted “The Fight”. In one corner
we had “The Greatest” Muhammad Ali, his
fighting was smooth and elegant and he had
bricks as hands. In the other corner we had
Joe Frazier, the scrappy, small heavyweight
who owns the most feared punch and his
style causes him to take punch after punch
as he gets in close. Frazier and Ali battled to
Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier
Michael Jordan’s 55 point performance as
much drama as Reggie Miller’s single handed
comeback for Indiana. Frazier had to spend
the month after “The Fight” in a hospital
where he almost died from kidney failure and
severe dehydration, but that’s just the kind of
fighter he was.

Since the beginning of this year, gold
and silver prices have been increasing
dramatically. Many traders and businesses
have grown excited as gold and silver
keep on breaking new records. At the
same time, many countries are worried
about the world economy. The last time
gold saw such a steep increase was in the
1980s due to inflation.
The main reason for the price increase
this year is because of the United
States dollar’s depreciation. Currently,
the U.S. dollar is the world currency.
Many countries trade and buy goods in
U.S. dollars, and as the dollar’s value
decreases, gold’s value increases. This
causes more and more countries to want
to get rid of U.S. dollars and buy gold
and silver. Soon, the U.S. dollar may no
longer be the world’s leading currency,
and another currency like the Euro or the
Yuan will try to take over.
To sum up how the dollar started its
recent devaluation, our government and
the Federal Reserve have recently printed
vast quantities of U.S. dollars. Some
experts think that they have been printing

Apple CEO falls off the tree of life
Matthew Knight
Staff Writer
Every culture has an icon. For the
60’s counterculture, it was Bob Marley;
for the alternative rock movement in the
90’s, Kurt Cobain; and for the artists and
geeks of the modern age, it has always
been Steve Jobs.
You may not have heard of him before
this week, but Steve is the reason you can
have a Mac on your desk and an iPod in
your pocket. He built the first personal
computer in his garage. He founded Apple
on the principle that computers could be
better, and until the day he died, he was
working toward that goal.
Since long before our generation
was born, Steve knew and was working
toward what we wanted. In the days when
computers filled rooms and calculated
equations, he alone saw their potential
as smaller, personal devices. When they
were small enough to sit on desks, he
made them light enough to carry in a bag,
then small enough to slip in a pocket.
He popularized the keyboard, invented
the mouse, and finally moved to the
touchscreen, working tirelessly to make
computers accessible.
Can you imagine a world
without the technology we have
Photo provided by trendyhightech.com
Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, died October 5th 2011
today? It’s crazy to think that just five years
ago, there was no such thing as an iPhone.
The smartphone market was restricted to
BlackBerries and PalmPilots, boring devices
used by businessmen for email and stock
quotes. But Steve Jobs saw the potential there
when nobody else could. He designed a phone
that you could tap, touch, flick; a phone on
which you could browse the web, play games,
listen to music. He made the phone just as
personal in 2007 as he made the computer
personal in 1981.
Even if you don’t use Apple products,
even if you don’t approve of Apple’s business
practices, their design ethic and commitment
made the rest of the modern computing
market possible. Like it or not, that laptop
with Windows 7 or that phone with Android
grew out of Apple’s success. And Apple’s
success grew out of Steve Jobs’ vision for
the future.
Steve Jobs died on October 5, and I
mourn his passing. People who weren’t as
close to technology game as me might not
understand my sadness. “You never even
met him,” people have protested. “Sure,
it’s sad, but why does it matter? Why
should we care?”
It matters because Steve Jobs inspired
us to be creative. I wrote my first novel
on a Macintosh; I learned the ropes of
photography on my iPhone. By making
his computers so accessible, Steve made
the world accessible to all of us. That, I
think, was always his goal - to help us
realize that anything is possible. For all
the good the technology industry does us
every day, perhaps its greatest triumph
is showing the limitless potential of men
and women with a dream.
Hippies cried in the streets when
Bob Marley died. Teenagers in the 90s
laid down and wept at the news of Kurt
Cobain’s suicide. And people like us - the
young, the creative, the inspired - we’ll
mourn the passing of Steve Jobs the way
he would have wanted. We will keep
creating on the devices he created; we
will carry on his legacy as best we can;
we will never stop trying to achieve our
dreams.
Gold prices continued from pg. 1 Sad times in Happy Valley
year. This makes all of our previous
dollars worth less than before. Our dollar
would have already fallen drastically, but
so far it has not since it is still the world
currency and is still used for most oil
trading.
All this time we are also heavily indebted
to China----- more than a trillion dollars---- and China does not want those dollars to
quickly depreciate. Many countries have
a declining economy, partly because they
use the U.S. dollar. While we import more
goods from many different countries than
we export to them, the dollars sent to them
cause inflation there.
Why have gold and silver been monetary
standards for over 5000 years? Partly it
is because of their scarcity, which puts a
strict restraint on any country from quickly
increasing its money supply when the
money must be backed by precious metals.
Unscrupulous kings, emperors, dictators,
and politicians throughout history have
hated that restraint when they want more
money for wars or social programs. They
would like to be able to simply print more
paper money and require their subjects to
accept, under penalty by law, that paper as
having value.
Gold and silver are both valued
for their beauty, and have been used
worldwide in art and jewelry since
antiquity.
Finally, both gold and silver are easy
to recognize and identify. Gold is Mother
Nature’s most stable element. Gold coins
that went down with Spanish galleons
and recovered after 500 years in sea water
are still in mint condition. Coins made
of gold or silver have intrinsic value and
are accepted as money anywhere in the
world. Paper money that is not linked to
gold or silver (not convertible on demand)
is called fiat money, and historically has
always eventually become worthless.
It is now up to our government to
wise up and stop printing fiat paper
dollars. The rising gold prices show us
how much the dollar is losing value.
Without stable money, our economy will
never perform even close to its maximum
potential.

Reading revolution: Kindle vs. Books
Ashley Netz

Over the years, technology has come a
long way. The first computer weighed 700
pounds, was composed of three-hundred
vacuum tubes, and over five thousand feet
of wire. However, today we have iPads
weighing approximately 1.5 pounds.
While some of this technology has deeply
benefitted our society, we can’t help but
wonder if it is always the best solution.
When Amazon released their Kindle in
2007 it quickly became the popular way
to download, transport, read, and listen
to books, magazines, and other published
works. Yet since the release of these ebooks
many bookstores have been suffering from
the loss of sales, and a large controversy has
arisen over the issue.
Many people say that the Kindles are the
next big thing. Producers especially see a
large potential for students. Who wants to
carry around a backpack full of textbooks
when they could carry around one Kindle?
They are light-weight, compact, and great
for traveling. The Kindle could change the
way children are educated, and some say
improve their ability to learn. The Kindle
also presents a greener, faster, and less
expensive way to read books. Instead of
going from one bookstore to another to
buy the somewhat expensive book, you
can download it for a reasonable price in
a matter of seconds. They are said to pay for

Martin Luther King memorial
Miranda White
Staff Writer
In the summer of 2011, controversy
arose as a memorial for Martin Luther
King Jr. was being unveiled. The memorial
in Washington D.C. is a sculpture of King
coming out of a mountain of stone, based
on the quote: “Out of the mountain of
despair, a stone of hope.” The controversy
came to be when a quote from a sermon
given by King was paraphrased. The
quote, originally supposed to be on
the south face of the memorial, was
summarized to say, “I was a drum major
for justice, peace, and righteousness.”
Maya Angelou, a consultant for the
memorial, told The Washington Post:
“The quote makes Dr. Martin Luther
King look like an arrogant twit. He
was anything but that. He was far too
profound a man for that four letter word
to apply.” Dr. King originally said:
“Yes, if you want to say that I was
a drum major, say that I was a drum
major for justice. Say that I was a drum
major for peace. I was a drum major
for righteousness. And all of the other
shallow things will not matter. I won’t
have any money to leave behind. I
won’t have the fine and luxurious things of
life to leave behind. But just want to leave a
committed life behind. (Amen) And that’s all
I want to say.”
Ed Jackson Jr., the executive architect,
Photo provided by Fox News
decided he wanted to change the placement of
the quotes, so the “drum major” quote was on
the north face. He wanted people to first see
the “Out of the mountain of despair” quote,
since it was the inspiration for the memorial.
Lei Yixin, the sculptor, said the north face was
prepared for a shorter quote and therefore he
did not have enough room to fit the whole
“drum major” quote onto the north face, so
they decided to paraphrase. When faced with
the decision on how to paraphrase it, the
committee said “...the least we could do was
define who he was based on his perception of
himself: ‘I was a drum major for this, this and
this.’”
Jackson does not think the paraphrased
quote makes Dr. King look arrogant, although
many think the inscription makes him seem
egotistical. He argues that when he told the
U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (which was
overseeing the memorial design), they didn’t
have a problem with it.
Maya Angelou also said the way it was
paraphrased “minimizes the man. It makes
him seem less than the humanitarian he was...
It makes him seem an egotist. He would never
have said that of himself. He said ‘you’ might
say it.”
Jackson doesn’t seem to be too bothered
by the comments people are making of the
memorial paraphrasing and says he thinks,
“It’s rather small of folks to pick at things.
This gas been going on for fourteen years, and
all of them have had plenty of time to add their
thoughts and ideas.”
No plans have been made to change the
quotes on the memorial.

Overused
words
Angelica Dawson
Staff Writer
When you walk around today,
anywhere in the United States, the
lingo, accents, or even the language
may be different, but there are a few
overused words and phrases that you
will, without a doubt, hear.
For example, the word “like” is used
to compare things or relate one thing to
another. It is often just a word that fills a
pause in your speech.
The word “um” didn’t actually used
to be a word. It was just a sound used
to show uncertainty. But now “um” is
a word in the dictionary, the definition
in the Webster Online Dictionary being
“used to indicate hesitation.”
“So” is a word that could also be
considered overused. It is commonly
being added to essays to begin a
sentence, or to start a conversation. For
example: “So, how about that Steelers
game?”
“Obviously” is another one of those
overused words. “Are you going to the
game tonight?” “Obviously!” When in
actuality, it wasn’t obvious. That’s why
the person was asking.
To add to these overused words, how
about some overused phrases? “My bad”
is one that, grammatically speaking, is
not even correct. It may sound right, but
that’s only because you’ve heard it so
many times throughout your life. You
are taking claim to bad; in other words,
you have a bad. That doesn’t make
much sense.
Another phrase we’ve all said is,
“Google it.” It sometimes just pops out
when you don’t know an answer, so you
decide to “Google it.” Though Google
is helpful, maybe we reference it too
much.
Even in our texts, we overuse and
abbreviate phrases. “Omg,” “Tmi,” and
“Lol” are only a few, and I know you
can think of at least three more. Think
about this: if you translate those to what
they stand for, you’d never say it, would
you?
Now, we’ve all been guilty at one
time or another of using at least one, if
not all, of these commonly used words
and phrases. Being aware of the usage
of these words may help you stop and
think next time you talk to someone or
text your best friend. Then again, maybe
you’ll just read this, laugh, and text your
friend: “Omg, so guess what I just read.
It is like hilarious!”

Nike Releases ‘Back to the Future’ Shoes
for ten days.
It was the year 1989. A new movie had
just come out about what life will be like in
2015, and it featured some really cool Nike
shoes. Twenty-two years later in September
of 2011, Nike released shoes very to similar
to those featured in Back to the Future Part
II as a part of a fundraiser for Parkinson’s
disease. There were 1,500 pairs of the shoes
made, called Nike Air MAG, and were sold
on eBay for ten days at a starting price of 99
cents. Some shoes were sold for over 5,000
dollars and all proceeds were donated to the
Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Although the price of the shoes were
originally set to less than a dollar, it was
pushed above 2,000 dollars (per pair) in over
20 minutes at the online auction. They sold 150
pairs per night for the ten days they were for
sale. They were available in men’s sizes 7-13
and the auctions were only open for residents
of the United States.
The shoes were designed as closely to the
original as possible, with lights in the heel of
the shoe, a glowing LED “Nike” logo, and
“space-age materials.” The shoes also feature an

internal battery is good for 3,000 hours.
Although the shoes were designed for regular,
everyday use, they are not recommended
for playing sports and, unfortunately, do not
feature the futuristic self-tying laces like the
ones in the movie.
The fact that Nike was able to create these
shoes without having the lights powered
by a battery pack with wires running down
the wearer’s leg (like in the movie) is a
great innovation. The shoes are powered
by one battery that can keep all the lights
illuminated for five hours.
Michael J. Fox, the man who played
Marty McFly in all three installments of
Back to the Future, developed young-onset
Parkinson’s disease in 1991. Two years later
he created the Michael J. Fox Foundation
for Parkinson’s Research, raising money to
search for the cure. Parkinson’s is a disease
that affects the central nervous system,
creating problems with one’s movement
abilities. Most people develop Parkinson’s
with no specific cause, but a small amount
of people get it genetically. His foundation
is where all the money raised for these
shoes will be donated, as well as 50 million
dollars matched to the funds earned (from
Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, and
his wife, Anne Wojcicki, co-founder of a
personal genetics company) between now
and December 31, 2012.
Nike Inc., which is based in Beaverton,
Oregon, created the shoe more than four
years ago but were unsure when it would
be ready. When they finally released the
shoes, they were obviously successful and
raised a good deal of money for Parkinson’s
Research. Although the official auctions
have closed, there are still some of these
“rad” shoes left on eBay. But don’t get
too excited, unless you have almost 6,000
dollars burning a hole in your pocket, you
won’t be getting your hands on these shoes,
until maybe 2015.

On the border of controversy
1,800 miles of the United States borders
Mexico. 95 percent of illegal immigrants
come from Mexico. Everyday more
Mexican citizens cross that border illegally
and affect every single person in the United
States. Not only do they take hard working
American’s jobs they cheat other people
around the world who are trying to come
to the United States legally. This is wrong
and needs to be stopped.
In Arizona the state legislature passed a
law that allowed law enforcement within
Arizona to ask any person suspected of a
crime for their I. D. or green card and instead
of the federal government supporting
this law, they are now suing the state of
Arizona for unconstitutional acts against
people of the United States. Statistics show
that since illegal immigration from Mexico
has risen, so have crime rates in every state
in the nation except Hawaii, Alaska, and
Maine. Crime rates in Texas, California
and Arizona have almost tripled in the last
15 years. Now with crime rates that were
only topped during prohibition (and the
only state it went up that much in was New
York), how can the Federal Government
say that it is protecting us when clearly the
only thing the state of Arizona is doing is
trying to protect it self.
Then there is the issue of how an illegal
immigrant
affects
taxpayers in Oregon.
Many illegal aliens
come to Oregon so that
they can get the free
Oregon Health Plan
that is taxpayer funded.
The Oregonian ran an
article that stated that
80 percent of illegal
immigrants in Oregon
are on the Oregon
Health
Plan.
Not
only do these illegal
immigrants come to a
country where 9% of
it’s citizens do not have
a job and take the jobs
that those 9% should
have, they take citizens tax money when
they get the free health care that the state
of Oregon supplies. This is what I say. The
federal government needs to pass a law where
businesses are required to do a thorough
background check on a person to make sure
they are in the United States legally.
However, the federal government will
not do this because it
would lose the president,
the Hispanic vote, which
Obama can not afford
right now. The governor
of California openly defies
the Federal Government
by not reporting the
monthly illegal alien quota
and giving the F.B.I and
I.C.E. (Immigration and
Customs Enforcement) the
fingerprints of the illegals
that they capture and then
sometimes release in to the
general population. The
governor of Massachusetts
does the exact same thing.
He does not have strict
guidelines for enforcing and stopping illegal
immigration in his state. A man was recently
killed by a stray bullet fired from and illegal
immigrant’s handgun. The man had been
detained three weeks prior and had shown
the arresting officer a fake I.D. and the
officer never noticed. That mans life and
countless others could have been saved
if there were strict guidelines in place to
deal with criminals who may or may not
be illegally living in this country.
The government is unwilling to help
states on the border with the problems
that they deal with on a daily basis
when it comes to illegal immigrants and
the problems they cause the residents
of that state. Many officials within the
government just want to keep their
ratings up in the Hispanic community so
they can stay in office. Illegal immigrants
are an anchor around hard working
American’s necks. Especially in states
that have a free health care system that
less fortunate families qualify for. Only
the federal government can fix the
problem of illegal immigration and when
we get a government that is not afraid to
defy the Hispanic community and lose
the majority of that minorities vote then
the problem will get fixed and the United
States will improve drastically.
Did you know that the United States is
one of the only countries in the world that
still executes criminals? It’s true; the death
penalty was outlawed in Europe and most
of Latin America years ago. We Americans
stand with Iran, Cuba, and communist
China (among a handful of other nations)
on this issue. Our government thinks
it’s not only acceptable to kill criminals;
according to one attorney from Indiana,
it’s “the duty [of the state] to act in selfdefense to protect the innocent.”
That sounds great on paper, but we must
always remember the words on which our
nation was founded. The Declaration of
Independence states plainly “that all men
are created equal; that they are endowed
by their Creator with certain inalienable
rights; that among these are Life, Liberty,
and the pursuit of Happiness.” These rights
are inalienable; they cannot be taken away,
even be the United States government.
Remember the Stanley Williams case
in 2005? In the 1970s, Stanley founded
the Crips, a “deadly and powerful Los
Angeles-based street gang responsible for
hundreds of murders.” More recently, he
converted to Christianity and became an
anti-gang activist, writing several books
and travelling around the country promoting
peace. He became known for fighting gangs
rather than starting them, and received Nobel
Prizes
for
Peace
and
Literature.
The state of
California
didn’t
care
about any of
that, though;
they arrested
him for those
Crips murders
twenty years
ago and killed
him by lethal
injection.
Is that all
we can expect
from
our
government?
Not only will
they
refuse
to
pay
to
rehabilitate a criminal, but they will senselessly
murder a criminal who rehabilitated himself?
Imagine if the criminal on trial were your
mom or dad, your sister or brother. Would
you let the court murder them ‘to protect the
innocent’? No - you would do everything you
could to save them, even if it cost thousands of
dollars, even
if it meant
years
in
prison and
therapy.
Statesponsored
executions
show
that
our nation
has lost all
regard for
human life.
We have no
respect for
our fellow
man. Many
l i b e r a l
newspapers,
including
USA Today,
claim that
“to execute or not [is] a question of cost.”
Admittedly, times are tough, but have we
really reached the point that we’re willing to
kill a US citizen to save a few dollars?
The origins of the death penalty lie
in the earliest pages of recorded history.
Medieval medicine didn’t have the same
benefits that we have today; we can treat a
broken arm or a diseased leg, but doctors
in ancient Rome or Greece could only
cut it off. In the same way, medieval law
didn’t have our modern resources for
rehabilitation and treatment; their only
solution for crime was execution.
Wake up. It’s 2011 now, and
amputation isn’t the only option anymore.
Sure, criminal rehabilitation can be
expensive - a single life sentence can cost
the state up to $740,000 - but if we take
into account all the additional costs of
the death penalty, including pre-trial and
investigation expenses, execution costs
the state nearly 40% more. That’s $1.26
million per murder.
Like the founding fathers, I believe
in the sanctity of human life. The job of
our government is to uphold our national
values, and as long as the United States
continues executing criminals, they are
not doing so. We must do everything in
our power to criminalize the death penalty.
It’s unconstitutional; it’s immoral; it’s
expensive; it’s just wrong.

Bullying takes its toll Teen marriage...I do not
Naomi Svendsen
It used to be that when one kid
pushed another kid around they would
be considered “messing around” or
“horseplay”. In this day and age, it’s not
just playing around or one kid messing
with the other. In some states, there are
very server consequences for bulling
depending on the severity of the case.
Kids have been pushed to the extreme of
suicide, social illnesses, self-confidence
issues, depression and suicidal thoughts.
As teenagers, we really don’t understand
the seriousness of these issues. We just
think, “they will learn to adapt to it” or
“they need to understand that people are
going to harass them throughout their
life, so why not start now?” No one
should ever have to adapt to physical or
even mental abuse.
Bulling has proven to change lifestyles
of people. It can shape the person being
bullied into a worse person than they already
are. I, for one, cannot stand seeing people
abused like they are in some situations.
Personally, I have been on the other side of
the receiving line and it is not a good thing
to go through under any circumstances.
With all of the technology available today,
there are so many different types and
ways of bullying; cyber-bullying, physical
bulling, hazing, and mental bullying, etc.
Being on the antagonist’s side doesn’t
make you any better of a person than the
actual antagonist. Why not just stand up
for the person being hurt? Why do we, as
humans, have to undermine others to make
ourselves feel better about our life? When
you really think about it, you could be the
cause of someone else losing his or her
life.
Today, when caught, police and other
legal authorities could be involved, leading
to restraining orders, one person suing the
other and so on. So ask yourself this, “Am
I willing to hurt someone else and affect
someone else’s life in a negative way, just
for a few seconds of making myself feel
like they are lower than me? Am I ready to
face the consequences of their life loss?”
The nest time you encounter someone
being bullied, step in and tell them to step
off. Otherwise, you are just as guilty of
bullying in the same degree.
As a child, I would play house with my
friends and neighbors, as many children
do. We would set up a tent or a table in the
back yard underneath a tree, and act as any
normal family would. At the end of every
day, however, we would all return to our real
homes and families. This year,
though, nearly four percent of
teenagers in America will find
themselves going home to
their own husbands or wives.
There are many reasons or
factors that contribute to
teenage marriage, including
pregnancy, religion, and
social pressure. Many times,
getting married at a young age
is an escape from a broken or
unfulfilling home life.
Alarming amounts of
teenagers today are finding
themselves with not only
spouses, but children as well.
Nearly nine hundred thousand teenage girls
become pregnant annually in the United States.
While only a small fraction of these will marry
the father of their child, it is the leading cause
of teenage marriage.
Until the start of the twenty first century,
many religions encouraged marriage at a
young age, and a few still do. It used to be
common to marry young in order to ensure
a secure family and the continuation of a
family’s lineage. Now, teenage marriage is a
widely unaccepted and unsuccessful venture,
which many popular religions disapprove
of.
My parents were married as teenagers,
and their marriage lasted only three years.
In three short years, they decided to make
a lifelong commitment. They had me, and
as they grew up, they grew
apart. This happens so
frequently when young
couples decide to get
married. While they both
value the experience of
marriage and parenthood,
they wish that they had
waited until they were
mature enough to make
such profound decisions.
The most important
thing for teens to remember
is that years twelve to
twenty of our lives are
the most fluctuating. Our
emotions are inarguably
sporadic and easily redirected. It seems
silly to commit to something as life altering
and long term as marriage at our age. While
customs that are more traditional indicate
that in situations such as pregnancy,
marriage must be the solution, this is not
always the best choice for couples. It is
important for individuals to evaluate their
unique situations before committing so
fully to each other, especially since in
the United States, fifty percent of teenage
marriages end in divorce within ten years.

College prep? maybe not...
Jessica Roady
What is 67 factorial? What is a gerund?
Who was Scipio Africanus? Many high
school students will know the answers
to these questions. Their parents, on the
other hand, will have absolutely no idea
what you’re talking about. Questions
like these show up on many tests that
high school teachers will give students,
claiming to be preparing them for college
and life outside of school. But do these
arbitrary facts actually turn up in real-life
situations?
High school students have an average of
about 1.6 tests per week. That means that
more often than not, students aged 14-18 will
have more than one test a week. This may not
seem like a very big number at first, but when
week after week brings test after test, the stress
makes it almost impossible for many kids to
study very well. Does this sound like a good
system to you? Of course not. Many college
professors complain that freshman-year
students come to them entirely unprepared
for college-level research and writing. This
comes back to high school teachers trying to
fly through the massive amounts of academic
content their state requires them to cover in
one school year and giving frequent tests and
quizzes on the material.
Think about how standardized essays are
graded. Teachers from around the state are
required to sit in a huge room for hours on
end to read essays, all based on the same 34 prompts given. They are given less than a
minute to read each essay, and if the first few
sentences don’t catch their eye, low scores
are almost guaranteed. Most scorers agree
that they let scores given to other essays affect
what they give to the essay in front of them.
For example, if one teacher feels that she has
given too many 5’s in the past 10 minutes, she
will start expecting more out of the next 50
essays and will begin to give 4’s and 3’s to
essays that would normally get 5’s. And of
course, these scores will come back to a student
and affect their placement chances in colleges.
Is this fair in any way? Absolutely not. The
need to memorize vast amounts of material
and be tested on it all at once at the end of
every semester is familiar to all high school
students. But studies show that this method of
teaching is ineffective and useless in the long
run. It’s much better to thoroughly go over
each chapter in the curriculum with students
and make sure they know and understand the
material before giving a test. Children who
can research and write about the information
they have read about always perform better in
all subjects. Rote memorization can only work
if a student has particular interest in a subject
and wants to learn more about that certain
topic. Teachers often confuse disinterest with
a bad attitude and therefore an assured
failure in life, when really it’s their
curriculum and teaching style that’s to
blame. Nobody can just change what
they’re attracted to with a snap of a
finger, and students are no different.
To fix all of these problems in our
country’s public school curriculum
would take a drastic change in education
processes and, most likely, tons of money
and time. But even teachers in their
classrooms can make a difference within
their state’s prerequisites, just by giving
less tests and spending a little more time
each week to make sure their students
understand the material thoroughly. The
Obama Administration and everybody
in an authoritative position regarding
our country’s education system would
have to trust those closest to our
students to know what would really
be the best for them and give them the
freedom necessary to adjust curriculums
to maximize the effect placed on our
country’s future leaders – not to put
more weight onto their shoulders.

Radio music
Paige Cardenas
Did you know that when you turn on
the radio, the music you hear if often not
portrayed as the artist intended it to be?
Lines and words are changed, and with
them, underlying tones of the songs become
meaningless. Subtracting or editing only
one line can ruin the whole illusion. Why
do this, when people could just as easily
turn their radio off, or change the station? It
is a proven fact that music affects people’s
moods. If it is edited, its influence is greatly
depleted.
Firstly, it takes a lot of time and money
to go through and
remake or butcher
entire songs for the
sake of those who
would rather not
listen. In comparison,
think of how easy
it is to simply turn
down the volume on
your radio. If you are
all that offended by
what you hear, feel
free to change it or stop it from playing in
your own space. If you do not like what a
particular station has to say, don’t listen
to it. Above all, though, remember that
while it may bother you as an individual,
the vast majority of people enjoy hearing
Orange R
The Orange R is published every five
weeks by the newspaper staff of Roseburg
High School. It serves as a forum for individual expression as well as a learning
tool for students. It serves also to inform
students on current events both of school
and national importance. The opinions
presented do not in any way reflct those of
the high school itself. The advertisment
of products or services in the Orange R
does not imply endorsement by either

things played the way they were meant to be
played.
Another factor to consider is that of the
time of the songs themselves. Songs played
on the radio are typically between three and
four minutes long. If they are going to cut out
half of the song, they might as well not play it
at all. I understand that a lot of radio stations
tend to play songs with a fair amount of
“inappropriate” material in them. Therefore,
if they are going to insist on editing, I agree
that at the very least they should choose less
explicit songs to begin with.
The last and most important thing to realize
is that music affects the way people feel. Take
for example the song “The Bucket” by Kings
of Leon. The song was written by the lead
by the lead singer as a vote of confidence for
his younger brother. At the beginning of the
song, the word “legs” is edited out of the line
“you kick the bucket, and I’ll swing my legs,”
because the line references suicide. In my
opinion, this revision seems a little overkill.
I believe that it is wrong for people to go
through songs, pick and choose lines, and edit
them to their liking. When an artist is brave
enough to write a song straight from their
heart and then send it across the country on a
frequency for all to hear,
the least people could do
is let that song play out
the way it was meant to
be played. Even if some
people can’t stand the
truth it conveys, they
should not meddle with
it to change it. In short,
songs on the radio
should not be edited, in
order to preserve their
meaning. After all, how does one determine
what is truly appropriate to be broadcasted
over the radio? These days, the idea of an
honest radio station is becoming laughable. If
we cannot even honor honesty, what is left for
us to honor?

Year-round schooling
Many of us go to school excited to reach
summer. Nine months in school, and three
months out for the summer break. But what if
that was changed all together? What if it was
changed so that we would go to school all year
round? Would we lose our traditional summer
fun? Would the academic increase be worth
it? Once you consider the outcome, I believe
that one of the two schooling styles becomes
obviously better.
Year-round schooling may be an option
worth further exploration. Though it may
seem like it is too much to handle, we would
receive the same amount of education as we
would throughout the regular school year.
Schools run 180 days out of the year, which is
the number of days the year-round school year
would operate on. The difference is that rather
than going every week for 9 months, students
would attend 45 days with
15 off. Or, in other systems,
students could go to school
60 days with 20 off, or 90
days with 30 off. Holiday
breaks such as Christmas,
Thanksgiving, and Memorial
Day would still apply.
What about all of those
fun summer activities?
Camps, jobs, and the usual
fun, summery things would
be lost. However, this could
open up different types of
activities that band, choir,
and other youth interests
could take advantage of and
hold more than once a year.
Student jobs could take place after school and
during breaks. Time with friends and family
would be the same, and students would be able
to spend more time on other seasonal activities
such as skiing or snowboarding.
Academically, the decision of year-round
schooling may be very beneficial to our
society as a whole. Research has shown that
over the summer, students forget information
Chelsea Peterson
that they may otherwise be able to keep
a hold of if the breaks between schooling
days were shorter. If students could be
taught at a steadier pace, they may be
able to understand more
thoroughly what the
lessons are teaching;
not to mention students
often run out of things
to do in the summer.
This leads to wasted
time that could be spent
on their education. Also,
having less unscheduled
time may profit students
as far as being more
organized as people
overall.
In the end, the real
question is whether
or not we should
be worrying about
bettering the development of our society
or bettering the social lives of our
students. When I look at year-round
schooling more closely, I believe that
even though we may be losing a few of
our customary summer activities, we may
be gaining huge benefits when it comes
to schooling and making our society the
best that it can be.

NBA lockout continues RHS fall volleyball
Tommy Lavin
Staff Writer
After having the
highest television ratings
in a decade the National
Basketball Association
has locked out the players.
This has arisen from the
fact that the NBA pays
its players too much
money for small market
teams like Cleveland or
Minnesota to compete.
This is where the players
have the advantage. Big
market teams like Miami
and New York really do
not want this lockout
but since Commissioner
David Stern supports it
the owners will go along
with it. Players know
there is a split between
the owners and many have put pressure on
them by showing that they do not need the
NBA and playing in other countries. Kobe
Bryant, one of the most known basketball
players in the world, is playing in Italy for
a huge per game salary. The big question
however is who does this hurt and who
does it help.
It obviously hurts the NBA, which may
have a hard time recovering its ratings that
hit a record high for the twenty first century
the season before. It also hurts fans of the
NBA who are hardcore fans when it comes to
their favorite teams. This leaves the question
of who benefits from the lockout. Other
sports are the big winners,
especially the NHL. The NHL
experienced extremely high
ratings last year and with the
absence of basketball they are
expected to go up.
The talks between the
owners and players have taken
a good turn as of late and it
looks promising. The talks
are escalating and they have
now reached the major issue
of profit sharing. The owners
want a fifty percent split
between themselves and the
players because small market
teams are losing money and
are on the verge of collapse.
The players union is strong
however and will not budge
on this issue.
The future of the NBA is unclear and
it is unknown when the lockout will end.
Several weeks of games have been cancelled
and it appears that more will be cancelled
soon. Many players have signed long term
contracts in other countries and think that
the lockout will last through what would
be the NBA season. This lockout has no
end in sight and it could mean big trouble
for the future of the National Basketball
Association.

The “Great American Pass Time”
has coming to a close. The 162 game
season of baseball ended on September
28. With the five-month season ending,
came the month-long fight for a
coveted spot in the World Series. Just
like every season teams had their share
of struggles, and teams accomplished
amazing feats. The Tampa Bay Rays –
who were nine games back – made
the biggest comeback of the year,
beating their division rivals, the
Boston Red Sox, on the last game
of the season, snatching a spot
in the playoffs as the American
League Wildcard. Then there is the
Philadelphia Phillies. The
Phillies easily claimed
the regular season’s
overall number one
spot in Major League
Baseball, as well
as making history,
winning a franchise
record of 102 games. The
month of October was crucial for all
of these playoff teams. Fighting to get
to the last seven games of the month,
and to take to their hometown the
Commissioner’s Trophy and the title of
World Series Champions.
The American League Division
Series consisted of the Detroit Tigers
against New York Yankees, and the
Texas Rangers against the Tampa Bay
Rays. Though the Tigers struggled
throughout the ALDS series, in game
five they won three of five games
in what could be argued the closest
game of their series, advancing them to
the American League Championship
Division. The Rangers’ and the Rays’
series was the shortest of both the ALDS
and the NLDS, playing only four of the
five games. The Rangers won three of four
games even though they were outscored
21-16 runs.
The National League Division Series
was the Arizona Diamondbacks against
the Milwaukee Brewers, and St. Louis
Cardinals against the Philadelphia
Phillies. In the Diamondbacks and
Brewers series, the Brewers won
three of five games, advancing to the
NLCS. The St. Louis Cardinals
won three of five of their games,
eliminating the Phillies from
the World Series.
The elimination
of the Yankees and
the Phillies shook
up the run for the
World
Series,
making things
interesting for
baseball fans.
With the ALDS
and NLDS over, the American League
Championship Series (ALCS) and the
National League Championship Series
(NLCS) began. The Rangers earned their
way to the World Series for a second
consecutive year, winning four of six
games, outscoring their opponents 55-46
runs. The St. Louis Cardinals – National
League’s Wildcard team – have made
it to the World Series, winning four of
six games in their series against the
Milwaukee Brewers. They outscored their
opponents 58-41 runs. This makes the St.
Louis Cardinals the first NL Wildcard
team to make it to the World Series since
the Colorado Rockies in 2007. The need
for a seventh game in both series was not
necessary.
The Rangers and the Cardinals, more
than ever depended on their spectacular
pitching staffs. In the American League,
notable pitcher Alexi Ogando, of the
Texas Rangers, ended the post season
with a 2.77 era, earning three wins for the
Rangers. On the National League side, the
St. Louis Cardinals used all their pitchers,
even multiple times. Chris Carpenter,
being one of few who has
pitched multiple games
throughout
the
postseason, ended
his season with a
3.52 era.
Aside from
the
pitchers
are the players.
Key
player,
Nelson
Cruz,
had his share of
excitement. Cruz’s
walk-off
grand
slam that advanced
the Rangers to the ALCS
was the highlight reel of that
night. The Cardinals have had their share
of action too. Albert Pujols hit a career
high 18 homeruns in the postseason, being
only the eighth player to do so, tying and
surpassing Babe Ruth. Also tying with
Babe Ruth is Pujols’ achievement of
three homeruns in one postseason night,
in which the Cardinals beat the Rangers
16-7.
The World Series went for the whole
seven games this year, making it the
first since the 2002 World Series. The
Cardinals started off strong with a 3-2
win over the Rangers during game one
of the World Series. Texas came back
to win game two, and from then on it
was a back and forth war between the
two teams. By game five the Rangers
were leading the World Series three to
two when the Cardinals shook up the
competition once again.
By the seventh inning the Rangers
led 5-2 but the Cardinals tied the game
in the bottom of the ninth, extending
the nine inning game further. In the top
of the tenth inning the Rangers once
again took the lead 9-7. Just when
Cardinal fans were losing hope,
incredibly, the Cardinals
tied the game again at
9-9. Cardinal fans had
new hope and it paid
off. In the bottom of the
eleventh inning, David
Freese hit a walk off
homerun, tying the
series at three to three
and forcing a game 7.
The game 7 was a
buzz. The Rangers were
away from home, playing at
the St. Louis’ stadium. Cardinal
red and the roar of the crowd filled
the stadium. Game seven started
on a high note for Ranger fans, but
did not last for long as the Cardinals
tied the Rangers in the same inning.
Rangers fans' hopes were high until
the Cardinals eventually pulled ahead,
taking their eleventh World Series title
and the Commisioner's Trophy to their
hometown.
With baseball season over and
spring training only months away.
Baseball fans don't have to wait long
in order to see their favorite players
back on the field.

It only takes three men to make
up the band “Foster the

indie pop band formed
in Los Angeles in 2009.
The members are Mark

Mark

it as “Foster the People.” The
band is best known for the song

three on the Rock Songs and number
three on the Billboard Hot 100. The
song was featured on SyFy’s series
Warehouse 13 in episode 9 of season 2.
It obviously didn’t take long for their
fame to peak.
They began performing at charity

Shoes.” The band got into the Coachella
Music Festival in 2011. Their newest
and only album “Torches,” was released
on May 23, 2011. Foster says, “It is a
body of work and a joyous record.”
You may say their song “Pumped Up
Kicks” is what got them noticed. This
song has an interesting sound to it it’s
definitely not like the other music
you hear today. The sing has its own
essence; calm yet something
you could totally bust a move
to. Their voices and tune in
this certain song are calm
and mellow. Each person is
used for a different note and
sound, you can definitely
hear it all. The lyrics to this
song could be recalled as
graphic “All the other kids
with the pumped up kicks
you’d better run, better run,
outrun my gun.” Yet, if you
were to read the rest of the
lyrics, you would understand
that it wasn’t their intention.
Overall, I would give them a

there are better artists out there. All
of them put together make wonderful

Dear Hannah,
Dear Hannah,
My best friend started getting into
some bad things, and her grades are
beginning to slip. How can I try to help
her find her way back on the right path?
A: Avoid being pressuring, however
gently be the light in your friends life.
You do not want him/her to travel
further into the wrong direction. By
setting the example, as opposed to pushing
your opinion into their mind, they will
be more willing and eager to open up
to you eventually, and will most likely
look up to you. This is a great way
to help out your pal in the long run.
Dear Hannah,
I’m not naturally shy, but after
switching schools, I find it impossible to
talk to people without getting nervous.
I constantly worry what thoughts are
going through other people’s minds when
I’m around them. I wish people could see
how great I really am, what should I do to
regain my social life?
A: First off, do not tell your self you are
alone, because there are many kids who feel
the way you do even without transferring
schools. It is great that you believe you
are an interesting individual, and you
deserve to be proud. Begin by stepping
out of your comfort zone gradually.
Smile at people, say hello, and try to meet
somebody new each day. Next match you
and your new friends similar interests up,
and enjoy chatting about these things.
You will find in time that there are many
people to interact with just like you, and it
isn’t worth missing out on just because of
embarrassment without reason.
Dear Hannah,
All my friends tossed aside their values
when they reached high school, and I am
on the brink of making some bad decisions
myself. It sounds fun to do what they do,
but it’s against what I stand for. What
should I do?

Fall fashion trends to follow
Louis Bonn
Staff Writer
Summer is gone and autumn is in the
air!!! This year’s designers have added
many carry-over trends and crazy, new ones
to their collections, which we will be seeing
around often when we’re shopping. The
2011 Fall trends are diverse and numerous.
Check them out?!?! Below is a list of some
of the top trends hitting the runways this
season.
Color: Just because the weather’s cold
and gloomy outside doesn’t mean we have
to be! Over the past several years, designers
have always preferred neutral or plain hues,
such as black, brown, navy, and cream in
fall collections. Instead, the collections are
now using a lot of bright and neon colors
such as sky blue, neon orange, hot pink,
and crimson. These eye-catching colors are
used in many fun and daring combinations.
I love how there’s a twist this year of the
use of bright colors, because it makes for a
happier and more colorful atmosphere.
Androgyny: Now, this is a global trend that
the world just can’t resist. Girls are striving
to act and look like boys. There are many
masculine shirts, boots, and hats in this form.
Many of those shirts are in military form or
tuxedo-like. In my opinion, I think this trend
is very unique and interesting. I enjoy the
military hats the most.
The Elegant 1940s: Whenever I think of
1940s fashion, I think of a simple, yet very
classy and timeless look. Just as fashion
trends come and go, the 40’s have repeated
itself. The pencil-skirts, trench coats, fake
fur, and hats from that era have come back.
I am a really big fan of the trench coats and
hats of those times. I think it is great how the
designers went back to the 40’s instead of the
usual return to the 70’s, or 80’s.
Maxi-Skirts: Among teen girls, the
miniskirts are always popular. Since it’s
winter, it’s better to wear maxi-skirts, because
their long length warms you up. These are nice
because they fully embrace and accentuate
your figure. Maxi-skirts are easy to match
shirts with, because of their simplicity.
Chunky Knit Sweaters: Since it’s fall
and the weather’s getting colder, it’s not
surprising that the designers have included
the chunky knit sweater in their collections.
Chunky knit sweaters have always been in
winter fashions. They are always great to
wear as long as you know how to pair them
up correctly.
Prints: Prints, prints, prints!!!! This is
absolutely my favorite trend. The prints run
from polka-dots and broken glass to flowers
and feathers. There are also Baroque prints
and animal prints. Prints are always great to
wear and they’re a lot of fun to look at. The
variety is endless, so you can just about get
any print you wish for.
Pleats and Frills: Even though androgyny
is a hot trend, femininity is still hot among
many fashion designers. If you are more on
the girly side, this is the trend for you. The
lovely rosettes, pleats, frills, and embroidery
give you a more romantic and charming look.
Usually the fall fashion trends foretell
how the winter fashions are going to look.
Fall is close to winter, so usually there
would be a continuing trend of the same
clothes. The colors are often the main
difference, as we get into colder weather
and more holidays such as Christmas,
Thanksgiving, and New Years.

What's your Thanksgiving dinner style?
Thanksgiving is a holiday filled
with food traditions, myth, and a
whole lot of cooking. Myth you say?
Yep, myth. Truth is, cheddar cheese
has more tryptophan (an amino acid,
that supposedly make you sleepy)
than turkey. So much for Uncle Al
blaming his turkey over-consumption
for passing out at the table. The most
typical Thanksgiving dinner traditions
include turkey, mashed potatoes with
gravy, cranberries, and pumpkin pie-though many families have substituted
their own traditions for these classic
dishes. Take this quiz to find out what
your Thanksgiving dinner
style is. Add the number of
