CPU welcomes SY 2015-2016
Central Philippine University welcomes another bright academic year with the school about to celebrate its 110th
Foundation Day. The tradition of excellence continues with old and new students coming back to CPU’s sprawling 24
hectare campus to enjoy an environment conducive to study and a friendly atmosphere with complete educational facilities.
CPU is one of the best schools in Western Visayas that maintains an autonomous status, an ISO Certification, and
accreditations by ACSCU-AAI, PAASCU and ATESEA. It provides Ladderized (TESDA) programs, and special courses like
Packaging and Software Engineering, Wellness and Lifestyle Management, and Digital Media and Interactive Arts. Several
specialized courses are also offered in the Graduate School. CPU consistently enjoys high passing rates in various
licensure examinations with two graduates recently topping their respective examinations.
The University has international extension programs in Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese Universities. It is involved in
International development through its linkages with the World Bank, the American Embassy, and other educational

CPU achieves highest enrollment in 2015-2016
The Registrar’s Office in its comparative enrolment report for the First Semester SY 20152016 tallied an increase of six per cent of students enrolled this year. The College of
Business and Accountancy posted the highest enrollment with 2,912 students, followed by
the College of Engineering with 1,804 enrollees. The High School Department achieved
the highest in Pre-Collegiate enrollment with 1,524 students. Total enrollees for SY 20152016 is 14,424 (5.92% increase from the previous year’s 13,618) . / CP

Nationalism
Nationalism demands awareness of the culture and history
of a nation. To be conscious with what other people think
about our country is to be a part of its development and
events.
June 12, 2015: Ilonggos observed the 117th Philippine
Independence Day. We were curiously involved with the
historical celebration in our city and in the Municipality of
Santa Barbara, Iloilo. There was an elaborate preparation
not only because President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III
was attending—but that the international diplomatic
community had all their representatives in line.
As far as I can recall, this was the first time a President of
the Republic raised one of the biggest Philippine Flags in
Santa Barbara, Iloilo. History tells us how our national flag
was first raised outside of Manila - in San. Barbara, Iloilo
during the twilight years of the Spanish government in the
Philippines. A proud Ilonggo General Martin Delgado was
behind the historic event. Delgado was considered to be
the greatest revolutionary leader in the Visayas.

What does it mean `WITH the people?’
W - Walk with them in tough and good times
Our commitment to serve the people is tested when difficult
times arrive. We also celebrate with them when good times
come.
I - Interact with each other on how to bring about a better
world.
Let us not stop talking about things that will make our lives
better. Let us stop bickering about petty things, and start
dealing with serious issues.
T - Teach each other lessons for no one has the monopoly of
wisdom.
Let us learn from one another. Our experiences are very rich
with lessons. All we need to do is to draw lessons from those
experiences.
H - Help one another to conquer evil.
Evil lurks in every corner. We need the support of each other
in confronting the many evils in our society.
The other important event on June 12 was the
inauguration of the newly renovated Old Capitol building at
Bonifacio Drive in Iloilo City. That was after the flag-raising
ceremony in Santa Barbara. Again, President Aquino with
the diplomatic corps was there to pull the curtain and for
the first time, lead `Vin de honneur’ outside of
Malacañang. Vin de honneur is a time –honored ceremony
exclusively held and attended by the President and
ambassadors of different countries during the
Independence Day celebration at Malacañang Palace.

CPU BLOOD OLYMPICS 2015
In line with the celebration of the Blood
Donor’s Month,Central Philippine University
in cooperation with Philippine Red Cross
Western Visayas Regional Blood Center
held a three-day blood letting event from
July 14 to 16, 2015. This year’s theme is
“Thank You for Saving My Life”.

Earthquake Drill 2015
A University-wide Earthquake Drill participated by all
departments and offices of Central Philippine University
in Iloilo City made real time effect in the afternoon of
July 16, 2015. Students, faculty and staff went out of
their classrooms and offices to execute the required drill
in preparation for the unexpected earthquakes that may

Coming Together

Time was when political debates was a trend, and joining a
CPUR-ready political party was ‘in-the-campus’. Enrolment
in B.S. Political Science at a period of Martial Law (circa
1981-84) was a thrill. You’re not giving up your studies and
political involvement despite intimidations and some kinds
of threat. Studying Political Science then requires
observations and analysis - of laws and governance;
theories and principles of society. What more do we need
then than the experience of a revolution in the making. The
theory of Revolution

was
a
benchmark of other
Western
and
c o nv e nt i o n al
principles. Many other
ideas also gave us
sleepless nights of
arguments
and
discussions.
Anyway
we
were
classmates,
team
mates
and
close
friends (dabarkads)
who made an all-time
special camaraderie
from our classrooms to
the campus. More than three decades now, many of those
we call political scientist have either gone offline from
mainstream political careers...or have made politics their
tool in the marketplace.
But one thing is sure and pleasant: We are coming back!
Let us come together to relive the past, get together to
cherish our friendship and alliance. We are the CPU
Political Science Alumni Association (PSAA).

(September 30-October 3, 2015)
The CPU Zeta Omicron Alumni was accepted as a chapter of the
CPUAAI in a resolution approved by its Alumni Board last June
16, 2015. The officers of the new chapter were duly informed of
this development thru Ms. Milan Payumo, their Relations Officer.
The mother organization of this new chapter is the Alpha Phi
Omega Frasority which was organized at CPU in 1973. APO was
founded in the USA in 1925 and was established in the
Philippines in 1950 with the purpose “to assemble college men
and women in the spirit of the SCOUT OATH and LAW, TO
DEVELOP LEADERSHIP, TO ESTABLISH FRIENDSHIP, and TO
PROMOTE SERVICE”.
The Charter members who organized Zeta Omicron were Jimmy
Patiño, Ernie Segovia, Leo Subong, Ricardo Mascuñana,
Honorato Ceballos, Devitt Dollosa, and Susan Ubas. Since then
Zeta Omicron has been involved in school activities especially
during enrolment and school-year opening where their members
volunteer to act as student guides, assisting new students and
transferees. They also maintain a “Freedom Board” in the middle
of the campus which gives out real-time information about school
schedules and activities.
In March 2015, Centralian alumni brothers and sisters of AΦΩ,
headed by Engr. Henry Tadena Jr., ECE. (2nd from right),
established the CPU ZETA OMICRON ALUMNI ASOCIATION to
perpetuate the tenets of Leadership, Friendship and Service
beyond college days and to continue serving CPU as alumni. The
other officers are: Mateo Villabert (VP Internal), Jovylee Subong
(VP External), Maria Carmen Falsis (Secretary), Christine Dableo
(Treasurer), Gershon Cañal II (Auditor), Milan Payumo (Relations
Officer), Julyne Suganob (Service Project Officer), Teresita
Jumayao (Recruitment Officer), Rommel John Custodio
(Disciplinary Officer), Jimmy Patiño (Adviser 1), Julie Roldan
(Adviser 2), and Narciso Pasuelo (Adviser 3).
Right after they have organized as a new alumni chapter, Zeta
Omicron embarked on its first service activity, involving itself in the
Brigada Eskwela 2015 at Jaro National High School, distributing
cleaning materials and snacks and repainting school chairs and
tables, a classroom and the main gate This was appreciated
gratefully by the school
administrators.
Members of Zeta Omicron are now
successful professionals in the fields
of maritime and military service,
medicine, engineering, business and
politics. They acknowledge that CPU
has played a great part in their Alpha Phi Omega-Zeta Omicron
success and so have decided to form
their own alumni chapter to be of service to their alma mater. The
CPU ZETA OMICRON ALUMNI ASSOCIATION will be formally
inducted as member of CPUAAI on October 3, 2015 during the
110th Anniversary celebration of CPU.

CPU - one of three Universities chosen to conduct video conference
on Poverty Reduction
Central Philippine University was one of three host universities for the
online course “Localizing Poverty Reduction Targets”. Silliman
University (SU) in Dumaguete, University of Southeastern Philippines
(USP) in Davao, and CPU in Iloilo City held four separate video
conference sessions for the course on June 9, 15, 22, and 25. The
video presentation from Iloilo was held at the CPU Henry Luce III
Library Knowledge for Development Center.
Representatives from LGUs in Iloilo, DSWD, Iloilo City Planning and
Development Office, DILG and other government offices shared ideas
with CPU participants in response to the presentations beamed by
video conference from the two other schools. CPU presentations were
also beamed for interaction to the other two universities. Resource
speakers from government agencies answered questions from
participants through the video conference.
The aim of the online course was to encourage participants to
contribute ideas to help local government programs on poverty
reduction. The four sessions highlighted on Poverty and Development
Orientation, Best Practices in Dumaguete City, Best Practices in Davao
City, and Best Practices in Iloilo City. Reflection papers were submitted
by participants through the internet after each session. Successful
participants became part of the group outlining recommendations on
how LGU’s can more effectively address the issue of poverty. The
admirable program of the three Universities was supported by the

Energizing the students ...with a helping of Pan de Sal & Milo
As early as 5:00 o’clock in the morning, Ms. Trinidad `Trenz’
Sorongon (a.k.a. Trining) would walk around the campus to see if
her janitorial student assistants are `up and
about’ getting the campus buildings and
grounds cleaned. For more than two years
now, this has been her advocacy towards
dedication and performance.
Having been a part of the Work Students
Program of the University, and supervising 128
Janitorial & Maintenance student assistants is
not easy. Checking and making sure that each student
accomplishes the 3.5 hours duty everyday with the quality
expected of their work, requires a lot of patience , according to
Sorongon.
SORONGON
Coming from low income families, most of these students bear
the hardships and hunger. They would go to work very early
without taking breakfast from their homes. Sorongon took
cognizance of their situation and saw it as an opportunity for
others to help.

The Janitorial Students Assistants group under Sorongon now
enjoy pan de sal and cups of hot chocolate drinks every morning
shortly after they have done their cleaning and garbage disposal.
Sorongon also encouraged them to segregate plastic waste, and
make projects out empty pet bottles. This initiative also
contributed to the students enjoyment with their work.
Through the support of the University President Dr. Teodoro C.
Robles, and the Work Students Alumni Association, Sorongon’s
desire to help the Janitorial Student Assistants was realized.

The Opening Ceremonies and Games of the 1st Iloilo City Developmental
Volleyball League (ICDVL) was held on June 27, 2015 at the CPU
Gymnasium, presented by EGGER FARM, owned by Mr. Alfie Lagman with
the full support of Central Philippine University (CPU), Iloilo National High
School (INHS), Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog, Vice Mayor Joe III Espinosa,
Chairman of Iloilo City Sports Council. Mr. Moi Salomon Jr. is the
Tournament Director. ICDVL has chosen the CPU Gym as the venue of the
League because of its spacious area. A total of 53 teams in the Elementary,
Secondary and Open Categories are joining the League. CPU is fielding
nine (9) teams including Alumni. Games will be played every Saturday at
the CPU University Gym and on Sundays at the Iloilo National High School
(INHS). The League will last until the month of August 2015.

Central Post publishes records and photos from the treasure chest of
Old Central beginning 1905 - in celebration of the University’s
110th Foundation Day this year.
The Jaro Industrial School Republic (said to be
one of the earliest student-body organizations in
the Philippines) was organized in 1906. Celso
Militante was the first Republic President and
served from 1906-1909.
The republic was patterned after the American
government and had three departments: the
Executive, the Legislative, and the Judicial.
