QC 945.2 D3 H8 1958 c.2 . USCOMM-WB-DC PRELIMZNARY REPORT OH HURRICANE DAISY AWGUST 24-29, 1958 Hurricane "Daisy", intense but s m a l l in area, w a s detected as a t r o p i c a l storm about 300 miles esst-northeast of Miami, Florida on Sunday, A u g u s t 24, 1958. A r e p o r t from the ship "Alamr" indicating low pressure and strong winds provided t h e f i r s t clue t o t h e developing storm. A Navy reconnaissance flight i n t o the area subsequently confirmed i t s existence. The t r o p i c a l storm developed i n t o a hurricane on August 25. F'rom A u g u s t 24 t o A u g u s t 27 it d r i f t e d very slowly northward. Then i t s forward speed up the coast increased. It skirted t h e Atlantic seaboard and f i n a l l y moved out i n t o the Atlantic off Nova Scotia on A u g u s t 29. Hurricane "Daisy" reached i t s maximum i n t e n s i t y late Wednesday, A u g u s t 27 and e a r l y Thursday, August 28 while moving northward off the Georgia and Carolina coasts. The strongest winds near the center were then about125 miles per hour and the c e n t r a l pressure about 935 mb. o r 27.61 inches. Although the center of Hurricane Daisy passed within about 75 miles of Cape Hatteras and Nantucket, t h e area of hurricane winds was so concentrated that n e i t h e r the North Carolina nor New England coasts f e l t t h e f u l l e f f e c t s of t h e storm. The Hatteras s t a t i o n reported as i t s highest wind NNW 27 mph. with gusts t o 36. Block Island, R; I. reported a "fastest miles" of 40 mph. with a gust t o 45. A "Texas tower" located 120 miles east of Cape Cod reported gusty winds of 87 mph. and steady winds of 69 mph. as the hurricane center passed nearby. Available post-storm reports show no appreciable damage o r loss from t h i s severe hurricane. Over much of i t s course along t h e coast, "Daisy" was in range of shore-based radar. From the time it approached Hatteras until it passed Nantucket, the center was under abmst Constant radar observation. Reconnaissance coverage by A i r Force, Navy, and National Hurricane Research Project a i r c r a f t w a s also excellent, and the slow movement of the storm near t h e Florida coast during the first several days of i t s existence offered an unusually good opportunity f o r investigation by aircraft of t h e National Hurricane Research Project based a t West Palm Beach.
