Cheniere Caminada Remembered…
South Lafourche Branch to Hold Open House on Sept. 4
The South Lafourche Public
Library will host an Open House
to celebrate the completion of
permanent displays intended to
preserve the history of Cheniere
Caminada.
The Cheniere Caminada Centennial, the South Lafourche
Public Library, and the library’s
Friends of the Library organization have come together to create
permanent displays to preserve
the history of the small fishing
village that was all but destroyed
by the hurricane of 1893.
The Open House is at 1:30
p.m. on Sat., Sept. 4.
“These permanent displays
will help us to restore some of
what has been lost from past
hurricanes and, at the same time,
enhance our past,” said Paul
Chiquet, branch administrator of
the Lafourche Parish Public Library.
“We also hope that because of
these displays, and others to
come, our library will serve as a
Open House
South Lafourche Branch
Sat., Sept. 4, 1:30 p.m.
Featuring Guest Lecturers
Windell Curole & John Doucet
&
Live Cajun Music
gathering place for any future
historical or genealogical event.”
During the Open House, visitors can view the displays, which
consist of artwork depicting the
communities; photographs of the
places and people who resided
there; and artifacts reflecting
Cajun life from the past.
Local historians Windell
Curole and Dr. John Doucet will
also be on hand to place the displays in their historical context.
Curole will discuss the 1893
hurricane, “The Deadliest Hurricane in Louisiana History,” and
its effects on the development of
the south Lafourche area.
The author of 14 plays centering on Louisiana history and
culture, Doucet will discuss his
play, Tant que Durera la Terre.
About the Great Cheniere Hurricane of 1893, the play was
awarded the 1996 Louisiana Native Voices and Visions Playwriting Award.
The Open House will also
feature live Cajun music and
refreshments.
This event is free and open to
the public.
Those with an interest in local
history are encouraged to stop
by.
