Henri Matisse: Fauvism`s most Colorful Painter
auvism - An early twentieth century art movement and style of painting F in France. The name Fauves, French for "Wild Beasts," was given to artists adhering to this style because it was felt that they used intense colors in a violent, uncontrolled way. The leader of the Fauves was Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954). He was really more of an intellectual artist than an emotional artist, although you might not guess that from his work alone. His paintings really shocked viewers at first, not because of their subject matter but because they were created with deliberately unnatural colors in jarring combinations. “A8. Fauvism portraits with glue & chalk” as listed on the MOC-FV visual arts gallery on Artsonia > http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=66438 (A is for Art I, D=drawing; P=painting; followed by lesson #) This project is inspired by Henri Matisse’s Madame Matisse, "The Green Line" ( La Raie verte) and the French movement, Fauvism. Fauvism (1898-1906) is characterized by bold, often distorted forms and vivid colors. Students begin with a contour drawing with glue, which is a new technique for most students and a difficult medium to control; which fits this style of art. After it dries, pastels are blended, layered and mixed again to add a colorful mood to the portraits. This lesson gives students an opportunity to experiment with blending & mixing colors. [Next we will focus on blending to create the illusion of 3D form: “Graduated Tone”] Objectives: Contour drawing of a stylized portrait or character with glue Vivid blending of colors in a Fauvism style; using hard and soft lines.
