From the CPUHSAA President
Dear
fellow
CPUHS alumni
and friends,
In
behalf
of the CPUHS
Alumni Association and my co-officers, our heartfelt
gratefulness to you all for your great prayer-support and
generosity extended to the CPUHS Grand Centennial
Celebrations and Alumni Homecoming on August 30 and 31, 2013. We praise God for
at least 781 attended the first day of the centennial celebrations coming from around
the globe and within the Philippines near and far.
We will always be forever grateful to God and to you!
Simply, we are immensely blest by God of your great help to us in the BIG WORK
in progress that will be brought into fruition for God’s eternal glory and honour!
Further, it is very heart-warming to note that many CPUHS alumni/alumnae both
on their individual capacities and various alumni batches by and large have expressed
their commitment of support to the Ms. Nona Suarez Dominado Endowment Fund,
and the continuing completion of the CPUHS Multi-purpose Covered Gym for the
betterment of the CPUHS. In fact, some of them have given their donations already.
Thank you Atty. Peter Irving Corvera for a very moving inspirational message you
have conveyed to us during the Centennial Closing Celebration.
Meanwhile, we praise God for the initial donations lodged on the (Account
#8063) NONA SUAREZ DOMINADO ENDOWMENT FUND for CPUHS Financial

ILOILO PRISAA 2013 NEWS
By Dan P. Dorillo
In a football match during the recent Iloilo PRISAA meet
at the CPU Football field, the CPU High School Football Team
established a record of sorts by scoring 25 goals against its opponent,
the Assumption High School Team, which did not produce a single
goal. Coached by Mr. Mark Agriam, a faculty member of the CPU
Development High School, the locals soared to a commanding
10-0 lead at half-time with the heroics of star forwards Nathaniel
J. Taala, Exianirum G. Sierra, Jekar Franicis D. Sullano and Pablo
S. Francia. In the second half, Coach Mark decided to rest his first
stringers to give his second team an opportunity to hone their
skills. They did not fail their coach as they added another 15 goals
to the team’s total goal production.
For the record, the highest score in a football match ever was
149 - 0 in a controversial match in Madagascar, Africa, where the
losing team continuously kicked the ball into their own goal in
protest against poor officiating. In international tournaments here
are the five highest scores in recent history of the sport: Australia vs.
American Samoa, 31 – 0 (2001); Australia vs. Tonga, 22 – 0 (2001);
Iran vs. Guam, 19 – 0 (2000); Iran vs. Maldives, 17 – 0 (2000);
Tajikistan vs. Guam, 16 – 0 (2000). While the CPU-ASSUMPTION
PRISAA game may have established an unprecedented record in
Philippine football in terms of goals produced, the unique feature
of this particular match was when Coach Mark allowed 2nd goalie
Ryan A. Apalacio, replacing Chris Maverick C. Perecho, to attack
the opponent’s goal in the 2nd half, converting a frontal kick into a
goal. A goalie scoring in football! This may not have happened in
any football match anywhere ever!
The defending champion CPU team went on to beat St.
Vincent Ferrer Seminary in the Finals. With the final score of 3 – 1
after two extensions, the CPU boys thus remained champions in
this event to the delight of their numerous fans and the satisfaction
of the coaching staff and Sports Director Atty. Alejandro Somo.

INTRODUCTION
I have no doubt that, sitting here this morning in the company of those who share a common history, you are
flooded by memories. High School memories. What do you remember? My sojourn in the CPU High School dates
back to 1960-1964 and I vividly remember that we were a force to contend with especially in the University Day
Literary-Musical Contests. I personally remember receiving a beating at the CPUR polls from Narciso Maravilla
in the bid for governor of the CPU High School. Now, don’t lie to me! You must remember that schoolmate who
caused your heart to skip a beat. I particularly remember this one cute guy in my Senior Class who used to borrow
my Physics textbook. I’m sure he discovered the love notes obviously tucked between the pages of the book. When
he returned the book to me after his Physics class because he was in a different section, the notes would still be
there-witnesses to an unrequited love. I remember consoling myself by believing that what he read in those notes were also his message to
me. Consuelo de bobo! And many of you would, for sure, recall the white-haired La Senora Natividad de Mallari who impressed upon us that
“poco un poco seba lejos.” And who can ever forget Mr. Armando Robles who told us that life is like a “mirage in the desert of uncertainty.”
Can you still see in your mind’s eye the diminutive Mr. Elvas who was the alter ego of our super strict principal, Mr. Eleuterio Plagata?
Certainly, you, too have your own recollections. And we have come together this week-end to remember.

AND CPUHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
Jaro, Iloilo City, Philippines
Dear CPUHS Alumni and friends,
We praise and thank God that the CPUHS playing court has become a covered gym with a roof that can enable our athletes to practice and
play rain or shine. We can now also hold our flag ceremonies, convocations, and P.E. classes.
We are grateful for Batch 1981 who made the overall design/plans and constructed Phase 1 consisting of the foundation, columns, beams
and roofing. We are currently enjoying the basic structure. Thank God for grateful hearts and hands, who have shown that it is “payback time” for
the blessings they have received especially during their “teens” which is probably the most memorable times of their lives while studying at CPU
High School.
The structure is not yet complete- but it will be, by the grace of God. And GOD would surely use YOU and the rest of our ALUMNI. The
aspired completed gymnasium will truly be an opportunity for all BATCHES to be blessed as there is joy in giving and sharing for its completion.
Thus, here is a rundown of how YOU can participate by donating for the other parts to be constructed:

BSN 1980 Texas Roundup
DECEMBER 2013
by Mary Bernadette Castigador Spicak
“Remember, the greatest gift is neither
found in a store nor under a tree, but in
the hearts of true friends.” - A quote from
Cindy Lew
Some of our profound memories start
out with the simplest of ideas - “Let’s get
together!” Once again, the 1980 BSN 5
Year Class of CPU got together in an epic
“Texas Roundup”. The reunion was held in
Port Aransas, Texas from November 16-18
of this year. This event was hosted by the
Texans and was celebrated in a “big way” as everything in Texas is BIG!
There were 43 former classmates that
gathered together in the quaint fishing
town of Port Aransas. The “Round Up”
was a success - we have even rounded up
seven of our classmates’ husbands! The
friendship and camaraderie was spectacular
- something that this Class is well known
for.
Even though the reunion was is Port
Aransas, the gathering started in Houston
where most of the out-of-state folks

from the High School Department given
to victims in Pili, Ajuy; 187 packs from
the College of Nursing given to Coastal
Barangays thru Estancia Baptist Church
in coordination with Ptr. Gaudencio Boko,

Council (LMC) Team given to victims in
Poblacion Zone 1, Estancia, Iloilo. It is
worthwhile to note that the budget of the
300 packs from the LMC Team was taken
from the Faculty and Staff Christmas Party.
The Faculty and Staff opted to forego their
2013 Christmas Party and help Yolanda
victims instead.
The 687 grateful families who were
hardly hit by the typhoon and whose houses
were totally devastated were given packs of
goods consisting of: 2 kilos of rice, 1 kaldero,
1 blanket, 1 pack skyflakes, and 3 canned

Those who joined the Relief Operation

of the famous sights and scenes of Houston
including Johnson Space Center and the
famous M.D. Anderson Medical Center.
The 2-day gathering at Port Aransas
was a “whole lot of fun” and everyone had
a good time reminiscing our college days
in CPU. From Port Aransas, the group
proceeded to San Antonio and enjoyed
the Alamo and the River Walk. We came
together and truly enjoyed ourselves.
The “reunion fever” has taken over another one is being planned for next year.
We are hoping, with God’s blessings,
that we can continue to gather and
strengthen our friendships! Just as we are
blessed with the good friendships and
circumstance, we, as a group, decided to
share our blessings by agreeing to donate
to the Scholarship Fund sponsored by CPU.
This Scholarship Fund is for the deserving
students of some of the surrounding towns

This is just a beginning of a new chapter for a continuing and unswerving

continual improvement of our Alma Mater with God’s bounteous blessings which are
meant to be shared for the greater good of one and all and for the expansion of God’s

Moreover, many other blessings we have received: the fun we had together during the

achievements to get started, and the like, but above all these, one simple fact that still
remains is: “God has been our glory” as He enables all of us (whole CPUHS alumnae/
alumni together with the current HS Acting Principal Assistant Prof. Janet Jalbuena,
students, faculty and staff ) with the great support of CPU family in general through the
able leadership of CPU president Dr. Teodoro Robles, the CPUAAI family through Atty.
Von Lovel Bedona and Atty. Alejandro Somo, and the CPUFOAAI through Ms. May Vail
Lee to steer CPUHS to soar higher and to keep on soaring heights.”
Also, we are humbled by God as we get through the challenges as we journey
together and learned from them to depend on God greatly. God has been so faithful to
sustain us all through it all.
To God be the glory forever and ever indeed! Again, thank you very much to one
and all!
Cheers!

DECEMBER 2013
somehow created havoc in the reception
game of the Lady Troopers. This paved the
way for Tubino’s infiltration of the opposing
defenses and Cebuana attacker Danika
Gendrauli spotting holes in the long court.
Cignal tore apart Army, 25-14.
But the veterans in the Lady Troopers
side began adjusting and when setter Tina
Salak began going almost exclusively to
utility-spiker Gonzaga, the floodgates
opened and the HD Spikers became hapless
victims of a raging juggernaut starring
Gonzaga, Balse and center Jacqueline Alarca
as TMS-Philippine Army ravaged the Cignal
defenses and with it claim the title. With
the victory, the Lady Troopers successfully
navigated their way to six straight wins after
an opening day loss to eventual fourthplacers Cagayan Valley.
Confetti blasts showered the new
volleyball queens and it also brought the
inaugural staging of the first women’s
volleyball club league to a pulsating climax.
TMS-Philippine Army was led by
Balse’s game-high sixteen points, but it was
Gonzaga’s fourth set display of accuracy and
firepower that allowed her to cop most of her
twelve markers and also won the 21-year-old
Ilongga Player of the Game honors.
Gonzaga is a Centralian and has been
NESTEA BEACH VOLLEYBALL National
Champion for 3 Years: (2011, 2012, 2013)
with fellow Centralian team mate Fiola Mae
Ceballos. Congratulations!

programs of CPU “with appreciation and
to approve the elevation of the status of the
program to Level IV effective December 2012
to April 2017 (coterminous with the number
of years granted during the last survey visit.)”:
Liberal Arts, B.S. Biology, B.S. Chemistry,
Education (BSed), Education, (BEEd),
Business Administration and Accountancy.
Before conveying his thanks and best
regards, Pedreno advised the programs/
departments to document all substantial
changes in the program during the duration
of its level IV status using the criteria for level
IV in preparation for the next survey visit.
The eighth program elevated to the Level
IV status is the Master of Arts in Nursing
(MAN) effective until 2016.

Aside from being an accomplished ceramicist and painter, she
has found a new passion in bookwriting. An author of two books
on clay, she has written a book on her Christian faith as well. Peace
and Joy, published by WestBow Press, USA is an “account of how
she found deeper joys in God’s Word, rather than the pleasures of
her own works”. In this latest book, Querubin-Tompkins shares
that she has found what matters most in life.

actively involved in engaging barangays for enriching the teaching
– learning process.
Organized by the United Board for Christian Higher
Education in Asia, the conference served as a “a platform to connect
knowledge from different academic disciplines and different social
sectors, to learn from each others’ best practices and to apply
knowledge in different settings to achieve a better world.” For
more information on the conference, visit this link: http://www.
ln.edu.hk/osl/conference2013/intropage.html
A proposal of Dr. Rio for a project on the Development of
Teaching Module on Indigenous People as a Local Peace-building
Project has also been approved for United Board funding. This
service learning project will integrate with the Asian University
Digital Resource Network of which CPU is a member.
Galaez... 2
“Chemical Engineering is not an easy course. But if you are
interested in it, pursue it. If you find it difficult, do not lose hope
and you will overcome. Study, study. Learn to get help from other
students through group studies. Get answers to questions. I,
myself, have asked for help from my teachers when needed. Talk to
your professors if there are topics that are difficult for you.”
Galaez reveals that Chemical Engineering is a course he really
likes because it has chemistry and mathematics which are his
favorite subjects. He likes it further as it emphasizes applications.
He is glad that CPU is very conducive to learning and is strong on
the fundamentals of engineering which then become building blocks
for higher levels of studies. He believes that the new curriculum will
enhance even more the Chemical Engineering program.
“First of all, I would like to thank the Lord, then my parents”,
Galaez reflects with gratefulness. “My professors, my teachers in the
College of Engineering , my classmates, everyone who supported
me - they all deserve my thanks”.
Dr. Dahlia H. Pescos, Chairman of the Chemical Engineering
Department, reports that Galaez truly deserves the blessing of
a board topnotcher. She admires Galaez for his being humble,
respectful and teachable even if intelligent. (The Chemical
Engineering program, which is under her department, is recognized
as a Center for Development and has several laboratories including
those for water and soils.)
Engr. Dany C. Molina, Dean of the College Engineering, is no
less proud of the exemplary performance of Galaez. From Baylor
University, USA where he is currently a United Board for Christian
Higher Education in Asia fellow, Dean Molina writes, “I believe
that any student in the College of Engineering has the potential
to be like Kim. All the students have to do is simply to focus their
energies on their studies, subject themselves to discipline, connect
with the right persons (peers especially) and seek God’s guidance
and blessings as they pursue their dreams of becoming exemplary
engineers.”
In January 2013, Galaez started working in the Bataan Oil
Refinery of Petron Corporation as a process engineer. He believes
that a refinery provides a good opportunity for applying his
learnings in Chemical Engineering and contributing to nationbuilding. His on-the-job training – which was during his final year
in college – with JGC Philippines, Inc. in Alabang, Muntinlupa
City prepared him for living away from home.

TRANSITION
I. - More than remembering, I want to say that we have come “home”
to re-member. Re-(sic.) dash-member. To re-connect, to bond again,
to re-discover how it feels to be a part of this chain of sisterhood and
brotherhood that circumscribes the globe. And, for one, an integral
part of remembering and re-membering is to be reminded once
again what it means to be a Centralian. To lift up one more time, lest
we have forgotten, what is at the very core of our being graduates of
the Central Philippine University High School. And what is at the

very core of our being?
I left CPU in 1985. It wasn’t until 2008 when I found myself
wending my way back to Iloilo City. I had been asked to spend my
pre-retirement years at CPU as a teacher. The first day I was home,
I decided to meander through the walkways of CPU just to find out
if I could feel welcomed and at home. I wanted to find out if the
Central Spirit which I had caught at the CPUHS was still arresting
as it was 40 years ago. Sadly enough, I felt like a stranger. Something
was missing. It seemed like the new structures, impressive though
these were, had eased out that “something” which had permeated
the campus when I was a student here. And immediately, I realized
what that sorely missed essence was. It was the Central Spirit; The
force that motivated those working here to perceive their jobs as
opportunities of SERVICE... as ministries of love, first and foremost;

The atmosphere that engendered a sense of importance because
administrators could take the time to stop and exchange pleasantries
with a mop-pushing janitor; The ambience that created the attitude
of redemptive acceptance rather than punitive sanctions; A mindset
that saw the good in people first so that students could believe in

them dignity and worth. I do not wish to give the impression that
the Central Spirit is totally absent today. My sense is, that is precisely

ourselves to the arduous task of re-kindling

is not to merely meet the challenges of life;
instead, we are to challenge life situations
based on the imperatives of our Christian
faith. Let the Central Spirit impress upon us
even more deeply that a Centralian is (and
should be) passionately engaged in the noble
task of reversing corrupt and repressive
systems instead of getting sucked into the
oppressive bureaucracy, seriously working
for the new ordering of things in the name
of the One who says: “Behold, I make things
new.” Only in that spirit will the CPU High
School soar to greater heights.
II. - The scripture text that was read a while
ago talks about those whose strength is
renewed, those who mount up on wings as
eagles, those who run and not get weary, and
those who walk and not faint. I had said this
at our 45th Class 1964 reunion in 2009 but I
wish to share it with you today. The sequence
of the action words (the verbs) in Isaiah 40:31
is interesting. First, mounting up with wings;
second, running; third, walking. It seems all
inverted to me. Shouldn’t it be the other way
around? An airplane first taxis on the runway
(walking, if you will). Then it picks up speedruns. Then it takes to the skies- soars. That
would be the proper sequence, wouldn’t it?
On deeper reflection, I realized that Isaiah
must have deliberately arranged the verbs
that way: soaring-running-walking. His was
an arrangement based on the challenge that
the movement suggests. It is a lot easier to be
high flying...to have the klieg lights focused
on you... to be a “hot item”. In fact, some of
our CPUHS alumni/alumnae are just that:
high flying... hot items... pursued by the
cameras. And before the blinding lights,
you can broadcast to the whole world how
you have imbibed the Christian values that
CPU taught you. But I tell you, my friends;
it is more difficult to walk. In the ordinary
humdrum of our lives, in the privacy of our
homes, in the routinary tasks at our work
places-there is where our character is really
put to the test; there is where the Godinspired Central Spirit is made to function
and to influence. I have forgotten most of
Mrs. Nequin’s geometry, Mrs. Trino’s algebra,
Mr. Alon’s physics, Mrs. Parcon’s Pilipino,
Mr. Jallorina’s economics, Mrs. Regalado’s
biology but 49 years after graduation, I can
confidently say that I am still guided by what
CPUHS taught me: a lesson that has kept
me in good stead all these years. And the
lesson is this: Christian character is what a
person is in the dark; it is what you are when
everybody goes home.
Oh yes, we are challenged to soar to
greatness. But what does it mean to be great?
As one of our school songs says: “When
we leave thy halls, dear Central, to waiting
tasks we go with school day joys our hearts
enthral, how much pain will our hearts
know? But we’ll faithful be in life’s noon
or shade; pledge our troth each day anew.
‘gainst the time when memories shall fade,
here’s a song that will keep us true.”
My friends let us rise from this Grand
Centennial Celebration, faithful and true
to the Master Teacher at whose feet we all
studied.
CELEBRATION
(Rite of Dedication: an excerpt of the
Thanksgiving Service program prepared by
Ms. Sharon Rose Joy Ruiz-Duremdes)
ACTION I: Students enter from the
wings and place themselves on the risers.
VOICE: One hundred years ago, the
High School Department was born and
through the years, its doors swung open
to usher young women and men into the
world-there to test their mettle. As the
rolled piece of paper tied with gold and blue
ribbons was handed to a graduate, each one
thought about conquering the vast expanse,
riding the crest of the wave, climbing every
mountain, fording every stream, dreaming
the impossible, reaching the unreachable
star. Not too long after we submerged
ourselves in the crucible of life, we discovered
that the world was not like the High School
corridors or class rooms. Many of us found
ourselves in the grip of formidable struggles;
others drifted lazily with the current; still
others soared high. But whether mounting

Did you know....that CPU produced Four (4) “Mr. Football of
the Philippines” in the span of 3 decades?
The Sports Writers Association of the Philippines in Manila
bestowed this award to the following Centralians:
1. Mr. Orlando Plagata* – 1961
2. Mr. Jere Vaflor – 1963
3. Mr. Baltazar Dimasuay* – 1964
4. Mr. Ramsey Padernilla – 1982
The first three were members of the Ysmael Steel Manufacturing
Company Football Team while the last was a member of the San
Miguel Corporation Football Team.

or drifting along or struggling, we discovered that the path wasn’t
neatly carved out for us. There were briars and thistles along the way.
And oh! How they hurt. And paddling thru the on-rushing tide was
a herculean task.
ACTION II: Teacher brings in a science textbook. Give the
textbook to the student standing on the floor who, in turn, passes
it on to the next student until it reaches the 10th student. The 10th
student hands the book over to an “attendant” who places the book
on a book stand.
VOICE: But we did not succumb to weak resignation for the
CPUHS gifted us with two things. She gave us the penchant to strain
after knowledge anchored in the sciences. Through an understanding
of scientific method of inquiry, we pried open the secrets of the
natural world and discovered the way to navigate through the
precarious rivers of life. The Central Philippine University High
School gave us the gift of Scientia.
ACTION III: Teacher brings in a Bible. (same procedure done
with science textbook)
VOICE: The deeper we plumbed the depths of life, the more we
realized that there was an added value to the education we received
from the CPUHS. It was a gift that would give us moral handles with
which to cope with the unfriendliness of the world, to steady our
moorings as we sailed thru the treacherous seas of existence, to give
us a purpose for being so we might answer the question: What am
I living for? The Central Philippine University High School gave us
the gift of Fides.
ACTION IV: Principal brings a torch. (same procedure) The
torch is held up by the student on the highest rung of the risers. He
moves center stage still on the riser as other students disperse to the
hall.
VOICE: Today, a century hence, the Central Philippine
University High School still proudly stands even more deeply
committed to the task of imbuing young girls and boys with the
Central Spirit...that propelling energy which differentiates them
from the rest of the pack...that animating force which challenges
them to plant their feet on higher ground... that compelling strength
which makes them mount up with wings like eagles. Grateful to God
for the gifts of Scientia et Fides, let us kindle the hope in our hearts
and, at 100, soar higher for a Greater CPUHS. Please rise if you are
able and let us sing with conviction “Hope of Coming Generations”.

CPUAA-UAE Chapter donated US$ 1000
for the scholarship fund.
Again, the Central Spirit reigns in UAE!
It was a night to remember where laughter,
cheers, smiles and inspired messages filled the
hearts of Centralians. Dean Rio said in his
message that there are some traits learned at
Central which he feels are now embedded in
the hearts of Centralians. These are Faith in
God, sportsmanship, sense of humor, rising
above adversity and poverty, compassion for
those in need, respect, friendship and love. He
also talked about some learning experiences
and fun memories in CPU.
The airline ticket of Dean Rio and the
visa of the couple were made possible thru
the courtesy of Engr. Farrukh Majeed, Vice
President - External and Engr. Mildred
Maravilla-Majeed, founding President and
Adviser. The Majeeds also hosted the guests
in their villa. Dean and Mrs. Rio’s stay in
UAE was made more memorable by having
a Big Bus tour around the City of Dubai and
visiting tourist attractions such as the Dubai
Miracle Garden, Dhow Cruise, At the Top of
Burj Khalifa, Dubai Museum, etc. A farewell
dinner for the guests with some of the
CPUAA-UAE Chapter members and officers
was held at Danial Restaurant, March 5, 2013.
